Seal surge becoming a problem on Cape Cod coast

- Incredible video shows miles of seals resting on the beach of a Cape Cod wildlife refuge. Marine biologists say the seal population in New England is surging, but it is causing side effects for locals. Don Dahler reports from Chatham, Massachusetts.
5 years later: Same problem. Actually, worse.
Ummm hello they live in the water if anything we are in there space.
Apple Candy ...😂 Sharks don't own the ocean you dipshit 😂
@@ethanallen2889 They are better equipped for said environment than humans are so ya they kind of do, it's people who don't own them
their* space
It’s their home . People get over yourselves
Let me guess, you've never even been to the Cape. You have no idea what it's like and the problems it brings.
So pleased that the eco system is finally stabilising.
Not only that we have sharks
Now we have Orcas
Really? You've seen them there? I always wondered why the seal population was growing there despite knowing that Monomoy is protected and offers them shelter from human disturbance but is it only that and fish that brings them there in such great numbers or is there a certain type of food source that is causing this?
GoMiGman well it was actually a sighting during the summer. We haven't really seen another one since
Lucky you! Very cool. Go Pats.
The federal government banned siene nets for menhaden back in 2012 or 15. So with more mendaden =more predatry species, stripers, blues etc, not to mention humpback whales, seals etc etc etc
The sharks will thin out the seal population and the Orcas will take care of the sharks.
Seal populations have rebounded everywhere to the point where they are having enormous impacts on other important animals. The Marine Mammal Act was needed in its day, but that day is long gone, as the MMA has been wildly successful. Now it is time to manage seals like any other game animal. Sell, lottery, or auction off 25 to 50 seal permits a year, and see if five years of hunting them doesn't have an impact on stabilizing their numbers. This situation is a lot like Canada geese, which decades ago had been over hunted; now, they are overabundant pests spreading disease throughout urban and suburban communities. Biologists have to keep their eyes on the biggest purpose.
they wouldn't be a problem naturally if we didn't overfish the oceans to the point of collapse, taking 90+ per cent of the numbers of some species :/
@@harislittle9241 I agree with you to a point. No question that humans, particularly the Chinese, are exploiting the oceans beyond carrying capacity. However, The American Indians hunted seals aggressively, without hurting their populations. I’m confident we can have limited harvests.
You can't hunt seals in the age of social media. They're too cute.
I would love to pet every single one.
and every single seal will bite the heck out of your hand if you try to touch them. This ain't a cartoon, these are wild animals. And seals are notoriously nasty on dry land. In the water they can be curious and pushy.
Seal problem, or shark problem, maybe a liberal problem....
Russian bot
@stephen7072 Do you got and stats to back that up? Otherwise you’re just fear mongering
This is great . The ocean is healthy again ....thank god God the government stopped the fisherman from stripping the ocean bare...I wanna go into a cage to see a great white.
Oh well the seals need a place to go and we can't "own" everything. Stay out of the ocean.
when did seals arrive near chatham?
Over protection
They aren't sending their best seals
is it very safe to swim close to the shoreline there in the bay near the lighthouse now?
Sunnie Emerson be mindful. White sharks can swim in waist deep water. Don’t swim if seals are in the water or nearby
Short answer: NO!!!
This report is five (5) years old. Things have gotten a lot worse. I’m not advocating for killing seals or sharks. However, we need to aware of just how dangerous the ocean has gotten in this area. I wouldn’t swim anywhere near a seal population.
The reason for Great Whites on the cape.
Bingo!!
We don't hear Australia complaining about Great whites
Good for them, we need to keep it illegal to hunt them, they deserve to be here! Sharks live here too
What about the human surge
3 years later it’s getting worse
time for a seal season

DAMN
So if the seals are eating all the fish, as well as attracting sharks, which makes swimming highly dangerous, then swim well away from them. It is their ocean, and if they are concentrating on the seals it must be safer to go elsewhere.
haha this is funny i just say this i was searchin it up while watching it lol
To bad it’s their home fish elsewhere! People are mean and selfish. This is their home. We over fish and steal their food! To bad for the fishermen but either fish else or find a new Job!
We always had the Problem But nobody wants to do anything about it More ceos more Great whites
It's There ocean there fish
their
Eventually will be R.I. if they keep releasing several of them annually to please the pink whale shirted flip-flop group.
