We took our kayak out on the Forth to take a closer look at the abandoned island of Inchmickery.

With paddling one of the few activities permitted at the moment, we packed up the kayak and headed out into the frigid waters of the river Forth to get a closer look at one of its islands - Inchmickery. An RSPB reserve, Inchmickery is now home to seabirds but once had a key role in protecting the river, the city of Edinburgh and the dockyard at Rosyth throughout both world wars.
Join us on a perfect morning, albeit a little bit cold, as we paddle around 8 kilometres from another island (Cramond), step ashore at Inchmickery to solve a wee problem and then head back freezing cold to the shore :)
We hope you enjoy our morning out on the water!

I love islands, which is your favourite in the world and why?
Orkneys, Skara Brae . Skye my brother lives there and I live in Vancouver and we are both getting old
This seems to be the section for Wards to comment! Of the islands I've seen, Nantucket (Massachusetts) would be a contender for its quaintness, ocean scenery and fine whaling museum. At the top of my must-see list is Islay--and not just for whisky. Quaint whitewashed villages, the round church in Bowmore, sandy beaches, the home of the Lord of the Isles, sea birds, the Kildalton Cross, fresh sea food...and yes, Bunnahabhain! What's your favorite, Steve?
@@susanward398 It's my absolute dream to visit Nantucket (and Martha's Vineyard too), looking at the price of accommodation is the only thing that ever puts me off! Any subscribers from there that could accommodate me in their garage?! :) I love Islay and its closest neighbour Jura too, been there many a time! My favourite - ohhh that's a tricky one, but the island to blow my mind the most would have to be Mykines in the Faroe Islands - I really need to make a video from there. I remember I flew in by helicopter (about £10!) and then was meant to get the boat back but the weather was too bad so ended up sleeping in an old ruin in the rain! It was in May so there were literally thousands of puffins all around, the most magical place I've ever been for sure, just wish I'd had a camera with me!
@@steve-marsh Nantucket, Martha's Vineyard and much of neighboring Cape Cod have become playgrounds for the rich. Camping, VRBO or Airbnb might be an alternative to pricier lodgings. Try to fly into Providence, rather than Boston. You'll avoid a lot of traffic. A car will probably be necessary. Catch the ferry in Hyannis for day trips to Nantucket or MV. The Faroe Islands look bleak and daunting! It would be good to learn what is appealing there (besides puffins). If you were to do a video on Islay that focused less on whisky and more on other features of the island, I think it would be well received. I enjoy a "wee dram" now and then, but would not want to spend entire days touring multiple distilleries--which most Islay videos focus on. Probably some other viewers feel the same way. Jura seems wilder and less accessible (just one road?), so a video on it would be informative. Won't it be great when we can travel again?
Rottnest island just off the coast of Perth Western Australia not far from where I currently live in the Weatbelt
You've got a diamond there Steve, carry's, rows, gets wet and pumps the kayak up while you take it easy, lucky man. Interesting video, enjoyed it.
Haha when I was editing this one I realised that too 😆
@@steve-marsh Poor Alicja seems to get the vworst of it. 😁😁
Wow, your companion was probably thinking “well, this is another fine mess you’ve gotten me into!” 😂. Glad it all turned out well, the views were great, I could almost feel the brisk sea air.
Hahaha! Love it! :D
What a great partener Alicija is absolutely perfect in every way ...brave... strong and happy to make great video content like this one ..
well done Team Steve Marsh staring Alicija ....fearless companion
😊😊😊😊😊🤗🤗🤗🤗😅😅😅
big effort guys wintry ice.. well timed and no mishaps. 😃
I have never seen the Forth so calm and I have steamed up and down the Forth a number of times. I was concerned about the strength of the tide, but you handled it very well!
Cheers Murray! Yes, we waited patiently for conditions like that but didn’t expect it to be quite so good! I used to sail on the forth a lot as a younger lad so we kept the currents very much in mind.
@@PepRex How exactly?
I do so love your soft Scottish accent and such else chosen music It compliments the scenery so well. 😊
Famous last words 😅
You both done great guys well done 👏
What a good sport she is ..
The island looks foreboding. It does have a remarkable profile of a battleship. A clever illusion.
Such a brave trip. Not for the faint of heart. Well done for surviving.
At one point I feared you would need to call out a lifeboat and be featured on “Saving Lives at Sea”. 🥴👏👏
Well done the waters were kind that day, great enjoy the soup🍵
Brilliant video mate ! Love this kind of content
Cheers James! :)
Yep, another gem of a video. Can’t WAIT for you and “the landlady” to go wild camping on Hirta ( and I don’t mean the one on Skye ! )
“
Cheers Tony! Ohhhh that trip is very much the dream, but now you've got me thinking of staying there overnight what a great idea!!!
Again...I'm such a fan of Alicia. I love you Steve. But Alicia is a girl after my own heart. This was a great video. I appreciate how you edit these videos. Thank you.
Haha I can understand that :)
Great adventure you guys, making the most of life and living it, keep doing what you’re doing, love your videos ❤️🏴❤️
Thanks so much Jane! Really appreciate that comment :)
Love the sound of the curlews, Steve. So pleased you’re able to break out and explore, I’ve really enjoyed watching the views and light
Cheers Martin, glad you enjoyed it! Was a fun wee adventure, but was also nice to be back in the warm afterwards! Keen to get out in some lochs whenever we can travel further afield again!
Hi you two .there are pills that you can take to combat this madness you have ,but it was a brill vlog .keep em coming.
Gosh, you're both very brave! When Alicja said shall we go under here and you said no way, and then ......... Hahaha. Glad you did, nice to see the shots. It's an extraordinary island, thanks for sharing with us. I felt so sorry for you in your wet clothes ... so cold 🥶 Hope the soup warmed you up! 🥰
A really interesting video to watch. I remember those feeling of freezing hands, from my days of riding my motorbike. I would get off my bike after a winter's run out, and not feel any part of my body for sometime, and when things did return to normal....oh the pain. Thank you both once again for a great video.
Thanks Sandra - oh yes, the hands are the first to suffer, especially on a motorbike or even pushbike! Cheers, hope you’re doing well :)
Jolly fine stuff. Thank you very much.
Thanks Ian!
Yay! I made it click over to 500 likes😉👍. Beautiful calm day there😍‼️
Billy, thanks so much! I never time my likes that well :)
You two are so cute.
Looks like a fun adventure day.
Blessed to get to watch the fun (and challenges).
👍👍👍
Awww thanks so much! Was great fun but boy was it good to be back home and have a hot shower after!
Thoroughly enjoyed the video during my lunch break. As a youngster I had many happy summer holidays across the water in Burntisland, Pettycur and Kinghorn, but we never explored the Edinburgh coast, so these vids make for good viewing for that reason, as well as being well produced, entertaining and informative.
Cheers James! I remember similar holidays on the Fife coast as a kid, always enjoyed them!
It was interesting to see your journey. It reminded me of visiting the island of Spinalonga.
Another great video Steve.nice to see ure good lady doing all the head work.🤣🤣🤣.cheers 🍺🍺
Oh Derek, she really was the captain that day :)
Good video, it did look so cold,
Enjoyed the video 😊
What a great wee adventure Steve - thanks for sharing this. It's a real shame you guys couldn't light a bonfire òn the beach at the end there - then you'd have been able to have your kayak & heat it !! Geddit ??!! 😱😱
Haha love it 😆 your comment is on fire 🔥
Heavens! You were lightly dressed to take that trip on. Speaking as a seakayaker, and poor weather forecast I wouldn’t be in less than wind and waterproof top and legs over thermal layers. Preferably a dry suit in an open kayak. Nor in a craft that might deflate! (I reckon the cold water decreased the volume of air your first pumped in). Glad you got away with your lives intact. There are loads of experienced seakayakers on that stretch of coast. Have a chat with them before going out again.
Cheers, yes we had some waterproofs in our dry bag just in case as the bad forecast was just for rain rather than increase in wind speed. To be honest, we'd love drysuits etc and it's more that we can't afford them, but certainly wouldn't be doing an open river trip in anything other than benign weather. Was fun, but good to be back on dry land again :)
@@steve-marsh . Aye, well mind how you go, and look out the SKyrs paddling out of North Berwick. Best of luck.
Another great video thanks
Cheers, glad you enjoyed it!
Another great video. Thanks both 👍🏻
Thanks so much Brian!
Great video! Looks so much fun! ☺️
Thanks 😆 it was a fun trip, but so cold afterwards and still feel the pain today!
Great fun… Thanks for sharing ❤️

Wow! Absolutely Fantastic, you guys rock.👍
Aw cheers mate!
Great stuff Steve! Very different for sure and thoroughly enjoyed the content and banter.
Cheers Marc, glad you enjoyed it!
That was very entertaining Steve, I did something similar with my daughter last year off dunseverick harbour in the north Antrim coast. She still mentions it. Great stuff Steve, keep on exploring. 👍👍
Haha awesome! Thanks so much Marcus :)
well done yet again for another brilliant video. kudos to your lady, brave lass!!
She still says yes to these crazy ideas Geoff, will she ever learn? 🤷♂️😆
Love watching your adventures, loving the great outdoors on our doorstep. Keep it up!
Cheers Derek! :)
Absolutely brilliant video guys. Such a great presentational style and great team effort again. I've often wondered what Inchmickery was like.Thank you.
Cheers Julian! A pleasure to be able to take you a bit closer to the awesome island! Thanks so much!

Gripping suspenseful adventure!! Beautiful scenery, fun wildlife, calm water.... Wonderful video.
Cheers Inga! Was a fun couple of hours, but was also nice to be back in the warm eating soup! :)
Really enjoyed this always wanted to see Inchmickery up close you guys are unreal
Thanks so much David! A fun morning out on that unusually calm water!
Korcula in Croatia is just stunning, yes a holiday destination, but full of beauty and history, and amazing turquoise seas 😎😎😎
Oh I've long thought about a visit to Croatia, you've just bumped it further up the list!
Another well constructed video - flown over this island and wondered about the history - thanks for explaining it. Good camera work too !
Cheers John! I’ll definitely be looking out the window at the island next time we get the opportunity to fly :)
Beautiful scenery of your majestic land of Scotland. Thanks for posting it.
Thanks for watching! It was a fun few hours and great to get out on such a calm day!
Great video really enjoyed a view of the Forth we don't normally see thanks
Cheers Jim! Thanks for watching :)
Loved it, totally nuts on a freezing morning but great views
Hah cheers Alister! :)
I really enjoyed your video Steve. It really made me appreciate my warm and dry lockdowned home. It looked like great fun!
Ha cheers Geoff! Was great fun to make but also lovely to be back home again with the heating on 😆
Very enjoyable video and such "Shalom Bayis". Wonderful to see.
Aww thanks Reb! 😊
Outstanding
Cheers! :)
@@steve-marsh I love your videos Steve . My dad flew in Scotland in late World War 11 training He tore up St Andrews Golf Course in a Mustang, why they did that used to put a smile on his face . I am closing on 60, He loved Scotland passionately.
I do too, I love the accent & the redheads & the lack of people up North. I like do here & in New Zealand. I love the atmosphere of the place. During the lockdown we discovered a bush wonderland near my house in Melbourne , bush tracks, a few native animals, . Here you can walk about 30 miles at least from basically a beach to the city following the Dandenong Valley . Have walked some of it but there are interconnecting tracks that take you can follow. The weather is friendlier here though normally.
Love the video ! Cracking content as always :-) Nice that you had calm water and looks like you had planned it well. Take care guys - from Fife
Cheers! We almost made it over to your side 😆
Loved watching this. I had a few heart palpitations there during a few spots but you made it back! Braver than me. ❤
Thanks Janice :) It was a fun trip but equally good to be back in the warmth eating soup!
Great video Steve
Cheers Pete!
Well done indeed....you guys are daft!
Haha cheers Peter!
Awesome buddy keep them coming.
Cheers! :)
Watching from the warmth and comfort of my living room was brilliant. Going out there and actually doing it must be amazing. Thanks for a wonderful entertaining video. You are both very brave. Keep doing it!
Cheers Peter! Ohhh can still feel the cold from that one!
Glad you finally got out in the Kayak 👌 great video 😊
Cheers! It was great to be out on the water on such a calm day!
Great video Steve, loved it. 02:29 what a shot.......
Cheers Brian! :)
Great effort thanks for showing us the island It did look cold good job guys 👍🏴😎
Thanks so much! Was a fun excursion, but oh so cold!!!
Love your sheer grit and the supreme variety of your blogs! Heart, soul, puddin & guts!
Haha well said Norman, cheers!
Great video Steve! Sure looked cold though! brrr Stay safe! All the best!
Cheers! Oh it was great to be back in the warm eating homemade soup!
Great video and your both very brave or slightly mad!!
Cheers Andrew 🤪
Lovely video and look so calm and peaceful out on the water, loved the cormorants. But I couldn’t help thinking your feet must have been freezing
So true Chris! I could barely feel them afterwards, but was definitely worth it :)
I enjoyed it Thank you for sharing! I was a bit nervous for you both tho and was relived when you got back to the beach!!! Beautiful wildlife to see and really cool ruins... to bad you were unable to explore!!!
Stay safe
With love
Bye for now

Washington State 🇺🇸
Thanks so much Kathy! Hope all is well with you in beautiful Washington :)
What a great adventure!!
Under the pier was a great addition lol......
That would be a great island to explore, bet those buildings could tell a story!!
Cheers Darren! I took a lot of convincing to go under that pier 😆 oh, I’d love to explore it a bit further, but there is some treasure hidden there somewhere :)
Great video Steve, that's probably the flattest the forth has been for quite some time. Would like to see that again in summer.
Same Bob! Would love to do a summer paddle again and maybe make it to Inchcolm/Inchkeith as well :)
Great video . I personally like planning well in terms of right equipment etc but kudos to you for not making a clock bait out of it 👌
Cheers for that, yes, I actually thought I'd planned it quite thoroughly but it was silly to forget the gloves! Thankfully though that was more of an uncomfortable thing rather than unsafe :) Thanks, hope you're doing well!
Good Videos....Just started watching your videos and given me some ideas for things to do locally when we can move around again....Have cycled from bo'ness to Edinburgh many times....:-)
Thanks so much for the support Graham! I have a bike up at my dad's, I really need to get it down here for some local adventures!
Amazing mill pond like sea conditions around Cramond Island for winter and clear water as the blue paddles went in.
Always wondered why Inchmickery looked like a battleship... now I know !!
Great video, Cheers 👍
Cheers Richard, we waited a while scouring the forecasts to get those conditions, it was great to be out there!
I enjoyed my day out with you and Alicia haha, I'd be to scared but really enjoyed this video but my god you take some chances I had visions of it deflating lol,Bet yous couldn't wait to get home, changed dry and warm. Keep them coming till next one, take care and thanks for this. Xx
Haha thanks Margaret 😆 it was the best feeling in the world to get home to a warm flat and eat some soup!
I want to do this!! Looks like fun.
It really was! But maybe in summer next time :D
Wow loved it. Have been to that beach in April 19. We haven't walked to the Isle course of no knowledge about the tide. Awesome video. Thank you for sharing. You made me nervous with your air loosing kayak 😂🛶
Haha cheers for watching!
Fabulous video Steve, great to see the island close up. Well done the pair of you 😁 x
Aww thanks Claire! Hope you're doing well :)
Hi, yes I’m doing fine, I’ve just got over the Coronavirus! I’m now back at work thank goodness. Thank you for asking 😀
Fantastic video guys, don't get many days like that on the Forth. Loved your intrepid adventures, You were right about the Shipping lane, stay well clear, as the wake can easily capsize your kayak. as a boat owner on the Forth, I might bump into you on your next adventure. Dave.
Cheers Dave! We'd be quite happy to get a lift from you :) As a kid, we had a wee boat at Dalgety Bay Sailing Club, many an adventure on that awesome river!
Nice video! As experienced kayaker I saw many disasters waiting for you. So I am happy for you to came back safe. You read tides well, so it was good. Little more windy and you would end up somewhere else. 😉. Stay safe. Well done you 2!
Thanks very much! :) Yes, we wouldn't dared have gone out if there was a breath more wind :D
Another great wee trip....enjoyed it....I was feeling cold for you guys! At the end, I had to laugh when she said "I'm great" - just can't feel any of her extremities or walk other than that perfect! My knees wouldn't get me into a kayak or out right now, so not gonna try it! Cheers Buddy....have a good week.
You too Bob! My knees were feeling it a bit after as well, and that was only 2 hours on the water :)
An adventure and a half for both of you. Admire your spirit for taking it on and making it so interesting to view. I felt I was there with you in the kayak but l prefer my boats a bit larger and steadier in the water. I am a big Jessie who also can't swim. Thanks for the vid.
Haha I’d have to agree, would love a bigger boat as well, if only we could afford it 😆 cheers for coming along!
That is a fantastic video. I got a real sense of being there. I felt the cold..haha. Next time I'm flying North of Edinburgh on my way to Sumburgh I will be looking out for those Islands. Hope you both had a really hot bowl of soup afterwards.
Oh that soup was incredible! I'd like to join you on one of those flights!!!
Good video
Thanks Caroline :)
That looked great fun. Loved seeing the wildlife and reflections. Hot milky chocolate is good for warming up, BTW. You'd better get some clothing though appropriate for such escapades!
Ohhh good tip! And yes, even a cheap pair of wetsuit boots would have made all the difference :)
Great video looked really cold
Oh it was so good to be back in the warmth eating soup! Cheers Jim!
This is blinking awesome. Just watched your Elie chain walk too. Subbed good Sir.
Welcome aboard! Cheers :)

That’s a great point! Thanks so much! 😊
@@steve-marsh Take care and stay Happy... :-))))
Great video, I was worried that you were both going to get stranded on the Island!
That wouldn't have surprised me :D
Blimey 😁. Glad you made it back safely. 👍
Hehe it was so good to be back home again in the warmth! Maybe soon we'll be living in a motorhome though so we'll need a good diesel heater!
@@steve-marsh loads more videos to come if you go down that route then. All the best 👍
That was superb Steve. Your good lady is a star given she did most of the work!
Haha ain’t that the truth Davey :)
@@steve-marsh if that was in February, Barney the humpback whale was chomping his was around the Forth around then. It's a shame you didn't see him. There's a beautiful Sei whale in the Forth at the moment. Sei whales are the third largest on the planet and usually prefer deeper water so hope he\she is ok.
that water was so calm
Unbelievable! It was all just green screen filmed in a swimming pool :)
Well done folks, must say you are braver than me especialy in those conditions, but did enjoy the vid just glad it wasnt me.
Most enjoyed.
regards
Scott
Thanks so much Scott, it was good to be back home eating soup with the heating on after!
God you guys were brave and also lucky in having the sea so calm, on a wild day that inflatable kayak could have created some problems! My wife and I used to work a double Kayak up at Loch Rannoch, but she cant do that now! We still travel up to Rannoch ever 3 week in May, have done for over 30 odd years (time share) Kayak/s fishing boats cycles can all be hired to have great fun at Rannoch. You can hire a pod to stay in which sleeps 4, self catering! Fabulous café in the village which sells fabulous soup/scones etc! Well done you lucky guys!
My favourite is Skye, so much to take it and it has so much history. There is more to Skye than the fairy pools! I watched Landwards tonight as they took a boat out 100 miles out to sea, to the islands where the islanders left due to some sort of plague! St Kilda and the adjoining islands - stone houses, wild sheep high cliff tops - awesome viewing! If you like islands Steve - then this would be top of your list going there!
Awesome video. It's official, I think she may be more of daredevil than you! I would have been freaking out going under that dock for fear of puncturing the kayak! I love these adventures you are finding so close to your home.
You are so right! I need to keep her in check :D Thanks so much for coming along on these wee adventures!
@@steve-marsh Nice to see that She Who Must Be Obeyed is running the show. (Hint - Rumpole of the Bailey series on TV in the 1980's.) Great adventure, just bring gloves and a flask of your favorite malt whiskey to take care of the cold. Very sinister looking place. Definitely not a place to camp overnight.
Another interesting video,i lived near cramond as a child and always wondered what inchmickery looked like up close,I'm surprised you both kayaked out that far!
Cheers Iain!
Stones throw away from where i live, always wondered what it looked like up close! 🙂
Glad to give you a peek 👀
The view changes completely from a boat etc, we are normally looking out at the sea but some difference being on the sea looking around.
Got a pal who lives down at the borders ''right on the edge of River Nith'' he bought a 2 man boat a few years back but sadly we have yet to get out in her, every time I visit I see more and more green moss on her so now requires a very good clean, such a shame as we had some good plans, hopefully one day we'll get out.
Thanks again Steve
Totally agree! It’s a nice change to get that different perspective and it was a fun day out, but boy was it good to get home again and get a heat!
@@steve-marsh The coldest I've ever been was on one of the hottest days of 2007
Was on Prestwick beach and decided to swim out to a buoy I could see in the distance.
Always been a good swimmer but what a big mistake, the water was freezing but when I reached the buoy and turned around I knew I was in BIG trouble, the cold was really getting to me and I was now against the current, I managed back to the beach by my pal and his girlfriends mum were just about to call for help.
We packed up and drove to Asda in Ayr for BBQ food and all I kept hearing from 3 people with me was ..............LOOK you need to go to hospital lol
I only stopped shivering about 2hr's after the BBQ finished.
Was a good lesson I guess.
wow, wonderful tour, like and joined your network
