AMMO REVIEW: Winchester USA Ready 9mm +P in Calibrated Gel (2021)
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 15 окт 2024
- Comprehensive review of 9mm +P 124 grain USA READY defensive ammo from Winchester. Includes day/night shots, overview, chronograph velocities, 10% calibrated gel test with IWBA 4 layers denim, and summary.
All resources in this video were paid out of pocket.
Making the gel: Using Knox powder, mixed 18 oz per gallon of distilled water. Low boil at 130 to 140 degrees F. Used a painter drill bit for mixing. Pour into 18 x 8 x 8 stainless steel mold. Cool outdoors an hour or so to burn off steam. Store in refrigerator at 34 degrees F for 72 to 96 hours. When calibrating, steel BB at approx. 600 FPS at 10 feet. Acceptable range at block temp of 39 degrees is 3.25 to 3.75". Otherwise, the block is out of calibration.

November 16, 2021: Just a quick note to convey that the frugal and undermotivated technical support staff at the TNOUTDOORS9 Ballistic Research Institute appreciates your ongoing support.
If you set up a Patreon or SubscribeStar or whatever, I’d be first in line to support the channel.
And we appreciate their steadfastness in providing such frugal and undermotivated technical support in these times as, I'll be honest, I'd not heard of this ammo yet and am glad to be exposed to their ridged research doctrine! Much appreciated!
I concur with Elliot. Patroon or even RUclips Membership would help fund what you do-beyond the $1,k you make monthly on ad revenue. If you need help with boosting your ad revenue I d be glad to lend a hand. Given the number of subs you have-no reason you can’t be making $100,k a year or better.
Great to see you back. Did any of your underpaid and overworked technical support staff break off long enough to decipher what on God's earth "A Consumer Grade Version Of The Ranger One Product" actually means? Does the physiology of the combatant change between those challenging law enforcement to those challenging civilians?
The Tn9BRI is always appreciated and I am truly grateful. Thanks for the information!
When your channel was in its “prime” i was too young to purchase firearms, but i was fascinated by your tests and always watched your videos. I am so glad your back now that i actually own firearms and these videos are of actual use to me now not just for entertainment.
I was also too young i was watching hickok, mac, tnoutdoors, forgottenweapons and iraqveteran since i was like 12, now im 24 and have a lot of firearms now.. Building another ar, m16a1 style, just got a pencil barrel. :)
Welcome to the big leagues my young friend. Stay ready at all times buddy.
Same here but with the disadvantage of living in a country with strict gun control laws
Same here
Me too
Good to see you back. Please pass on to your "staff" that we do appreciate all the hard work and time put into doing these test. Trust is a "low tide" commodity these days. Good to ride the wave with you. Will continue to watch with great eagerness.
So are a few people just giving this video the thumbs down because the ammo didn't perform perfectly? This review is very well done, and I even feel like saying "very well done" is an understatement. Excellent review!
Anything under 5% dislikes is really good, 2% awesome. I’ve never seen less than 1% with a good sample size of views. Bottom line is; 1-3% of the population are total assholes
There are some people who just hate guns and are against citizens being able to have them. They don’t care about natural rights, the Second Amendment or how great a review it is. Fairness, honesty or quality of content means nothing to them, they just want to have their way. It’s a tiny but very vocal percentage of people.
I’ve seen that on my testing videos as well. Some people become emotionally attached to crappy ammo because they paid way too much for it. Then when they see it fail they get angry and take it out on the reviewer lol
@@wvmountaineer69 I’m gonna assume you mean crappy. And while I wouldn’t replace my Ranger Ts, Gold Dots, or HSTs with it, it’ll do the job just fine. It’s better than that under penetrating critical defense crap.
There are so many shifty people out there. You really realize it working in retail and Healthcare.
Best ammo review I have ever seen ! Clear, concise and to the point with all variables, and standards disclosed. You sir get an A+ and earned the level that all other ballistic testing will be held to. Thank you.
If you're new to his channel, he's been doing this for a very long time... and yes, the best ammo reviewer by far, hands down. Check out his other vids!
Welcome to the channel haha, he’s been the gold standard for about in a decade in my research. :)
That’s all this guy does. This is usually THE source for ammo testing for me. He doesn’t always do the barrel length that I want but it’s good info nonetheless
@@krimsonhaze327 tnoutdoors 9 and shooting the bull410 have always been my go to for ballistics. Wish shooting the bull410 came back but I do appreciate 100% tnoutdoors9 testing.
Agreed. Very impressive ammo. Expansion and accuracy are fantastic. His review is not as good as the others I've seen
Ah yes, the king has uploaded again
I pick my carry ammo based heavily on your tests and I'm so glad you are making videos again.
Federal HST 124 or 147 grain!
Just make sure whatever you pick functions flawlessly in your personal carry gun.
@@theshapeexists Oh i do test, don't worry. The holes it makes don't matter if it never leaves the barrel, right? Lol
@@DystruktoBoi1 true. I have friends who buy any old hollowpoints on the cheap and slap them in a magazine and carry on. I give them crap about it, because I care and they can't base their life on bargain bin ammo.
@@theshapeexists at least they aren't carrying round nose. I can't tell you how many people I've seen doing that.
You are and have always been the best unbiased ammo reviewer on RUclips! My decisions have often been made after consulting your videos
DUDE I was so hoping you'd review this ammo! I stumbled on it at Cabela's and it reminded me of the critical defense from Hornady, only a little different. Thank you for the work that you do!
It's based off of the Ranger One LE ammo, just not bonded.
Please pass my thanks on to your under motivated and under appreciated staff? Another great example of why so many people are still here eagerly awaiting your next video release.
By far, the best ballistic tests on RUclips! Thank you for your efforts.
Thank you for staying committed to the quality of these breakdowns.
Man I still go back and watch your old work..I think I just commented on one last night or night before..keep up the good work..also I know it is a lot of work and money so you are very appreciated 🙃
You have always been one of the most consistent, unbiased sources of ammunition testing that helps demystify a lot of the marketing garbage in the industry. Whatever else is going on, I'm always glad to see your videos.
Welcome back you are one of the first few Ammo reviewers I subbed to all those years back.
Great work! This product is being marketed, even in the PRC.
Once again, underwhelmed by a Winchester consumer grade product.
Marie says thank for airing this…
Very Respectfully
j
This is the first I have heard of this ammunition, and here I thought I was a fairly well-informed shooter. I don't think I would buy this ammo if I had better choices available, but I think a deserving bad guy would be thankful for it if it was all I had to offer. I certainly wouldn't volunteer to be shot with it. I always enjoy your work, kudos to you and the staff.
Being a bail bondsman I like the lower penetration and large expansion due to over penetration being a major concern for me…
Excellent review
I also worry about over penetration so it’s a plus for me too. Oh the ironies of a “failed” gelatin test.
Very happy to see this test as it’s the only one I’ve seen on this load.
I bought some of these for my then new S&W Shield last year because it was about the only HP load I could find to order that was not OOS and nothing was on the shelves anywhere. Normally I pick Federal and Remington over Winchester, but it was either this unknown new load from a decent brand or foreign loads of known low performance. Also chose it because I thought the +P velocity and the insert would act similar to Critical Duty which are very consistent expanders and penetrate well.
I guess these weren’t a terrible choice as they expand VERY well, but surprised the penetration is that low even with that huge expansion. Seen others expand about as well but still at least meet the FBI minimum. Seems Winchester loads either expand hugely or almost not at all and need to tighten up their QC. Thanks for the test!
Makes me happy seeing your vids again. I spent many many hrs studying your vids and even attempted to make my own gel for a vid but failed. Been subbed to you since the beginning and learned alot from you and Hickok over the years back when youtube was a free place.
Glad to be blessed with another of your videos. The lighting from the streamlight works, keep it up.
Beautiful job. Based on it's performance I see no reason this would be placed anywhere near the Gold Standard (Gold Dot, Ranger Series, HST) of premium expanding ammo.
This might work well from a 3" barrel. Less velocity could cause less expansion and deeper penetration.
I have used gold dot and HST for a long time and this ammo does compare. As a matter of fact it hits harder and dumps the 375+ ft. lbs of energy quickly. Other videos show much better penetration. Just my opinion. Many new lines of ammo are gimmicks and give up so much accuracy for an exotic look. This is more traditional
No idea what you’re talking about. These take Gold Dots to the shed.
Very well done! It’s great to see you back! I think I saw some slide rulers in your technical staff pockets. Good help is indeed hard to find.
gosh i love this guys reviews. so glad he's back.
I bet the LE version would hit that 12 inch mark constantly. I think i will stick to the speer gold dots for now, although i wouldn't feel under prepared with this new winchester stuff. Another great video, Its so good having you back!
Gold Dots are a safe bet. 👍 147gr or 124gr+P. You cannot go wrong with either.
I have the 147 ranger ones. Two casings in the 50 were marked +p which is why I think it made consumer market. I’d like to see you test it as I want to carry it in my hellcat
Been watching for years. You are the gold standard in my opinion. Looks like they may have borrowed Hornady's idea a bit with the insert.
The GOAT releasing ammo tests. This does put a smile on my face.
Thanks for the heads up. No go, I guess. I'm still carrying HST 147 +P. Seems they haven't made them in a while
Thanks for producing a fantastic library of useful and informative videos.
Thanks as always for the time and effort you put in for these tests. So many of us greatly appreciate it. I'm still not sold on the polymer insert, for some reason, in any brand. PDX 1 or Fed HST is still my go-to. Great video!
Good to see you back!
Kudos to you and your staff. I wonder how this ammunition would work out of a full size 9mm like a BHP or CZ75. And also how it would perform from a 16" PCC like the Ruger or KelTec.
Less penetration, larger wound cavity, more expansion. That's the general rule for hollow points the faster you propel them the less they penetrate. There are exceptions for some bonded and solid copper/lead bullets.
Very well from my view. It's much better than he gives it credit for. Very accurate and dependable expansion
@@TherealBrooks-zc5kc and less than optimal penetration
@@SuspiciousGanymede Think it might penetrate a lil more from a 3 inch barrel?
It's good to have you back!
It's absolutely amazing you are back!!!! I was torn when you stopped making videos! Welcome back old friend!!!!
I use the same ammo here in Australia for primary production. Shoots nicely in my Sig, and does what I need it to do. And it's not in gel, or targets.
You are the reason my EDC is Federal HST 147 Grain. Thank you for the hard work and the data!!!!
What firearm do you use that 147 grain in? I've been told you don't want to use a heavier grain bullet on a sub compact convealed handgun. But I have a lot more 147 grain than 124 or 115 grain 9mm ammo
I like the 147gr HST in my 5" 1911! Ok in my 4" Walther Q4, but I wouldn't use it in my 3.1" Shield Plus. Too heavy for such a short barrel.
I also carry this. Excellent penetration and expansion out of sub-compact barrel. Almost identical performance as 124g HST with a little more energy on target from added weight. Gold Dot 124g +P also a great performer.
@@victorramosjr2239 147g HST is an exception, and does very well out of sub-compact barrel.
@@victorramosjr2239 Glock 19 and Glock 43X
High velocity, fast expanding, and hair failure penetration ammo like that is perfect for short ass 9mm barrel lower intial velocity will make them open up slower and less so they easily get more penetration.
Not a huge amount of penetration at 10-12 inches, but that is a ton of expansion. I'm used to seeing .55 from older hollowpoints and these are all above .6 and reliably expanding.
I had to chuckle a few times when you mentioned your technical staff . I absolutely love your ballistics testing always fair and un- biased . It's what sets you miles above the rest and I for one appreciate it . I don't know about " Tennessee duct tape but if it's anything like Arizona duct tape it is a good and highly prized tool in any tool box!!!!!! Along with the Arizona baleing wire . Thank you for yet again another awesome video . Oh PS how bout a video on the Norma MHP it is my EDC ammo but would love to see you test them
Always the best no nonsense ammo reviews.
My sportsmans warehouse in Altoona, Pennsylvania always has this stuff, but I've never bought any, yet.
I’m so use to not seeing him but hearing only his voice… cracks me up to see his face. Great video as always ✊🏼💪🏼
Bought my limit today at academy! Thanks for the awesome video bud!
Great to see you back, TN!!! While not stellar test results, this stuff is still better than a sharp stick or FMJ.
I always loved your videos, I work in the industry now and frequently use you as the "gold standard" of ammunition reviews when discussing ammunition with my coworkers. Harrell's #2, for what it is worth :)
Hey, been a fan of your videos ever since I watched your review of the Ruger SR22.
I even went out and bought one. My wife loves to shoot that pistol, so much so that she’s bought a few Rugers herself for personal defense, chiefly being the Security 9.
Really appreciate your content bud. It’s about as professional as can be.
Thanks
I'll stick with the Hornady critical duty 135 grain standard pressure loads for my edc👍🇺🇸 Thank you very much.
I can’t find ranger t’s anywhere
Wow! Just awesome your back .. this is we’re my forearm addiction started ! ❤️🎯💯
im starting to get spoiled here, at the rate this is going im going to be expecting weekly uploaded videos. Good review always nice to see you still making vids.
Welcome back, we missed you....great video!! Hope there is more to come....thx!!
No bull this is my favorite guntuber channel, so glad to see you back at it again
My man can’t tell ya how glad your back at it. I never missed a vid back in the day. This just made my week!
Hadn't known you were back! Glad to see it.
So happy to see you again. New shooters may have no idea of your non-biased reviews and quality research. Anyone new to this channel should check out past reviews. Thanks for sharing with us again!
This might be the best RUclips ammo review I've ever seen, but not specific to this ammo, itself! I certainly appreciate how you were able to collect the significant data you've provided here. We see a load delivering close to it's rated velocity while carrying a +P designation while the reported pressure is actually under 35,000 PSI; which by definition makes it standard pressure. It's very unfortunate that most ammo-makers are using the +P designation as marketing hype. It's also why you see quality ammo from Double-Tap and Underwood's delivering significantly better performance while being true +P. Now might I make a suggestion? For those defensive ammo types that you REALLY like (124 gr. +P HST for example), how about some 10-shot strings that are a bit more revealing in terms of extreme spread and particularly Standard Deviation (Uniformity). Most 9mm mags are going to have more than 10 rounds while we consider one or few test rounds while 10 in a magazine might vary in velocity by 75 FPS, or more. Most of the major ammo-makers tend to use faster burning propellants that are flash suppressed, to minimize the velocity spread to compensate for barrel length variation. Not every JHP load you test, but what you consider the best, and I'm taking about chrono tests and not the number of rounds you fire into gel.
Your channel is truly amazing. I reference it all the time. Just watched a video from 7 years ago for some insight.
So glad to see you posting video's again.
Wow! What an amazingly detailed and comprehensive analysis! Im not a Winchester fan but was very curious about this ammo. You covered every possible question I had. Thanks for the great review, Im now a subscriber.
Yet again with a new product, definitely not enough to unseat my HSTs from their throne in my safe. 😎 HST, Gold Dot, Critical Duty. In that order for me. I will carry nothing else.
I use Ready Defense 124gr +P 9mm in my Walther PDP Compact & my Glock 26 gen 5 9mm. I also have a spare mag Glock/Magpul with Winchester PDX1 bonded. I also often carry Hornady Critical Duty +P 9mm on armed G 👮🏻♂️ security. Hornady has been in the game since 2011 or so. Ranger T 127gr +P+ was the 🚔 duty load for years but in 2021, I'd go with a 124gr +P.
@tvercetti1
Golden saber, gold dots, and HST are all very good ammo. If you are worried about failed expansion. I would suggest a larger caliber. 40cal would come to my mind.
@tvercetti1 13.25" penetration and great expansion. 124gr+P
ruclips.net/video/fdXfDcY-0gU/видео.html
14.25" penetration and absolutely perfect expansion. 147gr You LITERALLY can't get any better than this.
ruclips.net/video/aSFQgP30Lao/видео.html
17.5" penetration and maximal expansion which is likely what allowed this deep result.
ruclips.net/video/v2s82NCLKQI/видео.html
13.25" penetration and fantastic expansion from this Underwood +P+ load using 124gr Gold Dots.
ruclips.net/video/YcrsOyAa0gY/видео.html
Gold Dots are phenomenal performers. Every one of the above exceeded the FBI minimum and expanded well. You must be confusing another bullet type with these failed tests you're talking about... Gold Dots have a proven street record too. They've been plugged into criminals by street cops for years and years. Every single test I've seen from TnOutdoors9 has been great from Speer Gold Dot. 🤷🏻♂️ I've done my research...which is why I carry them! 😎👍
@tvercetti1 **crickets**
@@TheTyrial86 Gold Dots and HST are 2 out of 3 my favorites but I'm really not a fan of Golden Saber. The bullet is a very old design that hasn't really benefitted from the latest ballistics technology, just like HydraShocks and Silvertips. The original Golden Saber has jacket separation issues as demonstrated by TNoutdoors9 in his previous tests, so I would choose to only buy the bonded version of the bullet which was an update made many years ago and did better in his tests too. They do still make the original design though, or they did as of 3-4 years ago when I last researched that projectile anyway. Remington leaves me worried about quality control. I trust Federal, Speer, and Hornady. I don't trust Winchester or Remington. Their quality control in the past has been really bad on ammo and other things. Remington's latest pistols other than the R1 were utter failures. No QC at all. I used to shoot WWB ammo all the time as a kid and into young adulthood until I got many duds. I can only recall 2 issues with Federal cartridges. They were aluminum 9mm with bullets seated wayyyyy too deeply. Never a failure to fire, and Hickok45 has almost never had a dud on camera either with Federal ammo. I really don't want a dud Remington Golden Sabre or a dud Winchester USA Ready or PDX1 when someone is 3 seconds away from decapitating me with a machete. HST performs so incredibly well. It's my first carry choice. Gold Dot is second, followed by Critical Duty or Critical Defense. The Defense is intended for shorter barrels and civilian use, while the Duty is a harder lead alloy and intended to penetrate more deeply and through barriers fired from a full sized duty handgun.
This is my favorite gel. It’s not so much about being exactly like human flesh as it is comparing the ballistic capabilities of all different types of ammo against each other. Almost every 9mm looks the same in clear ballistics
Clear ballistics is just a cheap "just as good" substitute. It's the taurus of ammo testing. Real gel is always the way to go, clear gel always gets less expansion and more penetration than real gel.
@@jonahpatton8879 Exactly
@@jonahpatton8879 I sense a brand snob.
@@Hornet135 clear ballistics is meant to be a cheap alternative to real ballistics gel, it doesn't yield the same results, which defeats the entire purpose of having a standardized homogeneous medium for ammo testing. It isn't a matter of being a brand snob, what did my taurus remark upset you?
@@jonahpatton8879 I wasn’t referring to Clear Ballistics, but rather Taurus. It’s a poor comparison at best, and no, I don’t own a Taurus.
Great to see a review from you. This ammo seems to do a fine job. People aren't bullet proof and the vitals are only about 4 inches deep in a average person so this ammo is plenty good. Thanks hope to see some more from you soon.
The point of the gel was never meant for true penetration numbers of human flesh, as a true human has bones and various density flesh and fat throughout. It is a recipe for a consistent medium to test ammo. The 12 inch minimum was created for a purpose. Poor performing hollow point ammo may not penetrate enough to hit vitals for a quick incapacitation. Penetration is the second most important aspect to a incapacitating shot, right behind shot placement.
@@Ilovebanjos hitting vitals has nothing to do with it, with a pistol you have to be able to shoot through the vitals and hit the spine to shut down the central nervous system. A bad guy can easily shoot and kill you while he is bleeding out from being shot in the lungs, heart, liver, etc because the brain and nervous system can survive for a while when the body goes into shock and starts to shut down.
@@semajniffirg230 I am pers critical of handgun cartridge performance for fight stopping, in a self def sit. Based on many real world videos now avail on Utube of real bad guy attackers getting shot, the hand gun semi auto cartridge is not the best, like many have said. My take away is don't over think the 9mm JHP load.
@@Ilovebanjosmight as well carry fmj then
@@dexterhoneycutt6807 I do, and I advocate carrying it.

Thanks for making these videos again. I'm sure they're alot of work. We all appreciate it greatly.
Very, very well done! If I could give it two thumbs up, I would. I am also curious why they would engineer a round to underpenetrate. Just a shade more velocity might have made it optimal!
So you don’t hit somebody behind them, silly boy.
Personally I am a fan of ammos that penetrate a little less. The energy dump and wound cavity tend to be more extreme. And assuming this is for personal defense passing through your target in your home or in public could be horrible. Odds are you will only be defending against 1-2 people so if 1 shot doesnt do the trick... just keep squeezing. That said its almost 2022 and I still carry federal 9BPLE +P+
Holy moly!!! when did you come back?! I absolutely love your videos keep them coming
So glad to see new videos from you. Stay safe

Almost picked up a box of these today. Glad I waited to see your presentation first. Thanks.
Great work as normal, Sir. I really like how you chrono graphed using multiple barrel lengths.
With the growing popularity of pcc's id love for you to test some of these rounds through longer barrels.
Always nice to see something from you, like a visit from an old friend, hope you're well. 👍
So happy to see you back, hope that everything is well.
Great work. I love seeing five shots instead of one, really gives a clearer picture of the range of possible results. Also, once again, I'm sticking with HSTs.
I like the one shot better, you really see what that bullet will do 3-5 shots and the integrity of the gel is not the same. Maybe opened up, weaken?
Would have loved to see a side by side comparison to Speer Gold Dot or other self defense ammo.
One of the best ballistic testing set ups I have seen on YT. Using real 10% ballistic ordinance gel at the correct temp and proper heavy clothing with good narration and video footage. great stuff I look forward to more as a subscriber. I would really love to see newer unconventional bullet designs like the Extreme penetrator, Extreme defender, Tumble Upon Impact and similar designs tested similarly and with FBI intermediate barriers like windshield and 20 gage steel. The FBI and police agencies don't test or release test results with these new designs and comparing them shot in clear gel is not comparable.
Sir, your ammo reviews continue to be the standard by which all others are measured against. Well done and you are appreciated.
I could watch these all day!
The man is back!

Thank you! Another excellent video. I won't bother buying these as I will stay with my HST 124GN standard pressure in my G26. Thanks again. p.s. I loved the office of your technical support staff. I remember when that was state of the art.
So glad you are back, your vids are the best ammo testing vids, i like the detail.
Hey my friend long time subscriber here. If you ever get the bug to try another round would you consider the classic Remington Green and White box 115 jhp. Not only does our friend Paul claim to prefer it many others seem to find great 14” plus results using it in clear gel. I’m more of a belief in the gel you have mostly used. I really like the concept of being able to afford to shoot a bunch of your chosen ammo and this product allows for that. Thanks for all the years of great information!
Super glad to see regular content from you again.
