Tom Knight, John Dunn and JSM told us to go to Orkney, so we did! Viewers' Choice Episode One :)

  • We had a few days off together and put out the question on the RUclips Community page for ideas of where to go and boy did some incredible suggestions come back! I get the feeling we'll be working through that list forever, but here is episode one :) Many thanks to Tom, John and JSM for the inspiration.
Alicja has never been to Orkney before and I've only been there briefly. We made our choice at the last minute and to be honest more than anything we were following the weather - typically for when you put in for time off work the dark clouds appear, but we did alright!
Please bear in mind, this video was filmed during our holiday, so we weren't really focussed too much on a narrative, so it's more just clips of our time there, but of course I hope you still enjoy what I've been able to pull together in the edit. If nothing else it'll give you an impression of this wonderful group of islands off the northern tip of the mainland.
We travelled by ferry via Northlink's Scrabster - Stromness route. This was the cheapest option for going with the van (which is also our accommodation), but did involve a longggg drive to get to the top of the mainland first! There is a ferry from Aberdeen too, but we couldn't afford it. This ferry journey was around £200 return including van, so that was our only big expense to make the trip.
Music features a little more on this video that I would like, but unfortunately that was down to the fierce wind blowing almost constantly over the islands!
    Enjoy the video.
Hi, I’m Steve. I am a travel reviewer and post my trip reports here on RUclips. I pay for my own travel and produce my own videos. If you have any questions about my journeys or travel advice in general, please drop me a comment - I do read every single one. I’d also love to hear any recommendations you may have for future content, or why not challenge me to try something a little out of the ordinary! If you are looking to collaborate on any type of project, I’d love to hear from you - email me your ideas and hopefully we can work together in the future.

Hi folks, this is a bit of a different format today. Windy weather and the fact it was more holiday than filming trip left me little to work with editing the video, but this is what I managed to pull together from my dodgy clips, I really hope you still enjoy it! You deserved a video of some sort this week so this is it :D

Postcards being dropped in the post at 17:42, very much a dying art form and I love sending and getting them from friends while they are traveling. It let's me know they thought enough to actually write a note while they are away and purchased a stamp to send me something. It is so much more personal than a text! A very classy act you two. Send me one in the Colonies next! ;-)

Fabulous video! I don't know why have missed this until now. It's many years since I was in Orkney. My wife and I (and our then one toddler) flew down from Shetland one time for a weekend. The weather turned bad, so the only way back was on the cargo ferry (pre roll-on-roll off). They could take 12 passengers -- and our son was the 13th! We had a small cabin on this small, unstabilised boat and rolled all night from Kirkwall to Lerwick. The motion was especially bad as we crossed the Sumburgh Roost, the tide race at the south end of Shetland. Orkney and Shetland have many similarities, but also significant differences. By the way, I love the Italian chapel - and amazing work of art by the Italian prisoners of war.

We stayed on South Ronaldsy as our friend lives there, in fact I spotted her house as you were on the beach searching for pottery sherds......Great memories.....You are so right about the amazing roads and honesty boxes......It's another world.

The accent from the guy who made that announcement at the end sounded like a Welshman who has lived in Scotland for a while.
There are two distilleries on the Orkneys. The famous (some would say infamous) Highland Park where 80% of the price of the whisky goes on fancy marketing and packaging. Then there is the little, almost unheard of distillery, Scapa, which is terribly neglected by its parent company. Scapa, a distillery capable of producing the most wonderful spirit at 14 or 16 years old, is reduced to selling underaged whisky on the cheap by an owner who couldn't care less about this grand old distillery.
You have wet my appetite. I'd really like to visit Orkney now.

(We had to get off of Orkney or else miss our flight back to the USA.) You showed some locations we wanted to visit but didn’t have time for. I would recommend the Yesnaby cliffs just south of Skara Brae. Very scenic with water crashing against the cliffs. One Orkney resident we talked with mentioned the very low crime rate on the islands, so I wasn’t too surprised to see the honesty box with the card machine. Again, great video!

I watch a lot of documentaries about ancient places and for some reason one of the shots looking down the street, at about 17:03 reminds me so much of the way the buildings of Akrotiri, Santorini would have looked (it's in ruins now) when it was a village still in use. Both are little towns on islands, but in very different parts of the world! I've heard archaeologists ponder why the windows were so low, and wondering if the streets had been built up higher at some time. I think they should look at other places like this that show it's a particular style of building. Maybe the people of Orkney know why they're built that way!

I love Orkney. The Stromness Ferry my favourite way of going. Last time my sister and I rented a house at Stenness right in the middle of the strenness brodgar and mase howe triangle. Shopping week, the gala week is a great time to visit

Been rewatching some of the older videos as I recover from oral surgery. I now have Orkney on my bucket list (returning to see cousins in Ayr and Ardrossan first). Earlier this year, through Ancestors DNA I found that the Stewart side of my family are direct descendants of James V (the bastard side lol). My 10th Great Grandfather was Sir James Graemsay Stewart of Orkney, his father James Stewart (Mary Queen of Scots half brother) and grandfather James V. I wish my Dad had lived to know all this through DNA but yes historically I find it fascinating. thanks for listening. More heritage to uncover!

We spent the summer in Orkney in the late 70s when i was about 6. Back then we could run around inside Skara Brae; I'm sure you wouldn't be able to now!
Also, I don't know if you remember Billy Connolly's World Tour of Scotland, but I can't see the Ring of Brodgar now without picturing him dancing round it naked! 🙈😂

Wonderful and evoked so many memories for me. I have been to Orkney four times and explored everywhere from South Ronaldsay and Hoy to Rousay, Sanday, Eday, Westray and Papay. And, I have made it to North Ronaldsay too. I still have much to cover.
If you liked Skara Brae and the isle of Birsay go to Rousay where there are two sites to visit, Westray for Noltland Castle and the lighthouse headland walk, and for ultimate tranquility, Knap of Howar on Papay for the ancient remains and isolated beauty.
I do love Stromness and have camped many nights at the campsite visible from your footage as the ferry is approaching Stromness. My absolute favourite places in Orkney though have to be Rackwick Bay, Hoy and Pierowall, Westray.
Your video has inspired me to return next uear (2024).

SteveMarsh - I'm recommending Kirkcudbright. There's a tidal access, small island off the seashore track at St. Mary's Isle outside of the town. (Google earth) You'll be the only ones there🏕👍....... maybe not now I've called it. 🤔😜. Galloway, Stranraer, Luce Bay etc.... it's all good ⛺️😍

Steve 😊 So glad I came across this video. I have never been to the Orkney Islands, they look stunning! (maybe one day, I'll find my way there) but I think I mentioned not long ago that I had been to the Shetland Islands. A highlight of that trip (in 2018) was a trip down to Sumburgh, from the port town of Lerwick. At Sumburgh I enjoyed a pleasant stroll to the lighthouse, at the southern tip of the Shetlands, where there was also a lovely little cafe looking out to sea, and I had a very nice scone and coffee.

Hi Alicja and Steve Another fantastic video. Weather looked really good. I think what possibly puts people off going there is the forecasts on the BBC always show low temperatures and a lack of sun but your vlog showed complete opposite. One of the best Steve, even more so than the wee island off Oban. All the best Crawford
