Hi everyone! What grade (out of 10) would you give this video?
1 million
Zero.
S125 NEVA SAM system use radar for target acquisition and radio command for guidance, so they can pop the flares all day long it would not matter.
Oh, and those that exploded almost couple a meters of them in real life would for sure shread those plane to pieces, but that is another story.

Even after seeing the movie and a zillion trailers this scene still gets the heart pumping. This has to be ones of Tom's greatest movies so far IMO.

The fact Maverick gets hit immediately after protecting Rooster is very accurate, that maneuver dumps all of your speed making you a perfect target for a SAM.
Yo... 👀

0:52 I love how Hangman was happy for the team even though he really wanted to be part of the four.
The fact that he wasn't a bitter man after being turned down, but instead encouraged them all and even saved Mav and Rooster when they needed it most... that is a good character arc right there.
At the end of the day they’re all on the same team. It’d be pretty lame if they portrayed him to be bitter over not being picked.
@@therealmistahjay I agree, but I was half expecting that direction given a lot of movies being churned out by Hollywood. It goes without saying that this movie took me by surprise in more than one way.
I always chuckle when I see him do his little fist roll @ 0:55
He's actually one of the most important characters in the story, and not just because he saved Rooster and Mav. Despite his antagonism, he forced Mav and Rooster to look at themselves and the mission and changed them both for the better.
2:36 is the coolest piece of flying I've ever seen. He was not gonna let Goose's son die on his watch. Amazing storytelling.
@SuperThalberg this movie has to be one of the best I’ve ever seen. I saw it multiple times in theaters and would see it again! Amazing story and cinematography!
I'm not sure he was really flying the plane, so maybe the coolest special effect you ever "seen"
@@turalmage no cgi. They were using navy jets so civilian actors couldn’t pilot them but all of the flying footage is them actually in the air.
Kinda gotta wonder if he’d pull that maneuver to save anyone on that team or just Rooster
@@turalmage they use real planes💀
The shot of Maverick pulling off the cobra maneuver to save rooster felt very symbolic like a Guardian Angel spreading her wings to keep you safe. What an astounding piece of cinema, only Tom Cruise could've delivered the impossible.
thats why he works for the IMF
Wasn't a Cobra. the F18 cannot do the cobra. for it to be a cobra the engines have to be ahead of the nose on a vertical axis. This was a high alpha maneuver which the F18 is amazingly good at and why it likes to fight at lower speeds.
only American aircraft that can do a cobra are F15 ACTIVE could perform it along with F22 and F16 VISTA.. The only F18 that may have been able to perform a cobra was the F18 HARV. (high altitude research vehicle) check out the F15 active. very cool jet.

2:16 this scene is haunting for me, the fact that they're doing everything they can as a team to survive one hell of an obstacle
It gives me goosebumps everytime! The music and the panicked voices just creates this sense of helplessness. Like…
“O shit it is not over”
I remember watching in theaters thinking they're all going to die.
Yeah that was an incredible shot. It really is sobering to see them so desperately trying to evade. It's one of the best shots in the movie, and that's saying something. Maverick is a masterpiece.
It’s literally Faceless Soldier from Ace Combat 7
@@maureenobrien4968 ace combat 5 also lol
That move when Maverick brake on top of Rooster and flare is so beautiful. I kinda wish they would show that shot in a different angle to really emphasize the flares looking like angel wings protecting Rooster.
For realllll
I mean considering they shot it practically, they'd be hardpressed to do so
Made me tear up knwoing that was Goose's kid. The same kid sitting on the piano in the first movie when they were singing that song knowing that one day Maverick would protect him
1:53
Notice how Maverick evades missiles more often than his team since he’s more experienced. Which is why he had enough flares to save Rooster’s life with the cobra maneuver.

1:50 - 2:41 - I love how the instant chaos is conveyed through Hans Zimmer's ascending score and with all the sudden panicky cross-chatter over their radios. Really makes you feel the severity of their situation.
Lorne Balfe wrote mostly all of the score, including that bit.
@@InsightfulUndercurrents Why no on-screen credit, or even partial credit then?
perfect
@@plissken2156 He gets tons of credit. Lorne balfe is mentioned first in the list of composers for the movie soundtrack. His name is there too on the back of the DVD case and in the credits. You are clearly just blind.
I love how chaotic this looks and feels.
I'd like to point you toward nose cam footage from Stroke 3, an F-16 in the infamous Package Q airstrike over Baghdad during the Gulf War. It is equally as chaotic, if not more because the radio communications aren't crystal clear.
An F-16 had to evade several missiles without Flares & Chaffs
It was such a badass stuff from Stroke 3
Something that's always amazed me about this scene is the way all of them coordinate with one another. All of the pilots are in perfect sync, assisting the others to defend from the missiles, telling when they're deploying countermeasures, and they manage to evade literally dozens of missiles until Maverick is finally hit. It really goes to show how people can work as a well-oiled machine if they put the time and effort.
That is our military working at its best (in real life). That used to be how it was.
Movie...
@@Straatbrakhahaha yep. It goes to show the power of a plot line, nothing more. Come on people, it isn't reality.
Notice that once they are in the actual mission, Rooster calls him "Mav" which is a familiar form of address. Despite his animosity towards him, once the shit gets real, you are all on the same team.
Thats the Military.
animosity is a strong word. more like contempt
"I don't like you. I don't want to work with you. I don't want to help you. But, all of that applies to the guys below us, too, and I like them even less."
For real though it's easy to see that despite his bad blood with Mav, Rooster loves his godfather and wants nothing more than to get home alive with him
You may not like your team members but when it is GO TIME YOU ARE ONE.
You are brothers and sisters.
As the Marines say: Semper Fi!
This movie was the catharsis we all wanted. It was so amazing what they did with Maverick's character. Everyone nailed it. This truly is one of the greatest movies of the past twenty years. See it in the theaters while you can, folks. You won't regret it.

I just shuddered at this scene. When I first saw this movie this scene made me hyperventilate. I literally thought someone was gonna die, and later I started crying. Hearing Rooster wail for his wingman broke my freaking heart. Also, Hangman celebrating miracle number 2 is a very calming moment. Despite the emotional meltdown I had during this scene, I thoroughly loved this movie. Can't wait to see it a third time.
I think this has to be the best sequel to any movie ever made. And Tom Cruise is one of the best actors to ever live
Gotta hand it to Rooster here. He didn’t have time to wait for a perfect shot with the deadeye laser, but he didn’t hesitate and nailed the miracle shot anyway. Awesome to see his growth through the movie and validate Mav selecting him for the mission when Rooster was in fact ready, even if Rooster himself didn’t know it yet.
The sound of the flare and chaff deploying, will always give me chills.
Thank god someone mentioned Chaff as well

Lmao
my thoughts and prayers go out to the group of rabbits and their families that got direct-impacted by a stray alien aircraft
Think the problem for rooster is that he’s constantly relying on the flares to defend himself while others including maverick are doing maneuvers to dodge them
Phoenix had Bob to look out for her, same for Payback having Fanboy, giving knowledge of which direction the missiles are coming from helps to evade without using C/F. Mav and Rooster only have themselves to look out for, and you can't really compare the technical skills of Mav and Rooster since 1 is the better pilot.
Part of me wonders if it was possible for a pilot who's exhausted all their flares to evade the SAM, but another part of me wonders if the scene played out like this to add all the right plot elements
Clearly Tom Cruise's best movie by a mile. This was just such a great watch at the cinemas.

Not just that but he also keeps an eye on others
He is the better pilot. He watches out for them all and keeps his flares to save them... ;)
@@guts-141 actually dropping flares against a SAM would do absolutely nothing to save you since they are radar guided and flares only work with IR missiles. Against a SAM you would need chaffs. @Pixie Boo movie was so good! Whole theater was cheering when I saw it. 🍿
If you'd paid attention to the trailers, you'd notice there was a spoiler in there when the mission started.
This scene genuinely captures the chaos of a real life mission
I'm here watching this on break at work, and I STILL FEEL THE INTENSITY of this scene like I did at the theater. DAMN THIS MOVIE WAS F'N GOOD !!!!!! 👊🏽🔥
What really makes this scene great for me, is that Maverick used the Cobra maneuver to protect Rooster. The same maneuver that his superior scolded him for using during training.
"Use the force, Luke"
The music and sound effects in combination with the emotion are so intense! Awesome
I remember the part where Mav sees Rooster on a parachute. The frustration in Mav's eyes realizing he sacrificed for nothing lol
Lol yes, and he run all the way to rooster just to push him first. I can feel the frustration in his tone as he yells lol
I have this really gutting and heartbreaking theory that Mav is actually angry at Rooster for saving his life because he thought he deserved to lose his life on the mission as an apology to the Bradshaw family and because he is gutted over Ice losing his battle with cancer
Dude, Maverick's barrel roll is badass in 1:54
In real life he's dead
These missiles have proximity fuses, it's shown throughout the sequence 1:13 1:42 1:59
I think this scene takes some inspiration from those radio transmits of an F16 over Baghdad in 2003 (or maybe desert storm). They did a good job of recreating the stress and tension in the pilots voices.
Good point Sir.
i love how Mav is basically a Dad to Rooster i absoluetly love their relationship and how it evolves throughout the movie 🫶

This is way more realistic than "Behind Enemy Lines" where it is two missiles that go on forever. Here the missiles are just rolling off the platforms.
Just saw this 2 days ago on the biggest screen in my state; 86’ diagonal IMAX.
As a testament as to how good this movie is, I’ve seen it in theaters 8 times now. That breaks my previous record of 7 times for Gladiator back in 2000. It’s been that long.
What’s the context of why they are being shot down by missles? I haven’t seen this movie, is this meant to be training exercise?
@@gavin3895 no they blew up an underground enemy uranium enrichment plant but because of the terrain they were forced up a mountain side right into line of sight with about a dozen enemy SAMs. Hence all the missiles. Movie was very, very well done.

My favorite part of the movie. So much defending, so much chaos over comms. It reminds me of the original trailer for Halo Reach. Just pure chaos, stress, and devastation over the radio.
Not gonna lie, I really enjoyed this movie; it really had me on the edge of my seat in the theater. Props to Kosinski and everyone in the writers' room for making this scene so intense that we were lead to believe that someone was going to die. The music makers, Faltermeyer and Zimmer, definitely did their work in adding to the tense situation. And of course, I have to give props to Cruise as the older and wiser Maverick who most would certainly risk his life for those under his command, but especially for Rooster? He was like, "I lost my friend once, I'm not gonna let his son die on my watch!" That totally contributed to his character development.
I bought this and watch it over and over. Incredible!!!
This movie is phreaking amazing... what amazes me the more, is that you see this impressive scene... THIS ISN'T EVEN THE HIGHLIGHT OF THE MOVIE!! The scene after this is the one that is the best dogfight ever screened in Hollywood. I love the Tomcat fighting the SU-57, Maverick is in a league of his own.
Sacrificing himself to save his wingman should net Maverick either the Navy Cross or the Distinguished Flying Cross.
You are most correct! And if he had died on the mission saving Rooster he would've gotten both at his service along with the flag!

This Film Is the best top gun film
I like that Rooster Luke Skywalkered the hell out of that shot
Like the original movie, this sequel was made with the close cooperation of the Department of Defense Entertainment Media Office. In a May 2022 Washington Post article titled "'Top Gun,' Brought to You by the U.S. Military," Theo Zenou reports: "Top Gun: Maverick received support from the Department of Defense (DOD) in the form of equipment-including jets and aircraft carriers-personnel and technical expertise. This was authorized by the DOD Entertainment Media Office, which assists filmmakers telling military stories. 'We've been in existence almost 100 years,' said retired Air Force Lt. Col. Glen Roberts, who leads the office. 'We actually assisted the very first movie to win an Academy Award for Best Picture.' That movie was Wings (1927), drama about World War I fighter pilots." Roberts claimed that (unlike with the first movie, for which the DoD significantly changed certain plot aspects to make them more sympathetic to the military) his office did not make any narrative changes to the Top Gun: Maverick script: "These days, when collaborating on a movie, the Pentagon can still demand script rewrites out of concern for veracity. But Roberts said he doesn't meddle in the artistic process. 'When I get a script, I don't change the story,' he said. 'I may say this isn't authentic or this is wrong.' Roberts said he keeps four criteria in mind: security (the film shouldn't give away state secrets), accuracy (it should depict training and combat accurately), policy (the characters should adhere to DOD rules), and propriety (the film must protect the privacy of military personnel and their families). 'I've had people say to me, "Oh, you guys, you tell people how to run their movies,"' Roberts added. 'I would tell you: Good luck telling Steven Spielberg or Christopher Nolan or Michael Bay how to run their movie! I don't think that's going to go over very well.'"
This film was brilliant on the big screen.
This movie 1000% deserves to win Best Oscar Movie.
