Jokes on you, I constantly play moves that the engine doesn’t see as good
@Jignesh Gupta true engine does not know how to play chess correctly

I'm kind of impressed by MVL's defensive skills. After these alien looking sacrifices by Wesley, he played almost perfectly and found every best idea, but it was still not enough.
Yes it was double Brilliant Ideas...

But his Defence was Amazing...
And obviously kudus to Weasley.. He attack at first place was Undefendable .
I agree but I don’t think the attack was that crazy.

There is very few theory about chess 960 but Nf6 appears very thematic. It put black in such an awful situation....
That goes to show how strong the sac is.
I ran Stockfish 12 for a few hours unattended and it found the move somewhere between depth 41 and depth 52. That's how much it REALLY doesn't want to see this move. Absolutely crazy.
@MorTobXD On my computer latest Stockfish on 32 threads finds the move in 150-500 million nodes (5 to 15 seconds), lc0 with latest T78 net finds it in 300 nodes (instantly).
Hey man, GREAT showing at the tournament. Being so far rated below the others, competing with 2 IMs who are now GMs, and the grind of being a youtube/twitch entrepreneur... all that and still won 1, lost 2*, and drew the rest. I am as proud of you as a stranger could be. Seriously, those games were so fun to watch just knowing who was making the moves.

@@unnamedperson8619 yeah but he never lost against a super GM

When i play chess, the engine doesnt understand a single move. That bishop "sacrifice" 23 moves ago was crucial to getting a past pawn and sacrificing the past pawn for a queen promotion on the other side, winning my game against my 600 rated opponent
That bishop sacrifice was clearly a brilliant move, perhaps even rivaling bobby fischers legendary queen sacrifice.. also its pass pawn btw cuz it means ur pawn has a free pass to the end and isnt opposed by a pawn on their side

The one time Levy can say ‘computers don’t understand chess’ and the one episode he doesn’t say it
But he basically said it
I wish we could get an openings video occasionally like the ones he used to do.
He could plug his courses after an opening video if he wants to as well.
It could hook him some customers who want a more of a deeper dive into some lines rather than just a quick overview.
Does a 10 min opening video really accomplish alot though.... theres books with 1500 variations for 1c4. Theres alot of better ways to make educational content. But tbh levy is more for entertainment, his training games have been the most instructive videos he has put out.

YO I ran all the moves from the knight sac on to the queen trade through my Stockfish 14 and gave it like 3 minutes in every position. Not only did Wesley attack with only top-engine moves, MVL defended in the most engine-perfect way. Like, even when Levy said that h5 was the most precise defense, Stockfish 14 discards this move after about 30 seconds and suggests bishop takes b5. And MVL found this defense over the board. That is INSANE. And even the continuation, sliding the rook over and trading queens is top engine-level stuff. Unbelievable.
I have a hard enough time learning to play with the pieces in their original position

he could hardly join the candidates.WCC is just too far fetched.
So is world number 6 if I'm not mistaken, if he tries a bit he can reach candidates :)
@@matijabanjan3960 He's reached the Candidates before, but he came 7th out of 8. Still, you never know.
I've thought this myself! He beat Magnus 13.5 to 2.5 in the World Fischer Random Championship - I think if he played him in classical it would be a real war. All about if Wesley could complicate the board enough since he tends to win in those positions more often.
I’m gonna guess this is Wesley So’s Nf6 before the video even loads
Probably, yeah
Funny seeing you around here.
prophet
Left it on a bit longer, stock 14 finds it after about 30 minutes on my pc at depth 31!!
Wesley probably got a bit lucky that the tactics worked. It would be computationally intensive to be confident that the tactics work, so the computer is a pussy and writes the move off
Over the years, I've discovered after an opponent's King side castle, getting that middle pawn protecting the big fella away from that second square was worth many a sacrifice. Credit to So for seeing it in a position and time format that doesn't give the players much time for deep levels of thought. That's why I love Bobby's creation. It brings out the visionaries. On a related note, I was watching this live down the cyber hall at "the club" and Maurice nearly coughed up a hairball after seeing it. LOL
You didn't talk about some engines saying Qh6 was a blunder
When going through analysis in a line after one of my games, one move was shown as giving the best advantage, but having actually played it stockfish concidered it a blunder.

7th day of translating Levy's titles into Neapolitan: "Stu sacrific epic ha rutt Stockfish"
*ruba la corona al re prima di andarsene*
lu cavall ha scassat ù stocco, uagliù!
I tested out the position at 7:10 where the sacrifice was played with a beta version of Stockfish 15. It found Nf6+ in under a second. Just goes to show how much chess engines still need to improve despite being 3600 ELO.
stockfish maybe doesnt see it because with optimal play there is no threat?
When you predict Nf6 when levy asks even though u have no idea why:
Maybe I am a grandmaster
The funny thing is that stockfish not only cant see Nf6, it cant see the following Qh6 neither.
It gives Bc2 as the best follow up with +2 eval but after it sees Qh6 it says +5 eval.
It says Qh6 was a blunder xD
I like that engines still work in 960, because only the setup is different , but all the same rules apply after that
"I like the preposterous like pan to the camera and there's just a knight on f6"

GMs * plays the moves that engines could not understand

I was gonna comment on your Rorschach impression in your previous video (because it was so on point) but boy do I like you Stockfish impressions in that one!! Great energy and vibe in that video!
“so, wesley begins with the move b4”
unintentional but brilliant
However, the new Stockfish 15 finds the move almost instantly
I let Stockfish 12 to mull on that position for quite a while. After 4.5 billion nodes, depth 46/60, it considers Bc2 the best move, at +2.8. At no point did it suggest Nf6.
I then made the Nf6 move and let it analyze that position, and after 1 billion nodes, depth 42/69 , it ended up on +3.8.
Thank you for your CPU time sacrifice, lol. I stopped mine at depth 36 with same result.
I break the Engine on the regular, half the time the Engine is probably having an Aneurysm attack when I play
Can't wait till Levy becomes a grandmaster
Wesley So be making stockfish rethink. I wonder if the engine can even spot it as brilliant.
Once I saw it, Nf6 actually made sense at first sight, because I was used to giving up pieces to try to exploit dark-square weaknesses with Qh6.
That Nf6 reminds me of Byrne - Fischer 1963. You expect the knight to go after material in the form of a rook, but instead it collapses the enemy position. Really beautiful.
Levy a few days ago when a position never seen arose: "Chess is hard."
Levy today: "Here's some stuff where the rules were put in a blender."
Fascinating to see how levy's analysis is on the spot even in another chess variant
I would love to see showcase spotlights of the top 50 active players to get a better sense of the stakes and better engage with the sport.
Stockfish 15 : Sacrificing queen at the 5th move, and somehow win the game at the 34th move.
I played a move that engine tells is a blunder, but on the very next move I checkmated the opponent, and that “blunder” move was necessary.
I feel like the instant I'm out of prep the computer is like ... wtf was that?
grt job levy, pls post recaps of the fide chess olympiad since the format is very confusing and no one does it better than you!! Keep up the gud work, luv your videos
Massive trade occurs, “so material is completely equal”
HOW IS IT ALWAYS COMPLETELY EQUAL IT PISSES ME OFF
Because they wouldn't trade if it wasn't equal
Otherwise it would be a serious blunder and one player would lose the game.
They're super gms for a reason
I do a massive trade and suddenly I am down a rook , 😂😂
You don't enter the trade if it's losing. That's why.
I know of another great example of a sacrifice that Stockfish has a lot of trouble seeing or even understanding, but I can't seem to find the game in which it was played (I know it was Leela as white and she won, but I couldn't find it). It goes as a bishop sacrifice in the Ruy Lopez opening ; the game went 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 Bc5 (i believe this was the pre-arranged position) 4. c3 Bb6 5. d4 exd4 6. cxd4 Nce7 7. O-O c6 (maybe the move order isn't perfectly right, but you get to that position), in which Leela played 8. d5 with the idea to follow 8... cxb5 with 9. d6 and completely paralyze black's position. If anyone remembers that game, I'd be glad if you could share the reference.
Really liked this video Levy!!! It reminded me of some of the older videos you've done about a year ago that really inspired me to start playing chess again.
This should be a youtube series

I actually saw the move in question, figuring that opening up the space after the pawn takes the knight would allow for some kind of tricky mating trap, which is funny because I don't usually see those sorts of plays.
I play quite a lot of moves that engines don't understand, that's how how I roll baby

I wonder if there's ever been a case of the reverse where Stockfish thought a move was super winning but didn't see a counter to it.
7:48 5th of January 2022 here. If you put the position in lichess today it immediately gives Nf6, it shows "cloud depth 36". Some positions are in a database, I suspect, looks like this one made it in.
What is so crazy is that I tested out a beta version of the upcoming Stockfish 15. I ran it locally on my machine, and it found the move legit under a second, with no cloud help!
Fun fact: Wesley So is actually the Fischer Random world champion (also called Chess 960 - or 9LX if you create an unholy union of Roman and Arabic numerals).
He beat Magnus Carlsen in the finals in 2019, making it the only championship Magnus doesn't currently hold.
Levy just don't be too alarmed when someone ned 'John Connor' knocks on your door.
*New video idea for Levy:*
Create three or five games (with players of increasing ranks i.e. 700s, 900s, 1200, 1800s etc...) and put them all in move 20 (or any particular move) of a very famous chess game and see how the players play the position!
I think it would be really interesting to see the comparisons between playstlyes and the development and implementation of certain tactics and ideas of specific ranks. Then when you've recapped the new games, explain how the original game was played and why it was so famous!
I love your content Levy, really enjoying recent videos and going back and watching the old ones (your energy has been off the charts lately). Appreciation and support from the UK 🇬🇧 !
