- After dropping off my van for its service and MOT, I was stuck south of Edinburgh with little idea of what to do for a few hours. Then I remembered I was pretty close to one of the finest examples of Gothic architecture anywhere in the UK, a very famous place I'd never been to before! So join me as I set off in search of Rosslyn Chapel where there's a big treat in store when I'm invited back after hours to explore it all on my own! (Filming at the chapel is not normally permitted, so this was my chance to get a rare glimpse inside captured on camera for you to see exclusively here on my RUclips channel) :)

The architecture inside Roslin Chapel is absolutely stunning. I've never seen anything as nice.
And the outside too. I was last there 17 years ago and it was enveloped by scaffolding, and i'm slightly shocked by how beautiful the exterior is.

I was saddened to hear that William the cat has passed. I remember seeing him lying on a pew cushion and looking up at us as if to say “Welcome to my home....but don’t bother me. I’m napping in the sunshine.” Rosslyn Chapel is a special place. It feels warm and caring. I want to go back. Thank you for letting me see it again.

Heartbroken to learn about William’s passing. I spent a few minutes with him when I visited. I was missing my cats. Rosslyn is one of my favorite places in Scotland. It’s so beautiful and intricate. ❤️🏴

What a stunning building
Before the modern visitor centre and shop was built I found myself walking around Roslyn on my own and down in the crypt . I felt nothing but peace and serenity very moving experience .
That would have been wonderful!
This chapel is such a beautiful and unique building. What an inspiration to fill in a "spare" day with a visit, and what a coup to be able to film inside during the hours of darkness, which served to concentrate even more the atmosphere of this amazing place. Rosslyn has fascinated me since i first read about it many years ago as a then little-known location in one of Ian Rankin's "Rebus" novels. Later there was a TV programme in which the Countess described the extensive and complex restoration work that the chapel was then undergoing.
This was before it gained worldwide fame through the "Da Vinci Code". A colleague at work, having been totally taken in by it, lent me the book to read during a boring night shift, but apart from anything else, I lost credibility in the story when it reached London, and I was unable to believe the hero's unfeasible ability to dash about between locations, catch taxis, etc. in the nick of time: It felt as if these chapters were written using an A-Z street guide, rather than from actual experience of the constant traffic gridlock which slows the average speed of most journeys in the city to little more than walking pace!
I hope that your van passed its MOT, and we'll be treated to more of your fascinating adventures around the beauties of Scotland in the coming year!.

I have a family connection with the chapel. My Grandfather was the guide back in the 1960's and he was presented to the Queen when she visited. Our family often visited the chapel, including for the midnight service on Christmas Eve, which was very special - all this long before it became famous.
A midnight Christmas church service in Rosslyn Chapel sounds absolutely magical. What a luscious family memory to have and hold.
This was certainly a totally unexpected treat! Thanks, Steve. The chapel is both smaller yet more impressive than I expected. The amount of skilled workmanship in gothic buildings is mind boggling.

Nice shout out to Robert Burns on his Birthday! I hear 25th of January is a celebrated day in Scotland. I'm recalling when I was in community college, art appreciation class, there was a few weeks of study on older building architecture. Specific topics of knowing what particular shapes, curves, points were used in which era. Very amazing how the builders were able to create such detail so long ago and still standing proud. That sure is nice countryside. Cool clean air. Thanks for sharing, very nice video. Couple other shout outs to Robert Burns in the other comments. Cool!

What a nice surprise. You can take me along on Journeys like that any old time you want. I don't know you well enough to know whether you would like the book or the movie but I did. Normally I'm more of a shooting, car chase movie type person but this one I really enjoyed so thank you again for taking us with you and thank whoever gave filming permission. Rosslyn Chapel is absolutely amazing. The tribute to the Rosslyn Chapel cat, William, at the end actually brought tears to my eyes. Yes, I am a cat person. Give Alicja a hello for me. Great video Steve. Those marks on the stones in the crypt are probably mason's marks. Each stonemason had his own individual mark that he used on the stones that he carved or dressed so that he was paid by piece.

I had looked at filming Rosslyn Chapel once, but when I saw online photography wasn't permitted, that scuppered that idea. You're the man with the contacts and the charm to have doors opened. Another excellent video.

So good that the film led to better upkeep of the chapel. Another Tom Hanks project, From the Earth to the Moon, funded some Apollo era hardware restorations including a Lunar Module that would have been the cancelled Apollo 19.

Great way to waste a day away Steve. I went many years ago and got some pretty good pictures. Wee bit of history the St. Clairs (later Sinclairs) had a long history in Scotland, with roots in the Orkney Islands and Norway. One William St. Clair fought at the Battle of Hastings alongside his cousin, William the Conqueror, and later gained the barony of Rosslyn from King Malcolm Canmore of Scotland. Another William St. Clair was one of the lords assigned to bring Robert the Bruce's heart to the Holy Land, but he was killed in Spain en route.
The William St. Clair who built Rosslyn Chapel had grandiose plans. He intended to create the Collegiate Chapel of St. Matthew, the centerpiece of an educational institution. He founded the town of Rosslyn (now Roslin) to house his workers, hired master masons at a salary of £40 a year and oversaw the creation of a beautiful gothic building with a profusion of carving. Work on the chapel continued for nearly 40 years.

Catching up with some of your older videos. Big mistake my wife and I made when we were at Rosslyn Chapel many years ago - the outside was covered in scaffolding and it was on a Sunday - no tours, but we could have attended services. We chose not to attend services are we are not locals - turns out there were very few people attending services and we would have been welcome. Live and learn - we didn't want to intrude, but instead, we could have been part of the community. Hope your van passed MOT.

Visited in 2021 on a very hot day with a fair few folk milling about, then a big group arrived as we were going out, we were thankful to get the opportunity to see the place not too packed, but wow how lucky were you, at night and to yourself. It was so much to take in. My neck was hurting from looking up! Bought some things in the shop including a book about William the cat and had a lovely coffee. Thanks for the video.

I was inspired to visit this after seeing the Davici Code with Tom Hanks , they laid on a really good tour
A highly spiritual place my partner and I visited in 2003 when it was being restored. There was a false roof over the whole building supported on scaffold and visitors were welcome to climb the scaffold up to the gutter line, so we saw the outside in detail, and the inside including the crypt. We took a heap of photos, all on film; and visited the rudimentary visitors centre to see plans for the future visitors centre shown here.
Apparently the restoration, including the false roof, was in progress during the period THAT BOOK was written, but there is no mention of it in the book.
I cannot recommend a visit to Rosslyn Chapel highly enough, it was a highlight of our visit to Scotland and ranked with Skara Brae on Orkney.

I was an extra in the The DaVinci Code. Pretty much precisely where you are at 9:08 is where Hanks was sitting alone in between scenes. I went across to where he was and shook his hand and had a chat with him.

Wow, Steve what a find, that stunning Rosslyn family Chapel was absolutely beautiful and the architecture was just amazing, it was as if you had time traveled back through the Legendary Standing Stones at Craigh na Dun, as Claire did in the romantic series ‘Outlander’ to meet her destiny Jamie Fraser a dashing Scottish highland warrior, what a privilege to be allowed to film inside that magnificent building, it must have felt a wee bit eerie being all alone, you always go that extra mile and come up trumps for your followers Steve, thank you 🙏 for this unexpected treat “👌”

Visited the Chapel at the beginning of December on one of the night visits it was really interesting and very atmospheric and had a great guide to tell us all about it. To top it all came out and the snow was falling. Some great photos in and out. (You are allowed to photograph on night visits.

You may remember me Robbie P from Oxford telling you about my up and coming trip on the Caledonian sleeper trip from Inverness to London on the 15th of February this year in memory of my dad. Unfortunately BA have cancelled my flight to Inverness and they don’t seem to be flying there anymore. So instead and to be honest this is a better trip I will be flying to Edinburgh instead having a few hours in Edinburgh then heading up to Inverness on the train in the afternoon. So I can get to see the lovely highlands of Scotland. Before my trip back to London. So if you fancy a lunchtime pint or two on me and of course Alicja is more than welcome to. That was a beautiful wee chapel indeed! The gothic era ones are truly oustanding in the lightness their design suggests. Living near Cologne, I have a superb example of that near my place, only the Cologne cathedral turned all murky with the dirty soot laden air here.

@@steve-marsh Well, there are some must-sees there. The Cologne Cathedral is a stunning piece of architecture and a mind blowing beauty. Yes, you really _must_ come and see it! They do guided tours which I heard are pretty fascinating. As the history of this cathedral's construction spanned from 1237 until the late nineteenth century, there are a lot of stories to tell. One of the towers is accessible for visitors and provides a smashing view over Cologne and the surroundings, you must not miss this, too.
Smack bang next to it is the "Römisch-Germanisches Landesmuseum", the Roman-Germanian museum, which is a must see as well, a stunning collection of Roman and ancient native artefacts.
The Altstadt, Cologne's "Old Town" (Built after Cologne had been levelled in WWII) is a nice area for having a beer and a good bite to eat for pretty much touristy prices. The nice thing with Cologne is that all these sites are within easy walking distance, even if you are handicapped. Flying in via Cologne airport, you take one of several trains connecting the airport to the central station, and when you exit it towards the city centre, you basically are at the foot of the cathedral. If you follow the street between central station and cathedral to the right there, you arrive at the Gaffel brewery, in my opinion the only really tasty choice of Cologne's own traditional beers, the Kölsch beer. They do brilliant local dishes as well, and all for decent prices. Immediately behind the cathedral you find the museum and to the left of the cathedral there is a passage to the old town. Maybe five minutes of walking or so.
The Cologne Zoo is nice, but, well, a zoo. I haven't been there in over twenty years as the entrance fee is just bonkers. From the zoo, a gondola rope car crosses river Rhine. May be nice for some pictures of the city from above and as a funfair ride. I haven't been on it yet.
If you are into playing any instruments, the Cologne Music Store is a must see Especially their guitar department. Bring *lots* of money! At the former airport of Cologne, Butzweiler Hof, a car museum was opened which I was told is pretty nice, but I haven't been there myself yet.
A Gestapo prison has been preserved as museum. A reminder of the worst of Germany's history and deeply depressing place. Noteworthy place, but not at all fun. Not for the faint hearted.
Fans of historic weapons will like the Zeughaus Museum, where centuries of weapons development are displayed. Not exactly a big museum, but surely interesting for some.
A touristy visitor should avoid the Cologne Carnival. If you are not into seeing the kind of party that inspired the Mallorcans to wish to get rid of tourists, Cologne Carnival isn't your thing. It deteriorated a lot in the recent decades, has become a boozefest of sorts with all the nasty side effects.
All in all and except for its gems, Cologne looks like the hurriedly built city it is. As over 92% of the buildings were destroyed in WWII (Swallow that, whiny single-raid Dresdnerian pussies! 😝) the majority of the city is early post war style and not exactly charming.
There's a lot of night life if you don't happen to have a fatal plague roaming the planet, but it's nothing you don't find elsewhere. As Cologne is Germany's gay capital, gays will find lots of clubs and bars and enjoy Cologne's annual Christopher Street Day parade. This is not just a pride-do for gays, they welcome everybody. A very different kind of carvnival in summer, but worth seeing. Partly better fun than the carnival, and less risk of sexual assault for women.
You can get the most interesting bits of Cologne seen in a day. I live some 20 kilometres south of Cologne in Troisdorf, and I don't even go there for shopping, this is how uninteresting I find the rest of the city. I actually haven't been there in 3 years and only went there for work back then.
A reason to book a hotel might be to hop on a train on the second day and pop over to Bonn, which I personally like much better. There's Beethoven's birth house, the central building of the University of Bonn, the Rheinisches Landesmuseum with a long term exhibition about the Neanderthalians, a nice city centre with good places to have a bite to eat. At the end of the Poppelsdorfer Allee, basically a stretched bit of park, you have the botanic garden at the Poppelsdorfer Schloss. They have a nice collection of exotic plants.
The University's central building at the other end of Poppelsdorfer Allee is where Konrad Röntgen discovered X-rays and among others Karl Marx studied.
Line 66 of the tram crosses river Rhine and takes you to Königswinter in a 20 minutes drive or so. There you can walk up mount… erm, hill Drachenfels . There's a very touristically exploited castle ruin on top, which is said to have been the castle of Nibelung Saga's Siegfried. Half way up there's a wee zoo, a nice stop. Haven't been there in ages, no idea what they have on display there nowadays.
From Either Cologne or Bonn, you can join river tours on passenger boats. A nicely lazy way of passing a day and seeing the nicest bits of the Rhine valley. My parents took me on such a trip when I still was in primary school age, I have no idea what the prices for these tours are nowadays. To get a feeling for the region, this may be a nice way of travelling and just having a good look at the landscape.
Outside the towns and cities, the Rhineland and Eifel landscapes are pretty beautiful, a nice region for bicycle tours and hiking. The odd bits of medieval towns survived here and there, some really nice towns. Many of the old buildings fell victim to the war, though.
Bad Münstereifel and Monschau would be towns to visit. In normal times they are real little gems but they won't be appealing to tourists for another year or two, last July 2021's flood has stricken them pretty badly. They yet have to recover.
…and that's all I can think of for now, really! 🤔🤗

That was really a fantastic video. The wee chapel is absolutely beautiful in the evening light. I love the stories of old historical buildings and the touch of mysticism that surrounds them. Were you told there was no Stained glass windows. I ask because just down the road from you Arbroath Abbey had huge stained glass windows way before Roslyn was built. Enjoyed you video as always.

Very interesting, Steve. Hoping to get over to Scotland for my 80th birthday in May and this will definitely be on our list of places to visit. You referenced Burns again; we couldn’t find any haggis here in Belize, but we did have a lovely dram of Macallan Quest single malt to toast the bard.
When you come here you won’t be disappointed. I hope you get here and have a great time.

The strange marks on the crypt walls are Stonemasons marks, Master Stonemasons had their own marks which they inscribed onto the blocks they carved, like a stamp or "signature."
