I was pleased to hear your dad returned safely to Auskerry. Air ambulances are a godsend. Your parents are amazing people, this lifestyle sounds idyllic, but hard work and is not for everyone. I wish you all well.
Ah thanks so much Hilary! Yeah it’s certainly hard work but on the whole we love it. Health challenges certainly increase the stress levels! Thanks for your support ☺️
So glad Dad is OK. I think you will make a great keeper of the island. You have all the skills and with the help from Mom and friends you can make videos of your island adventures that I will watch as long as you make them. I hope the channel takes off. Thank you for another episode on the island and your family🙏 you have all become so real and dear to me. I am truly grateful that your parents were not gone long although what an experience to be there alone for the first time! You do such an amazing job of showing the beauty and the reality there💕
That’s so kind, thank you! It’s hard to show both the beauty and the harsh realities at times - but that’s what I really wanted to do. Too often life in remote places is portrayed as a walk in the park, and I’ve seen in my parents life of hard graft that it ain’t! Thanks so much for your support :)
Such beauty but also desolation when you’re alone out there. I know with my mum, any mild infection or injury can really set her back with her dementia. I hope your dad and your mum have recovered from that situation.

Ah thank you Susan! I do love being out on the water on a day like that. There’s nothing quite like it. Thanks for watching - I hope you get back to Orkney one day!

My heart sank at the news at the start of the episode, proper sank. With my hands clasped just listening to you and already praying. Thankfully it did not take long for the return of your folks. Thanks and blessings to all involved in helping your dad. Hamish you and your folks and your friends, could not be a more lovable bunch of people that hit the heart and mind of this old fella. Thank you for keeping us involved in your life and family. I tell everyone I know to come and watch and learn something more about the country and the people i love. All the best mate, thinking about you all.
A two minute warning to sort out all the necessary items! Health problems can get suddenly serious. Glad that the service was so close by, serendipity strikes again 😊. Being alone must have been amazing.
I am so glad your dad is ok. I can imagine the strong emotions of being alone as feel that way living in a town and long for being just nature to worry about. Your parents are amazing and I am so glad you are sharing them with the world even as you gave your dad time to see his island on a good family, flat sea day
Thank you mother Earth you were home on the Island when Mum and😢 Dad needed to leave...God speed to Dads health and your beautiful Island. I thought my Island was small lol. Watching and supporting from Vancouver Island BC 🇨🇦
Thank you. What a story you have to tell. I am with your Dad I would have had those down as Orca with that massive upright fin, you learn something every day! My husband and I have lived on a small sailing boat for the last 25 years and empathize with many of the issues you and the family are facing. As we age, almost dotage now, it's impossible to imagine not living like this until the end of our days. So far so good-we'll have to see what challenges come next. Your mother is an Amazon!
The entire video & your narration combined to make such a well made episode of the raw beauty, hardships, & unique wonders of this remote island & your incredibly brave, hardworking parents, who literally built an incredible life for themselves & their children! Your parents are extremely talented & tenacious people; they leave speechless & in awe, with nothing less than total admiration for them!! Can’t thank you enough for sharing this video!! Your future generations will also benefit from these outstanding family records!!
I love your content, style, and narrations. This reminds me a lot of a place I spent many summers growing up, Nova Scotia on Canada's east coast. It's no wonder (Nova Scotia = New Scotland) but the weather, the kind of people and tight knit community, cottage industries, and many of the challenges are similar. Aging populations and access to care are critical issues there, and this is a well rendered reminder that with the beauty of isolation, coastal communities, and open lands come serious challenges for delivering care. Thanks for your continuing work, very special stuff.
Ah how I long to explore Nova Scotia! It looks so beautiful - I’d love to make a video about people’s remote living there one day. Thanks so much for your support for my videos - it really means a lot ☺️
Your parents' home, your family home is a beautiful and special place capable of providing hardship in equal measure with the beauty. One can only watch and hope that your parents go through their final years in peace and comfort. When and how will the story end? The wisest of us knows not. Your parents are my peer generation and I keep them in my thoughts.
I dont know how your videos appeared in my recommended, but I'm glad they did. I hope your and your parents' hard work can continue as long as possible. I, for one, would love to spend the weekend on the island! Best of luck with everything going forward! Keep the video updates coming!
Thank you Hamish for making these videos I have really really enjoyed them all! What a beautiful legacy your parents are leaving. Hats off to them. I have always had a dream of living off grid and off the land but watching these videos reminds me of the hard work, devotion and commitment involved. We grow our own veggies, make our own medicines etc but even that can be a lot sometimes. I feel going forward what is sustainable for me is a balance with these things so we can really have the time to rest and enjoy. I don't think a lot of people have any idea of the work involved with these kinds of lifestyles so thank you for bringing awareness to this. I really do hope someone comes forward to take over the family farm on the Island and continues on the legacy your parents have started. Very happy to hear the making of the videos created more time for you all to be out enjoying the land a reminder of the beauty of creativity! Looking forward to more! Wishing your Dad health and wellness. Much love. Elaine
Ah Elaine, this is very kind. It’s a tough and challenging life living in this place, and some of that is hard to convey because I was in the thick of the stressful discussions about weather, boats, ordering food supplies, or managing a large flock of sheep. But alongside all that, it’s an immensely fulfilling life and I’m so grateful to my parents for persisting. Thank you for your encouragement and understanding- I really do appreciate it. Take care 🙏
Thank you for your kind and heartfelt reply, Hamish. I will be silently watching & applauding your life journey for as long as I am able. I know already that you are going to be a happy, grateful & contented old man some day because you will not lose your desire to create and explore. Wishing you a safe journey and ever so many happy memories. May you be blessed and protected in all of your endeavors. 🙏CW
I will be in Orkney very soon, will try and source some of your Mum's products to take back to NZ. I know, coals to Newcastle and me a sheep farmer too with my own wool (coloured Finish Landrace). Such and awesome idea to record the lifestyle with your parents there, resilience is surely their strength and now your Mum takes up the batten. What a wonderful record of your family and life growing up that you will be able to share not just with the world but your own families. Better than snapshots, we hear their voices... just so lovely, just so lovely. Life is all about resilience and this is resilience in action. Thank you for sharing this, it is very special.
This is such a special message from you, thank you so much ☺️ please do take a look at mum’s wool when you’re in Orkney, it’s in quite a few shops or we have a website too. I know landraces are beautiful sheep so I’m glad you like ours too! Take care and have a brilliant trip to Orkney ☺️
Hi Hamish, what a heart warming sight that must have been to see you're parents returning to their beloved island and for them to watch the island getting closer from the boat,as you can see from the comments there's so much admiration for you're mum and dad's lifestyle choice ,lets hope and pray that it will continue for many years to come, cheers fae Pat ,👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Ah thanks as always Pat! It was a relief to see them and after dad had been unwell for a week or so, it was great to see him looking and feeling a lot better. Thanks for your support ☺️
amazing country... sorry to hear about your Dad, i hope this finds him much improved. i have yet to see an ocean so i find your filming very fascination.. and you have the perfect narrator voice.. rock on bud. take it all in, life as you know changes in the blink of an eye! ever onward my boy... good luck !
Wow that’s amazing to me! North America is a very big continent though I guess - it would be pretty impossible not to see an ocean in the UK 😀 thanks so much for your support - it means a lot mate
Beautiful and emotional videos. Just found your channel. We enjoyed visiting the Orkneys this past summer, including Kirkwall. Best wishes to you and your family!
Thanks very much Bill! I’m so glad you enjoyed your trip to Orkney - the mainland is stunning too plus lots of great food and history. Thanks for your support!
Thank you for sharing your beautiful parents and the amazing life they made for themselves. What a profound gift you all have in so many ways! As a person living an incredibly painful life at the moment your videos have brought me such peace. Thanks and God Bless all of you.
Your life on AuSkerry is so profoundly unique and special. It will fortify and reward you all your life, and in everything that you do. I live (as my family before me) in the forests of the Canadian Shield of Canada's Boreal forests. My nearest neighbour (and only neighbour) is a mile away, across the lake that lies at the base of the cliff upon which I built my house. From my front windows I can see for over 5 kms in an arc of 270 degrees, to the horizon, over the lake and the forest halls. At night my whole world is roofed by a tapestry of stars and galaxies. Like you, I have an old Massey tractor (before they became Massey Ferguson). She and I have spent our lives moving the world together. My family originally came from Argyll and Leven-Scoonie (which would be the balmy south to you- smile). Máel Coluim (Max)
So glad the air ambulance service is available. We have it in the states, but the cost is so outrageous that even after insurance makes its contribution for costs that it can easily cause bankruptcy.
🙏 ...and I am grateful for your time & effort in sharing this interesting and challenging experience with us all. Please tell your Mum & Dad that a lady named Pat says Hello from the Yukon, Canada.
Ah that’s so kind and thoughtful! I’ve seen some documentaries that show the Yukon and wow it’s stunningly beautiful! I would absolutely love to visit one day. Thanks for your support ☺️
Really appreciate your sharing this amazing lifestyle with us. Looking forward to the next one..very well edited I must say. All the best from east coast Canada
Ah this is much appreciated - thank you David! I really put effort into trying to tell the story as best I can with the stuff I’ve been able to film - and I’m learning all the time! All the best to you in beautiful Canada
Greetings, Hamish and family. I was so glad to have another of your videos in this series to savor and enjoy before just another few wee hours to sleep. You have such a natural talent for filming & narrating, Hamish and I enjoy your series immensely. I am a prolific amateur writer and photograher & realized many long years ago the value of recording my life's journey. When you mentioned about being alone, I knew how that aloneness felt in many of my travels. The most memorable was also the most desolate place devoid of air movement and not a single sound of man, insect or beast and was on a bluff in the far west Usa overlooking more desolate desert with not a drop of water for more miles than I could guess. It was the lack of sound that got to me more than the lack of water. I have lived near bodies of water nearly my entire life, from the Great Lakes to the mid-Atlantic & north-Atlantic coastline. I have enjoyed many years of travel and my beloved Scotland is where my heart has been my entire life. The many people I met & broke bread with in Stromness and Kirkwall will always be held close to my heart. Their open kindness, generosity laughter & lightheartedness embraced me in their warmth which I will not easily forget. My memories are still alive and well and so are my diaries and photographs in case my memories fade. I know what you have chosen to undertake in this series will be of immense comfort to you & loved ones further along your journey of life. Embrace your journey, wherever it takes you, with an open mind, heart, and soul. As the great American poet Robert Frost penned in 1915... "Two roads diverged in the wood and I - I chose the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference." Wishing you a safe and happy journey, with many beautiful memories. 🙏
This is very kind and thoughtful, thank you for taking the time to write this. I’m so glad you had a great experience in Orkney, it’s such a special place and because I’ve spent so much time only one one or two of the islands, there’s still so much for me to explore one day. I’m immensely glad I dreamt up the idea of buying a camera and filming whilst on the island the Christmas before last. I was planning to take a sabbatical to help and I suddenly put my day to day work as a reporter together with my passion for the island and thought this was my one chance to really secure some of the memories to keep forever. It’s the little things about life there, the beautiful day to day existence and the way it looks and feels - that’s what I wanted to capture. The RUclips videos have music on them to help tell the story and keep people interested but I still have the raw footage to keep - and one of the things I’ll watch them back for will be the sounds, including the natural silences. I wish I had stills photographic knowledge or skill but video is what I know a bit about and I’m so glad I’ve been able to use that on this project. Thanks so much for your kind encouragement- I hope you’re taking care. H
Just found your videos. I love your island. Reminds me of my small home town in Nova Scotia Canada. Mackerel jigging is THE BEST! I laughed so hard and screamed like a wild woman the first time I got to do it. So much fun. Cant wait to see more videos. All the best to you and your family.
Ah thanks so much Marina! That’s really kind and I’m so glad you’ve enjoyed the videos - that means a lot. Ah mackerel are just the best aren’t they?? They’re so powerful and when you have 2 or 3 on the line it feels like you’ve caught a shark (or at least it did as a kid!) 😄 Best wishes back to you and your family ☺️
Your parents have had a lovely life on this island. There are many people trying to obtain such a lovely, although hard life. Prayers for you and your family.
Yes it is hard - and often in ways that are hard to show in these documentaries. We enjoy the beauty and try to manage the challenges. Thanks for your encouragement!
I feel privileged to see into your family. Thank you for sharing this with us all. Your story is definitely one of wonder. The harsh but fascinating way of life on your island. You’re parents are such wonderful people strong resilient hard working people who care so deeply about their environment and each other. You’re mother is always so cheerful and positive. Ageing and the limitations it brings are not always easy to accept, equally the health issues we suffer as we grow older. You’re parents are absolutely marvellous. It’s lovely to see you and your family together and enjoying the lifestyle. Only you can make the life changing decision as to take over the farm or live with the wonderful memories you hold. Good luck with your future whatever it turns out to be.
Thank you so much for this kind comment. My parents are incredible and inspire me with all that they’ve achieved. These films are my tribute to them - I only wish I had started a few years earlier. But then again my dad hated any publicity or attention so he probably wouldn’t have liked me doing them back in the day! He loves watching them now as he’s no longer able to be on the island due to his health sadly. Your kindness with this reply really means a lot. Take care
What brilliant people your parents are Hamish …they learned what the land and nature taught them that had a choice but chose the real way .. all of life with its uncertainty… all lessons you have been able to witness first hand… yes to we onlookers it seems magical idyllic but reality has a serious bite …I thank you for being a soul that looks deeply into nature and its joys and pitfalls and for sharing the realities of being self sufficient in and world filled with so many luxuries… but they all pale in comparison to the life you have lived with your family … blessings wished for all daily…
This is such a deeply kind and thoughtful comment - I’m just so touched that you’ve written this! Thank you for your encouragement and support for what we’re trying to do. I hope you’re taking care! ☺️
Ah the kill switch is a lifesaver when used as it should be. Just love your Dad’s thoughtfulness and tidiness to put it somewhere safe till you next use the engine!! ❤
your island reminds me of sth west victoria ( Australia ) . Rugged and windswept by natures fury at times but spectacular too. All the best to you and your family
Lived alone on Isle Martin north of Ullapool for a bit, I miss it tbh. Dont miss having to get out of a warm bed to turn the genny (in exterior shed) on/off though, Great video. PS i dont blame Simon for thinking they are Orcas, those dorsal fins are pretty tall for a Risso ;)
Aha yeah it’s a wonderful life until the weather turns and you just want a takeaway and not to worry about running out of power 😂 thanks so much for watching as always
Greetings from NZ, I am a new subscriber, really enjoying your channel, Best wishes for your Dad! Are the sheep grown for their wool colour, they are so beautiful! You live in an amazing place!
Hi there! Thanks for your comment - I really appreciate the support. The sheep are chosen for their wool quality predominantly and also their colour, yes. The latest video in the series actually shows how we choose the rams each year and the basis for that choice. Thanks for watching and subscribing!
Best wishes for your parents. Thanks for sharing your videos. I just received my sheepskin rug from your mother! I’m really happy to have it for so many reason’s, including supporting their livelihood. Keep up the good work and I hope your family can find a way to continue this remarkable lifestyle.
Hello Hamish, As just sent a comment, I was suddenly thinking if you’ve considered making a Picture/Photo Book, that captures the beauty of this island, especially showcasing the Seasons, wildlife, plants, ocean, etc? Even a Calendar? Stationary? Etc? Of course you’re extremely busy, but you could partner up with a photographer & whoever else you need? You need an additional Revenue Stream that would help you & your family to continue living & thriving in this amazing life!!! Best of luck!! I look forward to more videos👍🤗🙌🙌!!

I would give anything to live there and have that life hope your father is well and getting the help he needs
Thanks so much for your support 👍
You’re not really alone there is just no other humans around
Quite right! Thanks for watching :)
This is just immensely kind, I’m so grateful to you for this lovely comment. Thanks so much for your support ☺️ take care
Best wishes to you're father and maybe if ever left alone again to try and do a live Q&A, keep up the good work boss
That’s a good idea! I might well do that if it happens again. Thanks for your support 👍
A two minute warning to sort out all the necessary items! Health problems can get suddenly serious. Glad that the service was so close by, serendipity strikes again 😊.
Being alone must have been amazing.
It was a crazy few hours! Thanks so much for your support Angela ☺️
I am so glad your dad is ok. I can imagine the strong emotions of being alone as feel that way living in a town and long for being just nature to worry about. Your parents are amazing and I am so glad you are sharing them with the world even as you gave your dad time to see his island on a good family, flat sea day
Thank you so much Cheryl! Yes it was a lovely day on the water, and the way it goes with dementia - you never know when you’ve had your last trip.
Thank you mother Earth you were home on the Island when Mum and😢 Dad needed to leave...God speed to Dads health and your beautiful Island. I thought my Island was small lol. Watching and supporting from Vancouver Island BC 🇨🇦
Ha! I’ve been to beautiful Vancouver Island and it didn’t feel small to me 😂 thanks so much for your kind support ☺️
Ah I really hope that you are able to keep living your dream for a long time yet! Thanks so much for your support and take care of one another!
This is such a beautiful and kind comment, thank you so much! I’m immensely proud and full of admiration for what my parents have achieved. Take care
Thank you so much for your kind and thoughtful comment. We don’t know what will happen but we’re all helping each other as best we can ☺️
I dont know how your videos appeared in my recommended, but I'm glad they did. I hope your and your parents' hard work can continue as long as possible. I, for one, would love to spend the weekend on the island! Best of luck with everything going forward! Keep the video updates coming!
Ah thanks so much! I hope you enjoy the other videos in the series. Thanks for your support 👍
Another fab mini doc! Congrats from PEI, Canada 🇨🇦
Thank you so much for your support and encouragement! 💪
My Prayers are with your Father, and your Family.
Thank you ☺️
Glad to see Dad is better. Keep the story going! Let Mom know I appreciated the email!
Ah thanks so much! I’ll let her know 👍
Thank you Hamish for making these videos I have really really enjoyed them all!
Take care 🙏
Spectacular scenery and well done videos. I would like to see more of your parents house. Many thanks
Hello! Thanks so much for watching. There will be a bit more from inside the house to come in this series :)
🙏CW
Thank you Charles - you’re a kind soul. I appreciate this a lot 🙏
Sending positive thoughts to you and your parents as they navigate health issues in such a remote location.
Thank you so much for your support ☺️
Wow what a fantastic place really love your videos thanks for sharing hope your dad is OK 👍 🇬🇧
Ah thanks Steve! That’s really kind 👍
Thank you for sharing ♥️
You are so welcome - thanks Debbie!
Love the old Massey :)
It’s a great ol machine! Thanks
I love this channel and the scenery is beautiful lucky you to have on the doorstep, hope your dad is comfortable and back soon
Ah thanks so much! We really are lucky for sure. Thanks for your support 👍
Definitely feel the timelessness of the caves, thanks again from old New Orleans 😎 !
Ah I’m glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching 👍
amazing country... sorry to hear about your Dad, i hope this finds him much improved. i have yet to see an ocean so i find your filming very fascination.. and you have the perfect narrator voice.. rock on bud. take it all in, life as you know changes in the blink of an eye! ever onward my boy...
Your parent are such a lovely couple who are living their dream's it's such a beautiful island they call home ❤❤
Thanks Harry!
Thank you for sharing your beautiful parents and the amazing life they made for themselves. What a profound gift you all have in so many ways! As a person living an incredibly painful life at the moment your videos have brought me such peace. Thanks and God Bless all of you.
Aw I’m sorry to hear that but I’m so glad you’ve enjoyed the videos. Sending my best wishes to you ❤️
Thank you for yet another great story. Hugs to all of you from Airdrie, Canada.
Thanks so much for your support, as always! Hope you’re taking care 👍
You came into my feed this evening and I was touched by your story telling. I will listen further. Subscribed.
Awesome! Thank you so much for your support 👍
Thank you for another great slice of life from your family.
Ah thanks so much Billy! Appreciate your support 👍
I am amazed at your channel and story! Blessings to you all. Watching from the rich agricultural midwest of the USA.
Awesome! Thank you Patty! I appreciate the support.
Thank you for filming you and your family's life on this island, it has had me transfixed!
Thank you so much! I hope the enjoy the other videos in the series ☺️
So glad the air ambulance service is available. We have it in the states, but the cost is so outrageous that even after insurance makes its contribution for costs that it can easily cause bankruptcy.
Ah I bet it’s cripplingly expensive where you are. We are incredibly fortunate to have them here when we need it. All the best to you
All the best from Canada 🇨🇦….. Really enjoying the series. 👍
Glad you enjoy it! Thanks for watching Phil 👍
What a lovely update you have given us, keep them coming, kindest regards to your family, from N.Z. 😂
Ah thank you Ernie! I really appreciate your good wishes - I hope you’re taking care 👍
great doco! thanks for putting it together Hamish.
Ah I really appreciate this! Thanks so much Denis 👍
I pray that it will be better for you and your parents. I have enjoyed your videos.
Aw thank you so much! ☺️
What an amazing location, I am sure its a difficult life there but its truly stunning
Cheers Tony! Yeah it’s certainly tricky often but it’s also a beautiful and fulfilling life so we’ve been very lucky. Thanks for watching!
Glad they're safely back home!
Thank you! 😀
"Two roads diverged in the wood and I - I chose the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference."
Wishing you a safe and happy journey, with many beautiful memories.
They’re so powerful and when you have 2 or 3 on the line it feels like you’ve caught a shark (or at least it did as a kid!) 😄
Best wishes back to you and your family ☺️
Your parents have had a lovely life on this island. There are many people trying to obtain such a lovely, although hard life. Prayers for you and your family.
Yes it is hard - and often in ways that are hard to show in these documentaries. We enjoy the beauty and try to manage the challenges. Thanks for your encouragement!
I am so happy to see that Dad is safe back home.
Thanks Colin 👍
Take care
Best of luck with everything on the island take care 👍👍👍
Thanks so much Michael!
Yeah we got flying doctor here in Aussie great group of people hope it all good
They’re incredible - and I bet you need them with the huge distances between places in Oz!
Yet another beautiful video !!
Thanks so much!! 😀
Glad your dad was back home safely and quickly and mum ❤️
Ah thank you so much ☺️ it was a big relief
😅 yes looking back on it perhaps I do too, but at the time… 😬😂
your island reminds me of sth west victoria ( Australia ) . Rugged and windswept by natures fury at times but spectacular too. All the best to you and your family
Ah that’s cool! I haven’t been there but I’d love to visit one day. Thanks so much for your support 👍
A very special place with special people. Take care. Prayers for you all. 🙏💕
Thanks so much Moira ☺️
I’m so thankful I found this channel. Pure Gold.
This is such a nice thing to say - thank you so much ☺️
Lived alone on Isle Martin north of Ullapool for a bit, I miss it tbh.
Yes those were tall dorsal fins. I’ve never seen an Orca other than on the telly tho
I’ve not watched any of your videos before it was brilliant I loved it, well done.
Glad your dad is back home, take care big hugs to you all xx
Ah I’m so glad you’ve found them now, Jan! Thanks so much for your support :) xx
This is a wonderful channel, you are very talented.
That’s such a kind thing to say, thank you!
So you had a whole Island to yourself as a kid.sounds awesome
With my brothers yes! Thanks for watching
Best wishes for your parents. Thanks for sharing your videos. I just received my sheepskin rug from your mother! I’m really happy to have it for so many reason’s, including supporting their livelihood. Keep up the good work and I hope your family can find a way to continue this remarkable lifestyle.
Ah brilliant! I’m so glad you’ve received that and you like the rug. Thanks so much for your support and encouragement 👍
I came across your channel recently and thoroughly enjoy it (liked and subscribed). Thanks so much!
Ah that’s great to hear - thanks so much for your support!
Hello Hamish,
As just sent a comment, I was suddenly thinking if you’ve considered making a Picture/Photo Book, that captures the beauty of this island, especially showcasing the Seasons, wildlife, plants, ocean, etc? Even a Calendar? Stationary? Etc? Of course you’re extremely busy, but you could partner up with a photographer & whoever else you need? You need an additional Revenue Stream that would help you & your family to continue living & thriving in this amazing life!!! Best of luck!! I look forward to more videos👍🤗🙌🙌!!
Thank you Sonia, this is a lovely idea! Dad had calendars made from his sunset photographs for a couple of years and they were very special. Thanks for watching ☺️
Awesome video. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks so much! ☺️
As lovely as a boat ride can be, the duties of the day often leave one with little energy, or time for a boat ride.
Quite true!
Thank you for sharing. Glad they are safely home. I'm in central illinois, not near water! Sending a bit of support for your efforts with my thanks.
Yes you’re a long way from the open ocean! Thanks so much for your support and encouragement 👍
