At 2:16 when he pulls back on the stick you can see him grab the paddle switch. That switch in the F-18 is the G-Delimiter. It deactivates the planes protection system and allows the pilot to exceed the rated G loads of 7.5 Gs on the aircraft. That is the crazy level of detail that was put into this movie. 99% of people watching would never get this clip, but they put it in there anyway just to do the thing right.

I love the fact Hangman's ego is frequently put in check, but his character doesn't completely change, nor does he get defensive about it all. At the end of the day, he's still full of himself, but when he's impressed, he's impressed. And he doesn't hide that.

Hangman is sort of like Maverick during his younger days, but definitely not as hotheaded or brash as Maverick.
Hangman is an absolute dick one moron said how he was misogynistic cuz he was "sexist" towards Phoenix but 1) Phoenix put him down without the typical feminazi screeching and 2) bag-I mean hangman is a dick to EVERYONE - even to Maverick when he stirred up shit before this scene.
but he knows he's amazing (especially at the climax with that bragging rights).
Moreover, he's smart. he was the only one who figured out the reason Maverick was paranoid about the mission parameters and pushing everyone so hard to do the impossible is because no one had done it before - including Maverick (until this scene). And also how he figured why Rooster has hatred for Maverick.
And when he sees Maverick not only soloing the targeting + bombing and piloting but also being able to handle 10Gs he's impressed.
I will say Hangman was a rly well written douchebag that isn't just a typical dumb dickwad but also someone who's smart and grounded to pick up issues while also taking the L gracefully and not throwing tantrum like a man baby

Indeed. And that’s what defines a well made and well edited scene. Especially when your movies have “heroes” that most likely are going to succeed and not die etc.
I always refer to Casino Royale and Bond being poisoned (though that reference is a little harder to make now after No Time to Die). But I know damn well that Bond ain’t gonna die. And not mid-movie and in Craig’s first outing. Yet I’m on the edge of my seat even so.

It's amazing how everyone nails their performances in these 3 minutes. Hangman knows that it is possible and is just relaxed and excited to watch someone complete it. As almost no one was able to navigate the canyon in a short enough time, as Maverick nears the end of the canyon both Phoenix and Rooster (at 1:06) lean forward to engage more with the video screen, thinking that it actually may be possible to complete the entire bombing run in the allotted time. Then finally he emerges from the canyon (at 1:35) and Bob, Coyote, and Fanboy are all in disbelief in what they are seeing. Then at 2:09 as he begins to target his missiles Phoenix is getting excited about him completing the mission while Rooster still has some misgivings about if it is possible. Even Hangman is worried, as no one has managed to destroy the target yet. Finally, at 2:23, the bombs are launched, Maverick is pulling a10 Gs and everyone is on their feet awaiting the result. Once it is destroyed, you get to see everyone's reactions at now knowing it is, in fact, possible to do.

Sure she has a rep, they all do, since they are all previous Top Gun graduates, contrary to the cast of the first Top Gun. She is the most level headed and as a result is the most well rounded pilot, but she is never the best in any category, which is her negative.
Hangman is a better flyer, Rooster is more altruistic, Bob is more knowledgeable, etc... This means her character actually has room to develop as the story progresses similar to say Helen Ripley in Aliens.
A real example of a Mary Sue hollywood feminist icon is Rey in star wars, who, without training is better at fighting than Kylo, wiser than Luke, better at ship repair than Han (on his own ship no less), and is seemingly able to pull from her rear the needed skills, morals or knowledge to overcome the obstacle ahead. She never comes face to face with an obstacle that forces her to self reflect and grow as a character, because she is flawless and can overcome any obstacle.
Phoenix, on the other hand loses before Hangman to Maverick in the first training exercise and ends up hospitalized with Bob after her plane crashes after hitting birds. She is skilled but without Maverick's training, will not succeed at having herself or the team survive the mission

This scene is made so much better knowing the fight between Rooster and Maverick moments before. Maverick knowing Rooster isn't ready, and Rooster having no faith in Maverick. Seeing Rooster slowly lean inward as the scene goes on, followed by a stunned reaction upon seeing he managed to hit the target by himself facing 10G's... that realization that Maverick isn't being hard on him because he wants to hold him back, but because as Hangman previously said "a man flies like Maverick here, or a man doesn't come back". He finally realizes that Maverick is on a whole different level of skill, and was always looking out for him because he would not survive otherwise.
It adds so much more weight later when Maverick picks him as team leader. Where before, Maverick doubted him and Rooster thought he knew better, he know doubts himself but Maverick knows better.

Seeing the actors do the actual stuff, and yeah I know it was a trainer airplane so there was an actual pilot doing the flying with the actors in back but still, seeing them do this rather than some computer-generated stuff is so much better..

Also good CGI hard to distinguish from reality (ofc not talking about stuff that is 100% "fake", as we all know, like space species, huge robots, monsters, extinct animals...) It could be done with no CGI.

It’s more than an action scene. Maverick is proving that the mission can be accomplished with lower risk to the pilots than an “easier” route. His failure here would likely mean the future deaths of many if not all of the pilots going on that mission, pilots he was tasked with training.
Maverick also places his remaining career on the line by using a plane without authorization. Without Iceman bailing him out that was likely going to be his last time in a navy plane, whether he succeeded or not.

No one cutting someone into a million pieces. Just a good wholesome movie that made you appreciate master's of a craft and protectors of our country. Best movie I've seen at a theater since Tombstone. Let's just pray these actors don't get screwed like those in Tombstone come award time.
