    Thank you for the video. Initially my daughter knocked the soap dish and four tiles off the wall. There were newspaper stuffed in there from 1954. I went to the hardware store and that adhesive didn't work. Then went to Home Depot and this very young clerk sold me Dap adhesive, that didn't work either. I followed your in instructions and used thin set. So far, so good. Just waiting for it to dry to put silicone on. Your video was very clear and concise, yet with simple directions. Kudos to you!

    Hey thank you so much for sharing this!! Do you by chance recall where you purchased this soap dish from?? It looks identical to one that broke in our guest bathroom shower and I cannot find one with a flat back surface ANYWHERE to replace it with?! It's a long shot - I know! I appreciate the response!!

      So we used to get them from home depot. I am not sure if they still carry them. I'm not sure if this one on amazon is the exact same amzn.to/3KHgNVx . There are a few more as well on amazon amzn.to/4ez7c0G Also if you google "tile soap dish" it comes up with a few different options. Hopefully you have already found a replacement.

    This makes it sound really easy, thanks for giving me confidence that I can do this! My only worry is there isn't a stud behind the opening, will that cause a problem?

    • @TheDIYGuyDOTnet
      @TheDIYGuyDOTnet  10 лет назад +2

      That shouldn't be a problem just make enough to get enough behind the tiles so it has something to grip onto.

    Actually, have one question. in my bathroom on the wall it's a tile & a half..but the half tile on the right side is slightly loose. Can I still place the soap dish on the wall?

    • @TheDIYGuyDOTnet
      @TheDIYGuyDOTnet  6 лет назад +1

      Not sure how loose it is but you could prolly get away with it but to ensure it stays on for a long time it'd be best if you could pop the loose tile off and clean it and the wall and re glue it back in. They make a glue/grout all in one that you could also use to re attach the soap dish as well.

      +Raynard Beck You will need a new holder if yours broke, Need plaster of paris, or mastic glue, hammer, drill, screws, small bucket to mix in a puddy knife to mix it and a caulk gun and some caulk along with some tape.

      +TheDIYGuyDOTnet Thank you for the video!!! I should have watched before starting! LOL. I went to home depot and bought the exact dish you are installing in this video but it doesn't fit the hole. it is too big. Are there different sizes or will I have to customer order one?

    • @TheDIYGuyDOTnet
      @TheDIYGuyDOTnet  8 лет назад +1

      +Gary Zwick You're welcome. There are different size soap dishes. There are some that replace just one tile and then some that replace a tile and a half. I'm guessing your shower would use the 1 tile on and not the tile and a half. You could see if they carry both or score and remove more of the tile so that the soap dish you already bought will fit.

    I have a similar problem as Terry A., I have nothing in soap dish opening, wood has been destroyed! how do I secure the soap dish in this opening?????? please help!

    • @TheDIYGuyDOTnet
      @TheDIYGuyDOTnet  10 лет назад +2

      You will need to do the same mix up a good amount you might want to make it a little thicker so it will stay and get it on the inside of the hole on the tile and the backer board then put a good amount on the soap dish and be sure to get it in the holes on the soap dish push it in wiggle it a little bit and it should droop around the tiles and backer board to give it strength. Clean up/ smooth the edges where the soap dish meets the tile. Next tape it in and let it set up / dry over night. Then remove the tape and clean where the soap dish meets the tile and use some caulk to seal it and give it some more strength. Give the caulk a few hours before showering and over night before using the soap dish,

    can you make a video on how to remove a soap dish. I'm searching for a video but no one has made one; hoping you can. I'm not sure what tools to use or how to replace the tile once I've removed the dish. thanks in advance.

    • @TheDIYGuyDOTnet
      @TheDIYGuyDOTnet  4 года назад +1

      I will try to in the near future as a few people have asked about removing an old soap dish or towel bar. It may take me a while as I'm busy trying to finish building our new house to get a final CO cert. You will want to use a grout removal tool something like this -> amzn.to/31aXQRP cut and remove all grout then use a hammer and chisel and try and remove the soap dish off the wall you may need to break a small piece off then the use the chisel along the wall to remove the rest of it. Some soap dishes are 1 tile and a half so you maybe need to remove the cut tile to make the repair blend in better and look right. As for putting the new tiles in just use mastic or tile glue to glue back in the tile using the correct size glue trowel 1/8 or 1/4 . Let the glue dry over night at least and then grout the tiles.

    • @TheDIYGuyDOTnet

      This one was not where I would have installed it. It was in the middle of the back wall and it was about 6 rows up enough where if you where standing in the shower you could reach it. I like to put them on the back wall but closer to the shower head and higher up. Less water hits / gets onto them causing the bar of soap to melt and run down the wall and also kids can't reach them while in the bath to pull on them or use as a grab bar. Some people have them on the opposite the shower head.

    How did you take the tile off?

    • @TheDIYGuyDOTnet
      @TheDIYGuyDOTnet  5 лет назад

      Not sure what you mean. The tile behind the soap dish? There was no tile or sheetrock/ backer board behind it. If you mean the soap dish a kid grabbed it and used it as a grab bar when standing up in the tub and pulled it from the wall.

    • @Eastbaypisces
      @Eastbaypisces 5 лет назад

      @@TheDIYGuyDOTnet I mean if I wanted to add a soap dish like that to my tile wouldn't I have to take it off or no? mine is tiled already but want to add something to it

    • @TheDIYGuyDOTnet
      @TheDIYGuyDOTnet  5 лет назад

      @@Eastbaypisces Ahh. I follow you now. Some soap dishes are only 1 tile wide and some like this one are a tile and a half. So be sure to check the soap dish before you remove your tiles so you can remove the right amount. You can use a grout cutter or remover and remove the grout and then a puddy knife or chisel and a hammer to get behind the tile and pop it off, depending on how it was glued and how good will determine if it comes off as a piece or a bunch of pieces.

    • @TheDIYGuyDOTnet
      @TheDIYGuyDOTnet  6 лет назад

      I have never tried that. You could for sure use a tile mastic but I guess if you had a dry and solid backing you could give the liquid nails a go.

    Hmm. What about if it’s not near a stud? Great video tho.

    • @TheDIYGuyDOTnet
      @TheDIYGuyDOTnet  27 дней назад

      If there is no stud there sometimes you can get some screws into the backer board or sheetrock just behind the tile and then get enough material / glue back there to get it to hold. Sometimes you can use some spray foam and build it up and give it something to attach to.
