I did the same and the water just collected on the bottom. Didn’t do well on the water drainage. So I repotted again and took out the poly bag this time. The trick is to remove the bottom plastic. You can just slit the sides.
You forgot about NOT over watering! You only water when you see the leaves actually “drooping”, then water pot until you see water coming outside the bottom of the pot! Over watering is one of the biggest killers of this plant! They like lots of sun! A minimum of 6 hours a day of full sun!
Excellent I like the bougainvillea this type of Bougainvillea we don’t have them in our country excellent tips thank you do they have places where you can buy sticks of different type of Bougainvillea for sale and export.
I do the same thing ALL of the time, lol! I do something not really knowing the proper way, then go watch an instructional video and go "damn, I did that the wrong way" LOL!!
The right way to do it? what a nonsense. they are one the hardiest plants around. You can stick a branch in the ground and it will grow in a few weeks. I wouldn't be too worried about those feeder roots, they'll grow right back at ya
I’m very new to the plant growth community... is potting mix and potting soil the same thing? If so which brand of potting soil would you suggest? Thank you
Please help. My bracts look a bit transparent right after they open and then the tips turn brown. Have you had this problem? She is in a plastic well draining pot. She is not root bound. She blooms profusely so watering is good. I only fertilize about every 2 months as recommended on my special Bougainvillea food.
Well, in the States, the plants come in harder, plastic containers, not bags. I cannot imagine that I am supposed to leave one of those plastic containers in the soil indefinitely .
I don't think that here in the US that you can find plants in bags that can be so easily cut. I received my bouganvillea (Bengal with variegated leaves)through the mail and had to be very careful and they are thriving. It's been a few months so no blooms yet. Thanks for this info and posting.
Yesterday i purchased a tangerine colored one, removed the bag. potted it and now it looks almost dead. Can you tell me what size pot is best? And by the way, that short video thought me a lot, thanks.
Appreciate your advice -- but have to say, no offense, there are many shades of white ----check out any paint company samples -- whatever ----your info is much appreciated here on Cape Ann, Massachusetts
Carefully take it with the soil in the hanging plant out & put the plant in the new pot with pebbles in bottom & a good layer of soil. Put potting soil in around it, tamp down, mix fertilizer 3,4,5 in water & pour that in. Put it in a place where it will get at least 6 full hours of sun & let it go. Putting in a little B1 mixed with the fertilizer water will help with transplant shock. Before removing it from the old pot, water it “slightly “ to help adhere the dirt to the plant! If it starts looking “icky” the next day, just leave it be. It will gradually adjust! Do NOT overwater your plant, that’s usually the biggest killer & remember it needs plenty of sunshine! Good luck!😍
Mine flower for about 8 months on end. Because mine is in the front of the garden, I prune it regularly and it still flowers. I have seen another programme about this plant and the guy said the more u prune the more flowers. I have to say, mine is working like that
My potted plant in a 7" pot, gets loads of sun, but wilts every couple of days, so it gets watered frequently, because of it. Will i kill it that way? If I ignore when it wilts, it may not come back.
Wish I had seen this video before I re-potted a bougainvillea my mother gave me. The lower half of the soil fell off, taking lots of lower roots off too when I eased it out of its original pot. Now my plant is looking sad and the leaves are going wavy. Hope it will spring back eventually.
The same rule applies. Remove the lip of the pot. Make long slits around the pot. Carefully remove the base of the plastic pot. Look for smaller plants in 6" pots as they handle transfer much better. Don't use a heavy peat-based potting mix! Peat retains moisture and will cause root rot in your plant if the soil doesn't drain well.
I don't agree with you in not removing the plastic bag not only for the plant, but for all living organisms. If roots can't be disturbed a little, how do bonsai specimens survive when roots are heavily disturbed and cut? On the other hand it isn't right to mix plastics with growing medium as it is a contaminant. Although Bougainvilleas aren't edible for humans or animals if it is composted, plastics may end in the food chain and cause diseases like cancer in humans and harm other animals. There is scientific evidence of this, like a study done on Mexico in a small rural community. I haven't read of recent studies in humans, but we already have plastic contamination in our bodies from plastic bottles.
I love the smartest idea you just shared! Love yah! and my bougainvilleas will also love yah!
Fantastic post beautiful work beautiful plants

Dear fellow south african. I love your accent! 😊
You are so adorable! I love this video! Very informative!
You’re lucky you have the tight climate. I’m in Melbourne, Australia and they are very challenging to grow bc it’s just not dry or hot enough .
Good tips...thank you for sharing.

Beautiful garden
Thank you for sharing. New friend here. stay connected.
Very helpful. Thank you.
Please mention the composition of potting soil. That will help me immensely.🙏
I just love this about myself I repot my plant AND then watch how to do it properly and realise I messed up 😩😩😩 I didn’t put drainage pebbles
I do the same thing ALL of the time, lol! I do something not really knowing the proper way, then go watch an instructional video and go "damn, I did that the wrong way" LOL!!
Excellent Info
What about the bottom of the bag? Should I cut it too?
when planting in pot and leaving in original container in pot, talk of cutting slits on sides. Do you remove the bottom of the original container?
So pretty garden. I wish I have a backyard.

Should the Bougainvillea need well draining soil ? maybe mix perlite or pumice ?
Nice garden

+Jas. Ruiz thank you!
Racheal Hart 😆 mine too... UK 🇬🇧 must sell in planting bags...
@J Albert Thank you for the tip. I grew mine in a pot from a slip and got nervous about reporting.
How to produce new colors and the method of pollination to produce new colors

Do you have information for “Indoor potting” of Bourganvillae for me in Alberta, Canada?
Did you leave the plastic pot inside like that

I just purchased a bougainvillea but it came in a plastic hanging pot. There is no bag How do I safely transfer it to a big pot? Thank you

@@cjboac9864 Thank you so much for helping me. I love this plant!!
@@cjboac9864 this is great advise.
Only bonemeal to be used while potting?
You can also use a good balanced organic fertilizer.
@@TanyaVisserTheGardener thnx

Hi Onna, is your bougainvillea in a pot? it may need a feeding of an organic fertiliser
