Also I can set up a nice comfortable office the way I like rather than some cubical farm in an office building. Once in a blue moon I miss the comradery or lunches with colleagues, but the occasional business trip helps fill that void.

The sad truth of software engineering is that it's a "work of art" rather than a "mule at work".. You usually can pull out the quality code in a fraction of your real work time, the rest of the time is spent on mulling over the solution while doing something else, laze a bit and then studying always more studying...

@@rdean150 that might also be the reason, why germany seems so productive yet has more free time then any of the hard working countries. 8 hour day, payed after hours (or mostly taken is the free time, which means, spending the time you had to work after hours someday as payed vacation), by law defined maximum work hour (i think it's 2 hours of overtime), payed vacation, 20-30 day vacation per year, payed sickness, by law you aren't allowed to work when a doctor diagnose a serious sickness, if you do you and your company aren't protected by insurances. Ofc not everything is awesome, leading positions are usually idiots, bosses are often old incompetent boomers, progress is handled like a death sentence for many people etc.

Its wealth comes from the distant past, less from the present. You're right that devs need breathing space and time for growth. But where do you see that when boomers occupy the leading positions and keep down the young? If there's no chance to advance your career, you might as well stop making an effort. And then the boomers will look to hire cheaper programmers elsewhere while they do the important job of communicating, delegating tasks, attending external seminars, organizing more meetings, team events, reporting to other boomers how your code didn't improve their old 20-page long spaghetti code full of go-to statements, magic numbers, global variables and poor variable names, code that they would not want to touch again.

@@julianorozco5201 Absolutely. I really struggle to get things done because there are constantly meetings with like an hour in between. An hour is not enough to get into the work properly, so I can’t do anything in that hour except answer emails. And I constantly get Teams messages about things which for some reason are always “emergencies” and need to be fixed asap. Very little focus time. Give me a couple of uninterrupted hours and I get the same amount of work done that would otherwise take me a week.

Recently got feedbacks from managers and clients that our team talk not enough on meetings... So relatable, So many people resigned from my project, some analysts assigned one production issue to solve which they were tracking for months, I was so lazy and as they are analysts I gave them fake updates like, " working on a custom exception handler", "testing the Roll back mechanism " etc They bought it, They tried to push it a little, so today is the first day I actually started working on it, And I solved it by adding one stupid annotation over the method, Now the analysts need me to show what all I did to solve the problem, God I miss my Engineer buddies who left
Haha as a dev who's had to WFH since Covid this is so relatable. For the past two years I've wishfully set my alarm at 6.30 am in the vague hope that I'd actually get a good morning routine in (exercise, breakfast, news etc) before work but it never happens .... it's just snoozing all the way to 8.50 am so I can log in at 9 am. Would sleep longer but our daily scrum is at 9.30 am however!
Sometimes I think these expectation/reality videos can be slightly exaggerated but it changed when my friend who works as an engineer said 90% of his job was searching google

I think all software developers that work from home have a combination of both types. Some days I'm up early and super engaged and there are others where I am totally out of it. Work always gets done however.
So accurate as to how I image all programmers are like. I'm not a software engineer, but I am a programmer who does what he likes (I'm still a teenager who doesn't have a job). I go to sleep too late, and I get up at 9, overwork myself with my personal projects, while avoiding school (I'm homeschooled), and I then spend all night watching youtube or a cartoon.
Sometimes is like this and is a bad feel when you are in there. When you work you lost time for you and start to feel unproductive, you want time for the work but also for you. Well, I guess that it depends of the Company, in my case my company exploit me and I ended borned
What's "going to sleep late" for you? When I was a teenager that was anything between 1 and 5 am! So getting up at 9 am seems still pretty responsible 😂

This vid has been amazingly accurate. XD Started WFH since covid and can confirm that I work mostly laying down. For one, it has been amazing for my bad back, but I kept feeling guilty and thinking, "this cant be healthy." Its a bit funny and relieving knowing that others are going through the same.
Thank you for this video. It just popped out in my recommendations right in the moment when I started to struggle with “reality” part. I’ve been working from home for almost a year without any workation. The first half of the year I’ve been doing good and been very productive. But the last couple of months… Pure hell. Sometimes I can just look at the monitor for an hour and still fail to gather any thought of mine. I’m currently working on a huge project (and this is extremely important project for my career growth), but because of my condition I started to miss all deadlines. I felt devastated, worn out and nerveless. Weeped a lot. Having mental breakdowns still every other day because I just cannot force myself to work even in mediocre pace. I blamed myself for my worthlessness, forgetting that I am a living person, not a robot. But you reminded me the opposite! Perhaps the "reality" part was exaggerated in the video for the sake of comedy, but I Iiteraly felt like I'm watching myself from the side without any exaggeration. Hope I’ll make it through, now I see I’m not alone and understood. Thank you very much again. Sometimes working from home is such a struggle. Sitting everyday alone, every day at home (I even almost stopped going out at all), doing the same thing for dozen of hours also everyday… Nothing changes and this is so frustrating.
You should try picking up martial arts. Spend some time each day practicing and remember to attend class whenever you can. It gets you moving and helps you to break lazy habits. It also helped improve my quality of work.
I too, have stopped leaving the house. It feels like my entire soul is exhausted. I wish my team would go into the office like once a week or something to build morale. Especially as I'm a junior dev.
WFH has a plethora of benefits. Construct a system of healthy habits. Example: If you have a patio - work from the patio. Put some plants out / bird feeder so you can see birds come up. Proven research has shown interacting or being around nature lowers anxiety & stress. Furthermore, realize that you’re not doing open heart surgery on a patient or brain surgery so don’t be too hard on yourself(make mistakes ). Also, buy a gym membership, someone mentioned mixed martial arts - you can do that as well. Start journaling. Apart from that take care of your mental health. If all else fails WFH is just not for you and that’s okay. I've been WFH as a cybersecurity engineer. I travel, cook, gym, etc. I'm just happy that I don't have to buy stupid office clothes 😄
I'm a uni student and feeling a lot like you right now. I have weekly offline classes so I did meet my deadlines, but I wouldn't say they have a high quality. The tips of leaving the house are great as I do get more productive in a public space like the library. It's hard for me to work at my house because the condition isn't condusive but I should be able to do something about it. I hope we can pull through the struggle
My developer career started with a year working at an office, then the pandemic hit and we moved to home. At the beginning it was hard. Time management is an art that takes time to master hehe. Anyways, they like to hear my neighbors rooster singing in the background when I join the daily standup :p

@@rdean150 that might also be the reason, why germany seems so productive yet has more free time then any of the hard working countries. 8 hour day, payed after hours (or mostly taken is the free time, which means, spending the time you had to work after hours someday as payed vacation), by law defined maximum work hour (i think it's 2 hours of overtime), payed vacation, 20-30 day vacation per year, payed sickness, by law you aren't allowed to work when a doctor diagnose a serious sickness, if you do you and your company aren't protected by insurances. Ofc not everything is awesome, leading positions are usually idiots, bosses are often old incompetent boomers, progress is handled like a death sentence for many people etc.

You're right that devs need breathing space and time for growth. But where do you see that when boomers occupy the leading positions and keep down the young? If there's no chance to advance your career, you might as well stop making an effort. And then the boomers will look to hire cheaper programmers elsewhere while they do the important job of communicating, delegating tasks, attending external seminars, organizing more meetings, team events, reporting to other boomers how your code didn't improve their old 20-page long spaghetti code full of go-to statements, magic numbers, global variables and poor variable names, code that they would not want to touch again.

I'm a full time system admin, focusing on windows and vmware. I usually do some coding in my free time and sometimes continuously do coding up to 6hrs without taking a break. It's because I love the way daily boring tasks are getting automated. I mostly use PowerShell & Python for my work. I can totally relate to this video.

@@julianorozco5201 Absolutely. I really struggle to get things done because there are constantly meetings with like an hour in between. An hour is not enough to get into the work properly, so I can’t do anything in that hour except answer emails. And I constantly get Teams messages about things which for some reason are always “emergencies” and need to be fixed asap. Very little focus time. Give me a couple of uninterrupted hours and I get the same amount of work done that would otherwise take me a week.
This is why people have to get back to the office. The loneliness has to be soul depleting.

This is sooo true... Hate those multiple useless meetings where I need to say 2 sentences in half an hour. Recently got feedbacks from managers and clients that our team talk not enough on meetings... But all our team members think that managers are talking too much and 10min meeting takes 30 minutes and every day/week same useless talking and scrum rituals

So many people resigned from my project, some analysts assigned one production issue to solve which they were tracking for months, I was so lazy and as they are analysts I gave them fake updates like, " working on a custom exception handler", "testing the Roll back mechanism " etc

They tried to push it a little, so today is the first day I actually started working on it,
And I solved it by adding one stupid annotation over the method,
Now the analysts need me to show what all I did to solve the problem,

Haha as a dev who's had to WFH since Covid this is so relatable. For the past two years I've wishfully set my alarm at 6.30 am in the vague hope that I'd actually get a good morning routine in (exercise, breakfast, news etc) before work but it never happens .... it's just snoozing all the way to 8.50 am so I can log in at 9 am. Would sleep longer but our daily scrum is at 9.30 am however!

I think all software developers that work from home have a combination of both types. Some days I'm up early and super engaged and there are others where I am totally out of it. Work always gets done however.
So accurate as to how I image all programmers are like. I'm not a software engineer, but I am a programmer who does what he likes (I'm still a teenager who doesn't have a job). I go to sleep too late, and I get up at 9, overwork myself with my personal projects, while avoiding school (I'm homeschooled), and I then spend all night watching youtube or a cartoon.
Sometimes is like this and is a bad feel when you are in there. When you work you lost time for you and start to feel unproductive, you want time for the work but also for you. Well, I guess that it depends of the Company, in my case my company exploit me and I ended borned
What's "going to sleep late" for you? When I was a teenager that was anything between 1 and 5 am! So getting up at 9 am seems still pretty responsible 😂

This vid has been amazingly accurate. XD Started WFH since covid and can confirm that I work mostly laying down. For one, it has been amazing for my bad back, but I kept feeling guilty and thinking, "this cant be healthy." Its a bit funny and relieving knowing that others are going through the same.

Thank you for this video. It just popped out in my recommendations right in the moment when I started to struggle with “reality” part. I’ve been working from home for almost a year without any workation. The first half of the year I’ve been doing good and been very productive. But the last couple of months… Pure hell. Sometimes I can just look at the monitor for an hour and still fail to gather any thought of mine. I’m currently working on a huge project (and this is extremely important project for my career growth), but because of my condition I started to miss all deadlines.
I felt devastated, worn out and nerveless. Weeped a lot. Having mental breakdowns still every other day because I just cannot force myself to work even in mediocre pace. I blamed myself for my worthlessness, forgetting that I am a living person, not a robot. But you reminded me the opposite!
Perhaps the "reality" part was exaggerated in the video for the sake of comedy, but I Iiteraly felt like I'm watching myself from the side without any exaggeration.
Hope I’ll make it through, now I see I’m not alone and understood. Thank you very much again.
Sometimes working from home is such a struggle. Sitting everyday alone, every day at home (I even almost stopped going out at all), doing the same thing for dozen of hours also everyday… Nothing changes and this is so frustrating.
You should try picking up martial arts. Spend some time each day practicing and remember to attend class whenever you can. It gets you moving and helps you to break lazy habits. It also helped improve my quality of work.
I too, have stopped leaving the house. It feels like my entire soul is exhausted. I wish my team would go into the office like once a week or something to build morale. Especially as I'm a junior dev.
Look at co working spaces you can rent monthly, they’re pretty chill and let’s you leave the house
WFH has a plethora of benefits. Construct a system of healthy habits. Example: If you have a patio - work from the patio. Put some plants out / bird feeder so you can see birds come up. Proven research has shown interacting or being around nature lowers anxiety & stress.
Furthermore, realize that you’re not doing open heart surgery on a patient or brain surgery so don’t be too hard on yourself(make mistakes ).
Also, buy a gym membership, someone mentioned mixed martial arts - you can do that as well. Start journaling.
Apart from that take care of your mental health.
If all else fails WFH is just not for you and that’s okay.
I've been WFH as a cybersecurity engineer. I travel, cook, gym, etc. I'm just happy that I don't have to buy stupid office clothes 😄
I'm a uni student and feeling a lot like you right now. I have weekly offline classes so I did meet my deadlines, but I wouldn't say they have a high quality. The tips of leaving the house are great as I do get more productive in a public space like the library. It's hard for me to work at my house because the condition isn't condusive but I should be able to do something about it. I hope we can pull through the struggle

My developer career started with a year working at an office, then the pandemic hit and we moved to home. At the beginning it was hard. Time management is an art that takes time to master hehe. Anyways, they like to hear my neighbors rooster singing in the background when I join the daily standup :p
