- TikTok gets a lot of hate, and most of it is justified. Today, we're discussing it's negative effect on writing, as the rise of the app has coresponded with a decline in writing quality, especially in TV.

Which shows do you think have suffered from trying to be like short-form content?
i just wanna say thank you for this video at the start i thought that they only wanted what was popular but i truly belive that quality beats quantity and with enough effort I cant fail. as of now i cant pursue my dreams because im in highschool but im looking into other creative endevors like comic creation or animation i hope the econemy doesnt fall before i start trying to pitch a show
Books have. Why take time and effort to read through an 8 hr adventure in Lord of the Rings when you can watch a 3 min recap online?
Our movies... most don't have a thread going through the scenes, it's just scenes smashed together to fill time
The new MLP series(gen 5).
I know. I know. Pony show. I'm apart of the old fandom that wanted to give the new stuff a chance.
I know that gen 4 was simple and had problems, but at least it made you think and put pieces together. Now it just feels like they're teasing us with simple mystery at the sacrifice of the narrative. There's not any kind of friendship lesson, no smart characters or charming ones in general at this stage, and it feels like the world is just a cheap grab at making toy sets and viral phrases.
I desperately wanted to like it, because animation is in danger as a medium these days (even with Disney), but it was like taking a bite out of your favorite cookie and finding out that the recipe changed into 90% preservatives.
(warning: Rant)
As a side note and commentary on animated content:
I'm also still bitter that all my favorite shows that were smart and had good narrative foundations were torn from the ground mid-bloom.
Infinity Train was about to finally start touching on the big questions in the show in a fifth season before it was cancelled due to "no child entry point" further treating the audience (even children) like they're stupid.
Centaur World was a phenomenal show with near expert direction, but could have been even better if they were not forced to fit everything into two seasons.
The Owl House is going through it's third season, but is only being given an insulting THREE EPISODES to cover all the mysteries, character arcs, and very complex resolutions to problems. All because it's not "marketable", which makes the short time we have with it that much more bittersweet.
Summer Camp Island is a very simplistic show that still managed to lay ground work for greater threats and mysteries that were put in a final season that Warner Bros tried not to release because they wanted to write it off as a tax cut. (Luckily, creator Julia Pott isn't letting that slide. So we WILL see it. Just later)
Craig of the Creek was forced into having a final season earlier than they wanted, but at least it's getting a resolution.
All of the "new" animated content from most giant studios is just reboots and retellings. Even long revered writers and creators like Pendelton Ward can't seem to get studios to take his original stories or works because they don't come with a built in audience. Compile that with the lack luster Live Action movies that disrespect their roots at every twist and turn by simplifying or pandering or assuming that you won't understand their corrections if they don't spell it out for you, and you get the worst sundae that late stage capitalism in media can make.
The whole of animation is in crisis since the streaming wars and the Warner Bros/Discovery Merger. Shows don't go on as long. Plots get dropped and destroyed for the sake of penny pinching. People are assumed to be dumb little nuggets who can't read subtext. Messages from old content get muddled and corrupted. New stories hardly if ever get to see the light of day, and it just makes me clutch onto my dvds/blurays/books/my own works that much closer.
Moral of the story: Support Cartoon Saloon (Ireland based studio). They just came out with My Father's Dragon, are in production on "Julian is a Mermaid", and Wolfwalkers was a literal masterpiece that should not have lost to Soul.
anything that's new. if it isn't shocking, it isn't gonna stay.
You've became my favourite creator, and there's two reasons for that: you're not afraid to speak something that many people think but not dare say, and you do that in such a measured and respectful manner that it's either way impossible to hate you. Either of these things would not hook me on their own but when they work together it feels like a breath of fresh air.
Thank you so much for the kind words! Hopefully we can make a go of this channel and talk about serious things without being angry about them.
In all honesty social media as a whole is killing our society.
I would agree. It's got its pros, but I think the cons outweigh them
I think that was one of the smoothest transitions into a sponsor I’ve seen on this platform
Thanks, I felt good about this one.
Now we'll wait and see if it converts. I'd like a real studio, instead of curtains and a bookshelf!
As a fellow aspiring screenwriter. This boosts my confidence. I write my scripts that are somewhat inspired by my personal experiences so that it connects with viewers. I will take this video as an indication to never stop. Thank you
Hell yeah! Never stop. People love personal stories, now more than ever since most things feel fake and impersonal.
You're one of the most sensible creators out there your takes are digestible instead of radical and you're genuinely the first moderate conservative I've seen who doesn't immediately go "Haha liberals"!! Or the other way round like "Conservatives are domestic t-e-r-r-o-r-i-s-t-s" it genuinely refreshing to see the middle of Tucker Carlson and Rachel Maddow
Also, Jesus Mohmmad Krishna i want that on my grave (because why not I'm born a Hindu I'll die as all 3")
I really appreciate the kind words! I tried to record some ragey videos at first that are admittedly successful for other people, but I just didn't like it. This is much more fun
To be fair to conservatives, we're living through the easiest period of time to make fun of liberals. Low hanging fruit can still make a good meal.
You sir mastered the understanding of online culture..I see bright things in store for you and your channel
I certainly hope so. Thank you for the encouragement!
Tbf the "online culture" has the size of an ocean but the depth of a puddle. But yeah i'm also really hoping Greg's channel here skyrockets because more people need a level-headed voice in their own.
It could also be that in film school we often are taught to make shorter films as opposed to feature-length because of how hard or costly that is, but yeah I've been a little concerned about people being spoiled with tick-tock videos, having short attention spans, and lack of patience. Although that just seems to be the curse of youth as Hudson from the show Gargoyles put it.
I've also noticed how some films have been having fast pacing and feel like they're on the go and can't stop to let characters talk or build relationships. Star Wars force awakens I think suffered from this 🤔.
That is a good point, but somehow they lost the ability to still tell a story full story in that short span. Some of these new shows can barely be said to have a story at all
@Greg Owen Yes or they are stretching out their stories. I've always felt like a show should have 8, 10, or 13 episodes if they got the story for it.
Also, you speak a lot of truth about the hyperbolic or sarcastic nature of the internet no to mention the gotcha games, trolling commentators, and pedantic nitpickers that people sometimes will sadly apply to real arguments or conversations about whatever instead of learning how to properly do those things or communicate.
I know this is a bit late, but what I've learned is "respect the audience's time", and I feel it to be missing from a lot of modern productions. For a scene, ask yourself if it really needs to be in there. Or stay there longer. Does it serve a purpose? Sometimes that purpose might be "yes, because it looks awesome" or "yes, the character needs a quiet moment to think about what happened to improve the story". Both are valid and have to be considered and balanced. But that is not the angle modern productions follow; Instead they do the flashy thing over and over in short amount of time without any respect for the audience or their time.
By that ruleset, your story can be short or long, take exactly as many minutes as it needs, but it will be better for it either way.
I feel like TikTok and short form content in general has made my terrible attention span even worse. Thanks China 👍
I feel it, too. I had to use my phone's app timers. I get 23 minutes of IG daily. Otherwise, i'll lose HOOUURRS to funny clips
A lot of gaming now is developing just enough to encourage kids to grab their parents credit card to pay for microtransactions. As for 'chronically online' if that isn't reflected in the whole plot line of 'She-Hulk' then I don't know what is . . . it just screams being written by people on Twitter too much.
It's a sad time for games, especially online ones. Publishers are constantly trying to find the balance between just how much we'll pay for and how little quality we'll accept.
Indeed, she-hulk was clearly written by people who get 98% of their interaction through a screen
Tik Tok killed my faith in Gen Z being productive and competent.
I'd love to blame Gen Z, but my own peers get sucked into a reel rabbit hole for hours. It's just addictive
@@gregowen2022 I love to blame Gen Z because I myself am Gen Z and I hate myself for it
Literally everyone is online these days. Even you. I agree that TikTok is bad overall but it isn’t just gen z on TikTok, it’s people of all ages.
@CageGD I understand that, yet it was a better place when Gen Z wasn't around. Internet or not, Tik Tok and social media as a whole I see as a cancer. It started on a basis to keep in contact with people but morphed into this monstrosity we know as modern day social media. I only have this RUclips account because it came with my email I need for work. Same with my phone. I am a ghost online with no public records other than this email. From my home town, work is a new concept to a lot of people from my generation and everyone wants to be insta famous. That's the tragedy of it.
@@TheElectronNinja I am gen z , and i don't have a tiktok and never will. Also, the reason I love early 2000s shows a lot more than current stuff.
Tiktok is too braindead for me imo. The content there is just too bad.
That's why I wait for the cream of the crop to be harvested and placed on InstaGram! Now THAT'S a life hack
The Last of Us episode one bothered me. They set up his daughter's death and then in the same episode had the payoff.
It felt like a season finale moment lol
That "WAIT FOR IT" ten seconds to wait to see the dog fall off the bed. I couldn't wait that long... really?
When a reel tells me to wait, I bounce. 98% of the time it's just a ploy to raise the video watch percentage.
@@gregowen2022 I guess I'm not up to date on the lingo but "reel"? Do you have a projector and there's a spinning thing that counts down?
I thought Reels were the term for tiktoks? Or is that IG? I know YT calls them shorts.
Shit, I'm getting to an age where I can't keep up with terms and, worse, I don't want to.
I never trusted it from the start, just like Twitter, and thanks for confirming my suspicions, man.
Yeah, these apps might have some little kind of potential, but it's buried in so much garbage that it isn't worth it
Oh man that Netscape logo. Back when the internet was all potential and would only serve to make you smarter by having all the information you could ever need. It was before the dark times, before the social media. It was a more civilized time.
It was a simpler time. Just looking at that logo made my knee and back hurt.
I would like to say that I was using that potential for good, but I think I was mostly waist-deep in Red Alert and Everquest
That steak R&B moment was ridiculous and hilarious 😂. Nicely done my guy 👌
Food and I have a special relationship
That growing allegory at the end was awesome 😎 keep up the good work
Quarry was a great series nobody seemed to get. It was dropped after only one season. Based on the great Max Allen Collins books. It was slow, cinematic even.. but you invested into it… a real shame… it didn’t compromise either… worth seeking out.
Entertainment and media has gotten so drastically bad that it's forced me to learn how to write stories and make my own comics. I originally only made my own music but man I am dying for a good action romcom or a deep superhero story. It's really hard work and I've had to do lots of research but I know that it will pay off
dang whenever i watchyour content i remember the grasp of the actual point of reality and how unhelpful and pointless scrolling through youtube shorts is 😮(thats a very good thing by the way)
I get sucked in, too. I have to use app timers on my phone or else I'll lose hours to Instagram reels of cute cats and people falling down
@@gregowen2022 ahahaa
7:03 YA (Young Adult, right?) is perfectly fine to enjoy!!!!
In fact, I personally set myself a goal to both create my own Young Adult stories (animation mostly, but I got every medium on my list!) as well as support and/or enjoy more indie animated stories (and stories in general) for the Young Adult demographic!
YA can be excellent. Kids books can be excellent. As long as the language and themes are well done, it is don't care what the target age is.
Good luck with your work! That's an awesome goal
It’s shows that try to have the same TikTok vibe that makes me fear the future of tv shows and films.
Then again, Puss in Boots the last wish and TMNT Mutant Mayhem look refreshing as all fuck. Thank you Spider-Verse for breathing new life into animation. Not everything has to be a 1:1 real life simulator with goofy aaaah characters like Illumination and Disney nowadays. 🎉🎉🎉🎉
That TMNT trailer looks great right? I tried to get a review up today but technical issues. Hopefully tomorrow. I geeked out a bit
@@gregowen2022 is it possible to get artistically erect? Because I was that!!! 💙🧡💜❤️
Dude.. did you just hit me with an audible ad? So smooth my guy..
I don't think I can ever pull it off again, but it felt smooth
Really well put!!
I'm a writer and I actually needed to hear that message. Thanks.
I'm so glad! What are you working on?
I've noticed that you use a lot of y2k hip-hop and R&B references in your videos. I'm not saying that's a problem, just wanted to let you know that you're invited to the cookout
Ever since I slow skated to K-Ci & Jojo in jr. high, I was hooked.
I'll see you there. I'm told the food is much better
I was gonna say it's killing brain cells but TV is also doing pretty poorly. nothing but cut and past Cop and Law dramas, lame sitcoms and animated crap more interested in spread THE MESSAGE than being good.
Yeah, when it isn't ham-fisted politics, it's the television equivelent of the color beige
Your description of toc tic make me glade I've never used it, besides seeing clips on twitter
Best to stay that way. Besides, only the best clips make it to other apps, so really you're getting a curated experience
Your Pro RUclips Move totally worked on me. Kudos.
SUCCESS!
Vowel movement!!! 🔥 great line:
"The resulting vowel movement."
My God man! That was brilliant! Props to you. If I had a posse, I'd _MAKE_ them give you a slow clap at gunpoint if necessary.
I wonder if David Zaslav is going to bring us normal 'beats' stories. If so people will stand in line and flock to those shows and hopefully we will return to sanity ^__^ There is always hope
Honestly I gave up on a novel I was writing and now I'm thinking that I may want to convert it into a screenplay/script. No idea who's going to listen to me but hey worth a shot.
Definitely worth a shot! Look at the entertainment landscape right now. People are starving for good stories. What's your story about?
@@gregowen2022 it's a coming of age story in a swords and sandals fantasy. The main character lives in a rural house with her loving family. After getting lost in the woods she encounters a mystical creature which she doesn't know if it's a good or bad omen so goes on a journey to find out what the encounter means.
*Regulated capitalism* unregulated capitalism is killing us.
That can be true, but it always depends. I think of our health care system. It's regulated to death, but those regulations were influenced by industry lobbyists, so the regulation only benefits the industry not the consumers
I'm an alien 👾 I guess, but I prefer long-form content. I absolutely detest Tik T@rd and I don't have cable, I know I'm a nerd. My favorite video essays are usually longer than 30 minutes. In fact, I'd love for you to occasionally create something much more in -depth; I just discovered your channel and I'm binge-watching, ngl. Keep up the good work. You're awesome! 👍👏
Ahhh, the age old principle: short term gain at the expense of long term gains... also, amazing writing in your videos, definitely will revisit!
Thank you so much!
Well done application of Biblical parable juxtaposed with a D&D joke on Bardic inspiration...This is why I am now subscribed.
Remember when of and tinder tried to make shows
Why people want to spend hours on terrible tiktok is beyond me
I see Greg Owen post a video, I click and watch. It’s simple.
It's not simple to me. It's greatly appreciated!
I keep getting pop ups of people, mainly women, doing Marvellous Mrs Maisel viral dance.
I agree with the Capitalism comments. I think it's great and awesome, however I also think it ruins art in general. Filmaking, music, paintings, and to a lesser extent books all have decreased in quality as those markets just try to push the correct buttons in the consumers without any regard for being meaningful.
Ideally, consumers would push back on that. So can we blame capitalism for that or the people who hate on capitalism?
It's definitely a fine line. On the one hand, capitalism has made the arts more accessible, but on the other, they sometimes stray toward button pushing, as you say.
It's optimistic, but I can only hope that the capitalistic force of people's tastes will push back on some of this blandness as the audience gets sick of the corporate crap. Fingers crossed.
@@gregowen2022 that just my assumption but if there are too many people like "us" ( i mean us as people searching true meaning and leave something valuable behind us when we are gone so other will be smarter, wiser, and do something that benefit them in long terms) that be a problem to this society because people will be less dumber, wont live in a bubble and try to have a physical conversation than trying to argue online. Sorry iam french iam still improving my english. And maybe u can make a vidéo about chatGPT (problem with cheating, making people not look for answer themself).
Do u know the children book Matilda was "rewriten" 2 or 3 days ago (i might be wrong) ?
I stopped watching after 10 seconds. Was there something important you were trying to say? But seriously, great video. I've been thinking about this for a long time. You'll notice most children's cartoons today move at a BLISTERING pace.
Hahaha, I feel like 10 seconds is a good endurance record in today's online world.
Children's stuff IS crazy now, right? We're putting them in a flashing light trance from an early age
Really enjoying your content keep it up. And are you a SWE?
I am not. I just thought programming would be fun, and I was right! It's really cool and I don't know why more people don't do it.
It occurs to me now that perhaps I enjoy it so much because I don't do it professionally.....

Some idiot on Michael King's review of Velma said I couldn't write. Because I don't like the interpretation of a fictional character I can't write? Thank you random troll on the Internet who I don't know. 😂
Napoleon Dynomite
I just hate the fact that gen z is getting blamed for the downfall of all entertainment being terrible like we were the one that created these shows and movies it in the first place. The modern system is suffering from lack of knowledge of what young people actually watch these days and just pull from whatever they see is popular on TikTok and RUclips instead of actually talking us first to see what teens and young adults actually like.
Don't feel too bad about it - they did (the market) the same with every prior generation just in ways that were more in line with those times. Also I don't really think most people blame Gen Z anyway, just a few loud people. Next generation is the future! Shouldn't be ashamed about that. :)
glad to see you getting sponserships
Thanks! Hopefully you'll see a real studio behind me one day instead of curtains
@@gregowen2022 I feel the backdrop is fitting, people don't pay attention to the background of a video when said video is engaging
I hate capitalism, and what you said about people who hate capitalism could equally apply to people who say they hate socialism: they don’t know what they’re talking about.
I think that's true. It would be nice if more people read about it and gave it some thought instead of repeating tweets
I think the point is to not hate, regardless of what you prefer. Hating something implies radicalism and radicalism leads to... well y'know. So yeah, disagree or not like something as much as you want but no need for hate. Either way we slice it we're going to have to compromise in the end; there's no perfect solution because humans are not perfect creatures.
Naw socialism is stupid and wack. The more you learn about it the worse it is.
If you had watched Succession you would not say writing is dead
So my wife is watching it and I'm editing in the same room and I have to put in earbuds and background music so I don't get distracted and watch it. I haven't thought about why, exactly, but holy crap that show pulls you in!

I cant say enough about your videos man. Refreshing to hear points articulated intelligently. I personally have gone to watching old Republic serials from the 1940s and 50s for entertainment. Writing as a whole is terrible in shows ( She Hulk, Velma) so much that they are unwatchable. I have always been fond of reading which is an excellent way to learn and be entertained and relax. The old serials are just fun to watch with no messaging or agenda just fun to watch with the episodes ending with cliffhangers and and great 1940s sfx lol. Keep up the great videos man!
Thank you so much for the encouragement!
I think we're going to see a resurgence of the older stuff, because people are getting tired of the new. Modern visuals have been a crutch for movies and shows. They didn't have any cgi or fancy sets in the 40s, so the story and dialog had to do all the work. Plus, as you said, it was just a nice simple story without trying to jam in messaging.
I just saw Bros. It was actually pretty good.
You're sick
Can't tell if this is a joke or if you're actually serious.
A lot of the reviews were positive for those who saw it, just not many people were interested.
From the trailer, it sounded like you need to get gay culture to get the jokes. Is that the case?
@@ambivelent-artist No, it's serious. I liked it. I actually plan on doing a double review of Bros and M3gan to explain my full thoughts.
@@gregowen2022 Sort of. There were definitely a few jokes and references I didn't get, but overall I was laughing.
If you want a real critique of capitalisms look no further than this entire video. Every complaint about TikTok and TV companies and beyond is a direct result of capitalism and the constant search for even bigger profit margins. All the shit shows, and cringe takes, and political virtue signaling is all just about how can we make more people give us more money for less effort.
