@userJohnSmith Definitely makes me miss the good ol' days when I worked for a small company and just got engineering work done without most of the same overhead, but I definitely don't miss the pay haha
@@victord8866 Lol I'm assuming you were intending to use those data points so the software could help them adjust their company so they could manipulate the rotation rate after learning the discrepancies of promotions/salaries? @@jonathananderson7990 That's a rather tautological and periphrastic way of putting it, but you're sort of right. The promotion/salary data allows you to build the data points you'd base your model on. Other data categories should be included, but it is common knowledge that those are standard predictors for whether employees try harder or quit. What's funny is that they were asked to predict staff rotation specifically (employees moving to and from specific jobs), and yet they weren't given any data on employee promotions which literally tells you which jobs they were moved to and from. That's like me telling you to build a prediction model on how much ice cream I can expect to sell to my current customers in the future, and then refusing to give you the amount of ice cream I'm currently selling to them now.

@@selahattins1644 I admire your curiosity! There's a wide range of things a bioinformatician can find themselves doing. I think it falls into either 1) Use statistics to find patterns in biological/genetic data or 2) Create tools to improve existing methods and support researchers. I myself do #2, I enjoy designing software applications and making peoples lives a little easier. The applications for #1 are ENDLESS, here's a short list: -analyze gene expression data to determine what genes are associated with certain traits (like cancer or schizophrenia) -analyze variations in DNA to determine how likely it is a variant is contributing to a trait -put together DNA profiles of organisms that have never been modeled before (like certain monkey species or ancient DNA) -Develop a statistical method to determine how likely it is someone might contrive a disease or outcome based on their genetic/symptomaic profile (really useful for medical pre-scanning questionaries or genetic tests) The end goal of bioinformatics is to improve our ability to predict if someone will develop a deleterious trait, or to develop biological-based methods to treat deleterious traits. Most of the time this involves drug development, but with new gene editing technologies the possibilities are definitely expanding. I hope this helps!
I am in my last year of studying bioinformatics and I am so happy to find one in the wild hahaha! Never occured before. As a developer who's been in the industry for over 10yrs, I can say, _thank goodness_ for good project managers to buffer us away from that CEO client BS. Tip for anyone who manages engineers: Don't let them mix with your client CEOs unless they're particularly proficient in bullshittery. It'll only cause your company more problems when they call the company's CEO to yell at them because their engineer laughed outright at their blockchain-machine-learning-IOT feature. Nearly lost too many clients in the past due to fellow engineers (and even myself once) miscommunicating with a CEO. CEOs wanna dream, devs wanna get the thing done. Worst combination to throw together when reluctant. Great combination when working on the same side and understanding.

Engineer here as well, but on mechanical design for an aerospace tech company. When I was working from home full time during Covid(we still work from home but it's only 2x a week now), whenever I had a late night, I'd only literally wake up on the first team meeting of the day which was around 1 hour after the actual time work starts and attend the meeting basically still half asleep for the first few mins and just comb my hair with the cam off cause of my usual bed hair until I turn it on after I fix it. Then I'd really only eat breakfast and do morning stuff after the meeting and come back to actually work after like another hour. So I basically just waste 2 hours usually before I actually start working which I'd also offset by only timing off until much later...which can be one of the reasons why I'd stay up late in the first place. It's an endless loop lol. Depending on how complex the design is though, I can usually just catch up pretty easy, just happened that most complex product designs usually can take months to even years to finish. Although we use Zoom for meetings, Teams has a notification for it and I basically have it at 100% volume with my laptop on standby mode, so it's basically my alarm clock lol. The good thing I say about our work culture was that after your shift ends, that's it you're basically free from work. Most of the time, managers understand your shift is done and won't bother you. There are some exceptions, but those are rather few and far between and would mostly occur once you're at a higher technical level where they need your skills, CND is near, or are part of the management team. The only time I experienced still working after shift/being called into a meeting was when I became a lead/focal engineer for a project, but most of the times outside that I'm very much free after work. But meeting frequencies really isn't an issue for me, it's more of dealing with directors, engineering managers, customer reps(usually engineers as well), even vps for departments and ceos, which I shit you not can be intimidating even in online meetings especially since we're in aerospace it has very strict standards with little room for tolerance(our customers are companies like Boeing, Airbus, government, and private airline companies). Which is the biggest reason why I keep declining any management offers that has been continuously given to me over the years ever since I got offered a supervisory role for my team a year before covid.
This is painfully 100% perfect! Here's a tip. If you want to avoid someone on Teams, open a new Meeting and log in, just yourself. It may look like you are busy in a call with someone.
Your job reminds me of my moms at home marketing insurance job. The idea of making stuff work without much help and human obstacles really resonates with me and I thought this video was well done. Thank you
Oh my gosh, I was completely absorbed for the whole 8 minutes of this, and I couldn't be happier I found your video. Great job man, you deserve a raise. Go tell your boss I said that.
It's mostly because of the slight delay in the video chat. It's worse again being in Australia and so many US-centric services. The 200+ms ping over the Pacific cannot be improved!
I work in cyber, 100% remote, and this video is so accurate it hurts, haha. I have encountered basically all of these situations. I'll definitely be coming back and re-watching later, I had several laugh out loud moments.

I'm not even a software engineer nor do I have anything to do with coding, but the useless meetings where no one pays attention, one hour of actual work per day and annoying notifications are probably a universal thing.
Everything depicted in this video is so true. Especially the part about people messaging you in the evening. With work from home people think the workday pretty much never ends and it's okay to just message someone at 9 pm to get some issue fixed.
Very true. I think it's crucial for people to just tune out after 5:00-5:30 (or whenever your day would normally end). Working endlessly does not make you more productive, just less happy. I fell into the "work till 9pm" trap early on in the pandemic and it made me exhausted. At some point I made the conscious choice to never work past 5:30, no matter what, no exceptions. My life is so much better as a result.
Yeah you have to stop that shit now. We should work less because we are more efficient but we are working more sorry that is the wrong way. You live your best years at work so think about that. Nobody ever said on their death bed I wish I could have worked more.
From the material I read in most developer books, when the customer want new ideas for their projects, its best to not agree to everything they want. Joma did the right thing when he asked, "do you have machine learner developers he can work with?", this is typical the move that keeps the customer in check because they do not think it through.
Had an all hands meeting recently where the ceo was harping on "If the customer wants something and its not in the template, what do you tell them? No! If they ask again? No!" Letting the customer put in whatever they want is a good way to get screwed
@@razordrive3238 Wow, how the time flies. I'm currently working in my field now but I haven't been assign any projects yet. However, when this day come, I hope that I can help new talent understand this concept
Nope...todays customers want people who agree to everything....doesn't matter how stupid it is. If you use common sense...you loose. Main goal is to get much cash as possible. THAT IS REALITY ! And Joma portrayed it perfectly in his video.
This has actually happened, we were talking about starting a project and the guy just randomly mentioned how we should use machine learning, I knew I had to get out of that project.
As a former professional graphic designer, the client meeting is spot on. I worked directly with CEOs so much that it was part of the reason I changed my career xD

With markets tumbling, inflation soaring, the Fed imposing large interest-rate hike, while treasury yields are rising rapidly-which means more red ink for portfolios this quarter. How can I profit from the current volatile market, I'm still at a crossroads deciding if to liquidate my $125k bond/stocck portfolio
I mean, the guy does not really care about what machine learning does, he just needs to be able to use it in his sales pitch! It could be learning tic-tac-toe for all he cares, as long as he can say "machine learning" to his shareholders Kinda like in the 2000's when any company with "X" and "com" in it's name would just sell better 😆
I'm not an engineer at all. I'm a pricing guy but this is still extremely relatable as a work from home employee and someone who has to operate very independently. Even the meeting with the client CEO is relatable. I just deal with BD and sales people who have hairbrained ideas and don't understand the numbers and data or proposal I put in front of them.
I used to write massive emails for our sales people anticipating the data questions that clients would ask them so that they could either forward my email on to them or refer to it in their call to the client.
Finally! Found this video, I watch it 2 years ago and I couldn't remember the title and then I searched "my daily life work from home" and I found it. This video such a vibe and dream actually.
@@djorgs But you know like machine learning and AI super cool right? I know we are just a company using shopify but will be good right? Hope you have it for the next meeting bye
Yup. Clients want us to make something that does their job and they still expect to get paid for it. I'm like dude if I knew how to analyse the data I might as well do your job. My job is to give you the data, not to analyse it.
This basically summarizes the vibe one year into lockdown. Also, if you're a student you will often unironically schedule meetings at 8PM since it works for everyone.
It is quite different from my experience. My experience is customers are usually in the wrong time zones and they will set up meetings after meetings at like 5am.
Yep, it turns out I actually have severe anxiety from MS Teams notifications. PRO TIP: 1. go to Teams settings and select native system notifications. 2. go to sound settings on your OS, notification. 3. select a quick, soft sound for notifications, with a 100% volume of it, being actually decreased to 30% of the original. 4. after your day is over turn on Focus mode on your OS so no more annoying notifications. Regain your mental health! 🌿
I would recommend shutting down your work pc. If you do not have one shut down teams and any email or whatever program from work. If you still need teams for private usage then set up a docker/vm or whatever just to physically/virtually divide your work from your private time. Yeah as an engineer who actually makes things for a living this routine was infuriating. And I was in the office half the time. Our remote systems barely worked, nothing got done, I wanted to scream.

they made us build a model to predict staff rotation, they couldn't give us data on promotions and salary for privacy reasons.....
They?
@@victord8866 Lol I'm assuming you were intending to use those data points so the software could help them adjust their company so they could manipulate the rotation rate after learning the discrepancies of promotions/salaries? Meaning at what rate individual employees quit or get fired in order to anticipate/ automate the hr/management teams department to either hire or adjust salary's to keep a preferred result. lol sorry I'm not an engineer but I find it amazing. Actually horrible at math but find the application brilliant. Would love to code one day.
Easy you make some random data & do ML with it. Makes the code run 50% slower but you did the job. Literally “stupid client request Oriented Programming”

Also that low-energy reddit chuckle at 4:15 earned you my sub, crying. 😂
Ikr so relatable
what does a bioinformatician do? just interested
The applications for #1 are ENDLESS, here's a short list:
-analyze gene expression data to determine what genes are associated with certain traits (like cancer or schizophrenia)
-analyze variations in DNA to determine how likely it is a variant is contributing to a trait
-put together DNA profiles of organisms that have never been modeled before (like certain monkey species or ancient DNA)
-Develop a statistical method to determine how likely it is someone might contrive a disease or outcome based on their genetic/symptomaic profile (really useful for medical pre-scanning questionaries or genetic tests)
The end goal of bioinformatics is to improve our ability to predict if someone will develop a deleterious trait, or to develop biological-based methods to treat deleterious traits. Most of the time this involves drug development, but with new gene editing technologies the possibilities are definitely expanding. I hope this helps!
I am in my last year of studying bioinformatics and I am so happy to find one in the wild hahaha! Never occured before.
It may look like you are busy in a call with someone.
this is a pro tip. I will abuse this.

I dunno how I’m just finding this video now. I’m not a coding engineer, but I am an IT technician and the part with the CEO was nailed down perfectly!
Heads of companies hearing hot new technology terms and want to somehow integrate them into their products and businesses. When oftentimes they’re asking you to make a circle fit a square and they aren’t taking no for an answer. 🙄
what's a technician? what are your day to day responsibilities? i'm kind of curious cause i'd like to land a job in tech support.
Joma, I think you need more monitors to increase productivity.
this video is something i just come back and watch multiple times a week, most times it's just running as a side window on my laptop when i finish my assignments for university, most of the sketches on this channel are stress busters and content production is just A1
"this video is something i just come back and watch multiple times a week" me too
i didn’t realize Joma had so much character range. where’s his Oscar?!
for real tho, Leo better step aside! someone give this guy a starting role in a tvshow/movie!
distress AND stress is what this video made me feel omg
“It uses machine learning”
“no we don’t collect information”

Ah, yes.
Of course.
And blockchain. We'll talk about that next time
If you think about it, he probably took less than a min to get ready. Faster than any millionaire morning routine out there. I’m gonna start incorporating this into my morning routine. Especially the part of wearing no pants. Now that’s a man who is confident in his own skin!
having no self routine in this stupid world full of self help and sh*ts lol Man of culture
the boy is brilliant beyond words but he sure does not know how to make an omelet
Although, I am a bit disappointed that I didn’t see a morning poop as part of his day in the life.
I watched my roommate at the beginning of Covid get paid 9 hours a day for 3 hours of work as an IT tech. I’m sure this is more work than usual for engineers.
You recruit badly then.
That freaking workaholic is making all of look bad! What about the work/life balance? The rest of us aren't obliged to match up that insane maniac!
Pretty sure he can do it in 1 if he wanted
3 hours..that's too much. More or less 2 hours are enough
Lazy people. Overpaid and underworked.
I love Jason travelling to his dentist appointment the whole time and Kevin with only his eyes in the screen😂.
This is supposed to be a joke, but now my life feels like even more of a joke...

Ah yes, mindset of 12 yo depressed girl. Nice one.
Blindr CEO is literally every mf CEO guy that I've met while working as engineer from home 🤣 even if it's a very small company
Not a swe but same, literally every single higher ups I met.
They are awful. They say so much without saying anything lol
It's a different lingo that helps get you promoted while actually producing fuck all 😆
I wish they could see themselves.
Well, they all graduated from the same script...
Brooo this shit is too relatable, even across the Atlantic. You killed me with your Blindr + AI robot = money rocket Powerpoint. What a piece of art that was 😂

I'm sure this is how some companies work, but if so, I feel bad for the employees. Sounds like a very painful and lonely job lol
