      @EwenBell Thanks, I'm sure it will once I get my head around it fully😉 IIx it's just few more codecs, raw output, streaming and SSD support... Way of using it is the same as II. I went for IIx because I got a great deal with 50mm and 20-60mm lenses incl., SSD support and some future proofing...

    Hi Ewen.
    I am so glad to of found your video. I have had a GX85 for the past four months and it's a great little camera. I plan to move over to a full frame mirrorless next year, and was looking at the Nikon Zf as I have a Nikon D700. However, I tried it for size in a store and didn't like the ergonomics.
    The store owner saw I had the GX85 and said to look at the S5ii and it's lenses. That is what I am doing and I am impressed at what I am seeing and value for money as well.
    Your video has been the most thorough about this camera, especially its photography abilities. Your images with this camera are showcasing it to its fullest.
    Enjoy the rest of your day and regards from London.

It's so small and has most of the features you'll get on the S5II. Worth a closer look!

      Hello there,
      I'm an m4/3 shooter using the OM1 body and recently I bought a GX9 Lumix body for travel or some beginner street photography and I really enjoy it, the menú is just superb for a 2018 camera and lots of grest options for macro shooters as well.
      A full frame like S5MKII will be superb indeed, no doubt.
      Even so, I think the lens options choice is quite limited especially for wildlife.

Cheers and congrats on another excellent video!

    • @EwenBell
      @EwenBell  5 месяцев назад +1

      Awwwww thanks Sam!
      Lowlight video on the S5II is centred around the ISO 4000 figure, instead of ISO 12800 on the A7IIIs and ZVE1. So you get a much smoother ride through to the second range. The Sony kicks in higher up, but if you find yourself at ISO 10,000 instead of 12,800 you end up with trash! So you have to watch that.

    Fantastic, informative video Ewen. As others have said, so many finer points covered that other reviewers don't bother to mention. I currently have the Leica SL2-S and whilst I love the images it produces, compared with the S5ii its AF performance and functionality are seriously lacking. The bonus is that I can continue to use my L mount lenses (and M lenses with the adapter). I might even upgrade from the 150-600 DG DN to the 60-600 which by all accounts is a sharper lens with better focussing. I also have the 90-280 Leica which should go OK on the Lumix. Nice to see some pics from Melbourne/Oz - I am an Australian travelling through Europe this year and looking forward to getting home at year's end and purchasing the S5ii (cameras are a ridiculous price in Europe). Cheers, Phillip

      We really like that SL2-S. It feels nice in the hand and so well built. Even the menu system is quality. As you say the S5II just keeps pushing the boundaries further though. If you're shooting birds with a 600mm, can recommend the upgrade to the S5II and it's AF system. I have a video specifically for the 60-600mm here as well. That is an amazing lens.

    For the high-res mode, do you see any noticeable difference in sharpness and quality when using a tripod instead of handheld? I have an S5 and I use the tripod-mounted high-res mode extensively for landscapes. But lugging around a tripod just for the high-res mode is becoming a chore, particularly when hiking. If there is not much difference in quality between tripod and hand-held for high-res shooting, then I will consider upgrading from S5 to S5II.

    • @EwenBell
      @EwenBell  5 месяцев назад +1

      The handheld mode definitely works, and one reason is that it takes twice as many shots to assemble. If you're using a decent shutter speed that sequence is captured very quickly. So yes, genuinely a workable feature!

    Just a great and informative video! As you said you're the Panasonic ambassador, I have a question for you. Could you tell me why Panasonic doesn't make an AF adapter to allow us to use L-Mount lenses to M43 body? Imagine if we can use the Sigma 70-200mm and 500mm on G9II for birds and wildlife. Hoping you can ask Panasonic for us about this idea. Thanks in advance!

    • @EwenBell
      @EwenBell  2 месяца назад

      I cannot speak officially for Panasonic myself, but can tell you that they don't make ANY adaptors as the third party market covers it pretty well. So the question really becomes, why doesn't anyone make L>MFT adaptors? EF>MFT exists, but not L-mount. My guess is the same reason there's no Sony to L-mount adaptors and vice-versa... The distance from rear lens to sensor is too similar.
      I once tested the Sigma 150-600mm Sport (EF mount) on the G9 with an adaptor, and it was dreadful. The native MFT lenses are just way better and sharper. Those older EF lenses were never designed for such tight tolerances which MFT demands. And the Panasonic 100-400mm is sooooo light compared to full-frame. I'll stick with native for MFT :)

    Very good and detailed video! Thanks a lot! I have one question: for low-light photography, would it be better to use V-Log mode and the second native ISO (ISO 4000)? I've heard that dual native ISO is available only in V-Log mode, with ISO 640 and 4000.

    • @EwenBell
      @EwenBell  День назад

      A lot of folks won't use log gamma for low light, because they're worried about noise. In good light I over expose VLOG with +1.3 stops, but in night light I tend to drop that to +0 stops or lower. All I'm really doing is exposing for the highlights, instead of the entire frame. So VLOG works fine for me in low light. Every winter I am in the Arctic shooting in low light, and still stick with VLOG :)

  • @rw3452

    Firstly great video! Loved the info and the way it was created. With autofocus do you think the Sigma MC-21 for EF will be able to get continuos AF like it video with video, have you ever tested any EF glass for photography. Also, I've had issues with S&Q (in PAL) not being able to shoot 50fps, it can do 1-60 but 50 isn't a setting available. If you are in touch with Lumix please could you ask. I tired on the one of their live YT's but they said it was possible in PAL but it's not. Also, a minor point I think you could do with a less less head room 😇, but feel free to ignore I don't mean to be rude.

    • @EwenBell
      @EwenBell  4 месяца назад +1

      Thanks for the kind words :)
      I've used the Sigma, Viltrox and Fotodiox converters with EF lenses. Have a few items on them at my website:
      ewenbell.com/blog/New_Life_for_EF_Lenses
      The S5II AF system has been optimised to make use of EF lenses and for video it's been very smooth. Can recommend. Please note that while the EF lenses work very well, don't expect DSLR designs to deliver performance to match the native L-mount system. A lot has changed since EF designs were at their peak!
      If the high-speed frame rate is critical to you, the alternative is to record in movie-mode at 50fps and then adjust the frame rate for any clips in editing. For example, in Davinci you can select "clip attributes" for a clip in the media pool and change a 50fps clip to 25fps (if you're using a 25fps timeline).

    At 5:55 how do u take high megapixel photos handheld . What are the settings?

    • @EwenBell
      @EwenBell  3 месяца назад

      In the photo menu there's a menu for high resolution shooting, and the first item is to activate handheld or not. It takes twice the number of frames once handheld is activated.

    While keeping autofocus on AF-C. The continuous autofocus goes away while shooting in manual mode dial. In the Movie Mode dial, the continuous Autofocus seems to work fine. Is there a way to keep continuous autofocus while in manual mode? Like say I want to take a thumbnail of myself the shots might go out of focus and I want autofocus to be continuous

      Hi Jeb. Stills and movie are different, the AF only responds while half-pressing or fully pressing the shutter in any of the still modes (PASM). In video, the AF can be set to respond all the time, but for stills you have to tap the shutter to trigger the AF.

    are you going to make another one of these videos for the S9 too, i think it would be great and only made obsolete by Lumix removing or increasing the recording time limit

      Will see if I get time for the S9, although it would be very very similar. Just delete the bird section and the drive dial :)

      @EwenBell 😭 understandable. I'm cross shopping the S5ii and S9. Trying to pick between the upper limit functionality vs the cosmetic appeal despite limitations

      Would like to but Nikon haven't sent me a camera to review for over a decade :) We get them on tours from time to time and I like the menu system. Was helping someone with a Zf on the weekend and have to say that didn't appeal to me so much. Definitely prefer the Z6 series.

      Magnificent. I've been using the Sigma 60-600mm with the S5II and it's beyond anything I've ever used before. I was out on a boat shooting terns as they buzz past us and the S5II was nailing it. Not so much my friend with the Canon R5 :)

    Thank you for this video. It is very helpful. I don’t have the owner’s manual. Even if I did, they seem to be written in Japanese and then translated into English. Something seems to be missing in the translation. Sometimes it is hard to select from the options as I’m not clear as to exactly the choices are different.

      Thanks Martin! The trouble with manuals is they tell you HOW do use a button, and not WHY to us ethe button :) Glad this was useful to you.

    Hello,
    Thanks so much for your settings. But I face a big problem on my macbook 14" m1 that the raw file is so dark and I can't edit it but it seems like the information there but I can't get it because it is so dark.

    • @EwenBell
      @EwenBell  9 дней назад

      If the raw file is dark it's likely because you have underexposed that photo. Nothing to do with the MacBook. What software are you using to edit with?

    Can I charge my camera s5ii with the USB-C and the AC adapter plugged into the electricity directly or that has a problem and I should buy a power bank?

    • @EwenBell
      @EwenBell  25 дней назад

      Can charge the S5II battery direct to camera from any USB source. I've done it with my laptop, with a USB charger, with a powerbank, etc. Same for S9 and original S5.

      Yes everything in this video is shot with the S5II.

    What irks me is that Panasonic does not sell its Lumix cameras in South Africa only online. You can find Sony, Nikon, and Canon.

    • @EwenBell
      @EwenBell  3 месяца назад +1

      Same for many other countries. They're a small brand and don't always have the resources to open into certain markets. Even in Singapore they don't sell LUMIX. If they can't resource proper after sales support they won't officially sell into a market.
