Thank you very much for your reaction, David! But if you'd like to listen to REALLY high notes, please consider Dimash Kudaibergen - Confessa + Diva Dance. Far not every female singer can cope with such high notes, but this guy can :) ruclips.net/video/23HYymUjIHE/видео.html
Dimash is from Kazakhstan, and he got excellent education in classical music there. He became internationally famous after winning in Chnese version of "The Voice". He is now studying for his Master's Degree in theory of music (also in Kazakhstan), can play classical and traditional instruments.

Luckily that one is almost full proof.
What gets me is the lack of reaction often when the song picks up and she starts singing more powerfully and chesty compared to the intro.
And especially when she belts time to never hold our love... Which has always been one of my favorite parts. And it's a very good and high belt. And half the time people... Even people hearing her for the first time... Half the time they don't react to at all.
      That gets me!

Nightwish is all about a general soft and poetic ground theme, underlaid with metal heaviness. This song is on the softer end of their spectrum and relatively long. Go listen to almost any other song from the absolutely epic Wacken 2013 show for something heavier (Romanticide, Song of Myself, Ghost River, Dark Chest of Wonders, Storytime, ...). That should establish their "normal" spectrum pretty much, and then there the special "outlier" songs that make this band even more interesting, Greatest Show on Earth, Weak Fantasy and Sleeping Sun from the Tampere show, Devil and the Deep Dark Oceant, Dead Boys Poem from Buenos Aires and many many more.

Normally someone new to Nightwish is directed to "Romanticide" from the same concert, as a heavier contrast to this song. This performance is from the 2013 Wacken Open Air metal festival in Germany, where they were the headline act of the festival. They were singing in front of 82,000 people.
One of my favourites though is the Wembley Arena version of "7 Days to the Wolves" as they really get the place rocking. ruclips.net/video/XvsfwAPbWXc/видео.html
In "Ghost Love Score", we see the opera/musical theatre Floor. In "7 Days to the Wolves", we see more of the metal Floor. We also see Troy, the sixth member, who is a multi-instrumentalist playing the bouzouki in this performance, plus the Uilleann pipes (Irish bagpipes), guitar, plus a variety of flutes and whistles in other songs.
They have three vocalists, Floor Jansen on lead, Marko Hietala the bassist, and Troy Donockley. The band is from Finland, Floor is from the Netherlands and Troy is English.

You just summoned the Nightwish Army!) Thank you for your reaction!
Well, you've just witnessed Her Majesty Northern Valkyrie Goddess Floor Jansen (pronounced Yansen, she is Dutch). She has classical background, and used to be a vocal coach for a number of years. She is a very versatile singer and can sing anything from more pop-y style, classic opera, to metal screams and growls. And she is really tall, I mean 6'1 + hills.

Floor joined Nightwish in late 2012, and before that they had Anette Olzon as a frontwoman, and before Anette - Tarja (Tar-ya) Turunen.
Not all string sound you heard were produced by a keyboardist (Tuomas, and he is a masterming behind lyrics and music). They are using a backtrack recorded with a classical symphonic orchestra.
Nightwish is better live, always, so if live performance is available, go for it.
They have very diverse music, from more light songs to epic scores like that one, and to really heavy metal stuff.
For the next step, I can suggest listening to Storytime from the same Wacken 2013 live (pronounced Vaken, it is in Germany).
    Greetings from Moscow! :)

    • @mutleyeng
      @mutleyeng 4 года назад +1

mah, when you say she from classical background, that makes her sound like one the many that have a good voice and find a market in metal. But Floor is a metal head through and through, and you can see that in her face when she performs. She lives and breaths metal

    • @MrVagrod
      @MrVagrod 4 года назад +2

It is no more than just a fact, she studied opera singing for some time. Listen to her "O mio babbino caro" for example. She has this knowledge and this ability, but she prefers to sing metal, as she many times stated in her interviews. Quote:
"I've studied classical singing, but I'm way more at home in Heavy Metal."
And it is great that she can incorporate those elements in her career of a metal singer.

Not completly true. Tuomas is playing some parts of the orchestra live on his keyboard (the short strings at 09:10 for example) - and those are of course samples, or at least he is layering the samples he is playing with the backing track, but 09:53 sounds like "samples only" to me.
And to me this is completly fine, still sounds amazing AF!

Hello, @Hoopsick Reacts! Nightwish Army incoming here, your reaction just appear on our radar.. Your was a honest reaction, I really enjoyed it. I'll subscribe for that, to follow your discovery journey. They have several other songs of this lenght, but most of them are in "normal" size. Since this is your first Nightwish experience, here are some info that may help you navigate (a short history of the band, concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan):
" Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a female fronted symphonic metal band. They are from Finland.
Tuomas Holopainen, the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. Marco Hietala is the Bassist and vocals .And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen . Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrulmentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her.
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.
I want to welcome you to the Nightwish community. I hope you like them enough to continue the journey. Believe me Nightwish will surprise you with their songs. You will never know what to expect. They are unbelievable live. I want to warn you that Nightwish fans are hard core. So be prepared. lol "

Them being symphonic metal allows them to take their music in several different directions. They have the long epic multipart full production type songs like Ghost Love Score, The Poet and the Pendulum or The Greatest Show on Earth.. Then they have several of the more classic thrash heavy metal style songs like Romanticide, Song of Myself or Dark Chest of Wonders.. They even have a very celtic rock sound going on in songs like E'lan or My Walden.. You chose, but the Nightwish Army loves it all..

I actually really enjoyed your reaction. I have only been a fan of Nightwish for just over 18 months, having been lead into the Symphonic Rabbit-Hole when I heard 'Exit Eden ' recorde a rendition of Visage's 'Fade to Grey' ( I am old enough to be a New Romantic from the very early 80's) , and suddenly I am confronted with NW!! They have quickly become my favourite band, and Floor Jansen (pronounced Yansen) my favourite singer. Her range is incredible and has taken the band to a whole new level. I would like to subscribe if you promise to react to more of their material. Anything 'live' after 2013 will include her fantastic vocals. Take care

I myself only discovered Nightwish a short while back. I am from Sweden but I moved to Ireland in 2003 (work) so I completely missed Nightwish'es rise to fame at that time. Trying my best to catch up now... Cheers / B

You have taken your first step into a larger world ;).
Ah - the Amy Lee reference... that's what a small reference pool does to you (no criticism here, my pool used to be pretty shallow way back when and it *is* shallow on some genres and topics ;) ), and she's not *bad* but ...Floor Jansen is... better? superior? supreme? ah let's just fix with she *is* *The Valkyrie* ;).
I'll leave you with my little gospel of advice here:
Route one: "Nightwish in concert" => see more videos of the 2013, 2015 and 2016 concerts, sampling the energy and inherent differences.
Route two: "The Magnum Opus Route" => you started with the *least* of those, "Ghost Love Score - 2013 Wacken", continue through the greatness, diversity and darkness of "The Poet and the Pendulum - 2015 Wembley" to the crowning magnificence and all the "longue durée par excellence"-glory of "The Greatest Show on Earth - Tampere 2016".
Then (or starting with it) go through the awesome but lesser songs, sample the diversity => listen to the folksy sad sea shanty of the other magnificent vocalist of the band in "The Islander - Tampere 2016", hear him in the morbidly beautiful "While your Lips are still red - Wembley 2015" , sample the wrist-full melancholy of "Èlan - Wembley 2015", the glorious optimism of "Alpenglow" in the same concert, hear Floor growl in "Yours is an empty Hope" in the Tampere 2016 concert, enjoy the soaring beauty of "Sleeping Sun" in the same concert and submerge yourself in the profound melancholy of "Nemo"in the Wacken 2013 concert.
There is much to enjoy, trust me (and all the others here - don't just follow *my* overly flowery written advice ;) ).
    Best regards
    Raoul G. Kunz

The music is called symphonic metal and is very populair in Europe and South America. The band is from Finland and founded in 1996. So far the band has had 3 vocalists
1 Tarja Turunen (Finish) pure opera voice also very good live. (until 2005)
2 Anette Olzon (Swedish) more pop style. fine in the studio but not good live. (until 2012)
3 Floor Jansen* (Dutch) (current). * She is the vocalist you saw in this clip. She has a classical vocal background education and can sing any style she likes from jazz to opera high to growling low. Believe me when i tell you you have not even scratched the surface yet of what she's capable of.
    Band members
Tuomas Holopainen (The keyboard player and creative mind behind the band. He writes about 95% of the music and lyrics)
Marco Hietela (the viking with the long beard (Bass and vocals)
    Jukka "Julius" Nevalainen (The drummer)
Erno "Emppu" Vuorinen (the hobbit like guitar player)
Troy Donockley ( a person who did not play on this song but is a multi instrumentalist from the UK)
The clip was shot a few months after Floor jointed the band right in the middle of their US leg of the world tour. They asked her to join after tensions between the previous (Anette) vocalist and the rest of the band had rissen so high that they fired her. With close to a year still to go to complete the tour, and their next concert planned 2 day later they, needed a replacement fast. They called Floor because she had toured with them when she was part of the support bands"After Forever" and later "Revamp" on several occasions and they were quiet impressed by her vocals (who would not be?). She only had 2 days, including a flight from the Netherlands to the US, to learn the setlist and only had one rehearsal with the band a couple of hours before her first show and nailed it. Since they were making a documentary about the world-tour a lot of what happened was recorded. The documentary is called "Please learn the setlist in 48 hours" (ruclips.net/video/vhExkmWKMEU/видео.html )
As a next song to take a look at i would recommend their masterpiece "The poet and the pendulum" live at Wembley. Before you take a look at it i would recommend to take a look at the backstory of this song. This will make you appreciate it much more. here is the link ruclips.net/video/gbn9GczYBkw/видео.html

Great reaction! You stumbled on to something new and enjoyed it. Just like me a while back. I listened to After Forever, the former band of Floor Jansen, 20 years ago. And still have them in my playlist. But Nightwish is the ultimate symphonic metal band. Their compositions are versatile and genius. Some of of their songs are split up in multiple parts, so awesome (the Poet & the Pendulum, The Greatest Show On Earth, etc). And other songs have definite celtic influences (Elan, Alpenglow, I want my tears back). And there is heavier stuff, like Romanticide, Song of Myself, Last Ride of the Day, Ghost River. Now they 3 amazing singers in the band, Floor, Marko the bassist and Troy who plays all kinds of instruments who brings the celtic fibe. Stick to live performanced. F.i from Wacken 2013, Wembley 2015 and Buenos Aires 2018. Great audio and video. I will always watch your reactions to Nightwish. Have fun with them!

Ghst Love Score is a perfect start for this. From here you can explore so many different faces of Nightwish and of Floor. One big difference between Floor and Amy is her enormous range: From Opra, over Pop, Rock to Metal including heavy growls.
    Some suggestions for next stops:
Everdream / Storytime (both WackenFestival 2013) for the less heavy songs.
Romanticide / Last Ride of the Day (both Wacken) for the heavier stuff.
Yours an Empty Hope (Wembley - Have a look who's growling)) / Devil & The Deep Dark Ocean (Buenos Aires) for the more metal side.
Maybe a bit later the two very epic songs:
The Poet and The Pendulum (Wemble - read the storyehinfd it first) / The Greatest Show on Earth (Tampere)
Apart from that Floor solo at "Beste Zangers" (a DutchTV show "Best Singers" where singers sing songs for each other):
"The Phantom of the Opera"together with Henk Poort
"Shallow"Floors very sensual version of this song by Lady Gaga

Nightwish is an amazing band. The keyboard player, Tuomas Holopainen, is the main songwriter of the band and writes pretty much 90% of everything you hear from them and you could literally pick any song from their 20-years history and most of them will be amazing, and all of them somehow different from one another but still sound like Nightwish and easily recognizable as such.
I suggest Storytime - Live at Wacken 2013 (official live video) as a song to react to next. It's heavier and more "commercial" -like than Ghost Love Score (don't kill me for saying that, Nightwish army) but still epic and full of little details you don't hear as much in other bands.
Another great band I recommend checking out is Epica, also in the Symphonic Metal genre. Try the song Sancta Terra Live ft. Floor Jansen. The singer from Nightwish that you just heard is featured as a guest vocalist :)

Welcome to Nightwish! This epic band will take you through an emotional roller-coaster ride. The keyboard player, Tomas, who writes the majority of their songs is a musical modern-day Mozart. His compositions and song transitions are masterfully arranged. The other band players are great musicians also adding to the Nightwish sound in a perfect blend of harmony. Last but not least the singer, Floor Jansen, who is the third singer in the band. Well I could say a great deal about her but any praises would not do her justice. And I think it would serve you well to experience it for yourself without any biased opinions. And to guide you in the right direction you should watch/listen to any songs from their live shows from Waken 2013, Buenos Aires 2018, Tampere 2015 and the show called "Beste Zangers" during which Floor displays her talent singing in different vocal styles and languages. You have opened the door to and experience like no other. I'm not saying this just to flap my gums. I'm in my 50's, been a hard core metal head most of my life, heard many great bands and great singers. But I've never been star struck until I've heard Floor sing for the fist time about a year ago

Nice reaction, it's good to see you analyze and digest the sound without trying to pigeonhole where it sits. Nightwish has a wide range of sounds from the various stages of their 24 years, the weaving melodies driven by keyboardist and band mastermind Tuomas Holopainen are ever-present.
I strongly encourage a deeper dive into NW, while not the creators of the genre they have led it for 2 decades. Some other European bands worth checking out that offer a different orchestrated sound:
Wintersun 'Sons of Winter and Stars' studio playthrough
Dimmu Borgir 'Mourning Palace' from the Forces of the Northern Night dvd
Opeth 'Ghost of Perdition' live at Red Rocks

Love Nightwish!!! This is a softer Nightwish, usually a good place to start if u never heard the band before. Try Romanticide or Ghost River from the same concert.

that was a great NATURAL reaction, a lot of times I suspect the reviewer has already heard the song they are reviewing before, many times probably, even tho' they try and get you to believe this was the first time they had 'heard' it, but your was a completely natural reaction from someone who obviously was listening to it for the 'first'; time, well done.

I'm a simple girl, I see a Nightwish reaction video, I smash like.
I can't experience them for the first time again, but seeing others do so is almost as good.

Greeing from South of France !!!! it's seems you discovering Nightwish.... they are great... you're right... enjoy your travel in their musical poetry world !!
one thing you have to know : all of their albums are masterpieces... (Poet and pendulum (15 minutes) / greatest show on earth (23 minutes of pure poetry - live in tampere ! those 2 songs are musical stories you have to listen and watch) they have so much beautiful songs in fact : swanheart, phantom of opera, song of myself, our decade in the sun, ever dream, storytime, shudder before the beautiful, bless the child, wishmaster.. and many many more more to listen !
if you want to discover other nordic / symphonic / metal music, try those bands :
Epica (Great band also - 2 duets with Floor !)
Within Temptation (duets with Tarja, Anneke, and Amy Lee ( they were supposed to do concert with Amy this spring in Europe, .. but unfortunatly events..)
Delain : Charlotte Wessels a great vocalist too ...
Other great bands but little bit differents :
The Gathering (Paper Wave / Travel / Waking Hour.. so magical songs too)
Therion... more gothic, with great voices (2 male voices and 2 femelle voices) - with a particularity : their singers are not the same in concerts...
Euzen german group ! with Maria Franz an amazing singer too, she is actualy sing in the Heilung formation (nordic pagan music)...
If you want also an other musical experience try : Ayreon !!
Sorry for my english faults !
    Have a nice day :)

That whole Wacken concert is one for the ages. There's definitely heavier stuff in there that will induce head bangening.
It only takes a song or two to fall in love with Floor. She will be a rock legend whose legacy rivals Ann Wilson for range, power, and presence. Seriously.

Dude, gotta say I didn't notice it at first, but second time through I caught it. I was focusing on just your eyes, you went from kind of like, "alright, interesting", to the point where Floor was pulling you in, transitioning to being totally bought in, until the end where you experienced your Floorgasm. It was all in your eyes man. It can't be helped, she pulls you in. She is just a presence on stage, physically and vocally. You can't help but be caught up in the songs she sings. The band and Floor really feed off each other so well. They push each other higher and higher. That band plays so tight in the pocket and her voice just cuts through so well and she can change from one genre style of singing to another and bridge it so well with the band. Some fans call her a "Valkyrie", but to me she is like a "Siren". You can't help but be drawn in to that voice. Just being a regular dude myself, it's tough to admit this, but the very first time I seen this video, I found my eyes watering up. Still does sometimes. I'm marked for life by this performance. That'show deep it went. I was almost like that girl in the video just lost in the moment. LOL!

Floor is the third female lead singer. She is our 6"1 Goddess or Valkyrie. This also her third band the first band she was background singer and then moved to lead singer . She was 16 when she started but was about 18 to 20 yrs. old. Wait until she starts growling in "Yours is an empty hope".Empuu did the solo, Marco is the bassist and he also sings. The drummer quit about 2014 or 15 because of insomnia. Tuomas the key boardist writes 98 percent of all the songs.Floor is in excellent shape she tries to work out when she gets a chance.
