This is what the song means to me. It is about a man facing his death. The seconds tick by slowly. Previously in his life he made a pact with the dark forces in an attempt to gain knowledge of what happens after death, but that came with a price, and he regrets it as he faces his demise. He is tormented by his thoughts of what may happen when he passes, and he feels he is going mad. However, he still has a glimmer of hope that he can transcend that pact, because he may be more than what he thought he was. He hears a voice from somewhere he cannot see; they have come for him. It's too late - he passes. When he transitions into the spirit world, he sees that he will never find the answer in the darkness. He's scared as he sees the dark forces gathering behind him, but he realizes he has but to let his pact with them go (lay the past in the wind to spin); they cannot catch him. He lies beyond their reach, because the angels are there to guide (Sail with angels onward) him to the gate (of Heaven), again where the forces of darkness cannot reach. At the end he again realizes he has passed when he sees the light to which he's being guided. So to me the song is a message that even if you've made any sort of agreement or pact with the dark forces, you have but to renounce it to be free of it and taken into the light by the angels when you pass.

I can see how that would possibly true , KISS and Metallica whilst clearly next level , we’re at early stages .. and well if your on your A game as a band like QR then your going to be noticed 😎👍
This takes me all the way back to high school, which was in the mid 80's for me. We never thought Queensryche would eventually become a global band and sell out arenas when The Warning came out. Much deserved success for this extremely talented group from Seattle who started out as a Priest/Maiden decendant, type of band. One of the greatest to ever do it.
I was Best friends with Eddie Jackson's younger brother " Dave " during this time. These song's were great, but as an adult now I'm like OMG... Like the book 1984 EVERY song on this album is a spiritual prophecy of what is happening to us ALL now. WWG1WGA
It WAS intended to be a loose concept album. The intention was to take George Orwells' 1984 and add computer technology. The mix engineer messed up the order of the songs. NM156 should be first, then En Force. Roads To Madness was last. I think the character was an early prelude to Dr. X in Mindcrime. He was the antagonist and the end synth brought it around full circle to the beginning sound in NM156.
It is afuturistic album to the time right now. ( voices= v2k which is military operation). It is tied to spirituality in a way. It is an album for the chosen ones. It is like MK ultra. It is coming from the dark angels ; the nephilem who give the chosen ones a gift of knowledge what resides in 3d. It is a spirtual/ futuristic album to the present time 2032. The road to madness is for the chosen ones like Buffy the Vampire slayers. Madness is only for the chosen ones because they know the truth. The journey is that the chosen one has to go through the road of madness. The NM 156 is about NWO and the robots. Future world of world government controlling thoughts.
I've never heard the band talk about this song. They might have, but if they did, I'm unaware of it MY take on this song is that this person wanted to gain wisdom, and understand what happens after death, and takes his own life to find out. Then he's waiting, in some kind of limbo, to make the "grand transition". Meanwhile he chides himself for perhaps being foolish to take things that far. There are quite a few lyrics that are too vague to really get a handle on as well, mostly near the end. A movie from maybe the 1980's called "Flatliners" is what this song reminded me of. In the movie, a small group of medical students start inducing death in each other, and then quickly bringing them back to life so they could tell what they saw on the other side. As I recall, complications arise when one time they couldn't BRING the person back, and they remained dead. Interesting movie. This is a bit of an epic song, that gets pretty intense at the end. But you've just scratched the surface of the variety of Queensryche songs! I just saw your question in the title and thought I'd address that before listening to your reaction. Which I will do now!
Saw these guys in London back in 1985......I swear I've never heard a better singer live in my whole life...or a drummer hit the drums so hard....and I've seen plenty....check out "take hold of the flame" Live in Tokyo......you will see what I'm talking about.

That kind of astonishment has only ever happened once more in my life. December 2020, RUclips, Lovebites. This band seemed to be “excellent” straight out the box, like Boston and Lovebites. Wotcha Alan mate! How’s you? Was having my morning cuppa only just - and saw your upload here - brilliant, so you have now heard it - yay! Of course, this dirge is a wee gloomy track to be enjoyed with any beverage - caffeinated or one’s (wicked) tipple of choice. Mate - Watching you here does bring back fond memories of my times spent in old blighty - during my post grad studies that had first taken me there . Look after yourself, Alan 😊
OK, I'm back after hearing your reaction and comments. This song CAN be interpreted many ways, but for me, the most compelling idea is the one I stated in my other comment I made before listening to you react. The last line is very telling: "...seeing light at the end of sight reminds me, I've PASSED AWAY!" If you look at the song again knowing THAT, it takes a more definite shape, I think. You had some good thoughts about what might be going on though. And, it is a bit mysterious and fluid. Lots of thoughts going through his head. Another line, I feel that hints at going from life to death is: "Black, the door was locked -- I opened. Now I've paid that price ten fold over. Knowledge, was it worth such torment, oh to the far side of shadow?" Intriguing to say the least! As to this being a concept album, yeah, in a sense. It isn't a continuous story like Operation: Mindcrime, but the songs are written loosely around the themes of war, a decaying world in turmoil, and computer dystopia. Yes, there is also a sort of medieval flavor with the addition of choral and orchestral embellishments. It takes a few listens to absorb everything that's going on, and being said. And it's so very "Queensryche"! 😝 I enjoyed all your speculations and appreciation of different parts of the song, and hope you continue your QR journey!
I think they mentioned at one point they were high on mushrooms when they wrote this song. Which is understandable when you do it things right. Weed, mushrooms, they make you think, See things that you never thought of. I think that is why all that stuff is illegal. The people in control, don't want us to think.
Hi Alan , your mic is a bit low in volume compared with the music clip . . For the music its a bit weird but i get a bit of Metalica and a bit of Iron Maiden rhime of the ancient mariner vibes. also some hits of black sabath . But then again if this is a concept album it makes a lot of sence , the story telling of Iron maiden with a bit of the darker metalica tones. . A verry interesting piece . i never heard of this band but i will look them up .
Hi Marcus , I will up the gain , you ref Metallica iron maiden sabbath , if you check their playlist on the channel , you will here me mirror some of your thoughts .. they have a 25 year discography and I’m just starting 😊👍 it really makes my day when , a knowledgeable person like yourself is intrigued enough to go check them out a bit more .. to keep me that’s a massive bonus 🍺

@@alan-reacts65 I'm a serious metal fan I rank Judas Priest #1and Queensryche #2 of all-time. Just hard to explain until you listen to the details of their music.
This isn't a concept album. This was their debut album after they released an EP. Their concept album was their 3rd release "Operation: Mindcrime" in 1988. They did another concept album "Operation: Mindcrime II" in 2006 but is nowhere near as good as the first one. After he left Queensrÿche, Geoff Tate formed a band (Operation: Mindcrime) specifically to record and release a concept album (released as a trilogy: "The Key" (2015), "Resurrection" (2016) and "The New Reality" (2017).
Sir Alan, I like how you react this song. My take on it is entirely different. I dont believe it has anything to about any demonic forces or anything of that nature cause Queensryche is not a demonic type of band. But thru my experience growing up in an abusive home in every way you can think of. Years after it stopped physically it kept happening mentally. I tried suicide but it didnt work. And when Queensryche came out with their ep they had me in my heart. Then when this album was released they saved me from attempting suicide again. All the songs played a big part in this album. But in this song for example a few break down parts. The part that goes- im not quite what I once was or can I be more?- I would always question myself. Who am I? Why am I here? Am I worth more than I think? Or not?. The part of the song that says- releasing the names from the circle. Its not talking about a demonic chant. To me its about a mental counseling therapy recounting what happened to release the memory from my mind and loosening the control it had over me. - the blood words spoken - is talking about the threat " dont tell no one or else." But I had to release those things to regain my own self worth and power in my mind and heart. The part that says- black the door was, was locked i opened. The pain was it worth such torment.- that is saying thru the counseling remembering things that were blocked from my memory that resurfaced after talking about it, was it worth such torment? Yes it is cause I have to get it out so it can stay out. Then at the end when he is talking about blackened angels all around him hearing voices, seeing lights and he is passed away. Does not mean suicide or demonic forces taking him away. The Bible says when we receive Christ as our Savior and God as our Father that the old has passed away and everything has become new. We are now a new person with a new future to gain and old past that has no control. That last part of the song is saying that to me. All this release and letting go of my past has given me a new beginning A new future. A new life. The old me has passed away. Thats what Roads to madness means to me. Cause I was on the road to madness but this song took me off it.
Lawrence , I think I would offer this question / thought , the misunderstanding of mental health started with , demonic possession ! I really do cherish music that at its core has meaning , even if it appears to be frivolous, frivolous can be a method of counter reality , a break from the pure struggle of life . To be truly honest I need to read and re read your thoughts , because there is a depth to them , and that depth itself is derived from understanding your self , and that music can promote a re emergence of value in meaning .. If I make sense ?
@@alan-reacts65 yes I understand. Also check out "Child of fire" from that same album. That song is talking to and about the person causing harm to the children especially the slow part of the song when he directly speaks to that person. As its summer time i have an old classic 80s song for you , Lobo - The Carribbean Disco Show (1981) • TopPop ruclips.net/video/fzI6vO8_G0U/видео.html Imrich Laurence Lobo (Amsterdam, 2 June 1955) is a Dutch singer. Lobo had a number 1 hit in the Netherlands' Nationale Hitparade and the BRT Top 30 in 1981 (no. 2 in the Dutch Top 40) with 'The Caribbean Disco Show'. This song was a medley of old hits by Harry Belafonte. In the United Kingdom, the record reached 8th place. Lobo was usually accompanied by singers and performed under the name Lobo & the Pearls. With this group he also achieved some successes abroad. This is the Dutch artist Lobo, not to confuse with the American artist Lobo, also featured on this channel!

Great comments , totally agree , but I’ve still got so much more to enjoy and share from them 😊😎👍
I was Best friends with Eddie Jackson's younger brother " Dave " during this time. These song's were great, but as an adult now I'm like OMG... Like the book 1984 EVERY song on this album is a spiritual prophecy of what is happening to us ALL now. WWG1WGA
Much love brother. Great reaction to a fantastic song from my youth.🤘🔥
It’s so good to get that comment my friend .. enjoy Brother 😎
i consider this song about a survivor after a nuclear war and his descent into madness being the only 1 left
That’s a good insight , thank you 😊
It WAS intended to be a loose concept album.
Just magnificent ...never tire of it nor Queensryche...off the same album, highly recommend "No Sanctuary" ...great reaction
Richnorcal , thank you for the recommend and the kind words 😎👍
"No Sanctuary" is my favorite Queensryche song and "The Warning" my favorite album.
Crimson Skies .. ok now I have a new song to go find and bookmark 🔖 😎👍
I'm subscribing because you reacted to one of my favorite Queensrÿche songs. THANKS!
Thank you 😊, check out thier playlist here on the channel , only 3 songs but I’ve loved it 😊
It is afuturistic album to the time right now.
Thank you for choosing this one!
Thank you for watching it and commenting 😊👍👍
I've never heard the band talk about this song. They might have, but if they did, I'm unaware of it
MY take on this song is that this person wanted to gain wisdom, and understand what happens after death, and takes his own life to find out.
Hi Purple Kat 😊 look forward to what you think of my thoughts 💭
Sweet choice👍 this album is really mature and epic for such a young band just beautiful.
Luis, thank you 😊
Saw these guys in London back in 1985......I swear I've never heard a better singer live in my whole life...or a drummer hit the drums so hard....and I've seen plenty....check out "take hold of the flame" Live in Tokyo......you will see what I'm talking about.
Thanks Mark , I will 😎😊👍
@@alan-reacts65 I'm new to your channel and I'm trawling through your past (great)reactions...can I suggest you check out perhaps one of the most criminaly underrated bands of all time... Galactic Cowboys and in particular "I'm not amused".....can only be described as cross between Metallica and the Beatles!!!!!
Mark , of course I will , I don’t know this band ( that I’m conscious of ) so I’m on it 👍👍 thank you
This song and take hold of the flame best songs off my favorite the Warning.....
Robert Thanks bro 😎👍
I saw them right at the beginning, supporting Dio. Two nights running. Couldn’t wait to get to the second night (I hadn’t heard of them before the 1st gig). That kind of astonishment has only ever happened once more in my life. December 2020, RUclips, Lovebites. This band seemed to be “excellent” straight out the box, like Boston and Lovebites. Not only killer vocals but killer songwriting too.
Alex 😊 check out my first Lovebites reaction ( thier playlist is on the channel ) I think my jaw froze and I was in suspended animation 😳😂👍 and QR now have me hooked so we share a story 😊😎👍🍺
@@alan-reacts65 I saw that reaction at the time, and all others since (Lovebites, plus the odd other band). Bout time you got back to the ladies. I strongly suggest you look at anything from the “Awake Again Live from Abyss” studio live set, perhaps starting with their cover of Helloween’s “Eagle Fly Free…..🙂
This Sunday 😊👍😎
Every Sunday is Japanese band
@@alan-reacts65 I’ll be there….🙂p
It’s much easier to understand the previous song-take hold of the flame
Wotcha Alan mate! How’s you? Was having my morning cuppa only just - and saw your upload here - brilliant, so you have now heard it - yay! Of course, this dirge is a wee gloomy track to be enjoyed with any beverage - caffeinated or one’s (wicked) tipple of choice. Mate - Watching you here does bring back fond memories of my times spent in old blighty - during my post grad studies that had first taken me there . Look after yourself, Alan 😊
I was ( I hope you can see ) totally blown away , intrigued , confused and entertained 😎👍
OK, I'm back after hearing your reaction and comments.
This song CAN be interpreted many ways, but for me, the most compelling idea is the one I stated in my other comment I made before listening to you react.
The last line is very telling:
"...seeing light at the end of sight reminds me, I've PASSED AWAY!"
If you look at the song again knowing THAT, it takes a more definite shape, I think.
You had some good thoughts about what might be going on though. And, it is a bit mysterious and fluid. Lots of thoughts going through his head.
Another line, I feel that hints at going from life to death is:
"Black, the door was locked -- I opened. Now I've paid that price ten fold over. Knowledge, was it worth such torment, oh to the far side of shadow?"
Intriguing to say the least!
I enjoyed all your speculations and appreciation of different parts of the song, and hope you continue your QR journey!
Oh I’m all in now , it’s like making a new friend and you know it should be a really good friendship😊😎👍

And THAT ladies and Gentlemen IS WHAT IS KNOWN AS A SONG!
💥😎👍
It Seems that who it is ends up overtaken by the malevolent force like in rush-2112
That’s an interesting view , now I need to re listen 😊😎👍
This can be interpreted however the listener wishes.
I always say that , a song belongs to the individual not to anyone else 😎
I think they mentioned at one point they were high on mushrooms when they wrote this song. Which is understandable when you do it things right. Weed, mushrooms, they make you think, See things that you never thought of. I think that is why all that stuff is illegal. The people in control, don't want us to think.
Interesting 🤨
The song isn't specifically identified to it, but the lyrics fit well with this "environment", the one of the horror novels of HP Lovecraft.
Sir michael kaymen orchestrated
What else was he involved in ? I will go look up him up also 😎👍
@@alan-reacts65 quite a few he also did pink floyd comfortably numb and several more queensryche songs
@@alan-reacts65 also this album was the last to use the beatles mixing board at abby roads
Thank you 👍
Hi Alan , your mic is a bit low in volume compared with the music clip .
@@alan-reacts65 Well i started to be interested in music when i saw the movie Bleus brothers when i was about 6 or 7 . in the early 80s , a wonderfull time as many older and cult movies where beeing made that had realy good music, Rocky horror picture show , flash gordon .Robin and the 7 hoods (old 60s movie Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., and Bing Crosby. and Peter Valk aka columbo)
Not to mention all those old christmas movies with some amazing singers.
You cant help it to learn more about the artist and the music.
Yeah Quuensryche kicks some excellent heavy metal butt, now try The song Take Hold of the flame 1984 live.
Noted Paul 😎👍
@@alan-reacts65 I'm a serious metal fan I rank Judas Priest #1and Queensryche #2 of all-time. Just hard to explain until you listen to the details of their music.
I found out 😊😎
@@alan-reacts65 well Alan since you enjoyed the Queensryche Roads to madness 👍 try Judas Priest Beyond the realms of death truly amazing 👏
Paul 😊👍😎
Nice reaction. that song needs only to be experienced.
Thank you 😊👍
This isn't a concept album.
So much feedback from everyone I’m making notes 📝 😎👍
All this release and letting go of my past has given me a new beginning
A new future.
When I first heard this song I was like -"wow, someone does understand me." Child of fire. Check it out.

As its summer time i have an old classic 80s song for you ,
Lobo - The Carribbean Disco Show (1981) • TopPop
ruclips.net/video/fzI6vO8_G0U/видео.html
Imrich Laurence Lobo (Amsterdam, 2 June 1955) is a Dutch singer.
Marcus I actually remember this song , and more than that I remember my dad playing Harry belafonte , Lou Rawls , Matt Munro .. to make a few 😊😎 I’ve put the link in my saved 👍
@@alan-reacts65 Fun little fact about lobo the singer he was a teacher he tought physics , if i remember correctly and he actualy performed on a tv show where schools would take eachother on with small plays , music (playing clasical instruments), arts and crafts . some knowledge quizes etc .
its a shame that it got canceld after 20 years as it run between 1970 and 1989.
I think that it is about a man at the end of his life who is losing his mind in the process.
I hear allot of Iron Maiden in this
