Well spoken for a 22 year old. Articulates his thoughts well. Try and find a 22 year old pop star these days and try conversing with them and you can literally see smoke come out of their ears as they strain to compose a thought.
In his UK interviews he was so much more relaxed, you could tell he was nervous and felt judged in America. But George is George and did amazing and was just as kind and sweet as ever ❤
My friend Howie was a Lighting Director at NBC and I was there with him for the day, and he took me and stuck me in a seat for this show. I remember the going back and forth with the Boy and the audience, but my best memory was the warm-up with the band, doing the Booker T number "Green Onions". They had Steve Kahn playing the guitar that day instead of Hiram Bullock.
Um, Europe, Australia and Japan had plenty of "socially backwards" people back then. Quit being an ignorant putz and generalizing an entire country like that.
love this,George is adorable here , love how nice David Letterman treated him so warmly. ! Boy do I remember falling hard for George. He's beautiful and handsome all at the same time. He always has just looked so loveable.
He kept himself calm and gentle all through the program.cause he knew.who he was and what he wanted. The media wanted to speculate about his personal life but didn't succeed.
After watching a couple of these old interviews, I see what it is that made him so different. Not just his looks and his clothes! He just doesn't belong in that time! He belongs here, in our time! If you look at recent interviews, you see that nothing changed about him. He's a little bit older but exactly the same person. But that person fits way better in 2017 than the 80's.
Bullshit. If someone dressed now as eccentric as he did then, they'd still get bothered and asked questions about it. 2017/18, for the most part, sucks and is uninspiring. The 80s were perfect for BG and his sound.
His gender identity would be more excepted now, but his style and individuality was much more suited for the 80s. Boy is too unique and original for today.
Actually Boy George fitted very well in the 1980’s. Fashion was very extravagant and flamboyant which is probably why he was accepted so well even though being gay was still taboo back then. If he was a gay man who dressed normally there may have been more prejudice.
It is what he wanted it was still about him he came out looking like that it would be the same in 2018 it was off the chain and he will always be remembered for it and his great voice his point was he knows he has a great voice and he can dress like a freak or jerk and still be respected because his work is top notch and that all that anyone cares about at the end of the day it what you do and not so much what you look like it a very good message and everyone that criticize him for it doesn’t get it and pretty much exposed who they were up front to him and he didn’t have to try and figure them out
I am just seeing this video because I got caught up in his new "bare" video that he did so I thought I would reminisce about him and Culture Club from back in the day. I have to disagree with your comment that the whole interview was about what he looked like. Letterman asked about the "culture" of his music and his influences along with many other questions. I think it was a very good interview. And George was so well spoken and gentle. Such a great man.
Star tracker ....star there is nothing wrong by asking about the way he dress and look. This was back inthe 80s and if you was different or dress different than others, then people will ask why this, why that. I think it was a nice interview and boy b answer all questions with no shame......great artist who wanted to be known specially in america in his early days as an artist. When you go on a talk show you have an interview first. They ask you what you can answer and what you cant.....and you sign papers for that.
+Beercamp Slave I don't know about you, but I was around back in 1983 when this aired. Americans back then were, for the most part, not nearly as uptight & "homophobic" as you suggest. Sure, there wld've been a few, as there are a few now. But the difference between now & then is not so big. Little Richard was a big star in the 50s, & he basically did himself up like a woman. The biggest difference between now and then is that a higher percentage of kids openly identify as "bi". The actual numbers of people who have homosexual trysts or more is probably up slightly, but not much. It is just more trumpeted from the rooftops. Human sexuality is essentially the same.
@Shamila_ hmm, to ignorantly generalize an entire nation like that, you really need to get off your lazy behind and travel more. America has produced some of the best comedy ever.
+John Wilkerson He's not wearing a dress or anything. Yes he's wearing makeup, which is stupid I think. Also this "boy" is on a show promoting the worst song of all time. I agree! A saw a modern BG interview where he said he saw an old interview of himself and said "what are you going on about?" Lol. I understand hes older and wiser now BUT hes gotta credit he said some pretty wise things then too.
God this audience. Pathetic. Laughing like he's some kind of joke or sideshow instead of the incredible talented musician and artist he is. Yes he looked unusual for the time, but what a legend and groundbreaking person.
I didn't think it was THAT bad lol but he got defensive and lost them, shame cuz his message was PERFECT. THIS is why Prince didn't do these interviews though. At a concert - it's YOUR audience, here it's jerks with free tickets.
@@DJRitty I'd get defensive too. Dave is somewhat mocking and the audience is so awkward. I get it, it's 1983 and they really don't know how to react. Thinking back, so many movies and TV shows, the killer is a man dressed as a woman etc etc. Transgender people have been villified so much over the years. But anyway yes George did a great job here rising above it. And as a person who went to Letterman twice, you didn't know who would be there until you got there so sure it's not like any fans tried to be there. Jerks with free tickets is spot on.
@@DJRitty Now I'm watching a Donohue interview from 1984 with an audience full of people with different attitudes since Culture Club was a big success by then. Even still, people get so hung up on his appearance and judge. He brought up...We've had Alice Cooper, Liberace, etc...why so weird for him? Then that got me thinking about Kiss, David Bowie, etc.....why such a big deal how somebody looks? And there's still so much appearance judging today...so damn sad.
@@DanK123 Agreed. Siskel & Ebert have a good if older special called 'homosexuality in the movies' it's still worth viewing. They talk about many thing, including love stories and stereotypes etc and that's the late 70's! I wonder if Dave (and I think he came off here fine - he can tone down his mocking when he needs too but it also isn't a serious interview show, this is a comedy show lol) brining up the hotel thing or whatever George was pissed at (outside of the show) made him a little off edge inside? Aside from the yahoos it was a good interview. Who knows how much drugs George was on here too (if any at the moment but he was going to head downwards eventually). So glad he came back with crying game, that saved him and was such a good track. I'm was SHOCKED he didn't get his music career back when that blew up. Cheers.
@@DJRitty Ah will try to look up the Siskel and Ebert thing. Yeah that hit me not long ago...why are LGTQ people so villified? So much is from horrible film/TV portrayals in villain/killer roles. Yeah maybe Dave wasn't that bad and it's his job to crack jokes...but George can't help but be a little irked when people seem to laugh at him. You're right about Crying Game...I almost forgot about it. Shame...so much more he could've continued to add to the pop music world after that!

David looked so uncomfortable(as well as the audience) esspecially at 9:15. It's very sad actually. George was very kind and polite (as any person would be) and in return all he got were awkward questions about his appearance and mocking laughs from the audience. I'm glad the world has changed
Boy george is really talented .. Love the way he sing his song ... And he is actually handsome guy .. Only the way his dress and his face really look like a cute girl but he is with his best talent .. Love him.. 👍👍👍
During the 80s, I only know Boy George as individual singer, I not even knew that he has a band called Culture Club. Even in Asia like HK and Singapore, ppl mostly knew him as Boy George.
I first got to know him as Boy George the lead singer of Culture Club. My very first poster of him I put up on my bedroom wall was Culture Club. 4 people, Roy, George, Mikey and Jon. I'm from Singapore.
Boy George is such an interesting speaker he never runs out of enthusiasm he has proved to many (not that he needed to ) he’s a winner . And he has a powerful presence .
Letterman gets credit for resisting the temptation to make George the butt of his jokes (it would’ve backfired anyway, George would’ve handled him lol). But for 1983 certainly letterman gets props for taking George seriously. His questions were genuine curiosity and how can one learn if they don’t inquire? I remember loving George’s audacity and courage. And he could certainly sing.
I watched this video saying to myself, “this guy has to be a Gemini, this guy has to be a Gemini.” Wiki’d him and sure enough, Gemini. Loved this dude back in the day…I mean in a very hetero way. Great songs from CC that still resonate quite strongly, even today. Love you, dude. Hope all is well. Cheers from Texas.
I never laughed when I first saw the artist behind the song, I gasped, What on earth??? But he's so smart that I had to follow him to try to understand where he was coming from. Once you've seen him, you'll never forget him, that's for sure.
I am from the CC era. I never questioned his appearance, but he stood out. Looking back I feel his outfits are underestimated, they are beautiful and stylish. His unique style is unmatched. It's hard to believe he's only 22 here, as he is so mature and way ahead of his time.

He seems so shy, but surely he wasn't. What talent he still has.
His body language along with the comment "My parents don't laugh at people in a studio" Brilliant!
He had parents who loved him and accepted who he was
I fell in love with his personality. I like his unique style, gentle persona, charm and humor. I also find him very wise. Boy George is my first love in any of the celebrities I admire. I remember wanting to go to London and marry him in my teen years lol! I love all the Culture Club songs and know it by heart 💕🎶
We are same ,I felt in love with him when I first watch his karma chameleon culture club, and since then I downloaded all his song and concert ,,I love him sooo much 😍😍😘😘✌✌✌
@John Wickes ah I thought his growing up in UK , I dont remember sorry✌
Rachel, I am curious.....and who did you married too? Children?
@@agustindejesus7398 I have one and single
By the end of this interview David realized he had said a few “funny things” but it was nice of him to make sure Boy George wasn’t upset.
Boy George is pure talent!!!
👏🏻😉
Well spoken for a 22 year old. Articulates his thoughts well. Try and find a 22 year old pop star these days and try conversing with them and you can literally see smoke come out of their ears as they strain to compose a thought.
Yeah a well spoken , classy 22 year old Boy George as oppossed to someone today at 22 who acts like a 14 year old.
@@davegeisler7802 Most adults act like children nowadays
In his UK interviews he was so much more relaxed, you could tell he was nervous and felt judged in America. But George is George and did amazing and was just as kind and sweet as ever ❤
I've loved him since I was 15 and I'm 51 now... He's so honest and true.
Ugh! You were an 80s teen? So lucky. Growing up with CC sounded fun
Have you seen him lately he's in Las Vegas.
@@suziecue3027
No... But I keep track of him. I'll always love Bit George! 🤗 🥰
@@lessismore8533
The best time of my life!
I really like him. He is humble and is not vulgar.
Georgie we love ya, even almost 40 years later. 😉😉
Mack, back them I heard that he was hanging out at the bars in the village. At bet he did love it....a lot different than the bars in England.
22 yrs old !!! What a personalty !!
My friend Howie was a Lighting Director at NBC and I was there with him for the day, and he took me and stuck me in a seat for this show. I remember the going back and forth with the Boy and the audience, but my best memory was the warm-up with the band, doing the Booker T number "Green Onions". They had Steve Kahn playing the guitar that day instead of Hiram Bullock.
loved him telling the audience off
Um, Europe, Australia and Japan had plenty of "socially backwards" people back then. Quit being an ignorant putz and generalizing an entire country like that.
Mom
That shut them right up. Good!
Skye Parkinson 😂🤣
More like that one guy who laughed. LOL
love this,George is adorable here , love how nice David Letterman treated him so warmly. ! Boy do I remember falling hard for George. He's beautiful and handsome all at the same time. He always has just looked so loveable.
He is the absolute cutest
I love you George
TigerLily every decade has a cutie. This is the 80s one....well one of them Jon Moss was another one
Maria Dababneh And Pete Burns
I’ve never found anyone who said that about Dave before
Who? Letterman? 🤔
Wow, for 22 years old is quite smart. I am impressed.
Boy George looks lovely here and he definitely suits the makeup.
And better role model than Justin Bieber at the same age.
Indy Indy .....indy no doubt about it.
Actually Boy George fitted very well in the 1980’s. Fashion was very extravagant and flamboyant which is probably why he was accepted so well even though being gay was still taboo back then. If he was a gay man who dressed normally there may have been more prejudice.
Life and people were different back in the 80's. The music was really good. That's all that counts really.
I grew up in the 80's in the UK. Never thought twice about his image, just that his music was good. That's all that matters.
Wow you were an 80s teen? I’m from the US but I’m a 90s baby
Good for him, stood his ground despite the ignorance in the audience.
I was watching Boy George on the Phil Donahue show the other night...I just ❤ him...I'm glad Culture Club is still around..
He reminds me of my elementary school student~♡
When i listen to his songs, i am so happy~
He is such a beauty,, and humble at the same time.. I am in love with him
The whole interview was about the way he looked. He had to justify himself the entire time. Quite sad really.
Dude chill this was fuckin 1983... even now it's weird to see a guy dress like that
@@robindaugin7639 both are great
Boy George really looked very cute and beautiful when he was young and he got a great voice!
his laugh is so cute
Ikr
Boy George talking about antiwar and anti racism? Love a progressive icon!
Boy George is a Legend! I’ve always loved his music , his aesthetic and his kind and personable personality ! He is one of a kind!
People were really uptight back then....the audience seems so uncomfortable.
Americans lack of humor! lol
BeerCamp, you're just another ignorant, anti-US schmuck. YOU'RE the "idiot" here.
+John Wilkerson He's not wearing a dress or anything. Yes he's wearing makeup, which is stupid I think. Also this "boy" is on a show promoting the worst song of all time. I d be working out and I've had to hear I'll tumble for ya 1000 times and I just almost thought about murder. That song will really drive a person NUTS.
I had a Big poster with him from my brother God Rest his Soul!! while I was in the HighSchool in Romania back in Communism!!! Was from the black market!!! Now I'am campaigning in Canada for George Smitherman in Toronto Centre is a big Guy Community and many others political celebrities!!! He’s brilliant. Didn’t matter if you liked him or not. Either way he made look! I adored him and his courage.
He love his hat always wearing it awesome thank you for sharing your beautiful video love your video thanks
He’s a gentle spirited old soul. I admire his bravery and confidence back then and after. Wish I could meet him in person one day. Love you loads 💖
What a beautiful human being.
i believe this is the interview that made me fall in love with him. men who wear makeup and have long hair but still speak like men are so unbelievably sexy.
He is so gorgeous
Andy Jones yep I could put him out on the corner and make me all kind of money. . .... Haha 😋
You replied to yourself calling yourself a fag?
@@Danimal77 The fact that you replied two comments here of men recognizing he's a good-looking man makes me doubt of your sexuality. Why do you feel uncomfortable when you see a secured man complimenting another one without being necessarily gay?

Wow ,this brings back memories . I was just a kid and Boy was George my whole world.Such a beautiful, Gentle, kind sweet soul. always loved how sweet George was. George was absolutly adorable here ! I really respect him as a interviewer because of how he treated George .I don't know how anyone could be mean ,or how anyone could laugh at him ,hes just a babydoll He's just always been so loveable.
REbecca KIng you're lucky. I wasnt born in the 80s and I agree with your comment
I think Boy George was born wise. Even at this young age he talks a lot of sense. I admire his forthrightness.
Boy George is a intelligent, interesting person , very likeable and a pleasure to be around, I’m glad I was born before 80s so I could enjoy that decade and the music of that decade and the culture clubs great music , thanks to boy George and Mikey, Jon , Roy, and Helen
What a sweet person. Always loved them.
he's a great joy to me. ive watched him for all the yrs he's been singing and his band, too
David looked so uncomfortable(as well as the audience) esspecially at 9:15. It's very sad actually. George was very kind and polite (as any person would be) and in return all he got were awkward questions about his appearance and mocking laughs from the audience. I'm glad the world has changed
Crazy, David would have not speak like that to a queen in New York back in the 80s. I think it was kind of embarrasing to the Boy.
people in the 80's were not woke at all
@@kasajizo3136 the only woke one was Boy Geroge

*Holy fuck he is too beautiful I can’t take it. Love him with all my heart.* ❤️
“you know, you’re obviously very...”
“beautiful, yes, i know”
a beautiful, well deserved kick to the face
Letterman gets credit for resisting the temptation to make George the butt of his jokes (it would’ve backfired anyway, George would’ve handled him lol). But for 1983 certainly letterman gets props for taking George seriously. His questions were genuine curiosity and how can one learn if they don’t inquire? I remember loving George’s audacity and courage. And he could certainly sing.
Love his energy 💙
I'm 55 and binge-watching BG interviews. What a trajectory he's had.
Isn't it a shame how much time they spent talking about his appearance than about his artistry?!
He has an amazing voice so his success is warranted.
beutiful in looks inside beutiful is another thing
Everyone was so uptight and they didn't laugh at his jokes, they would only laugh at him. I hate that
They didn’t understand the subtle British sense of humor.
I have a tattoo of BG on my chest. Got to hangout with him backstage at a concert in Denver for a few hours. He's a sweetie pie. He even dedicated a song to me 💟
I remember this interview ..I use to wear a hat similar to this and do my hair like George ..I never wore anything that matched ( still don't ) trying as a kid to copy his look ..
A genius that was way ahead of his time. Culture Club’s music and his voice is brilliant! “Do you really want to hurt me?” is trance inducing to this day! Boy George was a game changer and maverick! Props to an Musical Icon! 🔥
