- The FIRST ever Avalon TRD here here but is it s true performance sedan? Toyota has taken there race engineering and pumped it into aero work, suspension, brakes, wheels, and chassis bracing. Under the hood is the tried and true 3.5L V6 producing 301HP & mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. Let me take you down some twisty roads to show case how the sum of all the parts adds up for this Avalon. Is the 2020 Toyota Avalon TRD a REAL performance full size sedan?

Great vehicle for those that want a large sedan that is reliable with something that is more of a sporty look.
Yes sir!
Yeah just the look only, not a performance car at all. And the grille is just plain ugly I can't take that.
I super luv the grille..Looks like a Lexus like u said..
@@py1211 Amen!
If I were to get the Avalon TRD,I would get it in this exact color. It just rocks.
Joe we love you man appreciate all the hard work you put in everyday to keep us entertained an learning with every video 💪💪💪
Thanks Albert! That is really awesome of you to say!
Love this Avalon, it's pretty fabulous! I also love the hard work you consistently put into your videos daily to keep us entertained and learning new things per video.
Thanks Brian! You guys deserve the best!
@@RaitisRides You're welcome, how is the COVID-19 status in Florida?
At least the exhaust sounds like a sports car
Sad Toast true that!
The Avalon is gorgeous and the infotainment is pretty nice looks great 🔥🔥🔥
Doug DeMuro reviewed the same car yesterday and he made it look like the car is a disappointment. Love how you point out all the TRD additions. Brakes and suspension and the cat back exhaust especially! Wheels too. That’s why I love your channel. You are the most honest and best out there. Keep up the awesome work!
Doug sucks and annoying mf 😒
Doug: is TEEE AIRRRR DEEEE
Joe: yes sir
You are hilarious!
I thought this was the full size Lexus f for an instance!!! The number of Twinkies you can store never gets old lol!!! Keep putting out the great Vlogs!!!
Cool beans! I'm old enough to smile when you reminisced on the supersonic jam. Fun times.
I have owned three Avalons over the years. The best value, most reliable, full size sedan with every creature comfort at a great price. This one adds some pizazz. Thanks for the review.
Roomy..comfortable..quality interior..quality mechanicals..reliable.. smooth ride..great handling...I love it..nice review Joe
You are so right!
I am Russian. If I lived in the USA, I would buy such a car. Very like. Thank you for the video. Nice car. It looks very harmonious.
Amazing, they should call it Avalon Tigress man, the manual shifting mode on twisty road is alot of fun.👏
Soccer dad going fast 😂😂😂🚗💨
Heck yeah!
Better than daddy’s SUV
@@elchevita8717 yeah daddy's suv😏
Love my 2020 Avalon, wonderful car.
The first time I saw one I was really confused wondering what kind of car was it? 🤔When I noticed it was a Toyota I said damn this thing looks like at least a Lexus or something German imo it's a really nice car with really good body lines
Awesome review Joe and Big Guns McGee! Beautiful piece of machinery! Another excellent review!
Thanks William for your great support!
I watched your colleague Doug a few days ago... I'll watch this (the same car again) to see your review style
benjaminpizza vargas I really appreciate that my friend!
Doug’s review was super annoying. Joe is SO much better.
@@Cgee3 Excellent. :)
There are a few KIA K900's that are selling at a discount for around $45.000. It's probably a few thousand more than this Avalon TRD out the door, but the K900 has AWD, blindspot cameras and 5.0 seconds from 0-60 mph.
I think I would get the regular model, I feel like it is a good looking car honestly and it has the Toyota v6 which is known for longevity. Not to many v6 left anymore so it makes it a little more special.
Once again, Joe, thanks for another great review. Recently, a friend and I test-drove Avalons in 3 different trim levels ~ Limited, TRD, and Touring; base price of $200 less than the TRD for the Limited, and $200 more than the TRD for the Touring; driving both Interstate and back-roads, to us, the performance and handling were virtually the same across all three trims. We immediately ruled-out the TRD, primarily because of "looks" ~ I'm guessing that the black wheels, etc are geared more towards a younger consumer. My friend drove out of the dealership as an owner of a new Avalon Touring
I drove all three trim levels as well. The trd definitely handles sharpest. Definitely less body roll when cornering. Also felt a bit more downforce in the trd which helps with traction. It just needs better performance tires to realize it. The body kit is definitely functional. Also, the cat back exhaust definitely adds a bit more horsepower even though toyota doesn't officially disclose this. To be clear, the difference between the touring and the trd may not be significant but it is definitely considerable. You're still in an Avalon at the end of the day but make no mistake, the TRD is the sportiest driving Avalon for sure. But if you want the extra features, go with the touring.
I gotta say they stepped up majorly on this and it shows.
I totally agree with you!
Raiti's Rides I can’t wait to see what they got in the future.
I think it needs a turbo or a supercharger some kind of modified upgraded engine at least a little more power then the standard
I totally agree with you! 400HP & AWD would be great!
Agreed 👌🏻
Yeah, I was out as soon as it turned out to be an appearance (functional or not) package.
@Henry Fung well then why put TRD on the side? The Avalon's base model is a roomy family car . If you slap a TRD on the side it should imply that it is actually faster and not just look faster
@@sadtoast6122 it's not faster however it still is different than the normal avalon in that it has sportier handling characteristics plus it looks bad ass
When I first saw the Avalon and Camry TRD models, I already preferred the looks of the Avalon TRD over the Camry TRD hands down, but knowing it's a bigger, and much more expensive, but it was designed and intended for a different targeted consumer than the Camry TRD.
If cost was not an issue, and I wanted a large car like this with almost everything I wanted in an ultimate performance sedan for my preferences, this would be it.
You forgot to mention that the front brakes on these two TRD models have dual piston front calipers. The front grille does not look as obtrusive with a front mounted license plate holder that I would have here in Hawaii. The exterior is so much nicer than the Csmry TRD IMHO, and unlike the Csmry TRD, the rear seats folding down.
The exhaust at idle sounds aggressive, but subdued, yet songs when opened up. Normally, I would opt for no sunroof, but I would like it. My 2000 Chevy Impala LS was fully loaded, and I should have used the sunroof more when I had it.
Everything inside is pretty much perfect, except the zonks you mentioned. No ventilated seats for the price, plain key fob, no TRD logo on the steering wheel, and lateral bolstered support, but I think the are addressing the fact that a big car like this may tend to have many big owners/drivers. You could probably have a little TRD logo made for the steering wheel, but it should have been done. I believe the TRD logo on the rear is too big for that space. I wonder if a 3D printer could make one.
The seats and rest of the interior are perfect, as the race performance red seat belts. I know the 2020 Csmrys are supposed to have Android Auto, so hopefully this does, too.
My other zonk, would be no CD player, since it is available in the Sienna CLE, and I would expect the SE, and the Camry XSE. I know it was not in the early Camry TRDs, but I heard they had an optional Camry TRD package with the JBL stereo and CD player, along with some of the other XSE features. But I know the center control section design cannot accommodate it. Nevertheless, the center console storage has the auxiliary audio input jack Toyota has put on most of their vehicles that I wish Honda would, with the absence of the CD player. It would be great if that console storage was wide enough for a portable CD player, but if not, no biggie. I keep getting people chime in about the CD players in vehicles is passe, and I am very aware of that, and their remarks fall on deaf ears of mine, as it's me not them that I am commenting about my personal preferences. CD players are still in many upper line vehicles, but the auto makers are trying to cut production costs with the majority of their lineup with the streaming, and USB flash drive, or smartphone USB line in for music and audio files.
Performance it optimized for the Avalon and Camry TRD as intended for Toyota's design paradigm. Ride comfort, suspension handling, and braking as best as could be expected, and more than sufficient power for both vehicles to maintain the best reliability, dependability, durability, and longevity. It goes as fast as I would need it to go, and as fast as it should be driven.
Fir all those that b*tch and most that it should have more power, they need to be reminded for the umpteenth time that it could be done, but the above factors would be compromised, and incur shorter drivetrain life, and added cost if the vehicle and maintenance or repairs with turbocharged or supercharged additions.
Like I mentioned previously, TRD division could come up with s performance kit with possibly a disclaimer that that kit would impact said durability and longevity with the modifications or offer an extended drivetrain warranty as a paid option. But in the end, it's up to corporate bean counters to okay the allocation of funds for said project. If someone chooses to seriously get one of these, and want more power, they should look to the reputable aftermarket tuners to achieve that objective.
These cars are what they are. The Avalon TRD was built upon the fully loaded regular productions sports performance XSE trim. For people buying either, cost is not ysuslkyban issue or concern. It is a full sized loaded luxury performance sedsn for spirited street driving, and a comfortable cruiser with all the bells and whistles.
The Camry TRD is based on the SE trim to be more affordable for the average Joe, not the awesome Joe Raiti. And cuts some corners by using the lower level seats, and omitted many options and creature comforts in lieu of the performance hear of the TRD package.
I wanted a Camry TRD or XSE, but some say the 8 speed automatic transmission seems to be keep searching for gears, and it's complication in design may have shortened operational life at higher mileage, or if abused. Also, the TRD rear seats do not fold down, and no CD player unless that optional package is available.
Ideally, I wish I could have a brand new blue 2017 Camry XSE, with the JBL stereo with CD player, the black interior with red stitching, over the light grey if I could, and the regular old school key for the door and ignition for better security, without the optional package su roof, safety features and other options. Lower price, and much less things to go wrong or have to fix.
The 2017 looks much better than the overdone 2018 to 2020 models. The JBL stereo may not have the Clarify update, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, but it should be decently good, and better than the base stereo.
It may not have the rear independent suspension and newer TNGA? chassis platform, and some say the handling may not be up to par with the later models, but I think some stiffer aftermarket shocks and struts like Bilsteins should improve it a lot, and be sufficient for me.
The engines may not have as much power as the newer two engines, but I would go for the more reliable 4 cylinder that still has enough power, and easier to work on, and not as nose heavy, and have slightly better handling that the V6 version. Also, the 6 Speed transmission may not have as good mileage as the 8 speed, but the difference is nominal, and the 6 speed is known to be almost bulletproof, and less complicated, and shifts flawlessly. Also, I prefer the 18" wheels over the 19" ones of the later XSEs.
I would get nice smoke tint windows, wheel locks, weather mats and trunk tray, but everything else would be perfect for me. The only other major thing I would probably do is get some nice performance exhaust to get dual tips and a nicer exhaust tone, and slightly more power if it would still be properly calibrated with the ECM parameters. To me, that would be my perfect, more affordable Camry that could last a long time if not thrashed and maintained properly.
But I think for an affordable, reliable sport sedan. It's still hard to beat a new Honda Civic Sport Sedan for the price, appearance, performance, handling, and reliability, durability, dependability, and longevity, especially with the optional 6 speed manual, if you can find one, and in the color you want.
You are so very right about that! Great input!
My dream Toyota sedan!! Brilliant job Joe.
I really like the Avalon TRD.
An intake exhaust and OEM tune for a net gain of apx 20 bhp would really have sealed the deal, especially since it costs more than the touring trim.
The touring costs 3 grand more
Whoooo Hooo! My car I have it in Silver and couldnt be more happy with it. Owner of 8 months now with no regrets!
Ari Truths good color choice.
You and Doug are synced up I see!
Yes sir!
I was looking for this comment. Lol I found it!!!
I don’t get it
Richard Lopez doug de muro just did the same car , same color. It sounds lame but only a true demuro fan knows. Lol
Manny Garcia it doesn’t sound Lame
Joe thank you for the review of this amazing vehicle because the avalon is not just amazing but its better than the four cyl supra and you doing a review on this makes my day
Thank you
That cat back sounds amazing on this TRD, I like it. I actually also like the looks of it too, even the grille. I jus hope they have a manual option too.
I don’t like Avalon but just to watch how you ´sell ‘ it I watch it you are excellent! Good job and continue thanks
That grill has a nice car
Hey Joe when you go to dealerships do they not get upset when driving new cars for adding miles on em? They demo cars? Great review like always!
I love mine I was lucky enough to get this limited edition trd Avalon
Huge grill, you can have your Super Bowl bbq on that thing. They made the big, comfortable, luxury ish old person car sporty haha
I love that analogy!
Sadly it's just the same Avalon with only brake upgrade bits with bigger wheels, better suspensions and cosmetic enhancement. It would be great if it get more power though. Owh and btw stay safe out there Joe. Great review 👍🏻👍🏻
I enjoy your review always. However, it would be better and useful information that if you talk about some comparisons about balance on straight, twisty bits, steering, bumpers, seat, etc. between cars rather than design. I know you love STI. But I want to know your opinion and comparison between STI vs Lexus or STI vs these Toyota sports sedans. I would like to hear about what you like and dislike and why. Because we can't drive so many cars every day as you do. Thank you.
Those who are wondering about the song. That Joe rocked out to in his childhood. Even I included. The group was named JJ Fad. Song Super Sonic. JJ Fad was an popular trio girl rap group in the 80's. Look them up here RUclips. Ok boys and girls. That was your history lesson for today.
I feel like they should of bumped up the hp to 400 from the Lexus rc engine and have quad exaust.but it’s a pretty ok car I guess.kinda big improvement
I totally agree with you and added AWD!
Raiti's Rides yeah
Its an improvement but the Kia Stinger exists and that makes the Avalon TRD obsolete. Buy a Stinger GT and you get the better car.
They don’t even need a Lexus engine Lotus puts a supercharger on this exact engine
Guys! Camry n avalon are daily commute vehicle! Why da hell u want a 400hp sedan? It defeats the purpose of daily commute vehicle! Yall act like fast and furious race car driver. Lol
Thank you for actually explaining the engineering behind the TRD package, and how the functionality works. You’re a real one Joe, you know exactly what it means to be a car enthusiast. Others try to contrast this car to like a Bugatti Veyron or something lmao 😂😂😂 aka “ ________ is the type of guy”......
It's just a appearance package
I wish you a million subscribers 👍😀 because you deserve it and the way you rewiew your videos 👍
One word, 2 letters: Stinger GT
Enough said! Great video!
Thanks Oscar for sharing that great input!
I'll answer this before I even watch the video. I have one, and it is NOT a real sports sedan. However, it's still A LOT of fun to drive and is super well put together.
Nice one Joe! What’s the difference between TRD and GR? Is one considered the “official” tuning arm of Toyota?
i enjoy your reviews more than doug d. keep up the good work Joe
When I got my corolla yrs.ago..This was the showroom car..It was gorgeous!! Gold..I luved it..Luv 2 hear the transmission w/ moter..Wow!!!!!
Very cool!
That's one fine looking car! Too bad it doesn't have a power boost. Maybe add some electric motors? I don't see Toyota adding turbos anytime soon 😂 But handling seems really good, tho!
Great vid, Joe! Just got word that my summer classes are all online 😂
I have a 2020 Avalon TRD. Here’s my opinion after owning it for a while:
Pros:
- Unique exterior and styling.
- Great handling for a FWD full size sedan.
- Great tech for less than $50K MSRP.
- The exhaust sounds good for a “sport sedan” without being too loud. The car is visually louder than it is from an audio perspective.
Cons:
- Transmission is slow and often confused. It’s constantly hunting for gears and downshifting often. It will downshift for a moment when going up a slight incline, realize it’s now revving higher than necessary, and shift back to the original gear.
- The JBL premium sound is not good at all. It’s noticeably bad.
- Many Avalons (including mine) are plagued with a terrible rattling/buzzing when listening to music even at medium volumes from the rear of the headliner. The problem is plastic clips in the headliner by the rear dome light vibrating against the metal roof. The solution is have a car audio shop drop the headliner and install sound deadening material.
Nice video, keep up the good work. what do you think about the speed of the car? I mean like when you hit the gas is there any lag or slow.
Joe...see how much better satin black wheels look over Gloss black, the matte finish doesn't wash out because of the glossy finish. To make it better though, I wish it were finished in an anthracite finish.
The short spoiler on the trunk is nice, MUCH, MUCH, MUCH nicer than the Camry TRD and the exhaust sounds nice. I wish they offered the supercharger used on the Evora to make this larger Camry more punch because after all, it is the premium version of the Camry when you think about it. Imagine this car with about an extra 50 hp and 60 ft/lbs would make here📣
I love the look of the Avalon TRD only thing is the power the should give it like 20 more HP cause I'll just get a regular Avalon and save money 🤷
That is the nicest lookin Avalon I have seen
Car for a 40-50 year old that is having a responsible life crisis.
I’m saving for XSE
Or if you have just the one kid....
I wish they still make them. I always wanted one.
Man, all this time i wanted an Avalon in limited trim but now I’m thinking i want a TRD one in either red or black 🤔
Like its thanks giving day turkeyfest, i luv this guy
Joe have you been hitting the gym brother? 💪 Cool review as always man
Kenny Phun thanks for noticing!
Gyms have been close but I have been working out at home! Thanks for noticing!
Civic si and Avalon trd BATTLE!! I would like to see that
As nice as this car is, its truly sharp, for that money I'm getting a Stinger GT, no doubt it ==========
Klasse Act...At this price, I was thinking the same thing!
@Leroy Brown Good call! But it's a bit too small to compare to the Avalon and Stinger.
@Leroy Brown no arguement from me🔥
@Armando Sturzenegger I was checking some different spec sheets. I honestly don't know. I'm guessing it's not multi, since it has CVVT. It's a Ward's winner though. Very nice engine!
I'm zonking snickers, it has to be a Milkyway!
Good call!
Hell no to Milkyway. Snickers or Reese’s Fast Break.
Hey Raiti how come you did another Avalon TRD Video? Btw great REview!
Love the color
I am so glad that you like this one!
Joe this kool Toyota Avalon is Way Out Dude But High On The Price Side .... Again Why not Air Ride Suspension ??? I’ve never liked black wheels... the front grille isn’t for me . Thank You for all the super details man ... where was it made ? Georgia USA 🇺🇸 ? Excellent. Surfs Up
It looks really nice but,I'm pretty sure that it's going too be underrated for sure.
You can say that agin.
Joe : Sell Some Custom Raiti’s Watches !
Compartment for skittles!? Im in!
Nice V-6 engine- now stick it in the RAV4 with the 8 spd auto, and you'd have a buyer.
Great review Joe! Tons of details. I saw a white one in person. Looks nice and sounds very good. With such a long wheel base this car is probably a great highway cruiser.
You hit the nail on the head!
Hahahaha the floor mats comment! Keep the good work going, Joe.
Imho. Toyota don't need to slap that TRD on their entire lineups. They already have the TRD Camry in the "sport sedan" category
Avalon should focus on the luxury dept. Its supposed to be a daily luxury sedan! They messed up the avalon imo
They could put a premium engine TRD cover
It would look good in all black!! 🖤🔥🖤🔥
You can get it that way!
Nice car nice colour. I wish the Lexus IS can be like that.
Nice car 🤙🏿🤙🏿🤙🏿🤙🏿🤙🏿 the driving was lit
Hey Joe!! Could I buy the carpet TRD floor mats for my old Sonata to boost 500 horsepower???
i should have never watched the hellcat durrango review before watching this trd avalon video....
Need to get the new Pacifica awd tester my wife and I are looking at this. Time for a fam van lol
I can appreciate what TRD does for Toyota, I just don't like how all the add-ons look aftermarket, especially the wheels. Maybe not the best comparison, but look at AMG, their upgrades look seemless and like they were meant to be on those vehicles.
I think it looks good, could use a bit more HP, maybe an AWD or even making it RWD for this model would have been better instead of FWD.
Joe Raiti, do you think you can do a review for base or mid-trim Avalon? I couldn't find any on your channel. Thank you in advance
I will get something together for you!
Sounds good!
Part 2 of the Avalon TRD with extra twisty bits and peanut m&m’s to roll side to side.
Hey Joe, I got nothing but respect for Toyota. However when it comes to a Car brand that uses their Special edition or Performance anything to a model. It should also bring something special to the motor. I'm not being a hatter, but other car brands do the same thing Mercedes with AMG. Take a normal A Class/C Class/E Class and slap and AMG badge on it. But no performance added only $$$ added to the price tag. Bottom line in my opinion if Toyota is going to slat a TRD badge on their cars at lease bump the horse power to another 50 horse.
Driving impression starts at 15:13
Even if you added a liftback it doesn' t beat the Stinger for the price ..
Toyota better check their six ..
I know it's a good car... but I just can't get past that grille. Toyota is messing up. Because everything else is right.
I feel your pain!
Me too. Im a big fan of the avalon. But they kill the car with that poorly designed front bumper imo.
Lol..I super luv the grille..
Hello Joe...does the Avalon TRD still have the DRL's in front and sequential turn signals in the front/rear? If not, I'll just go with the Touring....shame....
No it dies not.
Yep, I want. But I will wait to see the arrival of the turbo Optima to make a final decision.
45k for a Avalon i don’t think so but I love the Camry tho
nice car. but here in Canada lucky I see one.once a yr.not big sellers here.
Nice like for japanise sedan. Front close with design to the lexus line. 👍 not available in Europe.
Thanks for letting me share this one with you!
The engine is the same Camry TRD
Nice color, I thought it was a Lexus GS F (1 of my favorites) at 1st glance 😍
Hey can you change the tail and put the one from the camry?
I see those gainz Joe 💪
I wish they didn't use the TRD nameplate. TRD is now for their trucks. GR Avalon would be sweeter =)
But that enormous grill! Why??
Is this the same avalon trs you reviewed earlier?
nicely done. Evocative!
