I think they can improve the characterization of the main 4 kid characters, but the actors themselves will be hard to beat (besides Ginny though I never know if that is the actress or just terrible writing for her). But the adult characters were all pretty much perfect and beautifully cast. Don't know how they can beat them. Dumbledore could be better, but every other adult character was excellent.

    • @hey_mickey1981
      @hey_mickey1981 Год назад +5

The cast was mostly great, not perfect. Even Alan Rickman, while his take on Snape was amazing they softened the character too much. It made everyone love him. Book Snape was much more reprehensible, which imho made his sacrifices all the more compelling. Plus he was way too old, which made them have to age up Harry’s parents. This made the tragedy of their young deaths (21) less impactful.
I think they have a lot of material and character development that can be fleshed out better in a tv series. But I’m not hopeful, I’ve been burned before. I’m looking at you Stephen King’s “The Stand” new tv series!

    • @wwpjd28
      @wwpjd28 Год назад +5

@@hey_mickey1981 I agree that a TV series could easily do a better job of character development than the movies. I don't really watch the movies. Every time I start, it gets me in the Harry Potter spirit with the cast and music and mood, and I just reread the books instead. They don't tell the story well to me. But I do think most of the actors did a fantastic job of bringing many of the characters (especially more of the side characters like Neville, Luna, McGonagall, etc.) to life. So many of the main characters are much deeper and richer in the books than in the movies and that could be done better in a TV show. But I have almost no faith in modern Hollywood to get it right, so I'm not eagerly anticipating this or anything. More likely, I'll check it out hoping to be positively surprised.

10:11 For me the biggest thing I LOATHED about the Last Airbender was the bending. In the show every movement did something and it made the fights look fantastical because no movement looked wasted. In The Last Airbender it's like the characters needed to do a bunch of otherwise pointless gestures just to get one thing to happen, like pressing a combo in a fighting game, it made all the Benders look like complete idiots who could probably get more done with regular weapons.

For instance in the 80s there were these Golan-Globus movies -- horribly cheaply made -- but some had good scripts and good ideas. Take those and just improve the parts that didn't work and call it something else. And you would have the core audience who did see the movie over the years.

With the nature of that world, the importance of the characters extreme appearances and depictions, and its magic, I think a more realistic computer animated style using modern technology like the new Unreal engine could be amazing. @@gregowen2022 It ruined an incredibly important plot point. The fact that Rand looks completely different than an otherwise very homogeneous isolated rural town has direct plot implications that made no sense in the show. The difference between how men and women use magic is also vital to the story. The showrunner either lied when he claimed to be a fan of the series, or he is too dumb to understand the world it is set in and why Robert Jordan set it up the way he did. I think that Disney’s 2016 live action remake of The Jungle Book (not to be confused with their 1998 live action remake of The Jungle Book) was decent as an adaptation of the book by Rudyard Kipling even though I greatly enjoy the 1967 cartoon. (I also like the Super Mario Brods animated movie but I didn’t see the 1993 original to compare). I have too many remakes I could complain about to list so I’ll just say the most recent one which is Pixar’s Lightyear which is essentially a remake of Buzz Lightyear of Star Command: The Adventure Begins and sacrificed pretty much everything that made the original film good.
I’m more ambivalent about the upcoming How To Train Your Dragon remake since (as much as I loved the animated movies) the HTTYD films aren’t loyal to the books by Cressida Cowell and I’d love to see Cowell’s actual Hiccup books adapted to the big screen but the statements that Universal is making sound more like they’re just planning to rehash the movies in live action (instead of re-adapting the same book.).

To be entirely fair, a lot of our so-called original films are actually remakes. Walt Disney’s Snow White was essentially an animated remake of the 1912 Snow White film. Also the 1939 Wizard of Oz was essentially a remake of the 1910 The Wizard of Oz (notwithstanding the book from 1900). In 2005, there was an animated movie called Ultimate Avengers and the 2012 Avengers movie ended up being extremely similar to it. I think the problem with modern remakes is less that they’re not original and more that they tend to be poorly done.

It has some good remake aspects: it has a reason to exist due to it being more loyal to the book than the 1971 film, it appropriately updates certain aspects, it does its own thing with the Wonka lore, and it gives a lot more insight into the Willy Wonka character. But despite that, it pales in comparison to the original, is very awkward in places, it doesn't have the iconic tunnel scene, and while Johnny Depp's Wonka has some fun moments, he's nowhere near on the level of Gene's. Essentially, Charlie is a remake that has enough positive and negative remake aspects to make a worthwhile film, but a neutral remake nonetheless.
Bad Remake: The Haunting (1999): Holy fuck this remake sucks. Like, a lot. The cast is decent, although why Owen Wilson is here I have no idea, but that's really it in terms of good aspects. The special effects are laughable, the plot is incredibly convoluted and stupid, the characters are bland and stupid, and the film turns this creepy horror into a weird message about family. It doesn't even justify itself considering there's a 1963 version that does it way better! An awful remake that serves no purpose other than to be mocked.

Don't wait! Let the Dune Part 1 review come out now! You aren't alone in having 'strong feelings' about it.
I think for me the easiest version of the 'bad adaptation' and 'good adaptation' game is TMNT. The original comic was fine, if not a little try-hard. The first animated show was a toy commercial in the best way - it wanted you to have a good time and then shell out a few dollars every time you went to a store to have part of that good time at home. So the first true adaptation in my opinion was the theatrical movie, which mixed elements of the two. It took the character work from the show and plunked them seamlessly into the world of the comic. The second animated show is neutral, because it basically wants to be anime but doesn't know how.
The 2012 series is possibly one of the best adaptations ever. It adjusts some ages so that relationships can become a primary focus as opposed to a thirty year old woman having teenage ninja pals, and it leans into some wonderful 50s and 60s sci-fi vibes and tropes. What does mutagen do? Whatever makes this story entertaining, that's what. If you haven't seen any of it check out a Season 3 episode called "In Dreams". You don't have to watch anything else to appreciate this episode, I assure you. And then the newest animated show is in the bad category, for many reasons.
I can't wait to see your take on anime. One of the big reasons it is so important to people is that it takes a story that would be difficult if not impossible to tell in live action and gives it life. Here are a couple that might be up your alley:
Serial Experiments Lain - a young girl starts to realize technology may not be what she thinks it is while struggling with the way people treat her - as if they haven't all met the same girl.
Rahxephon - a survivor of a nuclear war learns his entire life is a lie, and struggles between taking control of it or living the way he wants to. This takes the mecha genre and turns it on its head with the machines being either mechanical or organic. Episode 19 has an amazing gut punch.
Noir - a professional assassin meets a much younger assassin with ties to her past and tries to unravel the mystery of their connection. Uses slowly expanding flashbacks and an amazing score to create an an amazing atmosphere.
Gasaraki - two companies use different methods to create the weapons of tomorrow: one uses information and the other uses mystical secrets of their past.
Flag - after taking a picture during a revolt a journalist is moved to the front lines of a vicious war in order to document one side's struggle. Made as a quasi-documentary: every shot is either through a camera, a computer screen, or something like it.
Key The Metal Idol - a robot is told by her dying grandfather that to avoid shutting down she must make 30,000 friends to become human. Wherever you think this story is going - it isn't.
Sword of the Stranger - a simple story told well about a samurai being forced to break his vow to never draw his blade again.
Twelve Kingdoms - a girl is pulled into a fantastical world where her modern sensibilities both help and hinder her attempts to survive.
ACCA: 13-Territory Inspection - an inspector travels to the thirteen states of his nation and investigates a potential coup.
Flowers of Evil - a story about a boy who gets caught doing something deviant and is blackmailed over it. The show is live action but then rotoscoped and made in a way to get deep under your skin.

There is a place for some remakes I would really love to see a version of the last starfighter done with today's technology I liked that story back in the day I thought it was a really cool premise. But for the most part I wish Hollywood would remove its head from its sphincter and get back to the business of being entertaining. starting with offering the people out there with exciting new ideas and stories to have their day in the sun. I am convinced that if Hollywood really cast its net out there, they would find new equivalents to the franchises and ideas they are obliterating through over use.

FF7R is the remake that really grinds my gears. I know some people don't think a remake should exist unless your bringing something new to the project, but for me what I want from a game remake IS that game, remade. Not some abomination using the cultural cache that name brings on a altered story. The only new thing I want brought to the table is the new and better technology to better realize the original vision. For a good example of this see the recent System Shock remake. That was exactly what I wanted.
In movies its a bit harder for me. Like I don't like all the Disney live action remakes, not because they are the same or different, but just because they aren't as good as the original in any way. But other movies get remade all the time. Like the Italian Job or Ocean's 11 or Godzilla, or Peter Jackson's LOTR. And I am fine with those and really enjoy some of them. So it's a bit more grey for me in that area.
I guess for movies I do expect something new or better, but for games I just want what was old, MADE new.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake is a really interesting take on a quote-on-quote “Remake,” because they end up changing a bit of plot points from the 97 original while still following a similar structure. It makes old fans of the og hyped because they still get some of their favorite moments transformed from polygons to beautiful CG gameplay, and all the while it’s not a carbon copy. The suspense it’s produced since Remake’s ending and Rebirth’s (Part 2’s) trailers showing new and exciting possibilities makes it such a unique and interesting take on a Remake. I always argue. There are only three reasons to do a remake.
The first is that it is some kind of timeless story play Robin Hood, and there is a new take you can use.
The second is that movie technology has advanced. They were silent that they had it sound, so OK will remake things that were done silent. They added color baby hey with 3-D or CGI it’s worth taking another shot of something.
The laughs is that it’s a story that is sad, or was that contemporaneously, but actual technology has changed. So can we have the same general idea of a murder mystery that hinges on there being a party line, which nobody under the age of 40 knows what the heck that is. So if you have a murder mystery that is based around the fact that nobody had cell phones and now you have to accounts for that it could work.

So I'm surprised you actually didn't mention this one. By far the best remake I have ever seen/played is the Dead Space remake.
The original game already was one of the most terrifying and absolute best horror games I have ever played. Which set the bar really really high for the remake.
Which is why going into it I was very cautious if not a little skeptical. And then come to find out EA crushed it.
The visuals for the game are absolutely stunning. The gameplay not only feels like the original but it also feels like they smoothed out some of the original's kinks. They expanded the story to be much more immersive and give you a wider breadth of what's going on in universe. They redesigned old mini games in the game and is so much better and more fun challenges for the player to overcome. Mechanics in the game were improved all around. The remake not only paid homage to the original but improved upon it in almost every single way. And was absolutely exceptional.
The one thing that still bugs me to this day, is there was a jump scare in the original that occurred in a very specific place. You go into and out of this place all the time, and the original devs specifically waited until you got comfortable in this place and thought it was safe before they hit you with this jump scare. Which then turns into about a 5 minute adrenaline dump of pure frantic button mashing, followed by never trusting this place ever again. Meaning every time you go back into it you are always being extra aware and extra cautious to make sure it never happens again.
For those of you who played the original, you know exactly what I'm talking about. That specific scare scared the s*** out of me.
I don't know if the devs did it on purpose, or if I just so happen to get lucky, but that jump scare never happened in the remake. And I spent the entirety of my playthrough, on hard difficulty waiting for it to happen. So much so, that the further I got into my playthrough, the more anxious I got in this place, and it was really messing with my head. Using the tension created by that point, either knowingly or unknowingly, to allow for the rest of the ambience to work so well, is either a master stroke or some of the shearest dumbest luck I have ever seen.
And despite what I've posted here, I do not have the words to fully give the remake justice. You have to play it yourself. And I cannot recommend it enough.

It had set up a new, completely fresh story that still stayed true to the original, with better cinematography and effects which make this my favourite horror movie of all time
In terms of video games: Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2:
It had kept elements from the original game that were beloved while still making this a brand new story.
These are what remakes are missing, instead of just focusing on new stuff to make it hip, you need to study the original Adaption, see what worked and try to creative something original using what worked from the previous Adaption as a sort of blueprint

The issue with remakes is that the fail state isn't simply when it's worse than the original, but when it ultimately is no different from the original. With the phrase "Remake," there comes some expectations; most of which are reasonable. The expectation that trumps them all is basically this: "what did they fix? What did they improve? Is it better than the original?" Simply put: if it isn't better than how we made it before, then outside of accessibility, what is the point?
One good remake I can list, outside of Demon's Souls, was MediEvil on PS4. The older one was a pretty big adbenture game where you play the boneheaded knight Sir Daniel as he tries to earn the glory he unjustifiably earned in life when he rises from the grave. The new one has a myriad of little touches that has many good effects and improvements that go a long way. Plus, the game allows you to play the PS1 original as one of a few 100% completion rewards.
Another good remake was Pokémon Mystery Dungeon DX. I grew up with Blue Team on DS and checked out DX after finding out that it was a full 3D remake of both Red and Blue Team with the amenities of the future titles. And found that out the fun way: trying the demo. Still got your avatar pokemon through a series of questions, new areas for friend maps, new missions, new items and evolutions; the whole 9 yards. Childhood me was ecstatic seeing his childhood favorite remade for modern consoles, even if the levels were MUCH easier than what I remembered (one place had 99 floors, reduced to I think 20.)
One I found neutral was the Mass Effect Legendary Collection. I am a humongous fan of Mass Effect, with the political intrigue, strangely realistic approach to human-alien relations, Lovecraftian Horror, and whatnot. When LC came out, many new things were added, like a proper integration of Weapons and Armor packs as things you purchase with in-game currency or resources like everything else. But the things removed, like the Outpost DLC, kinda bummed me; alongside how the overall difficukty was toned down after they buffered the gameplay. The biggest drawback was what they kept, like the painfully stupid ending and over-explaining of Mass Effect 3's Reapers. Or the painfully... uh... "CoD: Ghosts" the story was in ME3 what with the canyon sized plotholes. Still though, fun gameplay and Citadel was such a good sendoff... exceot for the arena removal.
A bad one in video games... hoo boy, where to look. Well, there's Last of Us pt.1 remake with Microsoft Paint graphics design, Bombermam Zero that took a cutesy bomber guy and made it edgier than the Late 90's; or Bionic Commando which did the same thing with an infinitely dumber story and twist (Two Words: Wife Arm), or what about Prince of Persia 2008 where the ending was hidden behind a no-longer-accessible DLC. The list goes on and I'm terrified to know that it won't end.
Though, the idea of remakes isn't inherently bad or toxic. For example, I'm hoping Todd Howard will let Obsidian do a full top-down remake of Fallout New Vegas with Fallout 4's engine, so that we can get to see all the things they wanted to add but couldn't. Normally the reason why would be taking 5 years ir whatever, but FNV had 18 months of development and it showed, hard. I'd honestly love to see the full Vegas Strip or see all of what Obsidian wanted.
I'd even love a modern remake of Deus Ex or Omikron: The Nomad Soul for modern consoles. Keep the story and mechanics, but upgrade the visuals and audio. Then again, without David Bowie, Omikron will never have a true remake.

@@UniqueLove32 - You're welcome! I'm glad you appreciate it. Most people don't even want to know about the machinations of the industry. It's too uncomfortable for most.
      Have a great weekend 🌞!

    I really liked:
The Mark of Zorro (1940). A remake of the movie with the same name from 1920.
For a Fistful of Dollars (1964). A remake of Yojimbo (1961).
    And, of course:
Star Wars (1977). A remake of The Hidden Fortress (1958).
Remakes are nothing new, we're just more aware of the bad ones now.

Yeah, so many modern action movies have their roots in Kurosawa. He's like a trope unto himself.

Don't forget The Magnificant Seven, which is a remake of Seven Samurai.

Resident evil 2 and 4 remakes are pretty darn good examples for video games

Funny how people usually say third time the charm. The. RE3 remake was a disaster, yet RE4 which is the number of death and misfortune became one of the best game of all time… again

It would be fine so long as they keep their heads in the game.
I only know enough to make that one joke

Remakes that I love and adore: Resident Evil 1 & 2, John Carpenter's The Thing, N. Sane Trilogy, Demon's Souls, Shadow Of The Colossus, Nier Replicant version blah blah blah number sequence 😅.
Remakes that make me seeth with anger: FINAL FANTASY VII (YOU COULD'VE BEEN PERFECT DAMN IT YOU SHOWED THAT BUT YOU THREW IT ALL AWAY!!!!😅)

It’s more of an adaptation than a true remake, but the Assassin’s Creed movie is the only film I’ve ever walked out on.

I am very picky about remakes for obvious reasons 😑 I think one that stands out is actually the first jumanji remake, mainly because it didn’t mimic the original, it took the concept of a cursed game and said “well, what would this sentient game do now?” Video games! It was a fun time and didn’t try to copy the tone because it followed an adventure video game tone instead. Overall it just rolled with an interesting concept and told a fun story, so I was pleasantly surprised. As for least favorites, pretty much any and all post 2020, and all useless Disney remakes

Jumanji was such a great concept. They could have redone the original but with better CGI, and I agree, the decision to move forward and ask “what next” was the right call

    M. Night Shamalan must be insane, because he truly thought his film version of TLA is superior to the show😢

I take issue with your Dune comment. The Last time Dune was made was in 2000 on the Sci-fi channel and condlsiderinf the budget it was pretty darn good as miniseries and the sorce material go.
