  • TikTok gets a lot of hate, and most of it is justified. Today, we're discussing it's negative effect on writing, as the rise of the app has coresponded with a decline in writing quality, especially in TV.

      The new MLP series(gen 5).
      I know. I know. Pony show. I'm apart of the old fandom that wanted to give the new stuff a chance.
      I know that gen 4 was simple and had problems, but at least it made you think and put pieces together. Now it just feels like they're teasing us with simple mystery at the sacrifice of the narrative. There's not any kind of friendship lesson, no smart characters or charming ones in general at this stage, and it feels like the world is just a cheap grab at making toy sets and viral phrases.
      I desperately wanted to like it, because animation is in danger as a medium these days (even with Disney), but it was like taking a bite out of your favorite cookie and finding out that the recipe changed into 90% preservatives.
      (warning: Rant)
      As a side note and commentary on animated content:
      I'm also still bitter that all my favorite shows that were smart and had good narrative foundations were torn from the ground mid-bloom.
      Infinity Train was about to finally start touching on the big questions in the show in a fifth season before it was cancelled due to "no child entry point" further treating the audience (even children) like they're stupid.
      Centaur World was a phenomenal show with near expert direction, but could have been even better if they were not forced to fit everything into two seasons.
      The Owl House is going through it's third season, but is only being given an insulting THREE EPISODES to cover all the mysteries, character arcs, and very complex resolutions to problems. All because it's not "marketable", which makes the short time we have with it that much more bittersweet.
      Summer Camp Island is a very simplistic show that still managed to lay ground work for greater threats and mysteries that were put in a final season that Warner Bros tried not to release because they wanted to write it off as a tax cut. (Luckily, creator Julia Pott isn't letting that slide. So we WILL see it. Just later)
      Craig of the Creek was forced into having a final season earlier than they wanted, but at least it's getting a resolution.
      All of the "new" animated content from most giant studios is just reboots and retellings. Even long revered writers and creators like Pendelton Ward can't seem to get studios to take his original stories or works because they don't come with a built in audience. Compile that with the lack luster Live Action movies that disrespect their roots at every twist and turn by simplifying or pandering or assuming that you won't understand their corrections if they don't spell it out for you, and you get the worst sundae that late stage capitalism in media can make.
      The whole of animation is in crisis since the streaming wars and the Warner Bros/Discovery Merger. Shows don't go on as long. Plots get dropped and destroyed for the sake of penny pinching. People are assumed to be dumb little nuggets who can't read subtext. Messages from old content get muddled and corrupted. New stories hardly if ever get to see the light of day, and it just makes me clutch onto my dvds/blurays/books/my own works that much closer.
      Moral of the story: Support Cartoon Saloon (Ireland based studio). They just came out with My Father's Dragon, are in production on "Julian is a Mermaid", and Wolfwalkers was a literal masterpiece that should not have lost to Soul.

    You've became my favourite creator, and there's two reasons for that: you're not afraid to speak something that many people think but not dare say, and you do that in such a measured and respectful manner that it's either way impossible to hate you. Either of these things would not hook me on their own but when they work together it feels like a breath of fresh air.

    It could also be that in film school we often are taught to make shorter films as opposed to feature-length because of how hard or costly that is, but yeah I've been a little concerned about people being spoiled with tick-tock videos, having short attention spans, and lack of patience. Although that just seems to be the curse of youth as Hudson from the show Gargoyles put it.
    I've also noticed how some films have been having fast pacing and feel like they're on the go and can't stop to let characters talk or build relationships. Star Wars force awakens I think suffered from this 🤔.

    • @gregowen2022
      @gregowen2022  Год назад +2

      That is a good point, but somehow they lost the ability to still tell a story full story in that short span. Some of these new shows can barely be said to have a story at all

    • @CLDJ227
      @CLDJ227 Год назад +3

      @Greg Owen Yes or they are stretching out their stories. I've always felt like a show should have 8, 10, or 13 episodes if they got the story for it.
      Also, you speak a lot of truth about the hyperbolic or sarcastic nature of the internet no to mention the gotcha games, trolling commentators, and pedantic nitpickers that people sometimes will sadly apply to real arguments or conversations about whatever instead of learning how to properly do those things or communicate.

    • @katharinas6899
      @katharinas6899 Год назад

      I know this is a bit late, but what I've learned is "respect the audience's time", and I feel it to be missing from a lot of modern productions. For a scene, ask yourself if it really needs to be in there. Or stay there longer. Does it serve a purpose? Sometimes that purpose might be "yes, because it looks awesome" or "yes, the character needs a quiet moment to think about what happened to improve the story". Both are valid and have to be considered and balanced. But that is not the angle modern productions follow; Instead they do the flashy thing over and over in short amount of time without any respect for the audience or their time.
      By that ruleset, your story can be short or long, take exactly as many minutes as it needs, but it will be better for it either way.

    A lot of gaming now is developing just enough to encourage kids to grab their parents credit card to pay for microtransactions. I am not. I just thought programming would be fun, and I was right! It's really cool and I don't know why more people don't do it.
      It occurs to me now that perhaps I enjoy it so much because I don't do it professionally.....

    I just hate the fact that gen z is getting blamed for the downfall of all entertainment being terrible like we were the one that created these shows and movies it in the first place. The modern system is suffering from lack of knowledge of what young people actually watch these days and just pull from whatever they see is popular on TikTok and RUclips instead of actually talking us first to see what teens and young adults actually like.

      Don't feel too bad about it - they did (the market) the same with every prior generation just in ways that were more in line with those times. Also I don't really think most people blame Gen Z anyway, just a few loud people. Next generation is the future! Shouldn't be ashamed about that. :)

    I hate capitalism, and what you said about people who hate capitalism could equally apply to people who say they hate socialism: they don’t know what they’re talking about.

      I think the point is to not hate, regardless of what you prefer. Hating something implies radicalism and radicalism leads to... well y'know. So yeah, disagree or not like something as much as you want but no need for hate. Either way we slice it we're going to have to compromise in the end; there's no perfect solution because humans are not perfect creatures.

    I cant say enough about your videos man. Refreshing to hear points articulated intelligently. I personally have gone to watching old Republic serials from the 1940s and 50s for entertainment. Writing as a whole is terrible in shows ( She Hulk, Velma) so much that they are unwatchable. I have always been fond of reading which is an excellent way to learn and be entertained and relax. The old serials are just fun to watch with no messaging or agenda just fun to watch with the episodes ending with cliffhangers and and great 1940s sfx lol. Keep up the great videos man!

      Thank you so much for the encouragement!
      I think we're going to see a resurgence of the older stuff, because people are getting tired of the new. Modern visuals have been a crutch for movies and shows. They didn't have any cgi or fancy sets in the 40s, so the story and dialog had to do all the work. Plus, as you said, it was just a nice simple story without trying to jam in messaging.

    If you want a real critique of capitalisms look no further than this entire video. Every complaint about TikTok and TV companies and beyond is a direct result of capitalism and the constant search for even bigger profit margins. All the shit shows, and cringe takes, and political virtue signaling is all just about how can we make more people give us more money for less effort.
