One thing you really didnt show was just how much shine you can add with some heavy buffing and heat. It can look like a mirror if you really polish it (AFTER) you are done applying it. This rhino came out really nice, just my 2c.
Thanks for this video! The link to the spouncers came in handy. I had already ordered the rub n buff and received it, but had no idea how to apply it. Your video solved that!
These videos are so great. Never heard of Rub & Buff, but I can think of alot of ways to use this product. Tools, details, technique, hyper useful. Thank you.
I always say it’s a waste of a day if you don’t learn something, so I can check it off my list for today. Definitely learned a few things. Came out looking great. Love the other prints you showed as well

Man I love your videos do you have any video tutorials on how to slice the models in half in case they don’t fit on the printer bed this is something I’ve been looking for and your tutorials are really good.
First. Thanks so much. I’m glad you find the videos helpful. Second. 100% YES! I have this exact video on my list. Almost all my videos now are from my subscribers asking for specific videos. Your not the first to ask. My list is long but it’s up there on something im trying to do soon. Thanks for the feedback and keep the requests coming. Im truly trying to make videos people want. Thanks again Chris.
This confirmed something I was having a hard time finding information on, namely that I can use a q-tip. I was considering using it on a prop but I couldn't figure out if I could get into the fine detail lines because the instructions kept talking about using fingers
Really enjoying these videos. Been messing with rub n buff for years with pepakura and foam armor builds. But its always nice to see others methods.. Also something was off with your mic this time. When you were talking in the intro it sounded like you was in a tunnel. The tutorial part was good, just the face to face with camera parts.
That’s cool never really used rub’n buff on anything else besides 3D prints 😅. That’s odd about the audio I watched it back and didn’t notice anything. 😕
@@ItsMeaDMaDe maybe it was just my TV. Cause if sounded fine except the first minute or so and the last. It was much quieter and came out muffled. Maybe my sound bar caused it. None the less it was understandable an enjoyable
Love this video i saw this and immediately started rubbing and buffing my prints. One question i have is what do u do for the printed model after its been rubbeb n buffed as my model when i handle it ill notice some of the silver rub n buff on my hands. Is there a way to seal it with some type of brush on coating? Please advise.
This is amazing! I can't really paint, due to a condition that makes my hands shake badly. But this... So amazing! Just started 3D printing, and would love to give this a try. Did you start by painting the model black? Or can I just use the matte black PLA that I have already?
@@dabruuzer sorry I missed that part of the question. I highly recommend priming the model black no matter the color of pla. The rub n buff doesn’t stick the same as it does to a painted surface. That is at least from my experience. But I encourage you to experiment and try might work with the brand you use. Best of luck!
I don’t recommend it. You won’t get the same results. It’s a good habit to prime everything to ensure the paint and rub ons actually adhere to the print.
Awesome. Glad it could help. Sorry it’s out right now. Might want to check out the video i put out this week where I painted an AT-AT. I use a rub’s buff alternative.
I do sometimes. If it’s something I’m not going to handle like this and set on a shelf I don’t. If I’m going to be handling it I do put a rattle can clear coat on it.
@@ItsMeaDMaDe I am making a prop Captain America shield that I intend to handle a lot. Thinking about using this on the epoxy resin back. I fear it may rub off on my hand and clothes when mounting to my back. Can you tell me what rattle can clear coat you use?

I’ve recently gotten into 3D printing, and this is exactly the tutorial I was looking for to make my prints look metallic. Thanks a lot!
You're very welcome!

If you dont mind, what's the process with the heat?

Great video! I am going to get some Rub and Buff. What an effect! Looks so cool. Thanks for another tutorial!

Awesome glad you liked it. Rub’s Buff is one of those staples that everyone that 3D prints should have. Such cool results for such a simple process.
Dude thats hella cool. I've been learning soo much from your vids man. Stuff I've never though of using in different ways. Thanks man keep it up.
Thanks so much. That’s fantastic glad your able to pick up a few new tricks!!!

That’s look awesome. I got 2 mandolorian helmets done. I’m gonna try the ebony rub n buff on it. Great video!
Go for it! That would be sweet! Glad I could help.
I use this method to finish the backs of my Captain America shield replicas. Works great. Thanks for sharing!
You are a talented artist.
Thank you!
Thanks man. This is exactly what I was looking for
I was wondering can you apply somekind of clearcoat to that after its finished. TIA 🤔😅
fantastic video on this stuff. I was (mistakenly) skeptical since other videos are shorter the juice is definitely worth the squeeze here
Do you seal your prints after with a clear coat?
Another awesome tutorial. Thanks
Does rub n buff require a base coat? Or can it be applied directly to PLA with success?
Direct
really helpful! thank you so much!

@@ItsMeaDMaDe when using rub n buff which black is best to use matt, satin, gloss please. Thank u
@@johntutin1906 Each type will give you different looks. I like to use Matt Black. Using a gloss paint will make the shadows shiny.

You absolutely can. You can also use a paint brush. But be prepared it will ruin the brush. Good luck!
Great video much appreciated.
No problem! Hope it helped you.
Do you recommend painting/priming the print first? Or can you rub and buff directly onto the filament?
nice - thanks for sharing
so did you just prime it with black primer first and thats all?

how do you clean the pencils after use?
Amazing tutorial thanks !! Quick questions, did you applied a black primer or is it just painted in black?
You have to admire this man’s confidence to declare his love for Ninja Turtles… that alone is worth a like.
I thought that was the security guard from Disneys Robin Hood who always leads the parades. Im a fan and its obscure so I clicked.
what's that sponge tool called?
It’s called a spouncer.
@@ItsMeaDMaDe thanks!

Thanks so much for the comment. To answer your question. Yes I painted it black. I used a black matte rattle can then applied the effect.
@@ItsMeaDMaDe would it be as effective if I used matte black pla? Or is it always better to paint it black first? Thanks again!

So the base black coat was just using a spray paint can and no primer before the black?
1:03 If you remember Rocksteady, your childhood was awesome
Indeed.
Would this look or be different if you printed the model in black filament to start?
Nope. I’d use the same process.
What kind of paint did you use for the single coat you gave to the printed model?
LOVE your videos! You always have very creative and helpful tips!
Thanks so much! I’m glad they are helpful to you!
Can I ask what black paint and primer you used on the model itself? I could have missed it in the video but I don't think you mentioned them?
I use rustoleum matte black 2X primer.
Great one as usual :)
Can we make this process with any other paints, or it should be Rub N Buff specifically?? thxxx
You can use a spouncer with paint. But it’s more of a daubing you have to do with it. You can’t really wipe it with paint it just smears.
I live in Europe. Can I use vallejo colors or similar?
Do I have to use black primer if I printed in white in order to use gold leaf?
Did you have to sandpaper the model first before you applied the paint?
This is great, thanks! Did you sand or bondo your model before doing the painting?
Thanks glad you liked it. To answer your question no, all I did was prime it black, and then apply the Rub’n buff
Where did you get that Boba 3D print from? I'd like to buy it
At 1.25, how did you slice it in half? I think that's the last obstacle I have. For now haha. Great videos!
do you have to have a base coat or can you go on the plastic
I don’t recommend it. You won’t get the same results. It’s a good habit to prime everything to ensure the paint and rub ons actually adhere to the print.
Do you need to add a finish on top of it?
Do you need to varnish or anything after? Will it come off as you handle it or does it dry well?
Nope. Just let it dry. I typically give it 24 hrs then it’s good.
Does anyone know if this was FDM? Looks too good it was probably Resin?
It is fdm. I printed it on my ender 3 pro.
@@ItsMeaDMaDe Wow that looks amazing. I have an Ender too. Cant wait to print it!
Do you seal rub and buff
I do not seal it since rub n buff is a wax it’s not needed.
Do you just let it dry or do you clear it
You just let it dry. I give it 24 hrs then you can handle it. You can give it a clear coat as well for extra protection.
Do you have to paint it flat black before you put on rub and buff or can you just use black PLA?
If you use black pla it will have a different effect. You can do it it just won’t look the same.
@@ItsMeaDMaDe Thank you. Yes I am going the that “Eastman” look. His prints are amazing.
