Because recognizable IPs are useful skin suits when you're trying to insert your political ideology into everything and have trouble gaining an audience on your own original merits. It's the spoonful of sugar to make the medicine go down.
Because they’re narcissistic and self-loathing at the same time. They worship themselves and detest you for not doing the same. It reminds them of the fact they’re not gods. They hate that they’re completely replaceable and it’s the IP’s that have loyal fans. They are so self-absorbed that they can’t see anything greater or worth more attention and admiration than themselves and so the fact we don’t mindlessly applaud every IP simply because they have inserted themselves in it fills them with rage. So out of spite they seek to destroy the IP’s we love while continuously deluding themselves THIS time they will receive the love they deserve for doing so.. rinse and repeat.
Really simple. They don't want to be there. These guys probably grew up watching the big screen with stars in their eyes about making their own mind-blowing and fantastic stories that audiences the world over would love them for and shower their creations with adulation from now until the end of time. One English degree later, they're stuck in a Hollywood writer room sweatshop working on Popular IP Sequel number 2300 because execs are terrified of anything original and their hopes and dreams of creating their own amazing work dies an inglorious death. So they take out that frustration on the show, either merely using the name to write the show they ACTUALLY wanted to write or shitting on the thing that supposedly stole their hopes and dreams from them.
You're absolutely right about context being the lynchpin for stupid jokes. I think if Velma's overall tone had been friendly, upbeat, and NOT actively crapping on anyone who isn't female, gay, or any race other than white, the stupid meta jokes might've come across as at least a little endearing, if not full-on funny. But yeah, you get what you give, and if the foundation of your show is anger and spite, that's exactly what the audience is going to give back. You'd think that would be fairly obvious, since the main function of humor is to make other people laugh and feel at ease, two things which really can't coincide with rage and frustration. Anyways, God bless you for suffering through this mess for our sakes. If nothing else, we're all learning a valuable lesson about what NOT to do when writing a comedy.
I don't remember who it was, but some standup comic was talking about how you can be an "angry comic" and still be funny, but the anger part can never hit 50% or more - at that point you're just a guy on stage ranting at an audience who occasionally says something amusing. IIRC the example of a guy who tipped too far into the anger was Lewis Black - his popularity started to peter out because he got way more angry than funny, and audiences don't respond to that.
Hard to be funny when the show is actively seething with hate. I saw the clips, they are actively mean-spirited. She took a children cartoon I watched as a small kid and transformed it into something violent and political. This is her fantasy? Make Scrappy tear people to shreds and make forced political commentary? She is sad and intellectually impotent.

It’s crazy to think that dragon ball z abridged, a parody show made by like 4 guys in the late 2000s is better written than this.
It helps that those 4 guys 1) *loved* the source material 2) understood the strengths of the original 3) are actually funny.
@@dancedancelaurenyeah pretty much
Sentient tire sploding peoples' heads.
You sold me on checking the film out with that.
Just remember, evil cannot create only corrupt and distort what good people have created
I agree, but you could change the word “evil” to the words “modern Hollywood“ and it would still be accurate
My theory is this is an exercise in banking a turd 💩 to later delete it for a depreciation tax write off down the line, when needed.
"If she didn't make this lemon, then I wouldn't be here making lemonade " - love it.
I appreciate the fact that not only do you have the stomach to watch a second season of this diarrhea, but that you can joke about it as you analyse what you watched. Some of your quips had me laughing. Great video, Greg.

Wow, I'm only half a million dollars below the average worth of someone my age. Yay being 36 and poor...
I often wonder why people like Mindy don't attempt to make fun of other religions.... oh nvm, I know why. 😉
You can pretty much only make fun of two religions these days.
Satanism, Gnostic wokeism, and Mystery Babylon don't make fun of themselves. They only attack Jesus Christ.
@@SamtheBravesFan what's the second? Scientology? If not I guess that makes 3 lol
Catholicism is the number approved punching bag. Funny that she was raised a Hindu and had the insider knowledge to poke at it expertly, but chose a different route.
@@gregowen2022 Nope, it is Hollywood Baby. Catholicism and Protestantism. I am even surprised in mean spiritedly going after Catholics. Since WASP is a thing.
Your face paralysis wink wink at the camera everytime they make a dumb reference to Scooby Doo is killing me
I didn't even know Velma Season 2 came out 💀They REALLY did not want to bring back any attention to this trainwreck of a show
One of the few times meta jokes work at all for me is Community, Abed rules.
They definitely can work, and Community is extremely clever. It’s just a difference of skill, and Mindy has none
This show makes me want to watch the ACTUAL Scooby-Doo again. Enjoy the near-immortality of content from the 2010s and before.
I’m still under the Hex Girls spell. Aside from the drummer, she was kinda fugly
The live action movie was a gem 💎
@@NetBattlerin what world is that true? The live action was terrible. You want a good Scooby-Doo movie, then you've gotta watch Zombie Island

There will be 4th wall jokes in Deadpool, because that's literally a part of his character and always have been, rather than just poor writing.
That clip of Nacho Libre reminded me of one of my favorite lines from it that sounds appropriate to this review: "Do you not realize I have had diarrhea since Easters?"
HERE WE GO!!!!!!!!!!
Guys, please stop hate-watching series you don't like & just let people like Greg to give you the lowdown instead
I genuinly believe they were halfway into the production process when some higher up realized this would flop. Then they noticed some similarities with the scooby doo cast and maybe made some color changes to write it off as scooby doo
"Why was this Greenlight when it Season 1 sucked."
Simply, Contracts. Most Animation under WB get 2 seasons, look at most others and you'll see the same thing.
So why wasn't it cancelled like, say Batgirl, well Batgirl got Tax Write Offs, which made it worth doing that, while I assume what ever Write of they could get for the show isn't worth what it would take to break the contract.
He says that in the video bro?
As a woke person i apologize for this shows existence. I truly am sorry to every living being who sat during this crap. Its a hateful show made by someone with clear insecurities.
for 6:33 I get being nervous about deadpool being meta, but there is a significant difference there, deadpool has *always* been that way even in his original comics, he was designed to be marvels edgy meta comedy anti hero, and velma is just mindy's self insert OC disguised as an already well established character.
7:24 Glenn Howerton deserved better
why are we hate watching it again
I dont hate watch. Anyone who does clearly has nothing better to do. These shows are made for them lol. They are the target audience
Just watching the reviews
I couldn’t even make it through the first episode. It’s so painfully bad.
They made Thorn from the Hex Girls look like a meth addict fresh out of rehab. WHY!
Because she was a hot woman... and we all know ugly women can't stand that
Because we can't have nice things.
hi Greg. First time viewer. Love the video. Thanks for complementing my interior design. I’ve actually worked really hard at it.
I am so here for the Jenna Marbles reference!!! Well played sir!!! 😂😂
im a regular tumblr user and i promisee you. every tumblr rant is 100 times better than this show.
Yeah i checked out the 1st couple of episodes of season 1 and my word. I’ll never get that time or my brain cells it dissolved back.
I’m glad you stopped when you did. The effects can be permanent with something this bad. But I’m glad you came here, instead!
The new Deadpool looks like the person you broke up with for GOOD reasons, and went back out with them after some time, only to realize “oh yeah, we broke up for a GOOD reason”.
6:37 Liefield? The artist?
Can we get a show that’s just the equivalent of rich people hunger games? Cuz we know they would fight each other for the billions of others.
Half the time I watch your vids just because I love your pro youtube moves. You never fail to make me laugh with them.
Yes. RE: Deadpool concern, me too. Very much so. But this show is, in its awkward, stumbling, miserable way, mean to be a prequel to the Scooby Do show. So its showing how everything turned out that way: here's why he wears a crew neck! Here's why Velma wears glasses, on and on.
But honestly... Family Guy seriously has a lot to answer for; this is what it leads to.
The humor in Velma. You have to drink two bottles of vodka, smoke three whole blunts, and eat a small piece of a shroom just to laugh at one joke in the entire show.
3:09
That is some EXPERT product placement, and it is only seconds long. WELL DONE!
Shows like this are why so many people were saying things like "bring on the AI overlords" and "they want to be paid more for THIS?!" when the Hollywood Writer's strike was going on. Which isn't entirely fair- there are still some good writers working for entertainment, and plenty of others in the salt mines trying to make scripts like "Velma" into something that doesn't make teeth grind and ears bleed. But unless someone stops lousy misanthropes like Kaling from getting these vanity projects greenlit in the first place...
Wow, that "Speak Life, Speak Life" interlude was good.
Alright guys we need to stop with making scrappy doo as some boogy man or joke to make fun of lets bring him back like a actually character and part of the crew
Scrappy doo did nothing wrong
I love your takes, Greg! You have a very perceptive way of breaking down these doodoo piles! Thank you, brother! Greetings from the NOLA!
On the off chance that you see this, I just want to say that I like your videos especially because you are careful and sincere. With a lot of the other people who cover the same topics, I get the impression that they are making videos are just trying to farm rage. I don't get that impression from you. Thanks!
I appreciate that. That’s my intention and I’m glad it’s coming through!
Dropping a like and comment for Nacho Libre holding it down
Thanks bro your deco is pretty lit also
"We have often talked about when a person's time is up, and mine is now"
“You can’t see me, my time is now”
You know they ordered the 2 seasons right of the bat. Except it is just 1 season split into 2 seasons. This isn't new.
6:35 'liefeld's just feet' being politely hidden in the background is how you execute an actual meta joke, lmao
I can honestly say I have never watched a single episode of this steaming pile of dung. But sadly, I did watch over a dozen RUclipsrs reacting to it. Thank you for watching this garbage so I don't have to. (Also these videos are 10x funnier than anything Mindy ever wrote)
Just found your channel im subbing this was funny as hell
Velma is so 'woke' it does literally the opposite of what they are trying to do
The show feels as if it was written by ultra-conservatives as a strawman of what they think "progressives" are like or speak... and then you look at who wrote the scripts and realize:
1. Mindy Kaling is just a uncreative hack with her head firmly up her own arrogant ass, who has never heard of the "Mary-Sue character checklist" and why you should avoid them (esp self-insert Mary-Sues)
2. it's just hypocrisy, utter lack of self-awareness and preachiness, all the worst attributes of the self-congratulatory postmodern "woke" crowd
3. she thinks "crass" equals "humour" or "witty" as if she's a 12 year old teen boy
"Bitter and unfunny" is the best way to describe this show
Hey just found your channel, watched 3 videos back to back. This is good shit, keep it up.
5:10 "It's not cute the 1st time... (etc.)"
I feel like that's something my dad said to me once... lol
Not enough credit goes to showrunner and professional Mindy Kaling coattail rider Charlie Grandy for this amazing program.
The fact you watch all of Velma season one and two with out having your brain turned to liquid mush is impressive. You definitely got more gusts then i got.
10:50 I think the problem with the Catholic church was it poked at too many things?
It’s getting a 3rd season now the 3 fans must be so happy
6:38 his character break the 4th wall all the time. It's not bad for him to do that as his character is established to do through previous works.
You recommending Rubber is wild. I watched it when it came out and loved it. Im not even sure why.
It's always nice to get a compliment on my interior decorating, but I'm in a boiler room
It is Mindy's self insert fanfic.
0:12 Because people are watching it.
Atleast when nickelodeon's victorious did a breakfast club Parody it was kinda of funny and it made me hungry for tacos
I would like to thank you for reminding me of Rubber, forgot it existed but always wanted to watch it.
6:39 "Liefeld's - Just Feet" gotta give it to them, that was a good one!
Yeah the only thing I can think of is they were already working on season 2 before it imploded
Your review makes me happy
Oh, thanks! I try to be very space effecient with my furniture.
I can't believe this got a second season
Mindy already got paid upfront, knows everyone hates her product, and therefore now wants to see just how much crap she can get away with out of spite.
"500k? I guess I'm a hobo."
"I CAN see you." Actually scared me for a second. Lmao. Please never do that again. 😂
