Me too!!! Here I am rewatching all the best ammunition test videos on RUclips (TNoutdoors9) during the pandemic stupid stay at home and act like a cowardly 🐑 day after day. Ha ha ha, thankfully I have an “essential” job.
Good to see you still working at this. I know exactly how much work it is and your make it look easy. Take your time and post as you find it enjoyable. God bless.
I'm 2a all day, but the Police shoot too much and are heavily untrained to have the ability and readiness to kill on their belt, know how to write a report well, and get away with murder. I respect those who are in it for the right reason, but as a combat Veteran, I believe police need FARRRRRR MORE training. 70% are still full of fear response. Bad things... Reform needed IMO.
This video has convinced me to give the Hydra Shock Deep a try. I have been a Federal HST fan boy for the last 5 years and for the first time I'm thinking a new product may actually have the edge over HST. I am very glad to see you are back and healthy. All of your videos very, professional, very interesting, and your presentation is outstanding.
Oh My! I am sold, Love the packaging as well. Great Ammo way better than the Original.. Over penetration isn’t as bad as you think . Remember that test medium is just Jell. So it would work really well as self defense cartridge. You should test this stuff with Barriers . Wood Sheetrock and sheet steal .That would be interesting to see. Great Video!!!
That expansion looks perfectly consistent. I like the idea of deeper penetration in a SD load. You need to be able to reach vital organs when placing shots on target from angles such as the side. That round might need to punch through an arm and a rib before ever reaching the heart and lungs. Something to consider.
Eric LeBlanc That’s what most never think about when considering the FBIs penetration requirements. There’s a VERY strong chance you’ll have to shoot through an arm to get to the vitals. Defensive scenarios usually involve someone attacking you or someone armed themselves, they’re not standing there with their arms by their sides.
Great test! I was unaware of this offering from Federal. I appreciate expansion that does not come at the sacrafice of penetration. That being the case, I am impressed with this ammo. I find the performance of these rounds even more exceptional given the standard pressure loading and the modest velocities. Federal has done some nice work with this ammo!
I started using the deep in 9mm about 7 months ago when I found a box at the local Sportsmans Warehouse to try out. Needless to say it impressed me enough that I ordered 250 rounds of it the day I tested it. I use a short barrel too 3in barrel XD Mod.2 9mm subcompact to be exact and I have never seen it not expand uniformly. I too prefer none penetration over massive expansion because where I live in Western North Carolina we have alot of black bears and tweakers so I need something for both and the Hydra Shock Deep is that bullet.
@@WooWooSurvivalSchool what an amazing comment ! I absolutely agree with you - i have the same sentiments here in the Streets of south Chicago as an Uber driver.
I have some of the oldest versions of this round, the last version, and looks like if I find them on sale, I should pick up a box of the newest version too. They seem to be rather consistent with low recoil, and low flash. I am not worried about over penetration. Just falling out of the end of the block makes it clear they were done RIGHT at the end of the block.
Anyone who has had to use handguns for real know that this was excellent performance. Excellent! I am very impressed and would not hesitate to use this ammo for a general purpose load in any weather conditions just as well as the Hornady Critical Duty 135, 135 +P and 124 +P especially along with the standard pressure 124 HST. These are excellent performing rounds in 9mm that perform in the most realistic way that leads to rapid incapacitation by reaching deep enough and expanding enough to perforate organs. There is no amount of energy developed in a defense load that will make any difference. It’s all about repeatable expansion and reliable penetration when it comes to handgun rounds. I base this statement on many many conversations with coroners, ER trauma surgeons, police officers, interviews with gunfight survivors and ballistic experts who have 20 or more years of experience to include working with federal and private entities. This is exactly why I can with good conscious say that I carry a 9mm because there is no real difference in a handguns ability to stop a deadly threat from 9mm to .44mag. The variations and anomalies between each individual encounter make a greater difference than the caliber from 9mm on up. Facts are facts and the truth is the Truth no matter ones preference or myths taught through ignorance. Great vid brother as always!
Hey!...GREAT to see you back on the air ! 39 yr LEO here. Suggestion on the protocol: Turn the clothing around 180 deg. People wear the cloth with the heaviest garment on the outside. The t-shirt is next to the body, the shirt is over the t-shirt, a polar-tech liner and the Denim jacket worn as an outer garment. (The Canadian Tuxedo) This could change findings somewhat...regardless, it is more realistic. Additionally: My old PD had a shooting back in 2000 with the 9mm 147 gr sub-sonic Hydra-Shok; (out of G19s). It was a horrible failure ballistic-wise. 3 good torso shots thru t-shirt, never dropped his shotgun and continued on to shoot another officer. Being the year 2000, and the Chief not listening to anyone else other than himself re ammo failure, this caused us to switch to the 40 with 180 gr Gold Dots. This was a common finding across my region (re: Hydra-Shoks), PDs around my area dumped Hydra-Shoks en-masse. Although the the Deep look good, Federal may have erred in keeping the name with so many PDs having poor performance issues.
*SO* psyched you're uploading again! Thank you for covering Federal's new ammo. I saw it announced during Shot Show's new releases videos, but had no idea if it would really be any better than the previous Hydro Shocks.
Just like to say I've been a fan for many years, your channel is the go to channel for ammunition evaluation and your presentation is outstanding. Thanks for all you do.
Thanks for coming back! I like the load, between arm hits before going into chest being common, some seriously obese folks being almost the norm, and other weird stuff, I'd rather have a little too much penetration than too little...
I have noticed that the clear ballistics clear gell seems to develop deeper penetration than actual FBI 10% ordinance gell and the simtest. Just a caveat I noticed. Great work. Praying everything is well for you sir
I am so glad you started making videos again! I know it's time consuming and you do it all out of pocket, with the coming exception of the clear ballistics gel. Your videos are so concise, clear, and informative that I appreciate any and all the you release. As far as I'm concerned, and I'm nobody, the occasional report from you is well within the earned respect I have for your production.
This actually didn't overpenetrate. Handgun hollow points penetrate deeper in Clear gel than they do in real organic FBI spec 10% Ordnance gelatin. 18" in Clear would probably be around 15" or 16" in the real stuff, which is perfect.

Very interesting how so many bullets that went through the denim had just enough energy to exit the block, yet not penetrate the box. Seems quite consistent! Great video as always.
Is it subsonic? I like carrying 147 grain because I know the hearing damage won't be as bad in the event I had to use it w/out ear pro. Some people may find that silly but it comforts me.
Looks like another solid option from federal! Notice how there is a "ring" around the post to hold any clothing or denim so to not prevent expansion. Over the 18" maximum but just barely, so probably not enough energy to harm someone if a pass through is a result. Expansion was not 147 +p HST but still great.
@@nominalvelocity probably a good soft bodies round for like deer. Anything bigger like elk and small bear be nice to have a jacketed soft point. Will get God penetration with some expansion.

I'm very happy to see you back. I've resubscribed. My view on this ammunition is that it is good for citizen CCW. The pass throughs bounced off of cardboard, so they had no energy to speak of. A complete miss will do worse. Expansion looks decent. I don't think you can ask much more from a 9mm. I would love to buy my own gel blocks, but those things are so expensive. I'm also not in a location where I can shoot them without complaint.
Very consistent performance from this ammo. Federal continues to lead the pack in handgun ammo! I will stay with the HST in all calibers. Good to see you back at the range.
I suppose you don’t make videos anymore because you feel the production quality is expected to be high. But I’ve been watching you for a decade, and I would appreciate a video of you simply talking about handguns. Your an intelligent man, and you opinions of current products are valuable to me.
I was really discouraged after seeing the original hydrashok ammunition and went with Hornaday critical duty and defence. But after seeing HST glass and car door penetration as well as denim test's, I was seriously impressed with consistent performance. Thanks for the good honest reviews!
Seriously you make the most informative and quality ammo testing videos. Been a fan since 2012

I'm very glad you came back I'm looking forward to seeing your tests even if they are re tests of good old defense ammo.
