How Offshore Oilrigs Work, Float, and Extract Oil

  • Offshore drilling is the process of extracting petroleum from reserves located beneath the Earth's oceans instead of reserves located on the mainland. Offshore oil rigs have developed greatly over the past years, and have become gigantic structures that house hundreds of people at a time.

Oh, deep water drilling is done in way too deep waters for that. Some deep water drilling is so deep that the rigs aren't even anchored to the bottom. They use dynamic positioning (thrusters on the hull) to maintain their position over the wellhead.

I am Cuban, 57 years old, I live in USA since 1986, spent 23 years in the shipbuilding and oil industry, 7 them working in several oil facilities owned by BP at the north sea, I was member a maintenance crew of 17 guys, welders, fitters, pipe fitters, crane operator, electricians and helpers, I was a lead welder, many times we spent up to 60 days working on those oil platforms, north sea is a hell of cold environment, then back on dry land mostly here in North Dakota I was involved in the work of lying down oil pipelines and also here was where I had the ugliest drama bullshit with bitches in my entire life, the fucking rig pig queens.

Nitpicking here: the pipe rams don't control the pressure. They simply cut the flow by crushing the pipe. Their effect is very permanent. Annulars can seal up the well and then unseal it later. The blind shear ram is there to allow the rig to move away from a bad situation. The drill string connects the rig to the well, and if there is need to move the rig away for any reason (a sudden hurricane changes direction and threatens the rig, or war breaks out and the rig is about to be invaded or attacked, or if the rig can't help but move away-if the dynamic positioning system fails, for example, the rig will start to drift off position and the drill string may break-leading to a spill-or the rig may sink as a consequence), the blind shear will sever that connection and the rig will be free. The Shear rams will only be operated after the rams seal the pipe below them, so as to avoid a bad spill.
The order that they are used is: Annular-to close the flow/control pressure; Rams-to permanently close the flow if the annulars aren't enough; Shear Rams-to cut the pipe altogether if the whole thing goes tits up.
