So far, the best I have ever had. Grab some tarts, find a good coffee shop. What a treat
Let’s say it’s been almost 20 years for me since I have had some. I am glad grandma looks like she is in great spirits and health. Must say that they are an unforgettable treat.
its not just the egg tarts. They have delicious mooncakes, too, during the Mid-Autumn festival. Those mooncakes were the best i'd have ever had.
Wow, the custard is so bright 🌞
I love this story. Thanks for sharing this!
My mum is from HK and I’m born and raised in Vancouver. I can honestly say, Golden Gate bakery has some of the best Dan tat outside of Hong Kong and Vancouver. Unfortunately, I don’t see myself visiting SF anytime soon.
Any specific shops in HK you would recommend? :)
They have the best egg tart. My grandpa from HK has eaten all over Asian and he agreed that was the best he ever had, that says A LOT.
So good!
Yeah- it wasn’t always like this. I remember going in there for years before the pandemic. 😕
? lmao what do you mean? She was always closed on random hours and even gone for weeks for holidays/vacations
I been there many times for over 35 years. I lived North Beach .little Italy 🇮🇹 she’s so so nice Lady . Nice people .the food Hunan food Chinese the best ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ please visit San Francisco ❤️
Garden Bakery, around the corner on Jackson Street, also has great Daan Tat.
I haven't visited this bakery for years, but it definitely carries childhood memories I had. Egg tarts is one of my favorite there, but there's also other good stuff too. Even before food influencers back in the day, there's always long lines because it was that popular.
Influencers are nothing but a joke. Many famous grandma grandpa business got their fame because of their hardworking and good faith spirits. The government wouldn't do anything help them but tax them. At least in the old days, the government and city officials kept the streets and society safe. Look what the SF leaders and officials have done and destroyed the whole city. Both NY and Chicago fell into the same category.
Enjoy the delicious "egg tarts" while they last. Next time I travel to SF, I hope I would find this place open and wait in line.
Holy cows!!!!! Back in the days, their egg custards were ONLY $.75 per egg custard.
Inflation is a bitch!
to be fair back in your day was the 90's?

Childhood memories👍🏻👍🏻
The best Hong Kong/Macau version of Egg Tart. Expensive but delicious.
I haven't been to SF Chinatown in a long time, but every time we visited, there was always a long line. One day, my fiancé and I were lucky enough to try their egg tarts. We noticed there were no lines at that moment, although there had been one earlier in the day. My biggest regret that day was not buying a dozen of them; I think we only got half a dozen or maybe even less. I'm not Chinese, so I didn't like egg tarts before I tried Golden Gate's. I had only ever had them at dim sum restaurants and did not enjoy them. Golden Gate Bakery changed my mind, and every time I'm headed near SF, I always want to go get them. I literally fantasize about them LOL.
I really hope someone young kind passionate as the owners and employees,to take over & keep golden gate bakery open…i love this place,i remember once a time when they don’t just make egg tarts they also baked fresh raisin bread moon cake sweet rice treats thing, wife cake i miss it !
Barnone, best egg tarts I ever had in my life.
Worth the wait!❤😊
She does that so that her business will not get robbed
They've always had erratic hours.
They don't sell anything else. What is there to steal?
@@chinatownboy7482 , heller... money, maybe cash register, equipment..you have not heard of break ins in SF or Oakland...
@@chinatownboy7482 money...seriously???
@@moejoe1863seriously, the burglars who have been plaguing the city have caused so much trouble and she got scared to open up like before the pandemic.
It sure looks like a yummy treat ! ❤
Get it when you can! I never know when they’re open!
This is very very very good one . Must try
SF small biz owners can learn from this shop. Board up your front, put up steel bars, never show business hours, and you will have a line out the door! I'm sure the product quality is worth it.
Best egg tart I’ve ever had in the U.S. wished we had something as good in Houston
It's true, they are super yummy!!!
Is there still a store in SF?? It hasn’t been robbed and looted out of business?..
Cash Only
Mr Bread on Taravel in the Sunset District also have great egg tarts. Their Portuguese style is even better.
I thought for sure we'd get some on the food tour in Hong Kong but no. I was so sad. I really missed out!
I used to work around that area. I was tipped off about an alert you can sign up for whenever the bakery opens. I got lucky a few times and caught a few short lines. The Daan Tat is worth.
I tried it before and I don't remember it being a huge standout over others. But part of the reason people rave about them is because they sell them so quickly that you well get them fresh and warm instead of ones that have been sitting for a while vs someolace else where they may have been sitting for a while.
There is a place where I live that sells chinese bbq pork that is considered the best around. They sell a lot and it's fresh because of the quick turnover. It tastes grest fresh, but once it has been sitting a while and cools off it just tastes like your average bbq pork.
Sure recipe plays a part but so does freshly cooked and not sitting.
I love chinese bakery items and they used to be so affordable but not anymore.😣
I went by this place before the pandemic and yeah, it looked like it was closed. I don’t really go into Chinatown anymore because I try avoiding the congestion of getting there. I have tried some of these egg tarts in the Inner Richmond area, like from Pineapple King bakery and Sheng Kee.
Hard working people!!!
Whenever I visit SF, I would stop by Golden Gate Bakery to get their egg tarts, and I would buy 1 or 2 dozens. However, for the last few years their open hours have not been consistent. There is actually a Facebook page and a website that tell you if they are open for the day. My sister ended up making egg tarts on her own, and she perfected it, making what I think is even better than this bakery.
She should sell her egg tarts! How much longer will Virginia be able to run the business? 👍🏽
@@WingChunBoyz Yeah, she probably should try, at least starting out as a side thing and see where it goes.
San Francisco muss man überleben!!😊
I know!! They're Good.I've been there 😂😊so many times before. When my uncle & Aunt used to lived on mission Street.
Their egg tarts used to be the best. After they became famous, raised their prices, and tried to increase production, the quality dropped. The egg custard is still similar but the crust changed. It was the crust that originally made them stand out. You don't get that flaky crunch anymore. Instead it is a thick pie crust. I stopped going to Golden Gate Bakery ever since they changed the crust. My go-to spot for egg tarts now is Mr. Bread on Taraval.
Mr. Bread is great! I really like their Portuguese tarts.
Whenever I am in Sunset area, I go to Mr. Bread. You should try their curry beef bun.
I consider their curry beef bun is the best in the city!
That crust was 100% lard. That’s what made it so good and flaky 🐖 🐖
Their egg tart is really soso, the outer layer is not layered at all. Tried once their mooncakes, a complete disaster 😂
GGB tarts are totally overrated and overpriced.
I tried it before, it was good

She knows how to Stand on her lil feet of Business😊
Last time I went on a regular day it was closed. I drove from LA. 😢
She's so smart. Why make it look nice when politicians aren't keeping business owners safe? That egg tart looks good as hell.
Like their egg tarts a lot. We used to have a co-worker who lives near SF Chinatown, and he will take our order to bring to us in Santa Clara. Those are the wonderful memories. I also visit them whenever I'm in SF, but only rarely they are open. Hope next time they're open when I'm in SF.
Can I piggyback when your coworker gets to bring down to Santa Clara?
I can take at least couple boxes
❤yum
I like the honest statement of the old lady. The breaking of the windows and door will cost more to fix than the possible goods that the looters could ransack.
Looks like a friendly, welcoming place you'd want to bring your kids! The plywood and bars provide an incredible atmosphere!
😂
I had them once before, but my local Kee Wah bakery is really good, too. And I don't have to drive 60+ min, look for expensive parking, and walk on steep hills to get them. I miss getting egg tarts in Manhattan, where the streets are flat! 😂
Man been so long that I’ve been to Chinatown i have forgotten about it because of the sporadic hours nowadays.
Yea I can’t deal.
Holy cow, $3.75 for ONE dan tat? Sticker shock.
F that! Get a in n out burger
Did I just see $3.75/ each? I remember them being like $1.50-1.75 each 😮
East Bay regular egg tart is $2.5 to $3. But, golden gate does worth it.
Do they still have the coffee crunch cake?
Got to love it when geniuses make comments as to why someone would break into the business or what is there to steal. Some even comment that is what insurance is for. This is one of the reasons why most insurance companies have stopped offering business insurance in California.
It’s a best egg custard in town Sf golden gate bakery 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌹
yea they are so good, almost best in the world, or best in US at least
Top 2 egg tarts in the bay!
After this segment now the lines will be even longer
Love the highlight! This brings a lot of childhood memories, my family will drive from Sac monthly to stock up on our Chinatown goodies and we always stop by Golden Gate. Decades ago even there were long lines, with abundant variety of baked goods. Now as an adult it’s been years since I gone because of the erratic hours. But I understand why, many of the OG bakers are getting old or retired, it’s a lot of work, so I’m sure it’s hard to keep consistent hours. Plus finally taking time off to spend with family. Do they sell anything else besides the dan tats? I know during Moon Festival they will have moon cakes, but do they still sell other classic HK baked goods anymore?
They have coconut tarts!
I used to love their beef curry puffs.
agreed! the dan taats are💣!
wow $3.75 for 1 now. The last time I had it was in 2018 when visited family and I believe they were $2.50
Really good egg tarts but they often have long line or are closed for vacation.
“Not too sweet” 😂👌🏼
The best things in life don’t come easy and this is the same life lesson 😂. It’s the reason why we never go just for that, we always try our luck when we’re in the area. But we either get a treat or we get to save some calories so no matter the outcome it’s a positive one.
This store always closes for vacation 😮
How do these compare to Oakland Chinatown dan tat?
Edit: whoaaaa, $3.75 each is crazy expensive!! I think it’s like $1.90 at other places. Is it that much better??
Need to try it sometime, and then compare to Hong Kong and Macau when we are there in June!
SF Chinatown use to have these kiosks lined along the sidewalk with cabinets along the buildings. No more because of theft.
Yes, it’s just like buying a Mark Six lottery~是的,簡直就像買六合彩一樣~
I was there. The cake is just ok.
I love to eat egg tarts 👉🟡🔆
Now a certain group will break the glass door to get in. Loved their egg custard tarts.
first know about egg custard tarts when at the same time also first knowing about dim sum because usually most dim sum restaurant serve egg custard tarts.
Do they have anything else besides dan tat?? Used to go there as a kid with my mom in the 80s and 90s for pineapple and cocktail buns and they were the best! And dan tats were 50¢!
Coconut tart
Macaroons
Moon cakes (white lotus seed paste, mixed nuts with ham, almond, wintermelon, coconut and nuts, black bean paste, pineapple, date, taro) when it's in season
like their egg tarts but not worth the wait, the cost per tart and mysterious operation hours. $3.75 per tart, no wonder they kept on vacationing.
$3.75 for an egg tart? There are better ones at other Chinese bakeries that are cheaper. I've tried the Golden Gate Bakery before, and their egg tart is okay. Even before the pandemic, their hours were strange, as I used to work in the financial district.
And this is why I am glad I travel back and forth to Malaysia and Singapore...there you will find "the" best eat tarts short of Macau where the best in the world is located at
what 3.75 for an egg tart now?
I bought their egg tarts more than 10 years ago, and I never went back.
They are overpriced!
I can find decent egg tarts for better prices elsewhere!!!
Only for people don’t know that food will pay that prices. $3.75 hellllll Noooo. I try that not worth that price and taste just okay.
likewise
+1
I've visited SF twice, usually for around a week each and they were never open during my trips. One day!!
There is also another spot out in the sunset that’s also beyond amazing. If you know you know.
The best in SF, or maybe the best in USA!
Beautiful bakery, but sad to hear the owner say "We board up the entrance to prevent break-ins"....it's sad the city failed her.
best egg tart on grant, best siu mai on stockton @ good mong kok bakery
nearly $4 a piece and $45 a dozen! i love egg tarts and i've had theirs but it's not worth that price.
The history of these egg tarts is the Portuguese brought the egg tarts to China, specifically, Macau when it was u dear Portuguese rule. I love both the Chinese and Portuguese versions
The real Portuguese Pasteis de Nata has a subtle difference from the Macau egg tarts sold in Macau or HK or anywhere else. But we cannot always fly to Portugal to eat the real deal, so the local baker can satisfy that craving😊
No can’t beat the egg tarts(pasteis de nata) I had at Portugal, hands down the best
Portugal egg tarts are the best!!! I like mine a little charred.
Might be too sweet for Chinese taste buds.
Place is good but i haven't been there yet since the reopened. I don't think they're the best and worth paying almost $4 for 1. Napoleon or now Stockton Bakery on Stockton and Jackson is VERY good and they almost always come out piping hot!!
It didn’t have the plywood covering the windows when I was there 7 years ago. I wonder what changed in the last few years to make them have to do this….
crimes...sad!
had better one at Wing Lee Bakery & Golden Chariot Bakery & Restaurant
do they make pineapple bun too
Why you gotta make their lines longer?
I thought they closed permanently since pandemic
i knew this bakery and i hate the way the owner conduct in business: no respect for their customers ( no signs of times operations or closeness). I never came back ,my life is fine without theirs good.
SF need to do the right things and help local businesses stay open!
Got that product!!!
Cash only, no IRS
Normal in australia
Honestly, Golden Gate Bakery egg tart was good 20 years ago. Any dim sum place in San Gabriel Valley with flaky crust would beat Golden Gate egg tart any day.
I’m from 626, I’m curious to what the hype is about but gotta admit, I can get some good egg tarts from a local dim sum restaurant or Chinese bakery.
Too expensive, I rather go to Napoleon Bakery in Oakland.
This place is never open when I visit
$3.75 each?? Goddamn son
I’m too broke to afford that.
@$3.75 per tart, no wonder they open whenever. 😂
There are more other bakery you can grab from just as good.
Lol they sell out fast
The empress restaurant steels your credit card information!!!!
The Empress of China restaurant has been shuttered since 2015.
is there some sort of weird AI background fuzzy filter thing going on here? unnerving.
These days, you have to look at SF through a filter...
It's shot using an iPhone; pretty much all the station's MMJ reports nowadays are shot on iPhone
@@RexPobletethanks! so it's more an apple thing. sadly my own iphone is old and i guess doesn't have those features lol
