Walking from Edinburgh to Aberdour via the Forth Bridges - we know how to celebrate 15k subs :)

  • Getting to 15k subscribers was a big deal for me. So when we had a Friday off with nothing to do, we decided to go for a 15 mile walk to celebrate - yes we know how to party :D Our only plan was to head north as it would take us out over the Forth Bridges, but our 15 mile calculation didn't quite take us where we wanted to go - so how far did we end up walking???
Walk recorded on Friday 4th June 2021.

What wonderful content, presented by a thoroughly likable pair. I have watched this video two or three times, now. I get more enjoyment out of watching one of Steve's videos for the second or third time than watching most other videos for the first time. It's kind of like re-experiencing a favorite walking route versus a new, dull one. Sometimes you just know that you can't go wrong. I even sit through the commercials instead of skipping them, knowing it helps Steve (and sometimes Alicja) to keep traveling and to share their experiences with the world.

This was so lovely to watch as I have so many fun memories from my childhood of the two original bridges whenever I visited my Scottish grandparents in Fife (good ol' Dunfermline and inverkeithing). Hope to get back there some day. Best wishes Steve from across the channel and congrats on the milestone !

Great walk Steve that takes a big heart for the two of you to stick with it. My first time over the Forth Bridge would have been Dec. 1964 my father was a haulier and would take fish down to Joe Appleby in North Shields. Thanks for a really enjoyable video. My wife and I love the Fife area and have walked part of the Fife Coastal Path between Lower Largo and Crail. We would love to see your treatment of this which would certainly be a good watch. You might even fancy doing the chain walk near Elie! Having completed the 15 mile target on this video though I think that I would have headed for Inverkeithing station instead of continuing to Aberdour!

That would have been a good idea Bob - we certainly reached our limit! We did a wee video on the chain walk too - what a great place, and the coastline just gets better as you head east - we really must do the whole thing when we have some time off together :)

Congratulations on reaching your 15,000! I'm sure there are a lot more people who'd be fascinated by your posts.
There's nothing more fatiguing than walking the pavements of busy suburban roads, my feet ached in sympathy with you two, but what a gem of a celebratory video!
I had no idea you could walk over the Forth road bridge, and what amazing views you get of "the" Forth Bridge from there.
I remember queuing to cross on the car ferry at South Queensferry with my parents after staying the night in Edinburgh en route to a walking holiday in Strathpeffer. That was in the July of 1964, so it must have been just before that first road bridge was opened.
What spectacular pictures of the railway bridge you took from North Queensferry, the buildings in the foreground gave a real idea of the scale of the structure, and what an attractive little waterside town it is. Loved the permanent graffiti from the sailors of 1771 "We wuz 'ere", they weren't going to be forgotten!
The shipbreakers at Inverkeithing was originally part of the "empire" of Thomas W Ward of Sheffield and was set up after the First World War. Many famous ships met their end there, mostly warships, not surprising, given its proximity to Rosyth. These included the original of the famous "Dreadnoughts" in 1923, and post World War II, the pride of the Royal Navy, including "Nelson" and "Rodney", sister ships of the ill-fated "Hood". Liners included in 1937, the hull of the RMS "Olympic", a sister ship of the "Titanic", and Cunard's second "Mauritania" in 1965. It's a bit of a comedown to be breaking up family saloons nowadays!
Incidentally I've been watching Paul Murtons "Grand Tours of Scotland's Lochs" and caught the one where he visits the "lost" lochs of Edinburgh: Nor' Loch, once a partial moat for Edinburgh Castle, which became a cesspit and was drained to provide the space where Princes Street Gardens and Waverley Station now stand, and Burgh Loch, now parkland, which I believe you drove around in your video in the snow earlier in the year. He also visited a very attractive "Doctors Garden" on the shores of one of the Moorfoot Reservoir "lochs".
Looking forward to the "Fife Coastal Path" adventure. That should be interesting.

@@steve-marsh I think it's interesting, the way you do it ,"Just go out there and see what happens.".and so obviously do many other people. If anything attracts your interest, you can always check it out later, or nowadays on the spot on your mobile. That was some trip to Strathpeffer. My Dad thought we'd got it nailed when we reached Edinburgh (beautiful drive up through the Borders), but there was a lot more driving to do up into the Highlands via Perth and Inverness. And we were in the old VW van he used for business - nothing like as comfortable as your "customised conveyance"!

Great stuff Steve and those miles are very good going, weirdly enough I was watching a show a few weeks back all about the Forth bridges, was really good but sadly was saying about some men that lost their lives building it.
Been to South Queensferry a few times but never North, those stairs you went up reminded me of the Wallace Monument, bit touristy but still worth a visit if you've not already done it.
