Michigan judges don't play. They are kind and level headed, but don't disrespect them. I had a judge put my phone in jail for 3 days because it went off in court. I wanted to be mad, but I couldn't stop laughing
Back in the '70s, my Mom worked for the Allegheny County court administrator for the civil division located in Pgh, PA. I got out of work earlier than she & I would stop in to watch hearings. Civil hearings were boring for the most part, so I'd walk over to the criminal court & watch them. There are a lot of nasty criminals out there. I didn't realize that until watching criminal trials. Most didn't make it into the newspaper or the 5pm news.
Thats the dumbest thing I've seen in a long time driving on zoom call when his drivers license is suspended. They should see if he'll come to the court house!

SWAT over biting a first responder? Doubt it was SWAT or a similar unit for something that trivial unless she was on parole and her officer violated her for it because that’s totally something a basic officer or officers would deal with.

The issue is there's 50-100 counties per state, and many have ancient computer systems and no budget. Jail status may be the Sheriff e-mails everybody a Word document every morning. There is a service, VineLink, but counties have to participate, and often don't update it in a timely manner.

For example, your email to Arty - the first one came the same time as the second one. What if you had sent it yesterday? Tomorrow would have meant today, but since it's already today he may not have shown up for your shared stream until tomorrow. Which we all know would have been too late. Do attorneys actually do these things?

It had been years since the death - defendant pled, was 78, respected in the community, had no criminal history, and had reconciled with the dead child’s mom so even the mom asked the judge to just give probation I think.

At least being incarcerated is a legally valid defense against failure to appear, since an inmate has no freedom of movement, it is up to the Department of Corrections(here in CT at least) to ensure inmates are brought to all court appearances. The issue, though(in my layman opinion), is that logic dictates that for the defendant to be incarcerated at the time of a court date, this failing to appear, he must have picked up new charge that put him in county jail after he already had a court date scheduled for a previous offense. So while a valid legal defense to FTA, it's not a good look and likely a bond violation, so still contempt.

I like Judge Gauthier. Strict, but also looking out for defendants. Some other judges responses/non-responses remind me more of a drama show.
