    Thank you Greg for sharing! It is always so impressive to see people who, despite all their daily hassles, manage to find motivation and want to share their knowledge and experiences (take for granted that it's not just about money).

    I came because I'm in the market for an audio mixer and I didn't know jack about the subject. I have a couple of small synths, Korg volcano percussion, Behringer CRAVE, and M-Audio Oxygen keyboard. It was suggested that I look into getting an audio interface. Mackie was suggested to me so I jumped on to hear your evaluation. Super helpful, Greg.

    Brilliant video Greg.
    I bought one of these and was communicating with a chap called Cramer at Mackie because I couldn't make head nor tail of it.
    Floundering around I stumbled on your clear and concise explanation. I wrote to Cramer that Mackie should sponsor you to make them an instructional video because their manual is dire. Almost every section of their manual says 'does not apply to the ProFX6v3', or words to that effect. Also the section on input says to NOT enable the device as the default, which caused me no end of trouble as you HAVE to enable the device as default to get any signals back and forth.
    Anyway, thank you so much for preserving my sanity, especially the perverse 'USB 1/2 for headphones but USB 3/4 for speakers, controlled by knob 5/6'. You couldn't make it up.
    Love the parrot, who 'is' a pretty boy, lol.

      Thanks Neville, truly inspiring comment. It’s why I do it. I would love to make such a connection with Mackie. Indeed the Manual is poor. If you flip me this Cramer fella’s email I will follow up with them. would like to build that relationship.
      Best of luck and I’m hear if you have a question.
      Thanks.

      @@GregintheBox: Thanks for the reply, we don't always know if comments get read.
      Cramer's email is simply 'support@mackie.com' and Cramer is down as a level 2 technical support. Quote me and he should have a record of our emails.
      Looking at your climb in viewers it seems obvious to me that Mackie have missed something here and there are a lot of confused peeps searching for answers to how to make this thing fly.
      I have now got this working great, so, persevere folks Greg shows the way. And if we all contact Mackie they may help Greg do something about the poor instructions.
      I've found that Traktion Waveform works best for me with this mixer, others may find different.
      Best regards, Nev.

    Great video with some clear explanations on how the audio mixer works. Is there a particular way to set up the 3/4 USB option for receiving audio from your computer into the mixer to hear through headphones without causing others to hear themselves on social media applications? I am currently experiencing the issue of my friends being able to hear themselves speak due to the mixer outputting their microphones to them!

  • @Eugene737
    @Eugene737 4 года назад +8

    Hi GregintheBox, I just bought this mixer for my wife who is wanting to potentially use it for a podcast, but the very first thing she wants to use it for is to lead meditations. That is, she wants to speak into a mic but also 1) mix in (and hear) background music and 2) hear the participants on the call. I think I found out how to do this: using 1/8 jack (from phone or other audio producing device) to RCA (line 3 and 4) but I was trying to make use of both USB stereo outputs to achieve this goal. So I am confused by your recommendation of selecting USB 3/4 as the output for the Zoom call (i.e. the participants) because USB 3/4 appears to be routed to the mix (along with the other inputs) but I am unable to monitor on the headphone output. Pointing my computer/Zoom to USB 1-2 allows me to hear the participants and the rest of the inputs.
    In Summary: @ 19:10, you mention you can adjust the volume of your audience in zoom/headphones but it seems like USB 3-4 isn't routed to the headphone output. It is routed to the mix (i.e. back into the zoom call). I can play a youtube video and if I select USB 1-2, I hear it in my monitoring headphones but participants don't. If I select USB 3-4, participants hear the video, but I do not hear it.
    Any help would be appreciated and thanks for this detailed video.

But If I want to use the same computer as a source of instrumental music, then I will mix it with my voice singing and finally, I will send the mix back to the computer for recording purposes or for live streaming. @@pinaklonkar I am rewriting - I did have a hard time recording the first time. Now that I think about it. I had to get the settings right. I have a 2019 MacBook Pro running macOS Catalina 10.15.6 with two thunderbolt ports. . I use either the USB-C Digital AV Multiport adapter ($69.00 from the Apple Store.) This has my external HDMI monitor and the power cable and the USB-A connection from the Mackie plugged in.) You can also use the $19.00 USB to USB-C adapter as well. Then I plug my headphones into the headphone jack on the Mackie. I also have my Bose amplified computer speakers plugged into the headphone jack on the Mac. When I am connected to zoom or teams - I can use that 3/4 button that is near the bottom center - inside the 5/6 area labeled switch (I know -weird). to hear the voices coming back from Zoom or Teams. (This is what I was missing until I watched some videos on RUclips) Because I didn't know how to hear the voices that came back from the computer mixed with mine.
      You can click on Sound preferences under the speaker symbol on the top bar - and choose both input and output on that screen. (you can also go to system preferences -> sound -> and toggle between sound effects/output/input. Then choose Output and select the mackie. The choose Input and select the mackie. ) Make sure you are getting both the input and output settings for the Mackie and plug your headphones or speakers into the Mackie (not the headphone jack of the computer). Since its recognizing it - Maybe its giving you one as you say and leaving the other set to something else. I could take some screenshots but I don't know how to post them to this forum. if this does' t make sense/work - write back here and we will figure it out.

    I am a happy owner of this mixer, the Mackie ProFX6v3; I love to sing karaoke and used to record songs connecting this mixer to my laptop. However, it only sends out 2 USB channels. So I now do my recording with an EVO 8 which allows 4 USB channels. I use Cakewalk to record. But that said, unless I'm doing any recording, I continue to enjoy using the Mackie; I love the sound quality of its Mic preamps. The reverb though needs quite some experimentation to get right. Lastly, this Mackie now has fierce competition from a new Yamaha Mixer/Interface, the AG06 Mk 2, just released. It also has 2 USB channels and not 4.

      I've had a Mckie Micro Series 1202 for my home studio for years and recently upgraded to the ProFx12V3 - what a new world, love it - and which is why I watched this video, to learn a little more about the new Fx and now to get it all synched up with PC. You helped push me to dig into the Fx and cool Aux/USB feature - way cleaner than my old setup of routing PC audio back out through my audio interface, then out of interface through line out to the mixer 😳😳😳😳 - there's alot less buzz and snap,crackle and pop now.
      Anyway, I had also recently bought a used FroFx16 (not v3) for my band gigs... and really liked it but afterr watching this video and getting more into the V3 festures, I went yesterday and sold the non V3 model and found a used (excellent condition) FroFX16V3.
      So now I'm the proid owner of ProFX12V3 for home studio and ProFX16V3 for the road.
      I'm looking forward to gigging with the ProFX16V3 and using some of the effects -- and the onboard compression is a plus!!!
      One thing I haven't done is connect the V3 to my Reaper DAW - I imagine the entire mix is all coming in as 1 or 2 channels - not all separate channels. Meaning - although it's an audio interface, it's not going to be a replacement for my 4 channel Scarlett for recording 2 guitars and vox on separate tracks simultaneously.
      Anyway - appreciate you time and again great video - clear, concise and accurate! New to the channel, subscribed and looking forward to more - as you know, gear is never a destination, it's a never ending journey!

    You were using USB output 3-4 on the PC in order to use the volume control, but I had been assuming that the USB output 3-4 acts as a loopback, so that you can record your PC output, which is not what you'd want on a Zoom call, right? Am I misunderstanding how it works? I had actually been thinking this would be great so I could have my voice call go to USB output 1-2 so it doesn't loop back, but then I could have a backing track play on USB output 3-4 and loop back to my voice call so I could sing over a backing track and have the call hear it without hearing their own voices as an echo. Is that not how it works?

      It is an awesome and affordable tool for online adventures and recording. Internal mixers usually only allow for one fx bus and that one effect can receive a send from the different tracks. So sadly you can’t have spectate fx for different tracks. One choice for the whole mix. I would recommend using separate fx unit or pedals for the guitar before it connects to the mixer. Then you can choose a vocal effect and keep the mixer fx off on the guitar. Using pedals etc for guitar effects.
      Best of luck it’s a fun little unit.

    Your video is awesome! Just what I need, but I have a few more questions. I am on a Facebook Live show hosted by someone else. There are eight other performers. We all join through a Zoom link. You have shown me how to set up the mixer with a guitar. However, I use a digital keyboard pushed up in front of my desktop. Where do I plug that in? I see how to connect a separate mic and not use the one built into my Logitech webcam. However, sometimes I use backing tracks instead of keyboard. Our Facebook Live host has us click on Screen sharing so that our backing tracks come through. You do not mention this step. Please explain. Also do I need to have my backing tracks on my Iphone instead of having them on my desktop? Thank you for explaining everything so clearly!!!!!

    • @GregintheBox
      @GregintheBox  Год назад

      I would say that it’s very risky to try and play back tracks on the same pc as is running Zoom. The only realistic way is to use an app that does internal patching routing like VB-audio Banana. This is not for the techno faint of heart. So it’s much easier to use a separate device, phone, second laptop etc, and feed it into the mixer and from there into the Zoom pC.

    Greg thanks.
    I got a Zoom H6 audio interface. And I have Logic Pro X as audio software.
    Would it be possible to control those audio channels digitally? So throught the Logic Pro X software? That is on a mac.
    But probably you have DAWs like Logic Pro X for Windows also.
    Adding those reverbs via the DAW should be possible, I think.
    Also I got a midi controller which is connected to the DAW.
    Could you do an episode where you connect a DAW and stream via Zoom or Facebook? And using a midi controller keyboard?
    Thanks.
    You already upped my game!!!❤❤❤❤❤

    Greg - very useful video! I have one question for you. You've got USB 3-4 coming through (on mixer channels 5-6) so that you can hear the other participants in your Zoom call, but that source will also be mixed into what's being sent to the computer as well, right? (Because, as far as I can tell, the main mix that you're hearing in your headphones is also the very same mix that is being sent via USB to the "Line (proFX)" input on your computer.
    Is that the reason that in your Zoom audio settings you left the echo cancellation enabled?
    But what if I don't want the other Zoom participants to hear the various other alert sounds from my computer? There's no way to make sure that I can hear them in my headphones while preventing them from being sent out on my stream, is there? (Short of adding a second mixer just for the headphone mix...)

    I don't normally subscribe after viewing a tutorial, but.. You sir have a new follower :) I love how you break things down for tech dummies like me. So hard to find out how to do this online. Would it pick up Virtual DJ, running on my laptop, or would I need to go via line in?

    • @GregintheBox

      Thank you my friend. Kind words. As a DJ using a computer based virtual software you have the challenge of needing a PC to do the DJ work and a seperate PC to be your live streaming computer. To try and do both on the same PC is difficult and will likely not work. With 2 computers, 1 will work as your DJ platform, and connect into the the mixer Line in. The mixer is then USB connected to the second computer which connects to the Video conferencing platform or live streaming platform of your choice. Good luck and thanks for the support.

    Absolutely outstanding Video! Great, clear, explanations! Thanks so much for putting this together!
    I'm hoping you can answer a question - I'm wondering if this could be used to support "Hybrid Meetings" via Zoom or other Web conferencing solutions. I am hoping to:
    1) take the XLR output from a Wireless Conferencing mic system and feed it thru the mixer to a Laptop connected to the Zoom meeting so remote participants can hear folks in the room, and
    2) feed the audio coming from the remote participants on the Zoom meeting from the laptop over USB to this mixer and then out to a pair of powered speakers (rather than headphones) so that the room participants can hear the remote participants.
    Can I do that with this mixer? Thanks for your response!

      Well the short answer is Yes. We use USB mixers like this all the time at my work to attach all major of mics. Today we will be using a Behringer x32 compact connected to a computer for a Teams call. We will be attaching a podium mic and 3 wireless hand held mics to facility discussion. Pretty cool.

    Thanks for the very helpful presentation. Without it I would still be lost because I haven't found a manual specifically for this device. One comment. While you do point out the distinction between USB 1-2 and USB 3-4, there is a very confusing layout in the third column on the face of the device: the on/off button for USB 3-4 is situated within the boundaries of a volume controller labelled 5/6. I guess the controller of that section controls the line-in audio that is two boxes above it. The volume control for USB 3/4 is in the section between the sections labelled "line-8" and "5/6." Shouldn't the on/off switch for USB 3/4 be within that section? I don't understand the thinking behind that choice for the layout.

    • @GregintheBox

      Hi Mohammed, thanks for the complement and the Sub. With regards to your question, when using an audio interface it is best and most common that the interface or mixer handles both the audio in and out for your computer. Now you can choose the mixer or interface as the input choice and the motherboard audio headphone jack as the output option, and if it works.... then great, but don’t be surprised if this mixed approach impacts the audio performance of you PC and software. Normally the audio device connected handles inputs and outputs. Besides, most good audio devices come with headphone jacks for this very reason. Best of luck.

    Great video! Thank you! Does it provide mix minus for the audio coming back in from USB?

    • @GregintheBox
      @GregintheBox  3 года назад

      an interesting question. it’s to simple of a mixer to provide true mix minus control. but what it does do, is this. if you choose the 1-2 channels (not 3/4) for the the USB return from your pc, then you can use the blend knob to control if you hear yourself and the signals coming back (ha ha, I like that “the other side”), or just the returning audio. your mic plugged into chan 1 or 2 still goes out to Zoom or a podcasting platform etc, but with the Blend knob turned all the way to the right (USB 1-2) you’ll only monitor the other end and not your mic. if you want to hear yourself and the other end, Dali up to 12oclock or your blend preference. and the good news, is that in a zoom call, for example, the other end does not hear themselves folded back even when the blend knob is dialed to 12 o’clock.
      and I know this is a “no-brainer” but it’s also assuming that you are all using headphones, not speaker monitoring on but ends of the online conversation. agreed?
      so it’s not mix minus in the true sense, but it’s pretty good for the price. :)

    Any idea how to solve latency issues with monitoring the I/O of the USB? I just started getting familiar with the profx12v3 and was doing some test recording and the analog signals have some serious latency, the vocal sounds robotic to severely delayed, the digital audio track playing seems to be just fine (setting buffer down to 8 samples cleans up most of it) I am just wondering if maybe I missed a knob or a button somewhere to clean it up. ( recording using waveform, haven't tried to monitor a live stream test yet) also does your mackie have a problem with the pan bleeding through or not panning fully? when i pan left for one track to record, and the other track right, they seem to still send a small amount of signal to the other side, enough to be seen on the meters and heard on the recording.
    other than those 2 issues, I am thoroughly impressed with the sound quality of the mixer, really looking forward to running the pa with it and recording/live stream. would have been really cool if they would have split up the assignments of 1-2 for each channel to eliminate the need to pan. I have been using an old spirit fx8 and while it worked well, not having the option to properly monitor the signal the PC sees made it tough to set up. It would sound great on the mix to the headphones or FOH, but the playback would be crap. The price was right for the mackie vs getting a multichannel sound card (s) for the pci slots and a second mixer to handle and monitor the direct outputs to each channel.

    • @GregintheBox
      @GregintheBox  3 года назад

      Hi Edwin - So first the obvious things to check on the mixer.
      Make sure the "FX" button for each channel is pushed in.
      Make sure the Stereo Pan button is out (up). That's the button with 1L on one side and 2R on the other. It should be off for live streaming as you are describing.
      Make sure the "FX To Main" knob is up a fair bit.
      OK, now, I will say that the testing I did and the video was done for USB connection to a PC or MAC laptop etc. So I can't say for sure if its not something related to using it with a lighting cable and a mobile device.
      The FX are going to my Zoom or live streaming as they should. I would test your mixer with a desktop or laptop computer.
      An easy test is to use Zoom or some other video conferencing software to call a friend and see how the effects sound on their end.
      If it works on a regular computer then at least you know you are and mixer are doing everything right.
      Let me know how it works out.
      Best of luck my friend.

    Great video! How do you deal with any latency issues?

    • @GregintheBox
      @GregintheBox  4 года назад +1

      Hi Amber, well....it really depends on what you are trying to accomplish. If you are recording and or using some form of processing it certainly can delay and you can hear and feel this latency which impacts your performance/experience. In cases where latency is expected, most of the time, direct monitoring is used to achieve over dubbing etc.
      If you are referring to experiencing a delay that you experience when attempting to play or sing in sync with others over the web in a platform like Zoom, then there is sadly no real solution for this since the delay incurred when your audio is sent out over the web and your friends hear this and then attempt to perform with you is considerable and is simply the reality of who the web works and the speed of the internet itself at this time. There are other software and platforms attempting to do better in this area but video conferencing apps (Zoom, Teams, Skype etc) are not intended for this use).
      You can certainly improve how you sound over the web, but in sync music playing together across the web is not realistic at this time. That said, here are two platforms that are attempting to do it better than Zoom etc.
      JamKazzam (Big learning curve, hard on the computer).
      Sofasession (Easier/browser based, not as hard on PC, less options though).
      Have fun.

      Correct, with a USB mixer/or interface, and a webcam style camera, OBS is not required in between with most online platforms. hey there. thanks. it a hard question to answer. there are several ways to do it and some experimentation will be required. you could consider connecting the stereo outs to the 1 and 2 channel inputs with an RCA to 1/4” patch cable. you can run a mic through your DJ mixer. for the return sound of the other DJs, I would select the profx1/2 as e audio out on your Zoom call and then use the blend knob on the ProFx mixer to balance the sound of your own music and the sound back from the other DJs or audience in zoom. your headphones should be connected to the phones out of the mackie mixer. try that.

    ...or can any of them go back along with the mix towards the Main Outs, including Usb L/R Out?? Thanks in advance. The buttons are driving me crazy, I want to avoid loop or delay on Zoom

    Good information! Thanks! QUESTION: Why didn't you plug the iPad / iMac into 5/6 Line input ? Thanks! ~Robert

      There are less options for control with 5/6. Converting it to the 1/4 plugs allows you to use a full set of channel controls. But of course, the beauty of a good mixer is flexibility, so im sure 5/6 line in would have great use in some situations as well. Thanks for the support.

      @@GregintheBox Thanks Greg! You win the RUclips award for fastest answer EVER! Thanks! I just want to send guitar backing tracks from my iMac to the mixer so my vocal mic, guitar and backing tracks all come out my studio monitors. I bought the ProFX10v3 and it is way to large for my workspace. ~Robert

    This was really helpful. Since Zoom has upgraded their software, the settings look a bit different, but I think I got them all sorted. My application is a virtual concert (Zoom) with backing tracks. I've used the same inputs you do in the video just to avoid confusing myself, but I'm finding the track volume is quite low in my headphones. I guess my goal/hope is that I can hear a mixed/blended signal in my headphones that the viewers on the other side of the Zoom will hear. Is that, in fact, a realistic goal?

    • @GregintheBox
      @GregintheBox  3 года назад +1

      Hi Clayton. it’s not a completely realistic goal. to hear a blend of what you sound like to the people on the other end, since Zoom does not fold back the audio that is sent out in anyway, since it is a video conferencing software first and primarily (and the delay induced would just be a echo that would make singing and performing impossible, that said, within the mixer you are her\airing the blend that you’re sending out to some degree. so if you like the blend of voice and guitar in your phones, you are definitely sending that same level out.
      I would be sure to use good gain structuring, for example, start a fresh approach to your mixer setup, turn your headphone volume down (to protect those ears), then set your volume controls for the channels and the master volume at maybe 12 o-clock, then start a zoom meeting. Open up the audio settings and apply the settings discussed in my video (--). Start adjusting the gain knobs until the voice and instrument as showing quite high in the audio level meter in Zoom. Once your signal shows good in Zoom(almost to the top), start giving yourself as much of the headphone master as you want until it sounds loud enough.
      And the best final check is to then call someone with good speakers or headphones (not the built in speakers in a laptop or cellphone (yuck), and hopefully good ears for music and ask them about the over all sound, blend, distortion level etc.
      try that my friend.

    Hello Greg, thanks for this great video. I noticed that there are only two XLR connections. What if we needed two mics (2 singers) and perhaps a keyboard and and guitar that needed to be added on... are there splitters? Or is there a need for a different kind of mixer? We are going to be doing an online concert with multiple singers and instrumentals as well as karaoke tracks. Sounds like a lot I know but I'd appreciate your help on this. Thanks.

      I actually have the Mackie ProFX10v3. It perfect chord a duo gig. Two vocals, two instruments, and still space to hook up your phone. And all the same features as this smaller one. More actually, It also has Compression each channel.
