Mindy Kaling's idea of house renovation is removing all the 4th walls in the building......
Open (mind) concept
And using a jackhammer on the foundations.
Having every fourth wall in your house removed is crazy 😅
I really like what you said here.
Creatives remove fourth walls. Hacks liked her only think they did.
So I worked on Velma and let me answer your questions! You're right - the studio almost always orders 2 seasons of animated stuff at once since that's cheapest, so Velma was going to get a second season no matter what. Then, we had 3 (YES THREE) art directors, and a host of in-house animators, which is why it looks so good. Unfortunately, the writers and head creatives (MK and team) were still the same so despite the massive re-writes we went through to try and mitigate the backlash, we still got.....this. Soooo much time in animatic reviews was put into "pumping up" the jokes. Let me tell you, it was a STRUGGLE to get through for me. The amazing production crew was the only reason I was able to bear it.
I hope people don’t criticize the production teams. It’s never their fault. Thanks for the insight.
@@misanthropicservitorofmars2116 Work is work for production teams, they got a gig, best to see it through so you get your paycheck. Now if someone on staff takes to social media and attacks those criticizing the finished product, well you made yourself open season to be criticized yourself.
Back on topic, I often feel bad for many of the production staff on these projects, and try not to lump them in with the writers or head producers usually pushing the agenda-driven BS that makes shows like Velma so awful. Not everyone working on these shows has a say in things, and they're just there to animated a scene, make sure the script revisions are handed out, and whatever other behind-the-scenes task is on their job listing.
I have to say, the animation, illumination, photography... looks good. If only the writing was that good...
@@XenoJehuty84 exactly what I try to do. Separate the workers from the creatives. I base my understanding of the industry on the Behind the Scenes content from The Lord of the Rings extended edition DVD special features.
It’s so in depth, it’s like 10 hours of behind the scenes content. I’ve watched that since I was a teen. That’s where I learned how creatives and workers can work together towards a common goal.
It also taught me why some things are bad. Because the creatives and workers don’t have the same motivations towards the project.
if you’re not under nda you should do a tell all or q&a
Scrappy-doo has slain the beast at the cost of his own life. EVERYONE needs to apologize to him.
F IN THE CHAT FOR SCRAPPY
Imagine creating a show so awful that it redeemed Scrappy-Doo.
Now we just need Velma to open the Lament Configuration...
@@stevenedwards8353Somebody better call the Ghostbusters. Or John Constantine. Or Shio Akai for all I care.
We need the supernatural menace that is Velma contained.

So they cancelled animated shows Close Enough, Infinity Train, and the revival of The Boondocks that were achieving success, and we're served shit like Velma.
They fired Henry Cavill. Disney seems set on immolation. They are doing a Superman and the actor looks bored.
Go figure.
Boondocks without Granddad would probably be depressing.
They got rid of Our Flag Means Death, too, which was one of the best shows in a generation, easy.
Velma is “safe edgy” with a Scooby Doo skin.
Oh my god, you've actually discribed what most shows are nowadays! "Safe Edgy" is what I would discribe the likes of the vast majority of mass media!
I wouldn't call it "safe" edgy. It's more like "woke" edgy.
Hazbin hotel is safe edgy
Velma is woke edgy
Woke edgy and safe edgy and great ways to put this stuff. I would add “approved edgy” to the mix. The funny part is that these folks have deluded themselves into thinking they actually ARE edgy and clever, instead of the NPCs they are
More like "Wedgie"
I still can't believe they wrote if someone is having a panic attack you should kiss them.
Well it doesnt fall far from Mindy mindset given her track record of kissing people without their consent
It’s not assault if it’s good politics! Lol
@@gregowen2022 It's not assault if a woman does it! sigh
I can't believe Puss in Boots wrote a better scene about what to do in a panic attack.
They're exactly the type of people good parents tell their kids to stay away from.
Also, I blame Guardians of the Galaxy and Deadpool for popularizing the metahumor BS.
When everyone is Deadpool, no one is.
At least the first two were tasteful with it. Deadpool has a point to the humor and the action is almost Jack Sparrow esque where theirs a method to the madness and a space available for the serious moments. Guardians of the Galaxy is basically a Buddy Cop movie in Space and does it well. Then theirs Velma where it’s “humor” is mean spirited and it’s 4th wall breaks only exist to be even more mean spirited, in short Velma is a show with hate flowing through its veins rather than blood
This is so real even in the comics deadpoop being a wacky guy making pop culture references was good in the begging but then they after did and lost its charm
I blame Family Guy more on that than Deadpool or Guardians.
And when everyone's super... no one will be.
Remember when DC tried to make Harley Quinn a Deadpool stand-in? Pepperidge Farms remembers.
I salute you for having to watch through that 2 seasons of abomination.
His next challenge is to watch that Good Times cartoon. Imma say RIP in advance
I assumed Season 2 was already greenlit. I always assumed the entertainment industry is just really insular, and a lot of these progressive/woke/whatever you wanna call them shows are funded because the creators are just well connected and the studios want content.
Well we can hope this will put her so deep into the negative territory on ratings and profits she will be stuck doing a podcast.
I do think this might be a push over the edge for Mindy. She was a darling in Hollywood after the Office, but her other projects have been mid to poor.
Is it meta or postmodern that everyone in Hollywood seems to hate everything about Hollywood while working in Hollywood? Or more simple version: Why do people who clearly HATE everything Hollywood has ever made keep re-making old IP for fans (presumably to make money), only to then show contempt for that IP and its fans (costing them money)? MAKE THIS MAKE CENTS!
I will try my best to answer it. Ego and victimhood, they think they are the smartest most talented people out there, everything and everyone before is below them. Then there is the factor of crying that they are oppressed. These 2 things is to take old IPs and alter them to be better and inclusive yada yada. As for hoe they get away with this, the stufio executives dont even care of fathom with what is made, they only see numbers, and think that because what was made in the past was successful, they should remake them over and over because thats what numbers said worked. And think that because the loud “oppressed” like the twitter people make up the majority of people, they think putting them in charge will make them money, and cant fathom why its not working cus they dont have passion. I hope this helped summarize it
It's all about destroying culture and remaking it in their own image. It was never about profit, it's all purely political.
Because recognizable IPs are useful skin suits when you're trying to insert your political ideology into everything and have trouble gaining an audience on your own original merits. It's the spoonful of sugar to make the medicine go down.
Because they’re narcissistic and self-loathing at the same time. They worship themselves and detest you for not doing the same. It reminds them of the fact they’re not gods. They hate that they’re completely replaceable and it’s the IP’s that have loyal fans. They are so self-absorbed that they can’t see anything greater or worth more attention and admiration than themselves and so the fact we don’t mindlessly applaud every IP simply because they have inserted themselves in it fills them with rage. So out of spite they seek to destroy the IP’s we love while continuously deluding themselves THIS time they will receive the love they deserve for doing so.. rinse and repeat.
Really simple. They don't want to be there.
These guys probably grew up watching the big screen with stars in their eyes about making their own mind-blowing and fantastic stories that audiences the world over would love them for and shower their creations with adulation from now until the end of time. One English degree later, they're stuck in a Hollywood writer room sweatshop working on Popular IP Sequel number 2300 because execs are terrified of anything original and their hopes and dreams of creating their own amazing work dies an inglorious death.
So they take out that frustration on the show, either merely using the name to write the show they ACTUALLY wanted to write or shitting on the thing that supposedly stole their hopes and dreams from them.
I could have written a better pitch
Scooby doo gang in college for more adult setting
the gang will invest a cult that's using college students as human sacrifices and seek to use them to stir up chaos
Fred is a himbo who's lost his parents to said cult as they were mystery solvers, but his uncle wants Fred to not do that out of fear of losing his nephew like he did his brother (to keep the Jones name)
Daphne is a rich, girly girl fashionista who dresses to kickass like early 2000s Kim Possible, Totally Spies girlboss characters. But make her mad and she'll kill you in 5 seconds
Velma is an adorkable, always curious girl who wants to find proof in the mythical and unknown plus she's gay but done in a better way than Mindy
Shaggy is the skillmonkey who got into a lot of clubs and activities and likes mystery solving because he wants a journalist degree, so he's the up to date, pop cultured one. A user of most but master of none
Scooby... there's a mystery to him
See! Now this is a show I would want to watch.
@@ExiletheJedi this shows the wrong people are running Hollywood and it's up to us to fix it

It’s crazy to think that dragon ball z abridged, a parody show made by like 4 guys in the late 2000s is better written than this.
It helps that those 4 guys 1) *loved* the source material 2) understood the strengths of the original 3) are actually funny.

It definitely missed her face.
You're absolutely right about context being the lynchpin for stupid jokes. I think if Velma's overall tone had been friendly, upbeat, and NOT actively crapping on anyone who isn't female, gay, or any race other than white, the stupid meta jokes might've come across as at least a little endearing, if not full-on funny. But yeah, you get what you give, and if the foundation of your show is anger and spite, that's exactly what the audience is going to give back. You'd think that would be fairly obvious, since the main function of humor is to make other people laugh and feel at ease, two things which really can't coincide with rage and frustration. Anyways, God bless you for suffering through this mess for our sakes. If nothing else, we're all learning a valuable lesson about what NOT to do when writing a comedy.
I don't remember who it was, but some standup comic was talking about how you can be an "angry comic" and still be funny, but the anger part can never hit 50% or more - at that point you're just a guy on stage ranting at an audience who occasionally says something amusing. IIRC the example of a guy who tipped too far into the anger was Lewis Black - his popularity started to peter out because he got way more angry than funny, and audiences don't respond to that.
Hard to be funny when the show is actively seething with hate. I saw the clips, they are actively mean-spirited. She took a children cartoon I watched as a small kid and transformed it into something violent and political. This is her fantasy? Make Scrappy tear people to shreds and make forced political commentary? She is sad and intellectually impotent.
Deadpool's whole thing is that he knows he's in a comic-book/movie/whatever. He knows about the metaverse. That's always been who he is. Everyone tries to do 4th wall shit, but it's part of Deadpool's DNA.
Yeah, it contributes to other characters thinking that Deadpool is nuts (to be fair, he is…) when he references them being in a comic. It works for him not only because it is a part of who he is, but also because it affects how other characters see him and react to him. Being meta like that is funny for him because it isn’t done just to seem oh-so clever, but to emphasize how randomly crazy he is to others around him. It’s the only way he can get away with doing it so much.
Velma thinks it soooo clever, but doesn’t realize that meta humor has to be applied with precision in order to hit the mark and actually be funny. Otherwise, the jokes just take the reader or watcher out of the story for no reason other than to say “hey, see that? I’m clever-funny. Haha!” 🙄
@@tahlia__nerds_out Velma doesn't understand how to be funny at all.
Unfortunately it isn't all that funny most of the time.
There's more to wit than just pointing out a cliche and expecting people to laugh at it as you unironically follow every cliche in the book
@@jeremyallen5974 I mean, he has been doing it for over 30 years, so it's bound to be stale at some point.
Nah. Before that, it was a blink and miss it joke. Most of Deadpool's humor was more dark and morbid and the whole point was the redemption of a horrible mercenary. Post 2008, Marvel passed Wade over to writers who know jack shit about it and we get memes rather than character. The movies disappointed me since for all the boasting about R rating, they are too pussified to adapt Wade's meaner and more unsettling aspects.... also he is supposed to sound like a gravelly Dennis Leary, make of that what you will.
Disparu has also been making a killing off Velma, even if I found him via Rings of Power. (I tried to watch his Willow reviews, but I have no investment in Willow.) I actually found Greg via the decline of the MCU. I do like how Mauler essentially created a new RUclips genre, as he admitted to being unhappy with the current state of media discourse and set about changing it himself. He sure did...
...Oh, sorry, were we talking about Velma? I didn't care enough, so I commented on something I found more interesting.

I didn't even know it had a chance for a second season.
Tv show contracts, especially these animated shows, usually include 2-3 seasons guaranteed. Unfortunately.

Simply, Contracts. Most Animation under WB get 2 seasons, look at most others and you'll see the same thing.
So why wasn't it cancelled like, say Batgirl, well Batgirl got Tax Write Offs, which made it worth doing that, while I assume what ever Write of they could get for the show isn't worth what it would take to break the contract.
He says that in the video bro?
Guys, please stop hate-watching series you don't like & just let people like Greg to give you the lowdown instead
If I could make a Scooby-Doo series it would be early in their travels; just out of high school, taking a break before college by buying an old van and going off to see America; small town America. The Mystery Machine logo would be slapped on in the last episode of the first season.
Scooby-Doo: American Road Trip.
One of the few times meta jokes work at all for me is Community, Abed rules.
They definitely can work, and Community is extremely clever. It’s just a difference of skill, and Mindy has none
I appreciate the fact that not only do you have the stomach to watch a second season of this diarrhea, but that you can joke about it as you analyse what you watched. Some of your quips had me laughing. Great video, Greg.
Velma is so 'woke' it does literally the opposite of what they are trying to do
The show feels as if it was written by ultra-conservatives as a strawman of what they think "progressives" are like or speak... and then you look at who wrote the scripts and realize:
1. Mindy Kaling is just a uncreative hack with her head firmly up her own arrogant ass, who has never heard of the "Mary-Sue character checklist" and why you should avoid them (esp self-insert Mary-Sues)
2. it's just hypocrisy, utter lack of self-awareness and preachiness, all the worst attributes of the self-congratulatory postmodern "woke" crowd
3. she thinks "crass" equals "humour" or "witty" as if she's a 12 year old teen boy
Greg, you are one of few youtubers I actually pull up this website to see. Aside from your dastardly dad jokes and well thought out commentary, your clip selection makes me chuckle on the inside. Thank you, have a great day!
I didn't even know Velma Season 2 came out 💀They REALLY did not want to bring back any attention to this trainwreck of a show
Alright guys we need to stop with making scrappy doo as some boogy man or joke to make fun of lets bring him back like a actually character and part of the crew
Scrappy doo did nothing wrong
Shows like this are why so many people were saying things like "bring on the AI overlords" and "they want to be paid more for THIS?!" when the Hollywood Writer's strike was going on. Which isn't entirely fair- there are still some good writers working for entertainment, and plenty of others in the salt mines trying to make scripts like "Velma" into something that doesn't make teeth grind and ears bleed. But unless someone stops lousy misanthropes like Kaling from getting these vanity projects greenlit in the first place...
“Maybe solving mysteries with dogs is a mistake.”
Yeah… the problem with that “joke” is that it doesn’t work well with with normal dogs. Scooby was basically a dog with a human brain. He had the capabilities of a dog with the intelligence of a human not to fuck things up badly like eating the evidence. He could probably sniff things out at least or dig things up.
There will be 4th wall jokes in Deadpool, because that's literally a part of his character and always have been, rather than just poor writing.
The show that made your channel famous decided to make a sequel, yeah Hollywood is screwed.
"If she didn't make this lemon, then I wouldn't be here making lemonade " - love it.
Thanks bro your deco is pretty lit also
I genuinly believe they were halfway into the production process when some higher up realized this would flop. Then they noticed some similarities with the scooby doo cast and maybe made some color changes to write it off as scooby doo

This is just a rumor but hbo ordered 20 episodes and broke it up into 2 seasons and Mindy and her writer Charles grandy were booted from WB’s writers pool during the Hollywood strikes. Also most creators on RUclips saw through the hate watch bs and “engagement” approach (*see Parrot Analytics). Dude! Rubber is awesome 🤣 I do wish they went crazier with that movie.
It is so funny to me that the ones writing and directing these “down with the rich, capitalism sucks!” stories are usually part of the clique they claim to dislike. It has such a “How do you do, fellow poor/comrade?” vibe to it all.
Why can’t creators just create something that’s fun and brings joy to people? On what plane of exist do they occupy that they think taking a beloved family franchise, turning it into a mean spirited convoluted mess with unnecessary blood and sex jokes, and then insulting the people who rightfully call out their incompetence will make their ‘creation’ a success? Forgot the straw-man religious cope, THEY’RE the ones on something much, much, much stronger.
Regarding Fred ‘joining’ the Church, I’m already wondering about several things cause I can’t help it. For one, has he gone through the Sacraments of initiation yet? Or at least has Baptism as a baseline? If not, he would have to take classes or have a discussion with the parish priest to get that ball rolling on becoming a member. He also wouldn’t be required to tithe (giving % of income) with most parishes as they operate more on a charity basis.
If he’s not wanting to fully commit just yet (which some people do), then why is he wearing a priest collar? One doesn’t get to wear that until they complete their seminarian studies, which takes years on its own and to begin one must usually go through a long discernment process. And there’s no guarantee one can even get into seminary. If he’s into being a Catholic for a bit, why not go for a monk or friar look with the full robes and cords? Way more distinct and could probably be more humorous. Such as claiming he’s a Jedi monk and pulls out random weapons from his robes, wearing a bald cap, or something more amusing.
Also, does he start carrying around stacks of prayer cards, Rosaries, holy water, medals, scapulars, mini statues, etc? Cause that is an issue with some Catholics thinking that the sacramentals themselves are ‘good luck’ charms, and gang members are known to wear scapulars and rosaries thinking it will keep them out of hell (side note: it doesn’t). Could have added on to the monk/friar gag where he pulls random things out of his robe all the time, and even he is shocked at what he finds sometimes. Just saying, there’s way cooler Catholic drip they could have gone for that’s more interesting than a black shirt and collar.
Yeah, yeah I know the whole gag is meant to be ‘funny’ and all that, but a joke should at least have a proper set up. Also, Thomas Aquinas, Fr. Georges Lemaître, Nicolaus Copernicus, Fr. Johann Mendel, John Henry Newman, and quite a many others would like to show how silly “the Church doesn’t require me to think” mindset actually is.
You put more thought into this than the writing team 😂.
@@gamingforever9121 haha well I do know the subject decently well since I’m a practicing Catholic myself, and make jokes with my friends all the time about it. Part of a good joke set up is knowing the subject matter.
I remember a speaker saying he hung out with some nuns one afternoon, and quite a few times they would talk with someone and all of a sudden they would be passing around prayer cards to them to help with an issue they were having. Guy said it was something like “ninjas pulling out shurikens from their robes. Where did those cards even come from? The second season was already in the show's contract. It wasn't revived.
And yet, Fred might be the best character of the show
As a manchild, I love the idea of an adult-oriented Scooby-Doo. Velma is the worst possible implementation of it. The live-action movie from 2002 did the sardonic parody approach better, as did the TV special "Night of the Living Doo". The TV show Scooby-Doo: Mystery Incorporated, while still being for kids, did the "serialized relationship approach" better. I wish they gave Velma's creative freedom to those guys, or other people who love the franchise.
DeadPool is going to be the stick that finally breaks the genre's back for good. Not even an aging Ryan Reynolds can save it at this point.
With garbage like "Velma" produced in America, it's no wonder that Anime is kicking our creative asses...

@@hidebehind3565 I don’t actually have an opinion. I just pointed out that your opinion doesn’t resonate with most people to the point where people couldn’t even tell what opinion you had.
@@gonzotown9438 I'm just kidding with you by claiming you're a stalinist. I know that you have no idea who Marx is, you wouldn't say that stuff if you had. And if you don't even know who Marx is, you are not the target audience of my comment or even the joke in the video.
@@hidebehind3565 sure I know who Marx is. Groucho was hilarious.
