There was a nice weather forecast, but I was skint. So I decided to go for a walk. The plan was to start from home in Edinburgh and walk west to Glasgow. It's over 50 miles (around 85km) and I had the crazy notion this was something I could do. It wasn't. Come and see what this walk is like, well, part of it anyway!

theres no way you can call walking 42 and a half miles a failure, thats an amazing achievement well done
Thanks so much Pat, makes me feel a bit better :) Cheer for watching!
An unhealthy amount of enthusiasm and a sprinkle of madness. A huge achievement and a massive target for anyone else to try and better.
Haha cheers George! Thanks so much for watching and for the encouragement!
42.5 miles though! That’s a success in my books. Hope you got home to put your feet up 👍
Cheers for that! Ohh the next day I couldn't even lift my feet to put them up! :) Thanks for watching and for the encouragement!
42 miles is no way a failure!! That’s impressive, I walk regularly doing about ten miles on my route, takes about 2.30 hours and that’s more than enough for me, well done!!👍
Cheers Jeff! I need to get out more regularly like you!
SteveMarsh cheers Steve, the canals looked really nice too, I’m from Birmingham so I’ve done lot’s of canal walking, I’m living in Taipei at the moment with the wife’s job but there’s some cracking riverside walks here so I’m enjoying that too.
You managed to do more than most people would dream of doing. Your a legend bloke.
Thanks so much! Still tempted to give it another shot, maybe camp overnight and make it a 2 day thing :)
'It is not the winning, it is the taking part' - A. Ferguson.
Exactly! Cheers for watching! :)
No failure at all. You did well. Walking over 60km/day is nothing to be ashamed of.
Besides, you walked through beautiful landscape and you took us with you. Thank you for all this. Greetings from Bavaria 😊💙🏴🖐👍
Hello all the way over there in Bavaria! :) Thanks so much for watching and for the kind words!
Bavaria is also beautiful & the beer isn’t bad either 👍 greetings from Edinburgh 🏴
@@mcdell6970 slàinte mhath on this beautiful springday. Edinburgh... a place I long to be. 🙋🏻♀️🏴🌷
Wow! What an impressive journey. The walking in pitch dark and being dumped out onto a roadway was scary. I really enjoyed seeing the canal walkways, the wildlife and beautiful area. Hope your feet are recovered by now.
Hah just about :) And yes, I'm very scared of the dark! :)
you were only 10miles from your goal so I'd say that was a win.
Thanks so much for watching :) it was tough to stop, but looking back it was probably as well as I could expect. Cheers :)
Steve, my admiration for your effort! I've walked most of the Union Canal between Edinburgh and Falkirk, but I did it one segment at a time - five days I believe. I DO endorse the canal walk for any of your viewers. The aquaducts and views across the Forth are a great experience.
It's such a great place to explore, but much better at a slower pace than what I was attempting!
I am truly in awe of your videos, I spent some time in Scotland during my younger years so I know the landscape up there in Scotland is already amazing however you seem to have an incredibly artistic skill for capturing the natural beauty of Scotland. Particularly in the Edinburgh to Glasgow in a day video, your cinematography is worthy of many professional lighting cameramen in the film industry. Well done sir I have subscribed and I look forward to more of your excellent videos.
That's so kind of you to say! Gives me inspiration to get out there again soon. However the Scottish weather right now wouldn't give any nice shots that's for sure! Cheers for the sub :)
You got much further than I would have 👍
I really pushed it a bit far to be honest, I should have stopped in Falkirk! Thanks for watching :)
Steve, I'm offended at the 'urban area that's not so nice' as you walk past my house in Polmont at 4:16! Seriously though, the canal is a cracking walk. Fair play!
Haha sorry, but I didn’t mean the area, I meant that I hadn’t wanted to divert into any town! :) Polmont is nicer than where I live for sure!
Steve Just watching your older videos and I was amazed at your strength and tenacity, I certainly wouldn’t call that walk a failure it was a fantastic effort.
Some people would be planning for months to complete that distance.
I myself have attempted to walk from London to Brighton and failed after around 43 miles in 1982.
These walks were done by the London stock exchange and American banks for 50 years or more. All for charity
In my late 40’s I did 19 miles along the Caledonian canal from a lodge to Fort William and back. Thought it was a good idea made it fine back to the lodge but realised I had reached my limit or just that spot where I’d had enough and wanted a coffee and just to sit down. I’ve cycled 50 miles round trip a few years ago and that was hard enough.
I'm same age and you are so right, knowing your limit is important, especially for enjoyment of it. I'd like to get a bike now for sure. Cheers for watching :)
So glad you at least achieved your two opening objectives, not to fall into the canal nor to be murdered. ✔️ ✔️ 😂
I do love a canal walk. The route finding is always easy, the terrain is flat and often the scenery is lovely.
It was a brave challenge. Thank you for sharing. 👏👏👍😎
Certainly no walk of shame Steve! You did 41 miles that’s amazing mate!!!
This was the first of Steve's videos I watched gave me the inspiration to get off my couch I ended up walking the length of the Union and Forth of Clyde canal to Bowling in sections it's a worthwhile walk
Absolutely fantastic mate well done!
Steve, I was thinking of doing that walk in the summer. BUT you did it! And it's not a failure. Just a lesson.
So glad you at least achieved your two opening objectives, not to fall into the canal nor to be murdered. ✔️ ✔️ 😂
I do love a canal walk. The route finding is always easy, the terrain is flat and often the scenery is lovely.
As for the Falkirk Wheel…… wow, fantastic engineering 👌
Overall, it was a brave challenge. Thank you for sharing. 👏👏👍😎
Dam good effort though mate, if only you wore trainers! Ah well never mind, still a win in my eyes :)
Cheers Ryan! I am tempted to give it another go with a bit of experience under my belt now! Thanks for watching :)
Your Poor feet! Thought you didn't make it..... You still did an excellent job mate. That canal looked beautiful
Wow! Look at the team spirit you’ve evoked amongst all of us. Ace. By the way some of your best photography so far.
Thanks so much 🙏 it was a fun challenge :)
Very good videography Steve. That feeling of "just let me find a train or bus station", becomes overwhelming. Bravo for the attempt.
Thanks Peter! Yeah, and I was so thirsty towards the end with no sign of a shop for miles, so overwhelming is the right word! Cheers :)
Another great video with laughter and beauty.
👍👍👍
I LOVE that I subscribe to the travel guy that got lost in the town he was born in.
❤❤❤
Google maps loves to have a go at us, doesn't it.
Haha me getting lost is a recurring theme :) Thanks so much for your support! And I laughed out loud at your comment :D
It was very entertaining. It was a good walk and I enjoyed watching it (and your other videos) while sitting lazely at my home in Canada. My Grandparents were born and raised in Glasgow and came to Canada in their 20's. If they were alive today I'm sure they would have loved watching your videos.
Thanks so much Jackie! All the best to you in your beautiful country! :)
Congratulations of over 5000 subscribers!
Ohhh the path is awesome, we should do it on the bikes!
All your effort was worth to see such a beautiful sunrise☀️
I’m super proud of You!!!😚
We’ll BLAST it on the bikes and be in Glasgow in time for (Tim Hortons) dinner 😊
You are a ROCK STAR! You didn't fail. You succeeded!
Thanks so much Jim! That's much appreciated! :)
It wasn't a failure but an experience.
Keep being alive my friend 👏
That's a very good way to look at it, thanks! And thanks as well for watching :)
This was the first of your videos that I watched. No ego, just a guy trying to challenge himself, and accepting his limitations. I'd rather watch that than someone telling how great they are. ( When I lived in Falkirk, I used to cycle a fair whack of the route.)
Cheers David! Glad that comes through :) I thought my limitations were a wee bit further, but every day is a school day :)
@@steve-marsh I thought you chose a really hard route, and, you started in Edinburgh, not on the boundary. Plus you had the Falkirk detour. Then you had the extra trip to Cumbernauld station. It wasn't a fail.
I have done Broxburn- Edinburgh and Broxburn - Falkirk but not done Falkirk - Edinburgh in one go. Wouldn't try all the way to Glasgow, that would kill me. Shame canal closed and you missed the laughin' /greetin' Bridge and tunnel into Falkirk. The aqueduct is second largest in UK, you were probably too knackered to have went down for a shot. Great vlog👍
Cheers mate! Hopefully NEXT TIME the canal will be open and I’ll see it :) yup, there definitely be a next time, but maybe on 2 wheels to make it a little bit easier! Some cracking walks along that canal though, had never been before at all!
Superb video. Sometimes I think we are on the same wavelength. Around ten years ago I looked at the possibility of walking Glasgow to Edinburgh, and decided it was a 'maybe'. Last year I looked at this again and decided 'maybe not'. Your video has made me think it's a 'maybe possibly but probably not'. Well done on what you achieved.
Cheers Scott - totally agree, we have the same kind of ideas for sure! I think you could do it - a good bit fitter than me, and I've seen all your long walks thinking 'no way could I do that!'
What a lovely effort! I enjoyed your long walk, even if you didn’t (at the end). ☺️
Thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed it! It was still a bonus to be outside on such a beautiful October day!
I would have struggled to do 4.2 miles let alone 42 , this is why they invented cars/trains/canal boats / bikes ! some fantastic scenery though , the Falkirk wheel is an amazing piece of engineering worth the walk alone .
Cheers Jon! Yeah, the scenery and beautiful day made up for the early exit :) Definitely a bike next time!
Excellent video friend. Keep making beautiful videos. Your camera quality is just amazing i must say. New friend from Scotland 👍❤️
Thanks so much for watching! Stay tuned, more to come soon :)
That headache you had hardly came from the sun, I'd say. You were plainly and simply exhausted, Mate!
But, heck, what a magnificent countryside! Absolutely beautiful!
Aye, I’m sure you’re spot on! Every part of me was at the limit! Cheers for watching!
Cracking pics man, beautiful scenery!
Thanks 👍
Oh, I think you did splendidly - well done for such a long walk! The canal and all the birdies looked lovely :)
Thanks so much! Really appreciate the encouragement! The birdies were singing for me most of the morning :)
Good stuff mate, keep the great work going and obviously fit yourself up and get that canal done end to end!! :-)
Cheers for that, yeah, I have this one on the list as a repeat attempt with a bit more experience!
Enjoyed the walk, the scenery and your determination!
Thanks Bill! The scenery definitely helped with the motivation :)
The scenario along the canals are so beautiful. Nice trip! 😊
Took my mind off the pain! Cheers :)
You haven't failed! Your effort was amazing! Thank you for sharing.
Cheers for watching and for the encouragement! :)
A very brave attempt in a beautiful part of the country
Cheers Doug! Thanks for watching!
I've always loved Scotland for the fantastic scenery and friendly people, shame about the weather lol 😆
Brilliant
what an effort! that’s definitely something to be proud of, well done!
Cheers Jack! Gutted at the time, but feeling better about it now :)
You didn’t fail that was amazing well done
Cheers Jim! Feels better now looking back, but at the time I was gutted! Thanks for watching :)
I think this walk is very successful. Maybe a high-quality trainer with excellent support is the way to go. Congratulations on making it as far as you did.
Thank you very much John! Yeah, next time I'll be better prepared :)
Still a cracking achievement I would say Steve! Nice one and great scenery on the way
Cheers for that! It was still a lovely day despite not quite making it :) Thanks for watching!
Great effort, that's still a very respectful distance you did, and another great video, thank you!
Cheers Andrew!
Good job!
Thanks so much!
Good effort. Well done for getting as far as you got and thanks for posting it. Quite inspirational. My mother's folk are from rural Lanarkshire so spent time there as a kid, the thing that's always stuck in my mind from those days was the explanation my mother gave to my enquiring after the local name for the A70, the Lang Whang (the long way). She tells me it got its name because folk would walk it from Lanark, or in her family's case Carnwath, to Edinburgh and back at the weekend, to and from work. Your wee adventure has reignited my idea of walking it, doing it from Edinburgh, but now you've got me thinking Edinburgh-Lanark and then Lanark-Glasgow over two days. No established footpath would be an issue but I reckon with some due care and attention it could be done safely enough. Food for thought.
Thanks very much! Wow, folks must've been a lot fitter back in those days :) Glad to have helped inspire to do the walks, I think splitting it into 2 days makes wayyy more sense than the way I (tried) it. Good luck! I'll probably try again, but go with 2 days for sure, either camping or get a wee B&B somewhere for better comfort and a nice breakfast! Cheers for watching!
Brilliant video mate
Thanks very much Hamish!
Good for you for trying. I couldn't walk that far anymore.
Cheers Paul! I pushed it a bit far in the end, to be honest, even what I did was beyond my real limit - maybe a bike next time :)
@@steve-marsh That sounds like a great plan Steve! :-)
That was a fantastic effort Steve. Definitely not a failure. The morning canal scenes looked stunning.
Thanks so much, the morning canal mist was definitely worth getting up early for!
That is an amazing achievment, and you have inspired me to go back out onto the moors, and do the Two Moors Way Devon's coast to coast, I have done some of it, but really must get out and do some more. Its on my doorstep!! Thank you for your wonderful video
Thanks so much for watching, the best feedback is always to inspire similar adventures, thank you!!!
Thank you so much for sharing. Beautiful countryside and I hope you will make it next time.Anyway you are my hero.
Ah cheers! Thanks so much for watching, the scenery made it all worthwhile! :)
Awesome well done 😊🏅🏆
Thanks Catherine! and for the medal :) cheers for watching!
Well done a fantastic achievement 👏 fair play to you!
Cheers Pat! Thanks for watching :)
Well done !!
Thanks so much! :)
Superb effort, well done.
Cheers Paul!
Top video.
Cheers Robert!
When I saw your foot turn out the light on the Caledonian sleeper I knew I was in love
Haha cheers! 🤣
Definately not a failure, more so a great achievement and some great scenery also. Well done.
Thanks Johnny! The scenery certainly made it a little less painful!
A massive accomplishment just trying! Great video
Cheers Jim :)
Well, you gave it the old college try! Thanks for taking us along!
Cheers Bill! Tempted to try again sometime :)
Great video, Steve. Brilliant effort! Australia.
Cheers Jim! Next time I'll cycle it! :)
Fantastic video Steve - totally stunning shots of the sunrise & early morning:) Only complaint was I wish it had been a longer video! Also nice to see your subscribers numbers are rapidly rising!:)
Cheers mate - yeah, I really didn't film enough on the day, hadn't expected the scenery to be as nice to be honest, and went light with just the GoPro - next time I should dedicate more time and get a proper video out :) thanks for watching though!
thanks for your video, it made me want to visit Scotland even more
Thanks Craig! Good luck getting here soon when all these restrictions are over - I'm sure we'll appreciate it even more!
You are a star well done.
Cheers Keith!
At least you tried! It looks like a beautiful day for a walk.
Yeah true, still a lovely day to be ootside! Thanks for watching :)
Respect to you for still doing this walk...
Cheers! :)
Well done, 40+ miles is a cracking effort man!
Looked like some lovely scenery on the way too
Cheers Lee! The scenery certainly helped with the pain!
You are amazing
Mega acheivement and great views along the way. Good effort Steve and certainly not a fail in my book. I would have been well knackered after about 15 miles. If you ever try it again, perhaps do it over two or three days and enjoy it more. Thanks for the memories and happy travels. ATB Dave.
Thanks so much for watching my videos!!! Yeah, I’ll give it a bit more time next time or maybe try two wheels instead :)
Well done, great effort!
I would not see that as a fail.
Cheers Darren! It was just so tough to accept my feet wouldn't carry me there. Thanks for watching :)
Fantastic effort Steve, i know i couldn't have gone that far ! Loving all your video's :) :)
That was no failure Steve. Thanks for sharing the views of the canal and the brilliant Falkirk wheel.
Cheers Andy!
Well done Steve! I don’t know anyone who’se done something that ambitious!!
Thanks Ann, it was still a lovely walk even if I failed :D
Another awesome Steve Marsh adventure, but I learned from that 10 mile roundtrip walk to the beach I'd be hesitant to tag along with you on a "wee" walk. As always, I enjoyed the scenery. I like and respect your spirit. You're my hero.
Thanks so much! Really appreciate your support and encouragement, makes me want to get out there again NOW even though my feet wouldn’t thank you for it :)
Have another go Steve! Love the content matey. X
So admire your absolute honesty about your limitations. It would be a better world if we all did!
Cheers Peter, it was a really interesting experiment to see how far I could go, and on this route there are plenty bailing out points :)
Your a hero. I think you made a fantastic effort. I have done a few walks like that and that's why I salute you.
You know the pain! I'll try again on a longer summer day :)
Good effort mate. Still a massive walk. Between Edinburgh and Glasgow had never been my favourite part of Scotland but along the canal is beautiful. 👍🏼
Thanks mate! Yeah, I'd read some negative things about this route, but I was really impressed with the towpath - maybe on 2 wheels next time!
Steve - good evening. 42 1/2 miles is absolutely NOT a failure! That's extremely impressive and not many people would have the stamina to do what you did. My hat is off to you, if I was wearing one LOL!
We really don't know what we can accomplish unless we try. I never thought I could climb the CN Tower in Toronto (I live in the next city over) when you could do so for charity but I ended up doing it 12 years in a row!
Keep up the great videos!
well done steve for giving it a go hope ur feet where ok
That's an impressive achievement. I walked from Stirling Castle to Edinburgh Castle so can appreciate what you went through, good job man!
Ohhh that would have made a much cooler video! Great work :)
Hi,
In my eyes you did Absoloutley great achieving what you did.😘🏴
Not a fail at all. Loved the scenery on your trek.
Xx
Thanks for the encouragement Molly :) That scenery kept me going! Thanks for watching :)
I took my bike serviced in juniper green, hoping to ride from Union Canal to Glasgow next week. Admire you gave it a go regardless of what lies ahead! Well done! This surely a success!
Good luck with it, that's definitely how I'll go next time! Cheers
Thats not a fail...only about 1 % of people could do that..and that might be a stretch....what you did is legendary
Good effort a long way !
Cheers! :)
You are a brave man Steve and I love your videos. It so happens that my late wife is from Falkirk and I’m from Larkhall, so this walk was of great interest to me. Keep going, Steve. I love your videos. 🇨🇦🏴
Thanks so much Jack! It was a lovely day, so nothing lost being out there on the lovely canal path :)
Great effort with some beautiful photography . Not all in vain
True Willie, still managed to squeeze a wee video out of it! :) Cheers!
I’m impressed!! Far better than I would have done. And such a pretty walk!
Cheers Kevin! The scenery was all that kept my old legs going :)
Been enjoying your channel as a half Scottish southerner. That's some bloody distance in a day. No shame there :-)
Cheers for that! Yeah, it feels a bit better now, but was gutted at the time! Thanks for watching my videos, really appreciated!
You did well, better luck next time!
Cheers! I now have a target to repeat it, maybe in summer though!
Certainly, impressive Steve!!!! Nothing to feel ashamed about!!!! Most of us couldn't do what you did!!!!
Thanks so much! Even what I managed was still really too far for me, lots of pain over the weekend! :)
Well done! 42.5 miles! I could never walk that far, even in my younger days.
Thanks Frank! I really pushed it past my limit, suffered all weekend! :)
That was no fail Steve, huge Congratulations to you.👍👍
I can almost still feel the pain!
What do they say.. No pain no gain. They must be mad. Haha
Definitely not a fail, bloody amazing distance 👏👏👏
Oh it was hard to stop, but not as hard as continuing would have been! Cheers
Top effort!! you got a lot further than I would have done
Cheers mate! Really appreciate and thanks for watching :)
