My dad spent the 80’s on a oil rig too except in the Gulf of Mexico (We’re from Louisiana). I’d say from ‘83-‘98 he spent busting his ass out there on them rigs, and then one day he decided to open his own business and the rest is history.
@@user-ce6cl8wg3r There you go I looked it up for both of us Elon Musk's SpaceX bought two deepwater oil rigs last year and is converting them into floating launchpads, to support the enormous Starship rockets that the company is developing. The rigs are in the Port of Brownsville, near SpaceX's Starship development facility in Boca Chica, Texas.
Scrap-wise, probably millions to tens of millions in materials (depending on what was removed beforehand). Maybe a hundred million if the platform's main parts can be re-used. But the clean up would be tens to hundreds of millions. And it would cost billions if it took out the carrier boat with it.
@@pancake_crab4457 depends on what's left on the rig clean up wise. If there no toxic materials left on the rig like oil and such then they probably wouldn't have a clean up crew. Of course this all depends on the rig being essentially barren.
Oil production platforms are classified as vessels and have to meet coast guard inspections. It costs money to keep lights on and radar operating, as well as all the maintenance to keep it from turning into a giant rust ball. Issue is that Oil Rigs are designed to be very Utilitarian, and despite the size don’t have that much living space. You also couldn’t grow food unless you’re operating a Hydroponic farm which once again very little space for
I've worked on these facilities for over ten years. Trust me, this isn't a place you want to come have fun and relax at. They aren't made with comfort, or luxury in mind. They are very industrial, and by the time they are taken out of service, they are unfit for anything other than a scrap yard.
@@shekss5457 Brent Bravo had enough beds for around 250 if memory serves me correctly, we would often have 500+ on board with an accommodation “flotel” floating off her connected via bridge. Nice to see this wasn’t just abandoned after disuse. More importantly it was removed with such precision rather than a disaster that could of mimicked the BP disaster.
Chevron is doing that to an oil platform in the gulf right now. They send out reclamation crews with expertise in specific areas. They will disassemble it piece by piece and will scrap most of it carrying it back to shore for scrap steel. They have ecology teams that supervise the whole process to make sure, basically, not one drop of oil falls into the ocean (I know it's unrealistic). And when all the metal has been reclaimed they blow up the rest for a reef (if I remember correctly).
