  • The rear of this house had recently been renovated to open it up to the backyard, but it lacked an outdoor entertaining space.
To take advantage of the poolside location, a dual-level deck was built to link the indoors with the outside.
Constructed as two separate decks connected with two steps, the upper level was designed to flow from the open-plan living area, while the lower deck provides a level space adjacent to the pool.
To create a low-maintenance deck, composite boards from HardieDeck were laid: hardiedeck.com.au/
The boards can be coated with clear sealer or stained to get the
    look of timber.
The upper level features posts set into concrete footings to support the bearers and joists. For the lower level, the ground was excavated to provide clearance for the framework.
To minimise excavation, stirrups set in concrete footings hold the bearers. Joist hangers keep the joists flush with the bearer tops, and the boards sit flush with the pool coping.
