this was me. My first car was a 98 Avalon I purchased off my parents when they bought their new car haha. put a good amount of work into it to style it up/upgrade the tech, and I really made it my own. Great first car.

Toyota creates a version of the Avalon that no one wants yet doesn’t create a version of the Supra that everyone wants.
Modifiying an existing car is easy, developing a new one is way harder. The Supra everyone wants costs million to develop, as they cannot let it built and develop entirely by BMW as they did on the actual model

That's the case with every carmaker, their halo car always embodiment of what they can do at best albeit at huge cost. Yeah, I admit it's a great sports car and they made some unique tuning on their own but do you think it's enough for a freaking new gen Supra. From switches, knob, steering wheel, iDrive, gearbox to the freaking engine all shared from Z4.
Supra name has bigger impact than Toyota name will ever be. It shouldn't exist if it's a rebadged after all. I'm fine with rebadged Corolla or Camry or whatever boring cars they made but a flagship product. Hmm, no bruh. What are they thinking?
Supra should be stopped and remembered as a legend but somehow get reincarnated as a rebadged German instead. I'm sorry if I sound a bit offensive but no hard feeling to you bro. Cheers ...

I drove one of these today for my dealership and I love it. Really nice suspension, sharp handling, nice interior. The only thing that annoys me is the FWD only. AWD and RWD should be the options for a car like this.

Doug’s review actually got me to go out and take a look at one. I was blown away. Drove it, and was shocked at the power and balance. I just bought one. This is coming from a car guy in his early 40’s coming off a back to back ownership of a 2011 and 2016 GTI which I loved. The 2021 new colors and additions like the black roof make this car look even better. And I had two red GTI’s back to back. I got the color ice edge and it is friggin sharp. My advice before you trash something, go take a look at it in person. If it does it for you drive it. You might be surprised to find a very limited diamond in the rough.

To average middle class folks a car like this will feel amazing in comparison. So we should take these reviewers with a grain of salt at times.

About 14 years ago, Toyota made the TRD Aurion, for the Australian and NZ market, it had a TRD specific bodykit just like this one but with an added Supercharger producing 257kw or 344 Bhp, I really don’t get why Toyota don’t do more in the performance sector these days, like they did with the Aurion TRD, maybe because they know these things will never see the track? Idk but all I know is that they’re capable of making a solid sports sedan and they really should give us a power boost.
They've created these TRD versions along with more dynamic base models to shed the older person's image of previous Avalons & Camrys. So more younger buyers is the target audience to likely utilize a larger percentage of the market.

300hp is pretty much EXPECTED for a car this large. It's not impressive anymore. And even if it had 500hp, it still wouldn't be a true sports sedan, because it's not set up for handling and light weight.

I just got a 2013 Avalon XLE as a 27 year old and I am in love with Avalon. These cars are so beautiful, comfortable, and enjoyable. Once I saw this 2020 TRD review, now I want one. It’s like being flashy without being flashy. It’s also being luxury without showing to be luxury. It’s in disguise and I love it. I really want and it’s ashamed that Toyota discontinued

They upgraded the suspension, that's more important to a sporty feel than most horsepower. If I had to choose between the two I would choose a sporty suspension every time.
Of course, I sold my 05 Camry and bought an 02 MR2 so really what I want is a light car with the engine in the right place!

Suspension contributes a lot of the feel of the driver experience, yes. You can't even use a ton more torque and horsepower all of the time, but better handling yes all day long any at speed range in any conditions.

I happen to like the look of this car. The grill is rather gaudy, but other than that I’d drive this car. I’ve had two Avalon’s previously and have thoroughly enjoyed them. And I’m only in my 40’s. But I like it that everyone thinks of this car as an “Old Person’s” car, because the secret gets kept at how great of cat these really are. And you can get a really good deal on them. Plus you save at least 10K on the Lexus variant and badge.

@@seeum2098 you're right, the first thing that comes to anyone's mind when they think of windy backroads or track racing is an Avalon TRD. I was simply trying to make a point that it's a sport version without more horse power or torque or faster acceleration. I'm sure the awesome suspension that makes the ride harsher for a car that's entire point is to feel like riding on a cloud makes perfect sense, especially without more horse power. Yup, it all adds up.

If a driver drove the regular avalon compared to the TRD, they would prefer the regular avalon because it handles and feels the exact same, but the regular avalon feels nicer because of the softer suspension

It still basically is. This is a weird off-shoot to the Avalon line. It represents prob 2% of sales or less.
Black wheels don't look good on bright colors like red or white. They remind me of a 90's cop car with missing hubcaps. They should be shiny gunmetal, not black.

Yup. And, Toyota will not sell an Avalon to anyone under the age of 60. True story!
My favorite part of the Avalon and Camry is that, unlike other brands, they give a damn about interior design and actually ingrate their screen into the interior instead of just sticking one on top of the dash.
All screens are going to look crazy dated in 5+ years regardless of where they are mounted. That's all I see, TBH. The placement is secondary
Marco B that will always be an inevitability of technology. Designing how they look in the interior is the part that they can control so how they do it is incredibly important.
I think this looks insanely good, it's a shame it doesn't have the performance to follow!

yeah its way too big and obnoxious, it kills the front end, it could of actually looked pretty cool if they hadnt
I think its funny how in the 90s, car designers want grills to be as small and unnoticable as possible to make a clean aerodynamic look, and nowadays, "bigger is better"
It looks even worse when they’re experimenting with the size of headlights making them smaller and smaller.
2025: we need to have a car somewhere behind our grills.

I still miss the walkthrough of the score at the end. Now I find myself having to pause at the end to read all the scores one-by-one to find out how it compares. Really wish the old style for the DougScore would make a comeback.
