    Once upon a time I was going to buy a Filson bag, but the price kept me at bay. Now I definitely won't support those prices as they move their production to sweatshop labor! That info alone made this video worth clicking on!

    • @CarlMurawski
      @CarlMurawski  2 года назад +14

      I ended up emailing them and they say that the'll keep some items domestic, like their bags and mackinaw wool products. They cited "quality control" as the reason for moving production overseas.

      @@CarlMurawski so what they are saying is that all their old and now redunant workers who worked hard for them over the years were in the end not appreciated and they felt they did sub par work.
      I am not knocking Bangladesh products as actually, if they are made from the good quality materials then there is great skill in that country when it comes to clothing.
      Many high end shirt makers in the eighties and nineties in the UK used to have quite a few more modestly priced shirts made there and I never had an issue with them.
      No, Filsons answere is BS. The truth of the matter is obvious, more profit for the owners and shareholders and less expenses in employing American workers.
      I would not mind if they were at least honest about it but I guess they would not sell many items if they were honest!
      I wish honesty in these high end companies would come back. Its either marketing rubbish to up sell or poor excuses to cut costs.

    • @Napalm_Candy
      @Napalm_Candy 2 года назад +3

      @@CarlMurawski ...I'm honestly at a loss for words. How is shipping your production to another country, one that's known for exploiting workers and using children for labor, going to fix your "quality control" issues? Wow.

    • @Napalm_Candy
      @Napalm_Candy 2 года назад +5

      @@ianmedium I am also not knocking products created in other countries; many places create quality goods, and care about their workers and the environment. The problem is Bangladesh is not known to be one of those locales, because they regularly use sweatshops and child labor, so for me it's a hard pass. I do my best to shop local and second hand to try and avoid supporting businesses/countries that do horrible things to their workers and nature.
      I agree with you - their excuse is a cop out to screw over American workers and consumers. And I'm willing to bet their prices won't drop.

    I’m definitely part of that 10% who bought the Will’s and work a blue collar job (coffee roaster) it took me about a year of owning the will’s to work up the courage to start wearing it at work and let me tell you it’s worth it. The way this jacket wears and breaks in is what really makes it worth the money. Im always getting complements by people who know the brand and people who don’t. I’ve even had strangers ask to buy it off me for the price I paid new. I’ve had the jacket for about 3 years now and it’s still solid as a rock with no problems and just keeps looking better the more I wear it and get it dirty.

      Thank you for saying this. At 24oz it's made to break-in and loosen up with use. It reminds me of old fire hoses I used on MFD. Same as Nick's and White's boots, blue collar workers will spend more for quality pieces and tools.

    Been waiting to hear your views on this jacket. And it was pretty much what I was expecting. I fall into the category of who you thought might be the right customer for this jacket. I don't do construction work but I run construction work so it suits my needs. It's definitely built like a tank but comfortable it isn't. I've had mine for three years and it never really does break in. It's definitely not a jacket that I look forward to putting on. Especially when the jacket is cold. It's extremely stiff and definitely needs a liner which is something they've corrected. Your review was spot on.

    Love my Will’s jacket and I have quite a few Ship John things. Definitely not for everyone but nothing out there is meant to be. Like leather jackets it looks cooler with time and working in it helps that along. Carhartt jackets I’ve owned fall apart at the cuffs and sleeves and so far this jacket is still going strong after 2 years. They revamped their ordering process too, still not the easiest to get but they are a very small shop. Ship John also partners with some other cool companies like Wesco, Dehen, and Langlitz to make some badass stuff. I could be their spokesperson 😂 needless to say I do love me some Ship John.

    I'd recommend trying out the Tin Duck Denim Trucker Jacket. New and small company, significantly cheaper than Filson and Shipjohn and 4-5 week wait times. Every bit as tough and heavy as the Wills jacket material wise, but with an actual working cut. It's been great for logging, just slow break in.

      I just looked up Tin Duck Denim, I really like their chore coat and pants. I’m gonna order. Why is there not any reviews on RUclips yet?

    • @wovoka9967
      @wovoka9967 Год назад

      @chrisdodson9011 really small company, very new. The guy worked with ship cloth and is venturing into clothing after Filson began outsourcing to fill the gap in the Pacific Northwest. I enjoy the work cut of it, but I really have no complaints. Possibly, the zipper could extend an inch or two further on the Trucker Jacket, but that's about it. I work in timber and as an outfitter. I haven't put miles on it for a full review as it's only been a couple of months, but I'm really enjoying it so far. It's what I wanted for a work jacket at a great price point, so I'm content. I'd recommend reaching out to Jason through the email on his website if you have questions. Great guy, he even took my custom measurements into account. I hope this helps out some.

      I’m late to the party on this but I am really liking what I see from this company. The 24oz is a huge selling point too. I was curious about the sizing and fit for you to better help me gauge when I buy.

    • @wovoka9967
      @wovoka9967 Год назад

      @jasonkynge724 I ended up going for a custom size because I have odd dimensions, but the jackets run a bit large. I'm 6'4" with a 58" chest so I got a 3xl in the upper and a 2xl at the waist with some added sleeve length. Overall, the jacket has been running strong through work and it's been great. You'll want to keep up with the wax if you tend to scratch it a lot, but no complaints. It's a work fit for sure.

  • @CRHK88
    @CRHK88 2 года назад +2

    I was just getting ready to order mine for a Jan 2025 delivery and came across a few threads about sizing that concerned me. Some saying it tends to run large and some saying it runs small. I am about 5'10" 175, and thought that a medium would fit, thinking it would be a little on the roomy side so I can layer. My Barbour's seem true to size, I get mediums and they fit great, but with the Barbour International, even the medium is snug and wouldn't allow for even layering over a thin hoodie, let alone my fleece 1/4 zip.

  • @Old_Sod

    It’s over priced. Which is magnified by the absolutely ridiculous ordering rigmarole. The cut on all the Ship John products is bizarre to say the least. As always a terrific review. The ordering process is beyond terrible. You need to schedule your day around a specific time and find a high speed internet connection, which in Alaska is nearly impossible. Reminds me more of calling in to get a promotion at a radio station then ordering clothes. If you somehow get over that hurdle you have the privilege of providing shipjohn with an interest free loan for a year. It’s too bad that the process detracts from otherwise a good product.

Just kidding bud, I love my Flint and Tinder lined wax jacket, my Tanuki Redcast denim jacket and jeans, my Darn Tough socks, my Taylor Stitch pocket T's, etc. All of which I bought upon your recommendation and may never have, had I not trusted your judgement. You've not let me down yet and I'm thankful for introducing each item into my wardrobe. This jacket looks good, the quality seems very high but I thought it looked a bit tight on you and even though I'm personally more lean, I can't see myself wearing this jacket much at all. I wonder how much you'll wear it over the course of a year? Not much, I'd think. Going out, I'd imagine you'd prefer a good leather jacket too. But you can update us all on that. Cheers wee man.

    Serious question: Back in the 1980s, Australian waxed longcoats were the rage. Everyone looked like they were riding horses in the rain. Those waxed coats smelled like 40 year old canvas tents. The smell was awful and never went away. That smell transfered to whatever you were wearing under the coat. Do today's waxed jackets have that strong mildewed canvas odor? Thanks.

    • @scsmith4604
      @scsmith4604 2 года назад

      Great Question. Can't wait to hear answers
      I have heard with the waxed canvas stuff that putting the coat in a drawer or chest with cedar with dryer sheets put into the sleeves and pockets will help with this issue. I have no experience doing this just passing on the hearsay.
      Mothballs may also help but then you are replacing one smell for another one and you might find that worse.

    Wore my Wills for over a year, in and out of the work environment and decided to sell it. It’s definitely for the slimmer body type with a more fashion forward cut. The jacket is superbly made and very heavy but ultimately it was too hot, unlined and it got swampy in it. It’s a shame that Mike didn’t want to talk to you but then cowardly made a response post on IG about your review. The longer I follow their page, the less I like the face of the company, he’s petty and very opinionated at times, and the sad response instead of an interview is a testament to that.

It’s a gorgeous jacket and I’d love to have one, but 2.5 months is a long time, let alone 2.5 years for a piece of clothing. More power to the guys who have that kind of patience/time.

    One has to be a VERY particular type of city-dwelling ιdιοτ to believe that is “America’s greatest waxed jacket”: it is slim-fitting (which is contrary to the purpose of what sets itself out to be a “rugged work jacket”), its internal pocket runs too small (you definitely can’t comfortable fit a smartphone there), both chest pockets have flaps, so you can’t put something like a pen or earphones you need to quickly access there, there are no zipped pockets for when you need to ensure 100% protection from water to an item, the weight (in addition to the fit) limits your movements… And, on the aesthetic aspect, as acknowledged in this video, it is NOT a dressy or stylish jacket, it just looks lazy with those collars that won’t stand firm. Not to mention that the fact that it is unlined combined with how the material means it is not thoroughly washable means your own body oils and odour that will inevitably get into it will render it unusable ins civilised setting in 5 years or so. Awful, overpriced heavy trash.

    Disagree 100% this IS a functional work jacket moreso than most. 24oz waxed canvas is essentially made for welding and motorcycle riding without having to choose either.
    And blue collar workers actually do spend more for quality tools and equipment exam: White's and Nick's boots, certain expensive tool brands etc.
    I think you let the fact that he didn't want to chat with you affect your review. Anyone can see this jacket was born of motorcycle heritage and transitioned to shop wear as is also described on Ship John's website.
