I was listening to this without the video and I took my phone out of pocket just to say the same thing, Bandrew... And I've heard it in multiple Blue microphones. Is it possible it's an issue with the cable?
usb 3.0 and 2.0 have nothing to do with it, i know multiple people with a yeti and its just a thing that either is there or is not there, a lot of yeti's have it no matter what usb port you plug them in to, and some dont have it, my best guess as to why a lot have it and some dont have it is due to bad QC standards on the more budget series of mic's, its a shame but that is the only thing i can think of. a reason for me to stay away from blue all together, because if you contact them about it they will tell you that it is because of your usb port, or you droped it or you broke it. in other words you are not taken seriously by blue if you contact them about the whine noise
0:52 "These are two sister microphones. Brother microphones? Sibling microphones. They're friends. They're together... but not in that way" That was a roller coaster
I used a Yeti for about a year and a half and got a great sound out of it with a little work. Nowadays, I use the Rode NT1 which doesn't need much help to sound great. Great video, Mike!
Hey booth junkie. I am starting a stream up soon with my twin brother and I was wondering if you knew if we would be able to use two blue snowballs in the same room without getting any echo? Thanks
I have a Snowball, and it’s actually better than people think. With good EQ and compression, you can get really good sounds out of them (obviously not as good as you could get with high quality mics, but still).
He changed the pickup shape as he went along and the gain of the mic(yeti). As well, it looked like he was getting closer to the mics which would change how the bassyness of his voice is making the difference all the more apparent.
also your brain quickly picked up ways to distinguish the sounds that you can recognize and understand. I thought the same but when i went back you could hear from the start
The microphones may sound the same at first, but I've been using the Snowball for years now and I really notice that the Yeti is way better. You only start to notice it when your ears are already adjusted to the sound of the Snowball after a lot of editing :)
The Best Tip for Beginners starts at the end 12:00 I don't want anyone to miss that! Definitely worth listening to the whole video just to get a good idea of sound quality, features, etc as you can find many similar elsewhere. I'm an indecisive tech junkie on a budget, I really needed to hear that, I knew where to start and had a few in mind including the snowball. Thanks for the video :) I prefer the sound of the snowball, not sure why, I personally find it sound better, this video is helped me decide between any blue line and a non blue line, although I love the sound of blue I will save that for the future as the options available in the ------ are much better for the price.
This is by far the best video to figure out the differences. The constant switching might first sound like a bad idea, but it is actually a "sound" idea and gives us a really good overview. Thank you for this. You made me go for the right choice.
Been watching since the inception of the channel. All the reaper stuff, the acoustic panels, the whisper room, evening. Love it. Keep doing what you do. The resource is invaluable. Thank you!
I have the Snowball Ice (my first mic actually) and it sounds about the same as the regular Snowball. Has an even worse stand though. Its only when you start using "proper" microphones that you realise that these just aren't in the same league. Not bad for starting out though.
This is so helpful, thanks! Also, you're really patient and clear with your presenting style, makes it accessible for everyone without being partronising.
What I like on these kind of videos is to have a short period of silence so that it is possible to hear the inherent noise floor of the microphones. Could you do that in your next videos please? Great comparison btw.
Thanks for this tutorial! I just bought a Yeti yesterday. I made a few test recordings prior to watching your video and they sounded horrible. Turns out I had it on cardioid and was speaking into the back of the mike! After watching your video, I turned it around and (adjusted the gain way down) and now it sounds so much better!
Dude, you're so nice. I'm actually a musician, not a voice artist, and I keep coming back to see your videos even if the content isn't 100% for me. I discovered you in the NTA-1 vs. AT-4040 and found you pretty funny and natural. Amazing job!

To help isolate banging on the table sounds. I took some foam out of a gun case and put it under the mic stand and I can smack the table without any sound going up through the stand. Without it you hear every keyboard stroke and finger tap on the desk loud and clear.
Well, this video just lets me know how much sound treatment on a recording area makes a difference. Goodness do these sound different coming from your setup than mine.
Thanks Mike! Perfect comparison for someone who is looking for a 'quick and dirty' mic solution for VoIP, just a step better than the laptop mic. Answered all my questions, and kept it interesting.
I wish this video was done later because Sherpa has been updated. The Yeti in this video had an overtone sound to it in the background, but the new Sherpa has settings that can change the expander gate settings and fix that. Maybe try refilming this video again? Throw in a blue Ember?
This is really well done and thorough. I am starting a content program to build credibility as a financial advisor, so audio quality directly translates to perceived professionalism and expertise. What really made the difference for me was the proximity effect comparison. The bassiness of the Snowball would make me sound overbearing, and I don't want that. Also, I like being able to monitor the Yeti and change the recording pattern... in case I do interviews and need the figure eight pattern. Thank you!
I can hear a high pitched whine coming from the Yeti. It costs more, so I would assume that it would generally be better, but that whining is driving me crazy.
It has been years since I made any videos. My mic of choice back them was a Shure 55s I got as a kid from a yard sale. It was very directional with its cardiod pattern. I have been thinking of getting a USB ,mic but I am hoping to find the old mic and mixer because it worked so well.
Love these videos. Side note: My first mic was a Snowball. It was such a thin, dry, tinny, pant-load, I didn't even bother to try to sell it. I got much more satisfaction by throwing it in the bin. In retrospect, I wish I'd had someone give me a nice softball pitch so that I could have heard it crack against a nice wooden bat.

Great review. Your channel has really become one of my favorites to watch. If you ever get the chance, I'd love to hear your thoughts on the Kaotica Eyeball just cause everyone I've seen review it never really goes far to prove the claim that it "takes the room out of the equation".
I love how the yeti seems so clean and don’t get me wrong but the snowball just deepens your voice this why young kids use the snowball to sound older and cooler
I feel like absolutely nobody who isn't either looking for it, or is someone who knows about sound, is going to notice one jot of difference between the two, which is probably like 99.9% of viewers/listeners. When you constantly switch between them and talk about the difference it's going to become noticable, but still only slightly to most people, just use one and nobody is going to be thinking that one sounds worse/better than the other. For that reason I'd go for the cheaper option. Don't get me wrong, the video is good and it's goal is to help people make a decision, which it has done for me, so thank you for that.
The yeti has some electrical feedback. When he's quiet on the snowball you don't hear anything but on the yeti there's some sort of frequency you can hear in the background

It may be possible to filter out that buzzing using software. Just throwing in my 2c. I bought the Yeti this week. Edit: my mic doesn't appear to have the high-pitch buzzing sound even when blasting hardware/software gain levels and volume to 100. It's possible the Yeti in this video is defective. Just speculating.
