Almost 100 years after opening, Macy's flagship Union Square store is slated to close

  • Macy's planed closure of the Union Square location is a significant event in the city's retail landscape, ranking among one of the largest shutdowns the city has ever seen. Since 1929, it has stood as a landmark in Union Square, embodying decades of history and commerce. Sadly, it is just one of 150 stores slated for closure across the country.

    I’m sorry, but I’m going to call a spade a spade, and this is not political. At around the 5:00 minute mark of this video Mayor London Breed appears happy that Macy’s is leaving because she claimed it will open opportunities. This is unbelievable! Is she that delusional ? Why is she happy and smiling about a major institution leaving this city? She should have tried to do her darndest to make Macy’s stay.

    This is why Mary's and all the business left.
    Suppose that every day, ten men go out for dinner. The bill for all ten comes to $100. If they paid their bill the way we pay our taxes, it would go something like this:
    the first four men, the poorest, would pay nothing;
    the fifth would pay $1;
    the sixth would pay $3;
    the seventh would pay $7;
    the eighth pays $12;
    the ninth would pay $18;
    and the tenth man, the richest, would pay $59.
    That's what they decided to do. The ten men ate dinner in the restaurant every day and seemed quite happy with the arrangement --- until one day; the owner threw them a curve (in tax language a tax cut).
    “Since you are all such good customers,” he said, “I am going to reduce the cost of your daily meal by $20. So now dinner for the ten only cost $80.00.”
    The group still wanted to pay their bill the way we pay our taxes. So the first four men were unaffected. They would still eat for free. But what about the other six--the paying customers? How could they divvy up the $20 windfall so that everyone would get his 'fair share?'
    The six men realized that $20 divided by six is $3.33. But if they subtracted that from everybody's share, Then the fifth man and the sixth man would end up being PAID to eat their meal. So the restaurant owner suggested that it would be fair to reduce each man's bill by roughly the same amount, and he proceeded to work out the amounts each should pay:
    as before, the first four men paid nothing;
    now the fifth man also paid nothing (100% savings);
    the sixth man now paid $2 instead of $3 (33% savings $1);
    the seventh paid $5 instead of $7 (28% savings $2);
    the eighth man paid $9 instead of $12 (25% savings $3);
    the ninth man paid $14 instead of $18 (22% savings $4);
    leaving the tenth man with a bill of $49 instead of his earlier $59 (16% savings $10).
    Each of the six was better off than before. And the first four continued to eat for free.
    But once outside the restaurant, the men began to compare their savings. “I only got a dollar out of the $20 reduction,” declared the sixth man, but he, pointing to the tenth, “but he got $10!”. “Yeah, that's right,” exclaimed the fifth man, “I only saved a dollar too. It's unfair that he got ten times more than me!”
    "That's true,” shouted the seventh man, “Why should he get $10 back when I got only $2? The wealthy get all the breaks!”.
    “Wait a minute,” yelled the first four men in unison, “We didn't get anything at all. The system exploits the poor!”
    The nine men surrounded the tenth and beat him up. The next night he didn't show up for dinner, so the nine sat down and ate without him. But when it came time to pay the bill, they discovered, a little late what was very important. They were now Fifty-Two Dollars short of paying the bill. Imagine that!
    And that, boys and girls, journalists, and college instructors, is how the tax system works. The people who pay the highest taxes get the most benefit from a tax reduction. Tax them too much, attack them for being wealthy, and they just may not show up at the table anymore. In fact, they might start eating overseas where the atmosphere is somewhat friendlier.

I’m sick and tired of my car windows smashed or batteries stolen and reporting is just a waste of time. 4. There seems to be no accountability for crimes as the same people are simply put back on the streets without bail or consequences, so what would you expect?

    400,000 square feet is not cheap to maintain. That's a multi level piece of property. The cost to operate increases year after year. If the income through sales can't cover the cost to operate it's a no brainer decision. The folks on the street with their mental issues are not the problem, they are not dictating the rent nor the property taxes and other taxes retailers have to pay the city. At the same time it seems SF doesn't seem too bothered for the loss of tax revenue.

    • @ronbennett7885

      400,000 is gigantic. Most traditional full-line department stores are 150,000-250,000. Not surprising it's closing. They hung on longer than many would have expected.
