OK, 5 years late but I just came across this game - needing a simple, solo game to play while getting treatment on Hospital. Watched many (mostly confusing) videos on ODD, and as a last ditch effort, decided to see one more - yours. Thank you so much for such a clear and concise review and setup / play. Ordered ODD straight after your video finished. Liked and subscribed 😁🇦🇺👍
That’s so awesome to hear, thank you for letting me know. Sorry you’ll be in the hospital for treatment but hopefully One Deck Dungeon will keep your mind off things. It’s a great solo game!

Numnum 363 That’s awesome! I’m glad this video helped you learn the game so quickly. Thanks for taking the time to comment and letting me know, I love hearing from viewers :)
Just got this game and its expansion. This video is *incredibly* helpful in learning the game in a clear and concise way. Convoluted rules often deter me from playing more games like this. I feel like this video alone, without even opening the rulebook, has me ready to play without that nagging doubt that I'm "doing it wrong." Thank you for this!
Awesome! I’m always happy when my videos help someone learn a new game. The rule book wasn’t too bad for this game but I didn’t really understand the flow of the game until I played. So I tried to emphasize that part more than anything else. Anyways, hope you enjoy the game!

Such a great overview! The manual is not terribly well written, at least from a game flow perspective but your video is spot on, I picked it up much quicker watching your overview and then playing. Love the game, and love this video. Do more for other games :)
Brett Watson Thank you, I’m happy that I was able to help you learn this game! I agree that the rule book didn’t do the best job of explaining the flow of the game, it took me a couple read through a before it finally clicked. I’m planning to make more videos soon, summer was busy and we did a lot of camping so not much extra time. Fall is coming though!
I had this game sleeved and character cards laminated, ready to play... then I read the rulebook :( I was honestly ready to toss it in the trash. I have too many other games with well-written rules to bludgeon my way through another poorly written rulebook. BUT, I came across your video and the game has been saved! Thanks for the video! AMAZONGLY well done!
Lance Rich Haha, I love hearing this and I’m glad my video helped you learn this game! It definitely took me a couple times through the rulebook to figure out the flow of the game. It really isn’t that bad once you know what you’re doing! Cheers!!
Excellent tutorial! You definitely know how to make it clear and concise. Pleasure to learn from and to familiarise gameplay during breaks and re visiting the game

MyklSkeleton The game has a neat feel and I love the dice. I think the cards are designed well and I love how your have different options for loot built into the cards’ different sides. The way the cards represent a dungeon is very clever and the encounter characters/ traps are fun... I just wish the developers had an even mix of female and male heroes.
sentino68 I think it’s kind of cool that the heroes or all female but I get that others would like a mix. It’s probably because I’ve got 2 daughters and they really like the Hero art. I agree with everything you said about gameplay, it’s pretty clever and slick!
Thank you for this video! The guide that comes with the game is great but a little overwhelming. I do better with demonstrations and this helped clear up some questions I had about the functions of the game
This is a really good game. After defeating all the monsters ( played over months), I will have to return with my expansion which I bought a year ago. The wraith is a real nuisance 😡 😅😅😅 but the black dice come in very handy so don't use them willy nilly.wealth Your video refreshed my memory.....thanks.
Glad to hear it helped you remember the game! That’s secretly why I started making these, so I could remember them later lol. Hope you enjoy getting back into it
It certainly is a good game and I am happy to report that my memory is not that damaged 😂😂😂 However, as for resuming the ' nervous breakdown ' I had in defeating the Hydra : I managed to calm down and beat her again but with greater ease this time round. I have been playing the bosses all last week and yes, I beat them again. Niw, will I have the courage to go and open the green box with ' poison'....well maybe I shall take a break for a while. Kind regards from GB.
I've been searching for some high quality sleeves for the character cards / turn reference that are available here in the UK, the only ones I can find are made by Ultimate Guard and Ultra Pro but reviews say they are a tight fit for Commander cards (MTG), I ordered some Ultimate Guard so we will see how they fit. Can't find the Swan sleeves in that size here, and sadly the comic / hobby shops that I know of here in the UK don't appear to be selling card sleeves online. For the encounter deck I have used Dragon Shield Standard size Clear Classic (non-matte, they show the colour and text better than the matte). The cards do slide a bit with the sleeves on, shouldn't be a problem on a level flat surface; can't say I noticed much difference in terms of slideability with clear vs matte (both are designed to be easy to shuffle).
No they aren’t necessary, they’re for the campaign to connect a series of games. I only played that a couple times and I prefer just to play quick one shot games without it. But it does make it easier to take on the harder bosses after you gain extra abilities so some people like it
What an awesome video!! Thank you very much for sharing!! Quick question to check if I understood correct; If I have a fighter with only 1 yellow fighting dice (mage) and I have to encounter 3 yellow challenges on a card, I could fill the other two up with black dices. 2 random dices can be swapped for 1 black dice. The black dice will have the same number as the lowest number of the swappe dice. Right? Of course, there are abilities per fighter to gain black dices in other ways than swapping alone.
What a wonderful introduction to this game! I look forward to playing it. Is there a practical reason to sleeve the cards? Or is it simply to keep them looking new?
I find them easier to shuffle with sleeves (mash shuffling). But that’s probably more because I used to play Magic the Gathering a lot. Other than that it just protects them from spills and normal wear and tear. You by no means have to sleeve them, I’m just a little OCD about it with card games lol
Excellent video! Only one question-do you still roll black dice on peril checks or only that one color? Appreciate the thorough yet well-paced review! Look forward to playing once my copy comes in the mail!
@@MyklSkeleton Once you get the hang of the game mechanics I enjoyed it. Bosses are very hard to kill. I did not succeed playing solo or with partner. I just picked up Forest of Shadows and see that you can combine the two games into one for a greater challenge plus there is 4 player version once the two games are combined. I will be trying out the 4 player next month.
@@ajurban2010 The bosses are super tough. I’ve only played it at 1 and 2 players but 4 would be fun to try. I prefer solo but 2 players seems a little easier. Still not easy but easier lol
9:00 no Roll means take a new die from the general supply and roll that. Gain means the same but set its value. Dice you got from your hero stats and items you get from the general supply. Unused dice in that dice pool belong to the general supply still. In a 2p game this matters for the second player. In rare cases the general supply can run out of the die you want so a skill that costs a yellow and gives you a yellow pink and blue but the general supply has no yellow, then you don’t get the yellow. The rulebook text on dice pools and spending and supply is very poor and convoluted but in practice the idea behind it is very clear. But you need to grok this in order to appreciate the game. I do and it’s a very enjoyable puzzle that makes me forget all time. Of course I have both boxes.
Exile means remove from the general supply. You forgot the difficulty setting: novice standard veteran (=default) fearless, these are for the campaign and that is where the real game starts!
Loved the video, one thing I did have to check out though that was a little unclear was on the Peril cards, You pick one and IGNORE the other , so you wouldn't take damage/time penalty from the one not chosen. Correct?
When placing a die on an unspecified dungeon peril requirement, does the die have to match the type corresponding to the choice you made for the peril encounter?
The Dice Matrix I believe all the Dungeon peril requirements are grey which means you can use any color. Obviously that would be the color you chose in almost all cases.
The instruction booklet isn't bad, but it doesn't have enough pictures/photos imo. This is not only clear, but there's no filler or BS of any kind. Solid.
I got huge plastic hearts for mine lol...needless to say I ordered small red wooden ones and purple cubes for the potion..the huge hearts are so out of place
Yeah it is pretty hard, depending on how things play out. You really need to get some good skills and items fairly quickly or you can get sort of stuck. I’ve also made it to the boss and lost too but that at least feels like you “almost won”. Keep trying, you’ll get better!
I recently got Tiny Epic Dungeons through Kickstarter, and while I think I'll really enjoy it once my friends and I master it, it has quite a nasty learning curve to it, and that also limits which friends I can play the game with. Also, it occurs to me I don't have a ton of dungeon crawler games and kind of want something else to compare it to. Do you think One Deck Dungeon would be a good choice for a simpler dungeon crawler?
It doesn’t really feel like a traditional dungeon crawler. More like a puzzle where you’re rolling dice and trying to manipulate them to what you want. Maybe check out Mini Rogue for a small solo game that feels a bit more dungeon crawly. And it’s pretty simple rules wise. Been meaning to play it more so I can make a video later.
@@MyklSkeleton Thanks for the reply! Sure, I'll look into that one. Tiny Epic games have really dropped the simplicity angle in favour of being more complex because they can be. In all fairness, they do succeed in being like bigger games IMHO, but I think it's telling that the simpler Tiny Epic games tend to be older. I'm kind of wanting something that's simple but dungeon crawly.
@@albatross1688 I actually haven’t played any of the Tiny Epic games, not sure why lol. But check out this thread on Reddit, you might find some good leads: www.reddit.com/r/soloboardgaming/comments/xwlonf/a_solo_dungeon_crawler_roundup/?
Because that’s what the shield symbol means: you must place dice on boxes with shields first. If you can’t complete all the shield boxes then you can’t cover up other boxes and just suffer all the consequences shown
To win, you have to build up one character with the progression slips that come with the game, but that is just a grind of playing and losing many games first.
I used Swan brand sleeves for Cutthroat Caverns, their size is 90x128mm. I bought them off Amazon (link in the description) but it looks like they are currently unavailable. They work great so hopefully you can find them somewhere. Good luck!
Good ser thank you for this video, most informative, concise and to the point. As a British punk band would say - "the bollocks". Hit like and I'm subscribed. Dude I don't wana suck eggs but your voice is great. I'm putting you up there with my love of the shipping forecast.... Wondering if you could make some play throughs of the harder bosses on forest of shadows and a combination of the 2 sets. Many thanks.
Thanks buddy, I appreciate the kind words. I can now officially say I’ve been called “the bollocks” lol. I have not made a playthrough video for any game yet but I’m not opposed to the idea. I just don’t seem to have enough time to make all the How to Play videos I want, let alone doing playthroughs. Maybe someday, who knows?
There’s an Amazon link in the description of the sleeves I used for the hero cards. They are currently unavailable but the dimensions are 90 x128mm, maybe you can find a different brand with those same dimensions.
Is there a limit to the amount of black die you can trade in for in combats? Also do you have to fill all boxes on the dungeon level card? For example at floor 3 combat do you fill all 3 combat boxes?
No limit to the black dice that I know of and yes you have to fill all previous levels on the dungeon level card so all 3 for lvl 3 (but only the side matching the current card type)
Michele Lazure Swan Card Sleeves (90x128mm) - 100 Pack, Thin Sleeves - Cutthroat Caverns (There’s an Amazon link in the video description). They are perfect!
I must have a different version from yours cause my pieces are different my red pieces are actual plastic hearts and my cards have different stats my level one card is different
So if you cant kill a creature in one turn, do you clear all dice or leave them there, reroll new dice on following turn just needing to fill the left gaps?
For a combat encounter you only get one roll. Once you place all the dice you can then you suffer consequences for every box you didn't cover. If you are still alive after that then you "win" the encounter and get to use it as loot. For the final boss fight you get multiple rolls as long as you stay alive. Place all your dice and suffer consequences for every box you didn't cover like normal. Also damage the boss for every boss symbol you covered up. If you are still alive and the boss isn't dead then remove all the dice and start again. Does that make sense?
DTM I agree that it’s not intuitive and it’s the main part I didn’t understand after just reading the rules. Of course, if you only place one or two dice then you’ll probably die or be close to dead depending on the card. You have to be careful what you choose to encounter!
Almost buy this game, until I found out there are no male player characters. I don't like not being able to play a male hero. A shame. Missed opportunity for the designers there.

Why cover up shields first? Explain please. Thanks.
Because that’s what the shield symbol means: you must place dice on boxes with shields first. If you can’t complete all the shield boxes then you can’t cover up other boxes and just suffer all the consequences shown
So what happens if you can’t fill out all shield boxes? Do you immediately suffer all consequences?
Yes you will suffer consequences for everything you didn’t cover. It’s harsh!
To win, you have to build up one character with the progression slips that come with the game, but that is just a grind of playing and losing many games first.
You don’t have to play the campaign. I just do one and done games and it works just fine
What kind of sleeves do you use for the hero cards? They seem very hard to find
I used Swan brand sleeves for Cutthroat Caverns, their size is 90x128mm. I bought them off Amazon (link in the description) but it looks like they are currently unavailable. They work great so hopefully you can find them somewhere. Good luck!
Where can i find sleeves for the hero cards? Cant find them on ebay. Im uk based
I put a link to the sleeves in the description but it’s us Amazon. Hopefully you can find it on UK Amazon too
For the best game 2019
Where can I buy protectors for the hero cards and the reference card?
There’s an Amazon link in the description of the sleeves I used for the hero cards. They are currently unavailable but the dimensions are 90 x128mm, maybe you can find a different brand with those same dimensions.
Thanks Man. Could you do more solo games play through and solo adaptations?
Is there a limit to the amount of black die you can trade in for in combats? Also do you have to fill all boxes on the dungeon level card? For example at floor 3 combat do you fill all 3 combat boxes?
No limit to the black dice that I know of and yes you have to fill all previous levels on the dungeon level card so all 3 for lvl 3 (but only the side matching the current card type)
@@MyklSkeleton thank you tons !
@@MickelJarvis-gg5ox You’re very welcome! Have fun!!
Holy hell I’m gonna have to watch this like 5 more times. Great video, but I’m a chimp
LOL. Good luck! It’s really not that bad once you understand the flow of the game. You can do it!
@@MyklSkeleton thanks skelly
Which sleeves did you use for the character card?
Michele Lazure Swan Card Sleeves (90x128mm) - 100 Pack, Thin Sleeves - Cutthroat Caverns (There’s an Amazon link in the video description). They are perfect!
What if you roll the die and you realise you can’t fulfil the shield option?
You’ll still complete the card but you have to take all the damage and time penalties that weren’t covered
I must have a different version from yours cause my pieces are different my red pieces are actual plastic hearts and my cards have different stats my level one card is different
Good video
raul mauricio Thank you!!
What about too many bones guys,I want to get it!
Rocky Losco Too Many Bones looks great. If I can ever find a used copy at a decent price, I’ll pick it up!
Ok, thanks now it does... But it is weird that you kill the creature and take the loot even if you place one die (or even none)...
DTM I agree that it’s not intuitive and it’s the main part I didn’t understand after just reading the rules. Of course, if you only place one or two dice then you’ll probably die or be close to dead depending on the card. You have to be careful what you choose to encounter!
Thanks... The video was great!
Can it be played as a solo game?
Yes, it was designed as a solo game but has a coop 2-player mode too. I describe the differences toward the end of the video.
Any mods to make this a 3 plyr game??
If you have the expansion or a second copy of the game then you can play it with 3-4 players
Almost buy this game, until I found out there are no male player characters. I don't like not being able to play a male hero. A shame. Missed opportunity for the designers there.
