A day in the life of a software engineer. I worked really hard on this video and I hope y’all enjoy it! This is a fairly typical day in my life as a software engineer. I understand I may have glossed over a few things, so please, leave your questions below!
This video is sponsored by Skillshare.

I document and share my experiences on topics including computer science & software engineering. I'm a full-time Software Engineer and a part-time RUclipsr. My less nerdy activities include fishing, hunting, surfing, and snowboarding. I'm just here to have some fun.

Totally unrealistic....he plugged in the USB cable on the first try!
Lol, you've got a sharp eye
Lol, what's unrealistic in that
Wow you've got sherlock holmes level of observing people!

Wow, the first video where they talk about their actual job. Not just eating and staring at the screen. The best one I’ve seen! Love your content!
I'm glad you enjoyed it!
So True
This video ended alot of softdevs youtube careers. lol
Maybe i am watching day in the life videos just because of the food?
I just scrolled down to the comments to say this! The rest of these videos are so pointless I almost didnt even click on this one. What a pleasant surprise.
Finally a Software Dev/Engineer that actually showers. I thought I was alone in this world...
Every Engineer/Developer showers it's just a stereotype that they don't shower
Matt Fenlon you shower once a week...thats gross
@Danxry How about you?
Arwah Sapi everyday.

Pornhub should be there.
He wakes up and gets off the bed immediatey. When I wake up I need to roll on bed for 10min and then complain about getting out off the bed and then I can get off the bed.
He did all that why setting up the camera lol, nobody escapes the early morning
@@J90JAM I literally run out of bed the moment I hear the alarm go off
@@insitakaya1672 I power jump of the bed.
At least he gets to wake up an hour before I have to. I set my alarm as the one that pisses me off the most.
I have watched a ton of "day in the life of software engineer" videos that other RUclipsrs have created and not to talk bad about other ones, but this one is the first one that I have encountered that has been realistic and informative. I really enjoyed this video, keep up the great work and videos Forrest!
no like for real he literally talks about his job and not just a dry overview of like them at a keyboard fast fowarded really cool!
Have you seen a day in the life of a Japanese video game developer?
It's pretty much to what I'm doing at my company during my internship. I'm really glad that we have a pretty similar day 😍! Good job!
Fake! This isnt a day in the life of a software engineer. Where is the multiple coffee breaks? No fake-ass-typing-keyboard pretending to code? Why is there so much work? Wait, a breakdown into the process of ur work? This is unreal
Finally a real A Day In A Life Of A Software Engineer. Thumbs Up!
it's because everyone else copying mayuko
as a person working software, it is true I do sometimes pretend to code and then browse on my phone when no one is around
It's true, when I've got no idea what to do I pretend to type
John Wig ok
This made me feel better because I do some of that fake ass typing when I'm frustrated with a piece of code and have to take a break.
Thanks for actually showing what you do unlike other software engineers! This is much more informative and gives me great insight. Definitely earned a subscriber.
Thank you for making this video. I plan on becoming a software engineer when I grow up(I have a lot to learn though). Discovering this channel and video has inspired me even more.
Thanks love your vidoes always great !! You’re a main reason why I changed my major to computer science and been loving it since I found your videos last year keep it man much love from Cal Poly Pomona !!👍🏾👍🏾
I'm happy to help. I appreciate the support and good luck with CS!

@IIyass on my momma!!! 😂😂😭
Too earlyyy
Too earlyyy
I'm gonna do this but it's gonna be "A day in the life of a Mcdanolds employee"
I would watch it
Impossible to film yourself if you aren't a drive thru worker. I work at McDonald's and you can't use your phone during the shift. Only during break times. :P
McDan
Is it better than this lol
The horror
Finally, a vlog where you actually show what you're working on. You have a new subscriber, cheers buddy!
This vid showed up in my recommenced and I liked it so much I went back and watched like 50 of his other vids. Extremely useful if you’re interested in computer science
It has arrived 👏👏😅
Love the fast paced editing style.
Much appreciated!
As a 20 year old in his first year as a CS student, you are my hero. These videos are amazing
My exact Panda E order every time I go. Subbed.
Awesome video! Best video of “a day as a software developer” I have found. Thanks for actually sharing the details of what you actually do at work.
pretty balanced life I would say which is not easy, good job dude!
Just loving it. Realistic! Great music. Learn a lot. Studying software engineering. Thanks for the headsup
This is great. Finally an explanation of what really happens in this line of work! Thanks man👍👍
I remember a couple of years ago when I was choosing my major, I searched for day in the life videos of software engineers and they all sucked. This one is actually realistic and good! Glad you made this!
I use to watch your videos when I was working a regular job and going to college. Now I work the 9 to 5 as a IT. Thank you for your videos
Great video! I liked how you played with the camera in a CaseyNeistat-like way! Keep it up dude
Awesome video! Beautiful sights on your way to work!
I liked the editing and realistic perspective 👏👏
I was losing motivation on my job as a software engineer but your video somehow made me realize I like my job and what I do, so thanks a lot for this! (I am definitely going to share this video to whoever asks me what my work is like.)
I like how you have done it properly, wished I could have seen your video before making one. great job!
Indian River Road! This is by far the best DITLO video I’ve seen yet. Realistic. Appreciate your content Forrest!
Wow ! Great insight! Thanks , this is so much better than 99% of the day in the life software engineer video!
Awesome video, great editing! Keep up the good work pal.
I think software engineers are amazing! I can’t even begin to think about all the skills you would need to acquire to do that work!
Signed up for skill share! Thank you for the info and you have a new sub.
That was the best way I’ve ever heard anyone on RUclips ask you to subscribe. Didn’t sound pushy, lame, or annoying. 👍🏼
Thanks for making this video man! By the way, the style of your house looks really cool!
great content i really liked it , keep going bro !!!
I've also been working as a software engineer for a year, sitting at a desk inside all day is also getting to me! It's something you know but you don't actually realize until you get there.
Thank you for actually showing your screen
Sure thing! I did as much as possible but of curse had to blur/cover at moments.
Best "day in the life of software engineer" video I've seen. Good work!
Wow this is the most sincerely video of a software engineer it's not only eat and go to walk like the others videos on RUclips, greetings from Dominican Republic
This was awesome! Thanks for uploading
It's really cool how similar our day-to-days are. I'm working on Integration testing for PLM and just had a meeting about our GIT flow workflow.
Love your videos dude!
Thanks Forrest for making some of the best software development content on RUclips.
Thanks for reminding me why I chose my major. Only a few semesters left.
Thanks Forrest for this great vid!
Yes, Panda! Sold. Good video dude, great editing, keep it up!
I like vids of this kind.I like your editing too.Good job sir
thank you so much for the skillshare link! I have finals coming up and I want to get an internship at Google and I know this will help!
Thank you for the support! Good luck with getting the internship!
Edit: Oh, and finals of course.
ForrestKnight thank you😂 I’m gonna need it
Quality stuff keep it up, and i'm studying software engineering and i want to know what kind of software process does your company work on and what kind of software testing you do? I'm very bored with the theories of the subject "Software Engineering" 😐
Thx my dude this is the career I wanna follow but I was nervous to be stuck u seem good tho I'm going for it jow
I have never seen a drive-thru Panda Express before. Neat.
If you didn’t work and didn’t need that VPN to connect to the thing. Would you still code in Linux Ubuntu or just in macOS or Windows? Environment?
Hey Forrest, love the content! just a quick question, what platform do you host your VM on? Thanks!
This is my day EXACTLY. I'm also a software engineer. Except I get interrupted by like 3 meetings a day minimum. Can't get shit done in the office so I end up working late at night to do any actual work. Blows.
Nice Video! I've only just recently found your channel and it's awesome! Keep it up :)
Thank you!
Hey I learned from this video one way to arrange git branches for a project. Subscribed!
Joe Hsiao lol, nice
noticed the ODU tumbler, glad to see another monarch doing great :D
Good video! Greetings from Chile!
When I was developing almost 50 years ago (before pcs) I worked on several projects at once. I would arrive at work, read some core dumps, wrote up patches and submitted them to keypunch for correction.
When machine time became available I would walk down the hall into the data center and ran a few assemble jobs. I wrote strictly in assembler as the machine only had 48k of main storage. Reviewed output and sent corrections to keypunch. Ran several jobs for testing and reviewed output for correct results. Wrote up run time documentation for the operators.
Scheduled time at night to install vendor updates to operatiing system. I would arrive at night when time was permitted to update the system with correct patches and build new system disk packs for operation.
Sometimes other programmers would come in at night for large sysyem integration tests and verify proper operation.
Our facility would process approx $20 million in credit card transactions.
One data center I was responsible for had 13 different vendors of equipment in a 200x200 foot raised floor data center.
@@bilaltariq7819 I still have some of my code running to this day! Way before "shared libraries" i developed a method for COBOL to call subroutines dynamically. IBM said it couldnt be done, but I managed to get it done. IBM called them transient phases.
Good Job Forrest!! Love your videos! Keep up the good work!!! Btw, a question, do you prefer what operating system? Windows, Linux or MacOS? Do you use MacOS for programming or for terminal stuff?
Literally the first day in the life video in which I actually learned something (while also enjoying the content) Keep it up man!
It's finally here!!
Wow. We have the same Panda order. I felt that
#1 - Wake up with GoPro fixated on head
Cool Vid!!
New to your channel it's just awesome
About to be going into college for computer science/programming. This was a great video man, thank you!
I’m sorry be strong
Nice video. Good that you talked about what you actually do as a sde
Sweet video man! I landed a dev job for after graduation in a few weeks, and am excited to get started! What type of dev are you currently working as?
Lmao you didn’t stand up during the stand up boi you wild
THE GREATEST VIDEO AND CHANNEL ON RUclips !
Good quality video man👍

Nice! I've heard that exact JRE podcast
this beat is fiiiiire!
Thank you for this amazing content . Really appreciate it. Could you please reply how you manage your time in self learning like understanding a new technologies or programming languages etc etc ..
Please reply
I'm sure agile is an amazing way of working when used correctly...
But on my work I'm getting tired of constant and multiple daily meetings that got way off topic. Sorry for the rant. Amazing video. Subscribed.
j m same, shit makes me want to nut in my own eye socket
Love this video! Just subscribe
Can't wait to see the new setup
And i have a ques. about the Open source CS degree... Can you divide the courses into 4 sections, and tell what should we study with what... like semesters ... i'd appreciate that a lot
How you feel about agile? sometimes i find between grooming, planning and stand ups it takes away a lot of time from work. But sometimes those meetings can be useful
I have those same leather Vans! I only say something because it took me a month to get them in size 12 because they were sold out everywhere and had to ship them from another state.
00:00 You were trying to cross the border, right? Walked right into that Imperial ambush, same as us, and that thief over there.
"I love you!"
"Bye."
Thought i wasnt gona like it since i didnt like most other videos. But this is real and genuine. ♡
9:27 i know this has nothing to do with the purpose of the video but for some reason i clicked like once i saw that lol
Love your videos
Keep up the good work!
Sir, can you tell the configuration of your computer and can your VM handle the heavy workload??
Hi forrest great vid! Was just curious if Ubunto on the dev enviroment was your or the employers choice, and any particulair reason? Best J
Hi, thank you for sharing. May I ask what camera you use?
Finally a day in the life video with actual work!
Oh mein Gott! It's an engineer/dev with a RUclips channel instead of a RUclipsr with an engineering/cs degree! Subbed and recommended to my friends.
My routine is pretty similar go in at 9am take 30min walk lunch leave at 5pm and I got fired...
Its funny how accurate this is, we even use the same tools at my job lol
Lucky you can alter your desktop setup we have to use company laptops and use their given duo monitors but i dont hate it as its all smooth!
Most realistic one I’ve seen so far
I work from home. I would love an office environment mainly to have a trigger in my routine for my brain that lets me know I'm "at work". What's an affordable (free?) solution for me do you think?
Really helpful video!
It seems really stressful sometimes.
Yea, it can be.
I saw in ur previous videos u were using Mac OS. I wanna know why u switched . I also wanna become a developer and get into data science and machine learning.. wanna know why u think is best should I switch to windows or remain on Mac OS.
If you don't mind me asking, what is that notebook that you use during meeting? At 2:55 mark in the video? Thanks in advance!
Hello! Thanks for the video! I have one question: how do you connect 2 monitors to your laptop?
Docking station
Not a s/w engineer just passing by. I didn't notice that ring untill the phone call, I guess I was too focused on the face😂. Great video
At last, a 'day in the life of SE' video where one is actually showing what they do in the office and not how they live, travel, eat and hangout all day...😍😍😍
