  • Apple has done something they rarely do, they dropped the price of the 14 inch MacBook Pro by $400 and it now sits at a more attractive $1599 price point which is going to attract a much larger customer base, however Apple isn't doing this out of the goodness of their hearts, there's some cuts to this new base model MacBook Pro that you need to know about.

Well the baseline 14” M3 MBP is the replacement to the 13” M2 MBP. The 13” M2 MBP with comparable specs was US$1,499 (8C CPU; 10C GPU; 8GB memory and 512GB storage). So just $100 more for a larger mini-LED display; 1000 nits; ProMotion; better speakers; full height function keys; SD card slot; HDMI…

I'd like to see yeah, 12 GB ram and 1TB SSD entry for most computers from Apple. Keep in mind $2000 for a laptop with this kind of display, build and power isn't terrible. I think lots of people like to compare to Windows laptops and there isn't anything that really comes close to the new Macbooks for the price. Generally people on the windows side want to compare specs, numbers, like ram and storage, and even just the GPU and CPU and not other things.

Having a pricing scheme where you are always just slightly tempted to go for the upgraded model.
There is no "killer value" model and there will never be.
The only mac in the past years where they almost provided a "killer value" was the M1 MacBook Air (probably also consciously to get the Apple M MacBooks on the market) and they are still suffering that.
It was just too good for its price and the upgrade to the 13 inch MacBook Pro and M2 MacBook Air just wasn't worth it and this was also obvious to most customers.

The question you need to ask yourself is “What features are most important to me?”. Screen size? Performance for photo and video editing, graphics design and/or coding? (The performance of Pro and Max chips will only benefit these kinds of usage, especially where time is money.). If you’re only using a Mac for general computing (ie. Web browsing, email, spreadsheets and word processing, etc.), then the M3 base model or even a MacBook Air or M3 iMac should be plenty of computer unless you want to plug in more then one external monitor. All of the base model Macs have plenty of RAM and storage options for everyday usage. I suggest starting with the screen size you want to carry around and configure from there.
My only criticism with this fine video of Greg’s is that Apple didn’t really lower the price of the base model MacBook Pro because they only offered the 14” or 16” MBPs with Pro and Max chips starting at $1,899 and they eliminated the 13” M2 MBP, which started at $1,299. So, essentially, the cheapest MBP went up $300 to $1,599, but you get double the storage and a larger and much higher quality display. Worth the increase for sure!

These specs are nice and if I was in the market today instead of 3 months ago, it is hard to say if I would go for the base M3 or not. A better screen and better speakers (MBA's are "ehh") might well have enticed me. Overall I'm happy with my M2 MBA and probably will wait for an M3 Pro Mac Mini just to have something on my desk with more power.

I have the base model M2 Air, and 8GB of RAM actually goes really far on Apple Silicon, it's a really great travel laptop that i can use for things like web browsing and light coding without issue.
However, if you've decided 8GB is enough RAM, just get the M2 Air (or even the M1 Air!), and if you need more RAM, may as well go up to the Pro chip!

I have an 8 gig M1 MBA and frankly, I’m surprised how badly it bottlenecks. I would have expected the low amount of RAM to have an impact on performance (as in, long-running tasks take longer to run), but at a certain point it just starts stuttering and becomes very unresponsive (for instance there’s a huge delay when switching between workspaces).
At the same time, paying $200 for 8 GB of RAM feels like a ripoff. :/

    • @dubble
      @dubble 11 месяцев назад +6

8gb is *really* light coding with absolutely nothing running in the background. Honestly, any decent IDE really swallows 4gb+ of ram for mid-sized projects.
I tried to make do with 16gb for hobby projects and quickly realised that I was already at 100% ram usage before even compiling. My idle usage typically sits around 24gb with spikes to 32gb after I upgraded to 32 gb. At my 64gb station I regularly use up more than 40gb.
A MacBook "Pro" shipping with any less than 32gb is a complete joke.

    • @johnmckay1961

@@dubble You’d be surprised, is absolutely fine for any web dev I’ve done and even compile both XCode and Android Studio projects (I have a beefier machine in the house I use for proper work but I’ve been really impressed with the Air when travelling)
The more ram you have the more your machine will use, so I think it can be a bit misleading regarding how much you need
Agree though, you can’t sell a machine with 8GB ram and call it “Pro” in 2023!

I just purchased the 15" MBA (16GB/512GB) config yesterday at Best Buy for $1500. The reason I wasn't too impressed with the MBP M3 was my particular use case is the laptop will be connected to my monitor 70% of the time and only used as a laptop 30% of the time. The $200 price difference was hard to justify when I wouldn't be pushing the device to its limits anyway. Still exciting to see and it certainly is going to vary person-by-person which laptop is best for them

I am currently using a 12" MacBook from early 2016, which is unfortunately no longer supported with major software releases. So I'm stuck on Monterey. It's on its last leg at this point since I've been using it each and every day for the past seven years. Battery capacity is practically gone, processing speed is very bad and it only has 8gb of ram. I plan to upgrade to the baseline M3 with no modifications. I don't do intensive tasks all the much since this is just my personal computer for work whilst I have a separate dedicated gaming windows laptop. Storage hasn't been an issue on my MacBook and I only ever really have 2/3 apps open at once. 5.53gb of memory was used as of typing this.
I don't know how 8gb would run on an Apple silicon chip. Since I've never used a laptop with one before. Again, I rarely do intensive things like rendering. I would bump it up to 16gb for $200 more (I do have a $100 voucher). Then again, that does bring the price closer to the M3 Pro chip model that starts with 18gb of unified memory. But I don't want to spend more for a faster chip with speeds I do not particularly need, including it compromises battery life on the 14" model. Nor do I desire a bigger laptop like the 16" as it is both heavier and more expensive, of course.
Mentally, I am not adamant on upgrading ASAP but I don't particularly desire to wait for the new MacBook Air either. So if anyone is willing to share their views on this, I would appreciate it.

What I am wondering is how dynamic caching will affect overall memory footprint. If you're not doing heavy graphics, then 8Gb might be feasible. Even with light gaming you might be able to let dynamic caching cover your slightly expanded memory footprint. This lineup is targeted at getting M and Intel users leapfrogged tyo the M3. This is why they really did not look at comparisons with the M2. I am actually holding for the Macbook Air or the iPad Air to get the M3. sometime next year I think.

It is confusing but this entry model is aimed more at corporate business who want the Pro name. It's still got the gorgeous screen, ProMotion and the 6 speaker system. Global Radio Group gives MacBook Pro's to its Account Managers, so this model is ideal. I have the M2Pro 14" with 1TB and 16GB of RAM. I love it but at the moment I use it for 1. Keeping my movies on 2. Safari browsing and 3. Apple Pages / Keynote. The Air isn't worth the money when you add a larger SSD option so the Pro is worth it just for the ProMotion Display and speakers etc. This is a lovely laptop for a student going to University for three+ years etc. Apple Silicon is beautiful though and I don't feel the 8GB of RAM is limiting with this architecture for the consumer that it's aimed at!

I think Apple missed a marketing/naming opportunity here
The baseline M3 “Macbook Pro”, with its single external display support and 8GB of RAM had the opportunity to be called just the “Macbook”. This would have saved it a lot of criticism as to it being called a “Pro” while keeping the M3 Pro and Max as the actual Pro models
It would have helped differentiate it from the Air as well, which would continue to be the thinner, lighter, budget friendly model
It gives a clear direction for the lineup as the Macbook Air, Macbook, and then the Macbook Pro. Only downside to this would be the “Air” name being associated with “budget”… which doesn’t have to be a downside necessarily
