I love that your mom dresses very stylishly, with jewelry and matched outfits, even though she’s only with family and there’s no one else around. Sorry that your dad is in decline - how heartbreaking.

My wife and I are really enjoying this RUclips series. A few weeks before Christmas we were watching and I got the idea to order two knitting kits for my wife. They arrived and made for wonderful Christmas gifts for her. So she gets to knit that beautiful wool from those seaweed eating sheep and we share in a little bit of the magic of Auskerry.
Yes I can imagine it was very tough in that time period - but then again it was probably a lot better than living in smog and filth in London in that era... It's very cool you've traced your ancestors back that far! Thanks for watching
Being from Iceland this way of living used to be quite normal there. Although you’d have hot springs in Iceland to heat your home and water. Bravo for turning out so normal.
Thank you for allowing us this window into your parent's lives. So grateful that they are willing to sacrifice their hard won privacy to allow this. It's fascinating to watch them navigate and create a successful, thriving life on a remote island with all the inherent challenges. They are just incredible human beings!
Thank you so much Angela! It's a good point about the privacy. They've always prized that out on the island but there comes a time where being open about the struggles - particularly with dementia - can actually help. Thanks for watching and subscribing 👍
Can't believe you have butterflies and bees there. But then, there are more flowers then I would expect and the vegetable garden looks amazing! Astonishing , what your parents have created.
Thank you! Yes it’s amazing how vibrant the ecosystem still is here. We have lots a lot of bird life since I was a child though - some things are going further afield to fish etc and it’s made the cliffs quieter from fewer seabirds but it’s still a thriving natural place! Thanks for watching
Just found the videos. A sublime place to be. I expect the living requires much hard work and skill but a lovely way to be sharing a life. Thank you for allowing the insight to this. Phil - Suffolk.
Ah thanks Phil! This is very kind. It is hard work 7 days a week - like any farm really - but it’s very rewarding. When you love the work, then it’s easier to keep at it 👍
The best to your parents. They've had a really different kind of life there; you and your brothers too. Glad you are there to help them out. Your company is most important too.
Wonderful and the most beautifully constructed videos. We are farmers in Somerset and watch these deeply poignant videos and know how frustrating it is seeing your dad change. My father in law has a similar condition and fully under stand the heart ache it brings. I think as farmers or ‘guardians of the land’makes life choices a lot more difficult. I never comment on any content on line but this has really got me. Thank you.
Ah James this is very kind and I really appreciate it. I’m sorry to hear about your father in law - it really is the most awful thing to witness in someone you love. Everyone asks what our plans are for the future as though it’s simple - and as you know, it never is! Sending you and your family all the best👍
For once the RUclips algorithm pointed me to something wonderful. I've now watched all of the videos since you begun your hiatus and checked out your parents' web site. What a great documentary of the life of your family. Thank you for telling your family's story and best wishes to your parents. Subscribed!
Ah thanks so much, this means a lot! I'm so glad people have found my videos because hearing people's perspectives on our life has been so heartening and interesting. Take care and thanks for the sub!
A wonderful video and it's very pleasing to see your Dad being supported in his need. Congratulations to your Mum as well and all the very best for 2024.

I was born and grew up in Thurso, often visited Orkney, so I can really appreciate the desire to live like your parents do. You must have had a fantastic childhood. The daily struggles are easily surpassed by the sheer beauty and tranquility of the surroundings
Ah lovely! I’ve never spent much time in Thurso apart from passing through for the ferry! It was a unique childhood that had its difficulties for sure - and I appreciate the place so much more now as an adult. Thanks for watching - take care
We love your channel in large part because we live in the California Sierra north of Yosemite National Park where a LOT of people live off grid. Making us kindred spirits.

Hello, I love your family"s story so much. I grew up in the Sonorn desert, (SW USA). While that filled me with wonder for the natural world it has been my 35 years in Maine, in the same house, starting my garden from nothing and having the life style that where we live in Maine offers. My trips to visit friends 1 hour away on the coast often meant taking the truck and pitchfork in case a storm had filled the cove beaches with sea weed. I sent a picture of my peat ginger bread houses. Put it in a link in the video of cutting peat. I put the last one that was still in the house out on the deck for the animals. I watched as a squirral wrestled with it. He/she managed to knock it over the edge, to the ground and the last time I looked there was no sign of it. The small junco birds are feeling a bit left out as I saw them come to the deck and look around for the peat houses. Well, thanks so much. What a pleasure., Kris
I have always hoped to travel to Scotland and Ireland, but as my health declines and I get old I know i will never be ale to do that now. So seeing your bit of Scotland and your family farm and hope is very touching. Thank you so much for sharing.
I have not even finished this video yet..... 6 minutes in....& already I can totally empathize with your mom. I have struggled with very similar things. We use 30lb propane tanks hooked to our cooking stove in order to not have a service 'bill' & I can't tell you how frustrating it is if my husband is not home & I can't get the stupid wrench to get it open! Tools often are not made for women's hand size & my husband seems to have super human strength. When he closes something it is done with maximum force & I am left weakly struggling to open what ever he touched. I have struggled with hauling tons of 50lb bags of coal that we heat our home with when he was laid up after a surgery. The hopper is over chest high for me! I try very hard to maintain my composure, but I am sure that if I had close neighbors they would turn pale at the blue streak I cuss up. The struggle is more mental than physical because mentally you feel like a failure or that you somehow can not figure out the most basic of tasks. I am sometimes reduced to tears. & I used to be a very physically strong person, but doing the repetitious work necessary to run our small farming operation left me with a spine surgery. I also struggle with operating things like our tractor. I know HOW to drive it but I so rarely need to do so that I forget how to get it started & I lack basic safety knowledge that my husband just naturally has from years of operating heavy equipment. there is always a fear there, that I will get hurt or damage something that we cannot afford to repair. It is really hard to be brave through these things & to persevere. It is also very hard for the one who "should Know how" to do something to not be able to help.
You are a remarkable person. Hauling 50lbs is no joke and opening values when another closes it takes all your strength. Keep your head high as I tip my hat to you and your commitment. Kudos to our kindred spirits 🙏🏻
@@liambyrne591 for moving a WHOLE TON of coal??? I guess that would work for the filling of the hopper, but I have to just suck it up and move the 50 lb bags when we are moving our bagged coal from our storage to the basement. And anywho, the way the bags are filled I would probably still need to somewhat lift the bag to fill a bucket. What I really should have done is had a SON, instead of 2 daughters 🤣 maybe its not too late lol
I look forward to every new video you post. Your Mom's garden looked amazing! It just goes to show that many times the solutions we are forced, out of necessity, to find in nature, provide the best results. I pay a lot of money for little jugs of liquid seaweed to enhance the microbiology in my garden soil, and to make the heirloom organic vegetables I grow, healthier, tastier, and more nutritious. Out of necessity, your Mom had to use what she had available to enhance her poor rocky soil, and that was seaweed. And as usual, what God provided in nature, is the best soil enhancer and garden fertilizer on the planet. And just by seeing how lush and green your Mom's garden is, you know the veggies are healthy and tasty. The more I see of the day to day chores that go into living on the island, the more I am amazed at all the necessities of life that God managed to put into that beautiful little windswept island. Yet, it still requires a lot of human effort and hard work on the part of your parents to harvest those resources. And It reminds me of how much most of us take those resources for granted, even though they are necessary for life.
Stumbled across this, clicked "play" and what seemed like a few seconds later, it was over. A great story being well told. Interesting people, high quality footage plus very professional commentary and editing. I will now binge watch all other episodes. Thank you.

I love these videos and it reminds me of a time as a kid growing up in outport Newfoundland in the 1970’s. We would bring water from a well when the weather turned cold and froze the lines. We grew carrots, potatoes, and cabbage. Cut firewood and sometimes was pulled to our home with horse and sleigh.
What lovely mum and dad such a beutiful way of life i am not saying it is easy but what a great way to bring your kids up they may want to go to a city when they grow up but will rember how they grew up.
Thank you so much for another wonderful episode of life with your family on Auskerry. Many memories told and held, a fantastic vegetable garden, broccoli, beans and beetroots, beautiful butterflies bathing. Authentic and rich!
Over 112,000 views already, well done. Being aware of how your fathers illness progresses it will probably be an archive of your parents last year on their lsland unless one of your family has decided to abandon their lives and become full time live in carers, I have seen people do this and truthfully it really only prolongs the process without a major improvement in the suffers quality of life but it does help their partner come to terms with the inevitable without the loneliness and sole responsibility of being the primary carer . However your mother appears to be a very pragmatic lady who probably has a plan in mind for a long time now. Your island like our hill looks idyllic in the sun shine how ever we both know that when the rain is horizontal and crunchy it is not the most hospitable place to be and a small mistake can be fatal. Regards from Ireland.
Hi Andy, this comment really touched me because of how clear your understanding of what we’re facing is. It’s very tough and painful, as you know. You’re right my mum has thought it all through a thousand times, but then dementia has a unique path in everyone and planning over the last year has been nearly impossible. I’m so glad we opened up our our family’s struggle with dementia for comments like yours alone - it makes us all feel like we’re not facing this without support. Take care and thanks for watching 👍
Also I love the Irish realism of your last sentence! 😂 most of my filming was on the good days because I didn’t want to get my camera wet, and on the windy days it doesn’t matter how hunkered down you are, you just can’t get a steady shot. On those days you don’t think of the place as idyllic, I completely agree. 👍
Hi there Hamish! - Starting the new year watching one of the definitely best channels on RUclips isn't wrong!⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐😉👍 Wishing you and your entire family the very, very best for 2024! 🙏
Hi, I just found your channel and watched this for the first time. I'm so sorry to see your dad with dementia, I lost my dad to vascular dementia. It took 3 years for him to die. Very interesting way of life. Most people think I am mad for living off the grid in the uk, living on an island out there is a hole different ball game.
Ah thank you, and I’m sorry to hear about your dad too. It’s all very painful as you know - but there’s nothing else for it but to carry on as best you can! Thanks for your support 👍
What a gorgeous and special garden. That is kind of like my dream garden, and beets and poppies are familiar to me too. Wish I had an un-ending supply of God's breadseed-flowers right now🌷, as it would probably mean I could live "normally" and not have to be fasting right now. I tend to think that my problems at this point, flourish mainly due to suppressed garden-access, but perhaps my existential dilemma is far deeper, and even my own fault in ways I don't understand. Cherish you garden always 💚💖💙🙏 may you and your garden be blessed and protected forever 🙌
Aw thank you, my mum will be pleased to see people enjoy her garden and all the effort that’s gone into it. I hope you’re taking care - thanks for watching ☺️
@@hamishauskerry Thanks bud ☺💙 her garden looks really special! If you guys can get compressed blocks of "coconut coir" over there, I highly recommend it for mixing with composts/soils to greatly improve structure, porosity, drainage, and ultimately microbial life in general. That, and whatever foliage you guys have already being generated (from any weeds or even pruned off of trees and shrubs) can totally go into generating compost or even used to "mulch" directly around the base of other plants and also contribute to the soil volume and fertility. She probably knows it already, but I was thinking about this as its totally possible to increase the soil depth and fertility going forward, leading to a bigger and bigger garden, providing more and more food. That garden is already such an impressive oasis on a relatively "sparse" (but beautiful of course) landscape, but can definitely be expanded, even without importing any compost, and just generating it from what plants are growing/producing. Take care brother! May 2024 and beyond, be characterized by breakthroughs of our greatest needs and yearnings, and truly good things that last forever.
I really enjoyed the gardening sequence! I would love to see extra garden content over the year. Raised-beds with Sheep droppings, sea-weed, some grass cuttings and the thistle plants (before they made seeds) would be an idea I guess for a filling. Greetings from Germany
Thank you! I will try to film some more stuff this year about the plants of the island for sure. And this sounds like a good idea for a bed! Thanks so so much for watching
@@hamishauskerry Thanks so much for answering! The raised-bed filling was just some suggestions no offense. I know how hard it is to build a good soil and get some humus finally working. So really a little paradise your mum was building and growing there. Keep up the good work! Love from Germany

Thanks Tyler! It’s beneficial for me and my parents to work together in this beautiful place. Thanks for your support :)
So glad to see a new post! Stay healthy and keep us updated! Love the garden.
It’s mum’s pride and joy! And we had a beautiful day to show it off. Thanks for watching!
I look forward to each video.Wish there were more.
Thank you for watching! There are still more to come…
Thank you for another slice of life from an amazing place!
Thank you! It really is a magical place - I’m so glad I’ve had the chance to share it.
Such a lovly channel, Hamish! Thanks for sharing :)
That’s very kind, thank you for watching!
A wonderful video and it's very pleasing to see your Dad being supported in his need. Congratulations to your Mum as well and all the very best for 2024.
Thank you so much Alan. We all just want to ensure mum and dad live as long and happy as possible despite all the challenges. Do subscribe if you'd like to see more 👍
I was born and grew up in Thurso, often visited Orkney, so I can really appreciate the desire to live like your parents do.
@@hamishauskerry Yes, that really is a life one couldn't have today
We love your channel in large part because we live in the California Sierra north of Yosemite National Park where a LOT of people live off grid. Making us kindred spirits.
Ah thanks so much Beth! That’s really kind. A lot of people live off grid round here too - it’s incredible to see how everyone makes it work. All the best to you in California - I bet it’s beautiful there!
Ah thanks Kris, this is lovely to read. I'd love to visit the Sonorn - I bet it's stunning! Take care
I have always hoped to travel to Scotland and Ireland, but as my health declines and I get old I know i will never be ale to do that now. So seeing your bit of Scotland and your family farm and hope is very touching. Thank you so much for sharing.
Ah I'm sorry to hear that - but isn't RUclips a wonderful resource for exploring the world virtually. Wishing you good health in 2024 👍
I have not even finished this video yet.....
It IS so hard not to be able to do something that we want or need to do! Sometimes just a little cussing and a few tears makes it all better.
You are a remarkable person. Hauling 50lbs is no joke and opening values when another closes it takes all your strength. Keep your head high as I tip my hat to you and your commitment. Kudos to our kindred spirits 🙏🏻
Quite right! You sound amazing Patty - thanks so much for your kind and thoughtful comment. Take care of yourself ❤️
What you need to do is not haul the heavy bag but put it in small buckets
This is really kind, thank you! Take care ❤️
What a hard life it seems to be, yet your parents don't care to leave, and you children have fond memories of it. I admire your parents very much.
Thank you Sarah! My parents really are amazing. Take care
Wow! Our off grid, (non remote) life seems super easy after seeing this - thats serious resilience 💚
Any life off grid requires a lot of problem solving and ingenuity - so respect to you for doing it too! Thanks for watching ☺️

Thank you! I really wanted to just show a bit of everyday life, because that's what I miss most when I'm not there. Take care
Stumbled across this, clicked "play" and what seemed like a few seconds later, it was over. A great story being well told. Interesting people, high quality footage plus very professional commentary and editing. I will now binge watch all other episodes. Thank you.
This is really kind Martin! Thanks very much for watching and this really nice comment. I’m learning lots and trying to improve my filmmaking, but I’m really proud of the series so far and the memories are special to keep. Take care 👍

Isn’t it sad that all things must end at some point? But what fantastic things memories are! Your videos will keep them alive, and hopefully teach another generation how life was “ in the old days”. It was hard work and beauty, that’s what it was.

Cheers from Newfoundland, Canada. My grandparents lived on islands like this this. Heart warming. Definitely a way of life that needs youth support for sure.
We just rebuilt my grandparents stage and built onto the cabin last few years on the island.

What a lovely way to live one’s life. I know some would be aghast at the thought but as a 70 year old I can truly say I wish I had your opportunity. Of course your parents were perfect for this life. I vicariously share the dread they must be feeling as they approach a time when they must leave their island. At least they have magnificent memories.❤
That’s really kind, thank you very much for your kind comment. Yes that sense of dread I know isn’t unique to them, but it is hard to see. As a young man, I too feel really sad at the reality of the end as we know it approaching. It’s hard - but we have great memories and we’re very lucky in so many ways. Take care

I'm in total awe of your parents for creating such a unique life.

- Starting the new year watching one of the definitely best channels on RUclips isn't wrong!⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐😉👍
Wishing you and your entire family the very, very best for 2024! 🙏
This really is kind - thank you so much. Happy new year to you!
A beautiful country.🕊🇺🇲💕
Scotland is magnificent ❤️🏴
