I think that even if the film turns out to be lousy, its box office results will be worth watching.
Maybe it'll be a surprise hit like Barbie. (UPD: And Joker.)
That would send a clear signal that victim-mentality films can be successful so long as they focus on only one target audience, even without any connections to an existing brand name.
If that signal is sent and producers receive it, we can expect all sorts of divisive nastiness to crawl out of the woodwork.
Not just in Hollywood, but _everywhere._ Especially in countries where many members of the majority consider themselves to be victimized by minorities.
I would also recommend double toasted video on this, but I appreciate your balanced views on this 🤔.
This film seems less like it's really trying to commentate on trope and more like it's just using it as a gimmicky backdrop for this rom com.
I think that if they really wanted comment on this trope they should indeed had someone darker than Justice Smith and his love interest should be a white woman.
Doing all of that would also commentate on the trope of them not putting a darker-skined person in the main role let alone with a white woman as his love interest (look up the controversy with something like Hitch) 🤔.
In addition, I think that's often been one of the real problem with this trope, is that for a long time the magical negro role was one of the few roles a black man was expected to play. Therefore, if it still pops up today it can feel like we are still limiting the roles and images we give black actors.
Some last notes, 8:44 I imagine what they are trying to go for is less the feeling that you make everyone uncomfortable if you're the only black person in a room filled with white people, and more the feeling that you're uncomfortable being the only black person in the room, especially if people look at you funny and you don't know what they are thinking. I think perhaps something like Get Out did a better job of portraying this 🤔.
@@user-xb5xp6er9cThey also are pushing the idea that any Blacks people anywhere are from Africa.
For example, they claim the Philippine Aetas are Sub-Saharan Blacks that migrated to the islands eons ago.
As a Filipino, I take offense at the idea that they're the right "tenants" of the PH...
Black ppl are 13% of the US population. That can barely be called "minority". Try living as a blue eyed white person in Japan. We're like 0.1%.
Why did my reply to someone's comment not get posted? Bc I expressed my belief that there's plenty of evidence that points to northwestern europeans being the most successful, charismatic, & superior ethnic group/culture?
The best part of getting older/wiser is that you can go to the beach and realize that not one person thinks you should not be there because you don’t look like a swimsuit model. Getting out of your own head makes life more enjoyable

This is why Blazing Saddles is and always will be the best satire about race relations, ever. In the end, they realize that there are morons(who just need patience) and there are actual evil people that are after everyone.
This movie is the exact reason why I'm tired of people excusing racists of Hollywood just because of their skin tone, because the more they start defending them, the more almost blatantly racist things are going to come out, like Cleopatra, and this movie being only two of them, more blackwashings, cultural appropriation such as the new robin hood show,
Agreed. And the more they rely on that, the fewer ACTUAL black stories and characters will get made
@@gregowen2022 What is a "black" story?
Is "Back To The Future" a "white" story?
*people call me "black", but I don't identify as such, I'm English, not "African-English" (unlike "African-American")*
@@darrengordon-hillGood for you, you don't race-identify. Unfortunately, the emphasis on skin color representation in media is creating animosity towards blacks, especially where re-casting is concerned. Not because people don't want blacks cast, but because people don't want activists lecturing them and calling them evil by intentionally and emphatically putting blacks in roles whites once held specifically for reasons of antagonistic activism.
It's backlash to the activism, not the presence of blacks.
Almost? this movie if portrayed at its best stereotypes and generalizes white and black people and at worst are using racism of a race of racist decent to act morally superior about a racist joke. I don't rant and rave about "Little Black Mermaid".
I just don't watch it.
Or "Black Captain Falcon"
And my "disdain" is for THOSE CREATING IT!!
Isn't movies like this only having the opposite effect on racisim because they keep pointing it out.
There's an interview of Morgan Freeman
Interviewer: "How do we stop racisim?"
MF: "Stop talking about it."
The more you draw attention to something the more it pulls people apart. That's what he's getting at.
Morgan Freeman is talented and didn't need racism to have a successful career.
How do you stop malaria stop talking about it maybe it'll go away i don't think not talking about something is a very strategic way of getting rid of something .
Except that racism has already been "treated" (to continue your analogy) at the official level.
What remains is just leftover stuff in the hearts of individuals, and there are just as many blacks who hate white and Asians as the other way around.
@@mansamusa8410 You just brought up a real, tangible thing. Racist is a social construct. Those are on two different scales.
Think of it like this. Trolls and bullies can usually be stopped by just not confronting them on things. If you don't give a reaction, they will give up or find a different way to go about it.
I don't think just not talking about racism will end it but by keeping it in the social zeitgeist, we only spread it.
@@mansamusa8410 Malaria is a physical thing. Racism is a made-up concept (it’s entirely mental; there’s no physical object called “racism”). They do have one similarity, however . You stop it by keeping it from spreading. For malaria, that’s killing the mosquitoes. For racism, that’s ceasing to talk about it.
Greg's first 2 minutes here was better Social commentary than this movie could ever help to be.

The idea that PoC are in control and actively perpetuating their own misery is bizarre to say the least. Well put, about the problem we have these days in that no character is written with a characteristic that expands beyond beyond colour or gender- IRL no one introduces themselves as such, so why would a film character?
Indeed, this whole thing was just very poorly thought out
It's not at all bizarre. (It *is* bizarre that it *actually* is happening.)
No one tells PoC's that they can't or won't succeed, simply because of being PoC's, more than other PoC's.
The "race baiters" are probably the first big example.
This destroys hope, optimism, and dreams... what is more oppressive?
Likewise, the modern feminists do exactly the same thing to women.
Who pushes the idea of "wage gap", "glass ceiling", "patriarchy", etc., more than feminists?
These *are* the modern forms of "systemic oppression".
@@Nyet-Zdyes PoC? You mean coloured people?
@@walterkronkitesleftshoe6684 Yes, I mean that coloured people often oppress themselves by passing on the idea that they won't be allowed to succeed. This is one of the things that race-baiters do, but it is also an intrinsic part of CRT (Critical Race Theory), and BLM. It's also a big part of the current "fad" of trying to "compete" in the modern "Oppression Olympics".
To be a bit more to-the-point, I especially mean Blacks, as opposed to Hispanics, Asians, etc.
@@walterkronkitesleftshoe6684 Why not simply say black people?
The Magical N3egr0e trope looks like a race swap of the common trope in martial arts of "the mystical/wise master" and it came from way before in the first Kung fun movies and we've been seeing it in movies like The Last Dragon, Kick Boxer, Karate Kid, Kill Bill and so... And it's just the modern interpretation of the wise figure that guides the hero in the first part or though out he's journey, like Virgil in Dante's Inferno in the Divine Comedy. Anyway, not a movie I would watch even for free in streaming.
Thank you for the video.
Honestly, the irony is that many of these writers/directors cast black people in these roles to be more progressive and show that wisdom can come from anywhere. Then there's people who come around and find something racist about it, totally undoing what the original intent was. They are working against themselves.
"kung fun" is now in my vocabulary to describe all of those 70s and 80s martial arts flicks
@@cubist12 There are many things that was intended to be positive things in the past that people recently in the west just suddenly decided one day are negative things that we should not like or do anymore.
And no im not talking about like a 100 years ago there was plenty of stuff that was normal and no big deal only like 10 years ago that we are now supposed to think are bad things.
As a black man can honestly say, we are the LEAST likely to try to make people feel comfortable around us and everyone knows this!
Yes I have been in a movie theater a few times in my life. ;)
Yrs, we've all seen videos from the NYC subway...
But, Democrats try to maintain the illusion that America is a white supremacist hellscape that only they are willing to confront. Republicans therefore look racist for their inaction on the non-existent problem.
That is so true the amount of out pocket or purposely rude insulting comments I have overheard.
Came from a black girl who acted like she constantly had a chip on her shoulder.
Actually I know a lot of black people who tone down their personalities when they are in a group of white people. Have you heard of code switching?
As an Asian migrant, honestly, I feel scared going near black people due to several bad experiences. I know there are good black people out there, but majority are just rude. I was once flexed off the side walk into oncoming traffic. And the group of black teenagers just laughed.
Professional setting, I avoid black people at work. I work in the hospital and the rudest coworkers I have were black women. I moved out of New York as soon as I could.
I really HATE this time in cinema. All the pandering is just boring. It doesn't make for a good or compelling movie.
Can we PLEEEEASE, get back to making movies for entertainment. I haven't spent money to go to the theater in about 3yrs, that includes movies that are suppose to be for kids. I just wait for all of the reviews and for the movie to come out on a streaming service somewhere.
Thank you for the work that you do on your channel.
I agree, I want the feeling of movies back. They are either a vehicle for cheap and lazy identity politics, or CGI mashups that aren’t even fun on a basic level.
I appreciate you watching!
A feel good movie with likeable characters who do admirable things and get along. Some humor from human interactions. With timeless themes and an interesting plot. Maybe a good character arc as the protagonist grows.
I’m ok with changing a fictional white character to a POC, but in the case of making a historical figure Anne Boleyn black when she was not, just seems so pointless and hollow. That was totally inserting into white culture and history when instead they could have just chosen to tell an African or black story instead. In an age where people need to see “themselves” onscreen, what was the point of that? So little girls of color could think “one day I can be queen of England”?
Let’s make a movie about black people crying over reparations for something that happened 150 years ago and has nothing to do with a majority of white people today.
A lot of the movies being put out by Hollywood these days are made bc it's the cheaper route.
That's why we're getting so many re-boots, comic book sequels and race swapped movies these days. It's cheaper to make those than to make something original and unique.
Even the last Indiana Jones movie didn't feel like an authentic Indiana Jones movie bc they leaned too heavily into the "washed up University Professor" trope. Didn't seem like an authentic personality trait in Mr. Jones.
And even that sequel was only made bc everyone was so infuriated by Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, which I thought was way more unique and original than that last one.
This reminds me so much of All In The Family where Michael, the liberal, is told he is racist by his black friend. When he says how he is always talking about the race issues with him. The Black guy says that is why. Michael says what do you want me to talk about, the weather. Black guy answers why not Black people have weather too.
I thought it was going to be a movie about dismantling the trope or something. Then I took time to see what it was actually about. How does this get a green light… like WHY.
black privilege
8:32 I've seen LILLIES OF THE FIELD. It's not a "magical minority" movie. Like in HITCH, Sidney Poitier is the main character with a full arc and everything. The nuns in the film believe he was sent by God, and I suppose that's open to interpretation, but calling it a "magical minority" film is inaccurate.
Arguably Bagger Vance is the main character of The Legend of Bagger Vance. I know, it's completely breaking the mold to have the titular character also be the main character. But if you think about it the mystery surrounding him is the whole point of the movie. Matt Damon just serves as an anchor point because he's the connection between Bagger Vance and the rest of the characters.
Also, Chubbs had a story. He was a golfer whose career ended when an alligator bit off his hand.
This trope has gone through major concept creep. Like the first people to complain about it focused solely on magical/ mystical characters. It then expanded to black characters that help white people, to black characters that are sort of selfless.
I don't know. I think I want this to become a thing.
I like the idea that Black people will manically start being nice to me just become I'm White.
Agreed. I want to be the main character so a random minority magically fixes my life. Where do I sign up?
We need more movies just like this until it becomes reality.

A premise like this can actually work especially if there intent is to make a satire which has been done before. But you have to make it in a certain way that does not come out as offensive which I guess the people that made this are not that creative to do something like this. Blazing Saddles is a perfect example of this one of Mel Brooks funniest movie that has offensive material but man is it funny.
Agreed. If the Wayans were involved and they really leaned into the absurdity of the trope, it could work. This just feels a little bitter
Sits back, awaits "Blazing Saddles was racist" comments...
Still amazed how much ANTI racism comedies have been classed as "racist" to "modern audiences"...
I'm "black British" (washes mouth out with soap), NEVER seen as "racist" celebrated on TV!!
If say a "Basil Fawlty" was "racist/sexist", he was the BUTT of the joke (with Manuel/women involved the sympathetic parties)!!!
In effort to show us that being that way is a social negative.
Yes, it should make you feel comfortable. Definitely not offend. Comfort you.
Stepping on a thumbtack isn't funny, and if you put it into a movie the audience will all cringe because they know how much it hurts. But stepping on a thumbtack, falling backwards, whacking your head on a wooden desk, and having a bowling ball drop on your head? Well you'll probably make the audience laugh with that.
In the same way I think Blazing Saddles worked because it cranked it's offensiveness up to 11; it didn't just refrain from holding back, it went above and beyond. THAT is the key to satire, you have to take something that exists in reality but then make it so over the top that it becomes completely unrealistic, and then we can all laugh at it. I wouldn't even be offended if this movie tried something like that, but it feels like it so desperately wanted to give a message that it forgot to be fun in the process. It wanted to be real and fake at the same time, and couldn't pick one or the other.
Even Blazing Saddles, in all of it's overly offensive glory, still actually had a pretty good message at the end of it that the audience could learn from, even while they were laughing.
if this was like a legitimate magical thrillier with a mildly irreverant/comedic spin I could honestly see it being a slam dunk, unfortunately, I doubt that. American Gods is sort of the bizarro version of what I'm talking about in that, it did take itself mostly seriously, but then had random bits of *_the message_* dropped in that, at least in my opinion, worked against it. A series that took an insane premise but played it mostly seriously with just a twinge of irreverancy could be quite good.
PS. I really hate how bastardized 'subversion' has become. I got sick and tired of it too until I watched MHA recently (what with the MCU being a trainwreck for the past few years) and it reminded me "oh right, subversion is actually like a thing that can be done well without just despising the original concept". It reminds me of the whole "90% of sci fi is crap" "90% of everything is crap" thing because we've (myself included) just got so used to crap writers using "it's being subversive" as an excuse for bad writing that we've sort of all just collectively forgotten it can be done well. Unlike "_blank_ fatigue" thing I can't even blame the people who legitimately just never want to hear another thing be subverted ever again because *_holy crap it is all just so bad now_*
Agreed. I think the racist stuff is hiding the fact that there just isn’t much going on in this movie
I always use Madoka Magica as an example of how to do subversion well. Good subversion looks at a trope and asks 2 questions. "Why is it this way? And what would happen if we apply real world logic to this situation?" Hollywood writers just look at audience expectations and do the opposite so they can get a cheap surprise.
Appalling. Is this a deliberate dud--like Springtime for Hitler in The Producers? The only thing that could save this is some real comedy. Not a chance. I read someone's note that it would have all the blockbuster power of Bros. Makes me wish for Mel Brooks and Blazing Saddles.
"Half black desires non-black"
WAY TO BREAK THE MOULD, HOLLYWOOD!!
I am convinced that they made this movie not as a farce or commentary or satire or anything along those lines, but with absolute sincerity. They *believe* this, 100%. They just thought it was "the right time". Not yet, it seems, but every day they're a little closer to being correct.

Hello.
I’m from the UK, and of course through the medium of RUclips, I have come across this trailer.
My initial reaction to the title made me put my head in my hands and laugh incredulously.
“Oh, come on!” I said to myself.
As I continued to watch, I said to myself: “With everybody and everything looking more and more on the edge, here’s this BS to set the effort, the genuine effort, of people slowly coming to the realisation that we as humans have more in common than not, and that there’s bad actor’s out there who make a living keeping us apart?… Well this s*** is going to set that back even further… F*** sake!”
Then from nowhere, as if by magic, (see what I did there? 😏) it’s now a Rom-Com????????!!!!!!!!
Confused doesn’t quite cut it, me ‘being’ that is…
I think in the order of balance to your comical Vid here, to which you made valid points, I have to tell you that we’re not a monolithic set of people.
For instance, where I couldn’t give a solid gold s*** if you’re comfortable around me or not, I’m still not going to be an arsehole (asshole) about it… I just don’t care enough.
Like you said, I have a myriad of better things to think about other than whether someone likes me or not… Not everyone will, and I’m good with that, that’s called reality.
Plus I’m the type that would be suspicious AF if everyone did! 😂
And I’m not the only one.
Thanks for making this vid, I needed a good laugh at this stupid film and it’s title’s expense.

2. the refugee story has (again only white males) complaining about the incredibly diverse refugees coming into the otherwise incredibly diverse city. On what grounds exactly? Dunno. It feels like a shoehorned commentary about refugees in Europe or the US.

It's just another classic example of racism being turned into big business. People may think racism is on the rise in America (despite it basically disappearing from mainstream culture for decades)...and that's simply due to money. There are too many people with a vested interest in racism continuing to exist in the mainstream narrative - entire companies, celebrities, politicians, etc. exist solely on the funds it generates.
On the movie side, this absolutely smacks of a self-insert with the body-armour of claimed "bigotry" (a hilarious term which is often used by bigots, weirdly).
9:30 - Realizing no one gives a crap about you really is freeing. That and realizing that others have some of the same fears and anxieties as you is absolutely a relief. The belief (or the need to believe) that they’re “special” messes with people’s heads.
As a person who happens to be blk, I always agree with you but(I said the b word I know), while your intentions are good, it assumes every blk person thinks every whte person isn't 'cool'. I have to correct you, most blk people do not assume every whte person they meet is rct. Also, we don't all use gang signs or are into spicey food lol! If the blk person you meet is displaying behaviour that indicates they are into spicey food or like gangsta rap or something, then by all means, you can try to relate to them on that level if you choose. You can see how someone like me would wonder "why is this guy talking to me about rap and trying to fist bump me'? It wouldn't offend me but, it would just make me feel I''m being judged by my cover. It would make me feel as if I'm a helpless victim and need coddling like a toddler . Think about it, on the one hand we are told to stop talking about rce and rcsm if we want it to go away, or not be focused on rce and on the other, many people will automatically hone in on our rce when we meet :). I actually do think we should all, blk and whte, stop focusing on it.
There's a show on Netflix that covers several areas in the world where people live longer, to try and find out some common denominators. One of the factors was that many of these people are disconnected from all the drama in the world that we see every second on social media. So, mentally, they are much healthier because they primarily focus on their day to day living. I think this relates to race relations in that many of us, without the influence of media/social media, would get along just fine in person. As humans, we share a lot more in common than we think. It's only what we are fed on a daily basis that separates us by race and politics, and makes us more uncomfortable with each other. This film is just another form of media that focuses us on why we are different, vs. why we are the same.
I think that the more we put others in boxes like the redpill and the like. We create those things we see.
I lost my fiancé a few years back and have started trying to date again and it’s harder it seems and I think it’s bc so many people are taking on what these groups are saying about them which then makes other groups say that the first group is X.

The trailer is pretty bad. It ruins the potentially interesting premise that this movie could bring with stupid anti-white jokes and generic rom-com tropes. But at the same time, it's just the trailer. Trailers aren't always representative of the movie that they're for. They sometimes leave out crucial information, or give off a tone that the movie doesn't actually have. So it could be that this is just a bad trailer and that the movie itself will actually be good. Now, is that a guarantee? No. It could still be garbage. But at the same time, we should still wait to give it a chance. Look at The Critical Drinker. When Prey was first announced, he was very skeptical of the movie, and made a ton of videos criticizing it. But then when it came out, Drinker realized that it was actually not bad, leading to him making a video admitting he was wrong, which in turn lead to his haters going "Ha! See! He walked back his criticism! He's dishonest!" My overall point is that, when it comes to the trailer, criticize it all you want, it friggin blows. But as for the movie itself, I think we should hold on to a little bit of optimism. It could pull through. And if not, we'll always have the Magical Negro sketch from Key and Peele.
Definitely. Though my main fear for the movie is that it won’t actually be racist. I think they are just using that to get eyeballs and it’s hiding a boring rom-com. But we shall find out in March!
I laughed out loud multiple times in this video and that rarely happens on any video ever. Thanks for making such great and entertaining content Greg!

You should be an advocate for colorblindness.
The notion of colorblindness is that people are treated equally with regards to their skin color. Similar to how we don't really care about hair color, even tho we can see what color someone's hair is. It is feasibly possible to get society to that point of colorblindness. We were well on our way there, until wokeness reignited race-consciousness.
The idea that "colorblindness" is the goal of literally being blind to skin color is a strawman and a lie by woke sophists who want to discredit colorblind ideals held by people like MLK.
Don't give credence to the fake definition of philosophical colorblindness that critical theorists have invented.
I see what you’re saying, but it really depends on the definition, and colorblind got poisoned by both sides. For some advocates, it meant ignoring all differences between skin colors, but that sometimes results in the larger population (white people) being Normal. It’s important to recognize cultural differences that often accompany skin color, but making it your entire personality is going too far in that direction.
I think of it like having a basic understanding of world religion. I have a general idea of when Ramadan is, so I won’t invite a Muslim friend to lunch or go on about my incredible meal in their presence. It doesn’t have to define their entire person, but it is a portion of them and its good to have some kind of understanding
@@gregowen2022 ..but unlike religion, skin color tells us *nothing* about a person's beliefs or life experience.
@geekowtlowd Hey dave, I like your idea of wokeness coming from an environment of woke thinking ,not just being direct woke "stuff" on screen. I'll be talking about it in a video. Do you want your whole comment with your name in the video? Or should I just leave it anonymous, like "A commenter made this point..."
Let me know!
@@gregowen2022 if you'd like to mention my comment, go for it. 🙂
Idk I think we should have more offensive comedies. This could/should have been a send up of racial attitudes on both sides. A new Blazing Sadles or Chappelle's Show. There's plenty to satirize in todays media especially the culture war. I just wish they had the balls and brains to pull it off instead of this kid gloves treatment. Thinking white people walk around uncomfortable with black people to the point of bottled up rage is as ridiculous as thinking black people's concerns are just in their heads (overblown maybe, but not completely made up). The problem is no side knows what it's like to be the other yet EVERYONE is an expert on race relations. This is what the movie should've lampooned, not whatever this trailer promises.
I agree, the issue is that so many folks in hollywood don’t seem to get the difference between making a purposely offensive comedy and making a comedy where you don’t care who you offend. The latter is funny because it’s all about the jokes and nothing is off limits. The former gets you something like Lady Ballers where you are trying so hard to be edgy and offensive, but forget the comedy.
It’s like a Tyler Perry version of Ghostbusters 2016.
I love the sigma male concept. Yes, guys, you don't have a girlfriend or any friends because you're too into your own stuff, and that intimidates others. It's definitely not because your social skills leave a lot to be desired.
@@a.wadderphiltyr1559 I wish I was a woman right now so I could identify as a phi male.
The critic proof comment is very accurate!
Guaranteed we will see headlines about the “racist backlash” to this trailer. So predictable
Gotta "love" Hollywood double standards. You definitely made me LOL IRL with this one! XD
PS. i can't believe that's the real title, i shouldn't be surprised
*NO FUN ALLOWED* 😞😔😏
Never. You don’t get escapism anymore!
I absolutely love these videos, the sort of “breaking down” of a very overlooked subject in today’s media. How it’s specificity targeted to separate people… and I’m not even white saying this!
Greg Owen, keep doing what you’re doing!
This is really a time when people should boycott these scripts it can influence young minds into a confused reality writing these FAKE REALITY SCRIPTS
"Dude, be whiter" - Christopher Duncan Turk
Justice Smith is black? The guy who played the biological son of Ryan Reynolds in Detective Pikachu? And they cast him as the BLACK GUY in this?
My dear brother Greg just know as a Black man myself this movie SUCKS. No one in my family even knows this movie exists besides me. It’s safe to say that the majority of Black people don’t care about this movie which should reflect in its box office performance. Either way good content. Keep it up!
The title reminds me of Nick Fury's "Black Girl Magic" from The Marvels. What a load of forced Woke dialogue!
Yes! So forced
Okay, black kid here, I’ll just give my two cents.
First off, yeah the “white tears” thing was kinda unhinged and the movie was still self-centered in its negro premise, you’re right.
There were two things in particular I wanted to say.
When the mentor character (I forgor his name 💀) said something along the lines of “the loudest thing in the room is their silence” I felt that. The amount of times I’ve walked into a room and felt their silence, their glares, their awkwardness as they try to gauge whether or not I’m a threat is honestly not fun. That is more often than not the loudest thing in the room.
At the end of the movie, Aren goes on a monologue about how he feels like he can’t exist in his own country.
I would like to say that I felt that on a level I didn’t know I could feel. Thanks to all the hate floating around social media and just the terrible political climate of this country, more often than not I feel like I shouldn’t even be here. This country wasn’t made for me, and there are a sad amount of people who believe that it shouldn’t be for me at all. It’s disheartening to say the least, but oh well. At least the internet allows me to see nicer communities.
Alright, that is all. Have a nice day everyone! :D
Honestly I have never heard of this film trope before. I’m listening to the reviewers and everything. It might be a dry comedy?! I don’t know. I just know I don’t care to see this. The same way I didn’t care to see about 95% of the movies that have come along in my 53 years of life. I go see films that seem interesting to me. This doesn’t look like I’ll find it interesting. Do I will have $24 to spend on something else.
I hope I'm not the only one asking but seriously who is this movie for?!?!....
Turns out teaching your kids to believe they’re special because of their skin tone…………wasn’t the best idea and still creates racist. Good folks
It would make me more comfortable if you wouldn’t accept ads and encourage Adblock
Liked the video for you
When this movie bombs I wonder what it will be blamed on.
I definitely see the danger of the victim complex, but to be fair to the red pillers there are actual examples of laws and hiring practices, not just statistical discrepancies. It’s important to remember the grass is not greener on the other side, it’s better to just tend to your own lawn.
when you make the movie less cringe with your white person ally banter, I think I may just lose my lunch.
justice smith sure did ruined his career this year i bet he ain't coming back for the detective pikachu sequle
#GregOwen:
For those who want to see a race relations satire done right, have I got a classic for you.
The year is 1970. Melvin Van Pebbles drops a cinematic gem on American audiences called....
WATERMELON MAN.
Yup, real title of the film. The late, great Godfrey Cambridge acts his ass off in this comedic take on systemic racism and magical comeuppance. A must see.. 😂❤
You're MY cool white person, Greg
Brooklyn 99 was the 2nd best representation of diversity on TV. #1 was the Expanse.
I want to give the Expanse another try, but the zero G boning in the first episode put me off. It usually means a show doesn’t have anything interesting going on, but so many people say this one does, I’m going to give it another go
Great video, as usual, Greg. I think the romcom part of of the movie, is part of the grift though. It don't think its "just a romcom".
The romance part of the movie appears to say, "I want something integral to my happiness, but can't have it, because white people.".
We really need more black-centric movies that let characters just be characters and not "black struggle". BUT, while this trailer may look bad. Maybe it's a bait-and-switch? Maybe the magic society folks are the twist villains? We'll have to see, I suppose. The trailer is pretty trash tho, that I won't deny.
The Struggle is all some people want black folks to have. Hopefully it’s a bait and switch and it’s just a poorly cut trailer. I guess we’ll see in March
So...in the Movie why didnt they only use Black Magic?
I was legitimately hoping this movie was a Dave Chappelle skit.
At least then it would have been hilarious.😂
It would be a joke on how blacks with power down care about blacks with no power. They would see themselves as the philosopher king from Plato.
Watched the whole thing. Can I have a cookie anyway?
🍪 Only because you asked nicely
I love your nuanced takes. I always come here for a voice of reason
I have to think (hope?) there's something more to this movie than race and the subversion of a cliche, but given the quality and dimension of what young screenwriters have been pumping out, I'm wary.
Who do you think will be in the theaters opening day? I picture a bunch of self-hating white women and few self-centered black people there to put those white women down.
I really liked that Yellowjackets show for having a cast or mostly women, black and gay characters, they were original, interesting characters and story wasn't woke.
It also shows that monstrous behavior knows no gender.
Tell us that you didn't do any cultural research or academic research without telling us.... 🙄
This is a social critique and trope - not race baiting...
Have you watched it?
I’m taking what I call the “ocean eleven” approach to life. Unless I’m trying to make a specific impression, I want you to immediately forget I exist the moment I leave your field of view.
Black people didn’t watch the film either. It’s bait and dumb.
The next "white people" movie that comes out, I'm going to use my white male privilege to say that ANYONE can review it.
You're welcome.
I never got the idea the "white savior complex" or "magical diversity character". I got doing good to fellow neighbour, help can comes from strangest places, or lazy writing to push story. It's odd to add race in everything. It's like They Live but instead of actually being alien's it's just some person being crazy.
Hahaha, that’s an excellent analogy. Hollywood writers are seeing racism everywhere, but it’s just the glasses
I care about this less than The Marvels and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom and I don't care about those at all.
Me trying to understand how to care about something less than not at all rn
Watching OG Star Wars as a kid, NEVRER ONCE considered it a "white story".
Concept was beyond my imagination/not taught to me by parents via nature or nurture.
Does seem a more "American" thing, though it has been showing up here over the recent decades (see that "first female dwarf of colour" actress)...
Don't watch much TV but have this Christmas season with the family - remarked numerous times as to when black people became such a dominant segment of the UK population (given their over representation in adverts)... meanwhile, I still haven't seen the hair products my mum's used most of my life EVER advertised on TV...
You need to go on critical drinkers open bar!!
I think the problem with (male-female relationship) red-pillers, and the race and gender driven movies is the high dose of medicine becoming a poison.
A small, appropriate level of awareness of the issues regarding redpill, race and gender can be very helpful if it balanced with positivity, empathy and practicing locus of control.
For redpiller, keeping 20% of the skepticism they have is probably enough. The rest of that 80% can be put into positivity or at least neutrality and relaxation.
Excellent point on Justice Smith. Dude isn’t exactly Michael B Jordan, you know, the kind of guy you would be worried about leaving you’re girlfriend around cause she might leave you 😅
Just like sound of freedom I'm not going to let people tell me what to watch or not watch.
I talk about Dolly Parton to my black friends, because that's what i like to talk about. Why change what I talk about just because of someone's skin color? And they talk to me about the NBA, which i don't care about. It's called sharing one's interests with another human.
5:38 "Up your butt and around the corner!" I say this all the time, with the same inflection, and my husband just rolls his eyes and tells the kids, "Please, don't stick things up your butt." Your his favorite RUclipsr, so watching his face as he heard you say it... PRICELESS!!! 🤣
I was on the Vegas Strip last week with the typical timeshare salesman pushing their product. Two of the Black guys had to let me know they were black. I'm sure glad they pointed that out. I guess I was suppose to buy a timeshare to show how not racist I am, but I've been told I'm racist from birth so why buy a timeshare ?
2:20 Wow! You suddenly sound _exactly_ like Mark from Fanboy Flicks here. I'm pretty sure it's not possible to steal someone's voice. But, a minute ago that sentence would've started with "I _know_ it's not..."
As a black person myself this movie looks stupid as hell. It's like they're trying to be like Key and Peele, except those guys were actually funny.
RIght. This isn’t funny, it just feels bitter
Nothing is critic proof.
People thought that casting women in a Ghostbusters remake and accusing anyone who criticised it of sexism would make it critic proof. Evidently not.
Just think of any way a movie might theoretically be “critic proof”, it’s for the environment, it’s for God, some of the profits from the movie was gonna go to the McDonalds children's hospital, etc.
Then think of a movie that actually tried that.
It bombed, didn’t it?
yeah when i first saw the name i thought it was a joke or something and new it would be garbage
if i stood in the sun for 2 hours i would be darker than that guy.
When I first read the title, I thought this was gonna be a historical urban fantasy about a society of black people in the 1920s keeping magical things and creatures hidden from normal society and maybe they fight racism too. Granted I've never heard of this "trope" until just now. Comparing this premise to the fake premise I created in my head, I am severely disappointed.
The LP reference was jarring-not in a bad way; just super surprised. 😆 Was secretary of the LPNH a couple years back and the politics within the politics has given me LPPTSD.
The LP has an uphill battle they may never win, sadly. The principles are to mistrust central power, but in order to run a campaign and get people elected, the party itself needs some central power. It’s a bit of a contradiction. It doesn’t help that the most visible guy to the media is a dude wearing a rain boot on his head. Hahaha, I can understand the LPPTSD
