Polyp Bailout - Last Ditch Effort by Stony Corals to Survive

  • When it comes to reproductive methods, corals have a diverse skill set. There is however a much less common method: Polyp Bailout. Polyp bailout is a stress response to unfavorable tank conditions that certain stony corals can activate as a last ditch effort to save themselves. During polyp bailout, polyps are killing off their own connective tissue through apoptosis. I hope you never have to experience it happen in your aquarium, but it is something to be aware of none the less.

    Polyp bailout isn't my favorite topic to cover, but it is good to be aware of these types of things when caring for corals. Hopefully you never have to deal with this in your tank, but if you do there is a chance the corals survive.

      Tidal, about a month I purchased 3 beautiful frags of torches for my nano reef, and I did aclimation for about an hour and coral bug dip. They looked fantastic for about a week, then one by one started to first lose color, getting into palid look, then polyps started to die. They will contract at night, but during lights they will come out a little, but definitely they’re not good. I started to do water changes in order to bring down nitrates I read they were present. After that, all my corals decided to get bad, and shrinked. I just have stop doing any to my tank. And after 3 days some Zoas started to reopen, not fully, but they’re half awake. I don’t know what else to do. Any suggestion?

    Hit the nail on the head. I had this happen due to salinity and it was because I had not calibrated my salinity checker for a couple of months. It simply escaped my busy mind and I payed the price for that. It took over a month for me to get the tank back to it's thriving self. I will never make that mistake again.

    While servicing a clients tank back in the 90's , I retrieved a "dead" bubble coral out of her garbage can and decided to bring it home and give it a go. Within a week the now healthy coral started spitting out baby's. In the end I got about 10 small corals over a 2 month period .A few months later I purchased a silver dollar sized plate coral from a hobbyist whose damaged "mother"" plate had been spitting out these baby plates at the rate of 1 a day for several months.

    I've got a mixed reef and keep having minor bailout with some of my *phora frags. My tank conditions seem to be spot on for hardness, alk, mag, havw awesome lighting, do regular changes with seawater and supplement. For some reason I keep getting these guys like to thin out. I also have slow to no growth with my other sps and lps. Do you think this could be chemical warfare with sofites (zoas/gsp/Xenia/couple of Kenya trees) in the tank?
    None of my hard corals ever want to grow, and it's been going on a year.
    It's a 50/50 mix of sofites and lps/sps

    • @tidalgardens
      @tidalgardens  5 лет назад +1

      It is possible that they are experiencing some chemical warfare, but having said that I have a tank that is half SPS and half leathers and the SPS continue to grow. Is it possible there is a pest or harassment issue that is keeping the stony corals from growing?

    • @tidalgardens
      @tidalgardens  5 лет назад

      Budding is a very good sign of health in euphyllia. Particularly because it means the flesh extends down the stalk which is usually the first thing to die back if there are problems. It takes a few months for a bud to become a full sized head
