  • Alicja was to blame for this idea, so I wasn't doing it without her :) Join us as we try to tour five bridges as featured on the Bank of Scotland £5, £10, £20, £50 and £100 notes. Spoiler alert - they are not situated close to each other! In this video we'll drive bridges, walk bridges, see trains crossing bridges and question whether bridges even are bridges. All in a two-day dash round Scotland :)

Hi, I’m Steve, a travel reviewer from Scotland. Join me on my adventures as I discover my own country, often visiting places for the first time, so hopefully it's as much of an eye-opener for you as it is for me! Don't expect expert opinion, just a very honest journey of discovery. Sometimes featuring my intrepid sidekick Alicja, sometimes featuring adventures beyond the borders of Scotland. Enjoy!

The Kessock Bridge will always be my favourite. When I used to come up here on holiday, before I moved up permanently, I used to love that view you get of the bridge as you start heading downhill on the A9 towards Inverness. Seeing it meant that we weren't far from our destination and it used to make my heart sing even more than passing the "Welcome to Scotland" sign on the M6 😊

When you venture back to Alloway you'll have to check out the Alloway tunnel. We discovered it by accident in January. There's a path across from the burns centre, down a small slope, that leads you to the tunnel. It's filled with "amusing" graffiti. Apparently, the people behind the Colinton tunnel are going to do the same with it. It's worth a walk and look.

If you look closely at the Glenfinnan viaduct the Mallaig end is slightly higher than the Fort William end so the engine has to work hard on the way out but the return trip is downhill at that point. Another great way to watch the train is to get one of the cruises from Fort William that will chase the train along the coast (for a short bit, it can't keep up).

To answer why was there a diesel tacked on to the rear of the train on the viaduct I believe it is a safety precaution just in case the steam train should break down, I have seen a few heritage rail videos and they all seem to do this. Lovely to see you both in this video and I wish you both good health, till next time stay safe and cheers.

When I saw the Brig O'Doon, I had an ah-ha moment when I realized it was the name of the fictitious place (Brigadoon) in the US musical "Finian's Rainbow" (How Are Things in Glocca Morra" and all that). The musical was from 1947 (the year I was born!), and a movie of it with Petula Clark was made in 1968. More useless information....our high school staged the musical when I was a senior (1965) and I played Susan, the deaf girl. How's that for TMI? Another former South Queensferry resident here, just along the road at Linn Mill !!
Once while visiting the newsagent in the High St, I literally bumped into Jim Kerr lead singer with Simple Minds, who also lived in the village !!
Sadly never bumped into a certain SM he was probably busy with his Go Pro !!
That was some driving weekend, must have been over 500 miles, just as well you didnae walk it..... like the Proclaimers !! Groan, oh my goodness they get worse !!
Enjoyed the vid you guys.....thank you !!👍😂

Great vid Steve, interesting and entertaining. Many fond memories of Ayr and Alloway, where as a youngster had some exciting times. Oh and don’t forget to visit the electric brae when you go back to Ayr. Some folks might find that fun.

Scottish bridges also featured on UK postage stamps. There is the Forth Road Bridge from a 1964 issue, Aberfeldy Bridge in 1968 and Craigellachie Bridge in Moray, in 2015. Far less expensive than the banknotes collection. :)

What a fun trip this was! It makes the bucket list of returning all the more strong. Maybe next year for my 6oth birthday! I must admit, I was THRILLED when I saw you stopped in Ayr/Alloway. that is where my cousins live (I am American and My grandparent's came from that area) anyhow - Brigadoon I last saw in 1974! My cousin was married in the venue that is located right next to the bridge, and grew up literally around the corner from Burns cottage. They will be coming to Michigan in 2 weeks!! 😃

Thanks for a wonderful video Steve. It brought back memories of taking my parents on tours around Scotland, we've visited every place you showed in the vid over the years and boy how some of them have changed. One of the last places we visited before we lost mum in 2020 was the Falkirk Wheel and the Kelpies, we took the barge trip up the wheel and I still remember the look on her face when she realised we were "floating" literally in mid-air "Priceless" You must take the trip when you go back there and fingers crossed it will be a sunny day as the views are spectacular. When you do get that way again can I recommend visiting The Bo'ness & Kinneil Railway 👌Looking forward to your next video 👍
