When is a Tarot reading not a Tarot reading?

  • Someone can ask a question and we give good, general advice in the reading. This is ok, but the Tarot can be very specific about what to do with a particular situation at a particular time. This is how it can be done. Also, a simple technique to get started with a reading, that you can do with confidence, and that engages the questioner.

Thank you John. This might be an older video but the advice is timeless. You are both very wise and a very good tarot reader.❤

@ffurrr Thanks for your comment. When you're beginning with the Tarot, as with anything, we are looking for a manual that will give us answers because we don't have the experience or confidence to think for ourselves. I try to show the next steps, so we can read without being afraid that we'll make a mistake.

@CrystalsMusings I bought the deck around 1980, I think, but it may have been earlier. It's so long ago I don't really remember. I'm surprised that you don't get a couple of blanks in new decks.

@Librarygurl Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for the kind words. I used to teach classes from a bookstore, but haven't done so for a while. I put the Home Study Course together because there is a lot to cover in the beginning and it takes people to the point where we can have a good conversation and discussion and work on doing better readings. With classes, it can take several meetings to get to a decent starting point, so I like the completeness of the Course, that allows productive follow-ups.

Very insightful. Coming from a playing card background i usually treat cup reversals more like spades. So when you take into account the context of work relationships and getting a promotion, the three of cups (to me) is a nod to "biting the bullet." Having to mentally take a check of your attitudes and how your perceived.

... yes, it's about perspective. Stepping away from the painting, and seeing the wall that it's hanging from.

    As always, excellent insights.
By the way, I also like the new haircut and yes, it makes you look younger. However, your new recording position is better because there seems to be more light and we can see you better - less shadows.
Thank you for your excellent videos. Do you ever teach classes locally or out of your home?

@needinsight I bought the deck in 1975 or 76, so maybe it was normal then, but they changed the contents?

I did a reading asking about a guy...What came up was Queen... I was expecting to see my ex-boyfriend but...end up seeing my ex-girlfriend....so when I read these cards I have to read them in a person or event that's going to happen versus what the cards standing for and put it in real time to relate to something....

@peterglynnfilms Peter? el Hadj? Ivan? All three? Nice to hear from you. Hope things are going well over there in the UK. What's wrong with Owen Coyle? He seems to have lost his touch.

@Artislife1982 @Artislife1982 Very good. If you've been struggling with Court cards, you can relax once you've read the article I posted, but youtube won't let me type in a URL so email me bllntr@yahoo.com and I'll forward it.
The Celtic Cross book will be ready quite soon - by the middle of November, I hope. It will be a digital download.
Then I'll start writing Volume Two in The Tarot Here and Now Series -this one about the Yes-No spread, or maybe Past, Present and Future.

I read somewhere that he is not keen on the Thoth deck , he says the symbolism isn't as good as the rider deck.

Been reading Tarot almost 30 years. Crowley's Book of Thoth is stunning artistically, Crowley's method of invoking the Archangel HRU & dividing the deck into 4, then taking into consideration the elemental, planetary & astrological meaning of each & every single card can be quite complicated, yet surprisingly accurate. Even when using the Thoth deck in other spreads tends to reveal quite sinister secrets/dark destinies. In Egyptian mythology The (actual) Book of Thoth (ibis headed Wisdom God) was cursed ~ when read by those who shouldn't read it ~ they were doomed. Careful! Rider/Waite is the easiest deck to read ~ just look at the pictures.

John..its funny but your endorsement of Valentia Straitons Celestial ship of the North...which I THINK you said you can pick up used for$4? I think you said that in passing...well your endorsement seems to raise the heck out of the value...they priced from$50 to $5000 for a signed copy!!! Next time someone suggests a book...Ill RUN.. out and get it.. before the price goes up...that was on EBay used books!!! lol!!

i may be young but doesnt it limit your perception if you assign a school of thought to a particular card, rather than let the message come through in the reading? its impossible to favor any other deck because who could perceievthe messages on an entirely different deck when you limit your tunnel of perception to one school of thought...the cards should inspire an answer the moment you turn it over.. idk.... sometimes i get flustered in my readings when i turnover a card and i remind myself what i think it is rather than allow it to tell me what it is... but like i said.. im young and havent been practicing long.. any thoughts.?

That's exactly what he's saying: Don't assign a motto or blanket meaning to a card. You have to listen to the context the card falls in and read it in the moment.
