  • Ultimate Spider-Man quickly became a lot of Marvel Comics fans go-to comic. Great art, interesting story and fun action separate from most of the drivel released by modern Marvel or DC. But this weeks Ultimate Spider-Man took a break from what makes the series great. Ultimate Spider-Man is 30 pages of people eating while having awkward conversations about everything but Spider-Man. To put it simply, Ultimate Spider-Man #4 is an enormous letdown. Wes reviews Ultimate Spider-Man #4 and explains why this issue misses the mark in every way conceivable. What the hell happened to Ultimate Spider-Man?

Personally, I liked the issue. Yeah its filler, but it gives a nice look at how Peter and Harry’s relationships are handled. It could’ve used maybe some slight Spider-Man presence since each issue is going by a monthly timeline; and it would help to see how much is Peter learning as Spider-Man between issues since “The Masked Man” is continually referenced but one of the last times we see Peter as Spider-Man, he’s still getting the hang of coming to full stops at the end of his web swinging.
Other than that, its seems like this issue is meant to instill Peter that sense of purpose to even become Spider-Man since he’s just operating as a vigilante because young Tony Stark told him too.

Hope Hickman kicks things into gear and we start getting some progression, adventure, and COMBAT!

Honestly, I liked it. Not loved, but liked. Yes, it was awkward. Yes, Harry Came off as a tool and Gwen uppity. Here's why I liked it: when was the last time we got to see Peter....just be Peter? Not having to interrupt dinner and make some lame ass half baked excuse to get away to be Spider-man? We got to see the dynamic of Peter and MJ like how so many of us have longed for for decades. They're strong, marriage hasn't made Peter unlike able or in relate able or a perpetual man-child. I mean the fact that the dinner was bring for both the reader and Peter and MJ as a couple shows how relateable they are.
Maybe, yes, a little early for a "filler" issue like this, but nonetheless I am down for it because it gave me what *I* want, Peter and MJ. For once no villian , Spider-Man (other than convo between Peter and Harry), and no Editor to royaly cuck Peter.

I thought the artwork was weird. Some panels looked too on model with the original artist like they were swiping their head angles, but then when the angle would change the head would get all warped. The women especially sometimes have very distinct on model faces and then other times they’re way off. Like the artist couldn’t find any more reference of the person they were drawing. Then all of the pictures with the girls eating food, putting on lipstick and mj sticking her thumb in her mouth seemed weirdly suggestive haha.

  • @macabrederek9179

The reason for the wine glasses is simple. It's an attempt to try and make what is a visually disinteresting 9-panel page have some kind of visual flair. I wouldn't doubt it was an artist choice rather than specific to the script, because it would be just mind-numbing to draw the same faces with bland dialog with only the smallest of expressions being warranted. What I see is an artist who feels like they feel they are wasting their time, going through the motions. Maybe it's just me, but it feels like this was more the writer writing for themselves than actually giving something that advances the story.

  • @gojira387
    @gojira387 Месяц назад +7

You know, I like worldbuilding, I like exploring character dynamics, I like character development. So, on paper, none of this sounds bad, but what I think is missing from this is: Tension.
Again, on paper, a scene like this does not require unnecessary drama, life or death stakes et cetera, BUT scenes are supposed have a transition built into them, if the scene starts one way and has not shifted into a different way by the end of the scene, then that scene serves no purpose to the story. it is unnecessary fat. That is what feels lacking here perhaps. No conflict, no friction against the narrative's momentum, nothing that makes it interesting.
Also, comic books are not novels. You don't need "Action" in every chapter of a novel (though it helps). If you expect people to pay money for each issue of a comic book, you have to fulfill the promise made to them and in a superhero that is: you are going to see the superhero punching somebody in here. You always have to try to meet that minimum standard.
But no one should be buying this book anyway. This is not your Spider-Man. This is not main continuity spider-man. This is no one's spider-man. This is glorified fanfiction.
If Gwen Stacy dies---again, if Harry goes crazy as the Green Goblin--again or Peter lying to MJ about being Spider-Man for pointless melodrama---again?
More retreading, no creativity, nothing new, no forward progression, nothing here matters.
    It is just another con.
And Peter Parker with a beard is just grotesque. It looks awful & symbolizes how fake this entire book is.

Seems to me they have a bunch of people writing vanity projects and slapping on some super hero colored paint over the whole thing. Sure Hickman can keep the paint roughly in the lines but some of them are the literary equivalent of a college undergrad attempting to imitate Jackson Pollock.

This is by far the best issue of the series so far, purely because it treats its readers like they have a modicum of intelligence and arent dopamine starved fiends looking for their next action fix. Showing the difference in mindset and beliefs when it comes to heroics between Peter and Harry and touching upon a lot of interesting and very relevant issues faced by many young people today, in the context of the oppressive world that the Maker has created, is important to help us not only understand these characters better and the world they inhabit. Plus it will hit much harder when they inevitably have a falling out and become enemies, with the great power and great responsibility line gaining a whole different meaning.

He would sometimes draw things like Aunt May reglected in her tea kettle just to give himself something more interesting to draw when it came to talking heads scenes.

I didn't think it was that bad. I think the take that it was disappointing is pretty accurate, I enjoyed the comic, but the comic moved the plot forward very little. This is a big issue in general with what I've read of Marvel right now, they seem to have a ton of filler. The Ultimate X-Men Peach Momoko comic #1 was exceptionally bad, it had a total of 814 words in it. Many of them were short or repetitive and the one page with the most words was the a page of the comic with a newscaster recapping everything in the comic so far. I read the whole thing in under 10 minutes easily. I think it was under 5 and I tried to not rush when timing. I got some of the new Ultimate line because of Ultimate Spider-man, but I didn't feel like it was worth the time or money, so I mostly dropped them.

Bothers me that Harry is the one to tell Peter about power and responsibility. Its like everyone in the multiverse knows that 'with great power must come great responsibility' EXCEPT Parker? Not even sure Harry is the bad guy. ''Its institutional, its systemic''. Maybe Hickman learned more from his X-Men Krakoa co-writers than they learned from him. I liked the art though.

Well not every issue has to be some ground breaking story piece. You establish certain characters knowing other certain characters, and lay ground work for what may come down the road. Hard to get upset just because we have a "pause" issue here if I interpret what Wes is saying in the video. I think not much more needs be said. I doubt a bunch of people are going to dump the book simply because Hickman told this story in this issue. However yeah, the artwork didn't feel right after those first 3 issues. But one issue of fill in again is no reason to over react. WTF20.

OR to shake things up, MJ is the one who dies instead of Gwen, Gwen learns it was Harry, leaves him and that sets Harry down the dark path. Ben and JJJ are the Aunt May characters in raising the kids while Pete does other things. May eventually becoming MayDay like in Spider-Girl. Take the expected and turn it on its head. Still have the events but not how they are in 616.

Honestly I thought the dialogue was great and it was good issue to introduce Gwen and show her mindset and the conversation between Peter and Harry was interesting. The double date in general did well to highlight the contrast of their situation.
People writing off the comic because of this issue are just being myopic. Not every issue has been like this. There has been action, major plot d developments, or both in each issue before this, but i can understand why someone would be disappointed if they got this issue individually. Its good to have character development and more dialogue driven scenes but its reasonable to be disappointed if this was all we got before haivng to wait a month for the next issue reading on the trade would prevent that problem.

It was baaaaad... I think Hickman is trying to set up the next few issues backstory, with much more action needing less explanations; and having this one like the calm before the storm. But who would pay for a monthly issue of this?! (I read them online)
He might be writing the story as a graphic novel, like for a volume, but he knows he has to release it as a monthly comicbook, and this seems like a big screw up on him and the editing team: they should've split it in two, or find a different way to convey the information and impressions. That's precisely what editors are paid for.
Disappointed. Next issue better be great, otherwise Im dropping it (even when Im reading it online 😂)

Is it me or do the hands looks extra fucked up in this issue? In an action scenes you can get away with the fingers being so spread out they look dislocated, but in calm scenes like these they stand out like a sore thumb (pun not intended). I dare anyone to try replicate the hand gesture Peter does in the upper left corners at 2:50 without puling a muscle. Also, the proportions on Gwen's hand in the middle bottom panel at 4:01 are downright cursed, just look at how tiny and vestigial her pinky looks next to the rest of her fingers! That shouldn't look like that, especially with how her pinky is closer to the "camera" than the rest of her fingers.
