There was no scientific evidence of it expanding your ribcage, however, it was believed that if your bone structure is still growing then it may help expand, but still not scientific evidence but just a theory
Good point being made here. Too many of this 'certified" trainers and their BS about how "old school" exercise are bad for you. I'm 59 and I've been training since 1976 and DB Pullovers are a staple exercise. Everyone of these clowns with this garbage about how you're going to getting injured. If you do the exercise correctly with the correct weight (this is usually the biggest problem in the gym) this compound exercise hits so may parts of your body., Give it a try.
Started doing pullovers from the beginning back in the late fifties but with a barbell, as done by Eiferman and I think Reeves. Being a young teen with soft cartilage at the time it expanded my rib cage and gave me a great foundation for my chest. Now, at the age of 78 I’ve been making a comeback from Covid and am back up to a 44” chest at 5’7, 165(with my prosthetic). Great exercise, with a barbell or dumbbell.
I still do dumbell pullovers today...and i am 35...been reading Muscle and Fitness Magazines since 1995...been seeing these legends from wayyyy back.....

I still never did them too much it's hard to do and puts a lot of pressure on your back. But no pain no gain right! This guy Mike looks fucking amazing. WOW. not too big just perfect shape.
Dumbbell pullovers are awesome for stretching the lats and targeting the serratus anteriors, which most guys overlook. I found that this exercise, when done properly, also opened up the chest cavity making the chest bigger.
Love this exercise! One of my favorite stables. Been doing them for 40 yrs! He's right. I never see them done at the gym anymore. Except me. Add them as one of ur isolate movements. Super set with lat sweeps. BURN!! 3 X 12 OR 1× 12, 1 x10, 1x 8. Increase weight but keep good form throughout!💪
@@longstrong232 if you feel it in your triceps then you're doing the wrong exercise. You should be keeping your arms rigid but not locked straight. They do the chest but it's really to build the serattus. Not that I've seen my serattus for 30 years 😁

Do this exercise every chest and back day, if it’s chest day, I bring my elbows in more and contract the upper chest at the top of the movement, if it’s back day, I’ll bring my elbows further out and really focus on serratus and lats.
Did these just today; been doing them (again) past month or so. Was good to hear the "pro-tip" re: proper form & the elbow/tricep Frank mentioned. Used to do these back in Zane's time. Didn't have Nautilus back then.....lol.
I was taught this exercise at about 1990 when I was about 14 years old and was told that because I was about to hit my growth spurt, this exercise would help expand my rib cage. It's a great exercise I look forward to doing.
You cannot expand your rib-cage. That's impossible... It would be like saying that curls make your arms longer, or squatting makes you taller.. Lifting weights increases muscle mass/strength and bone density... it does not make bones grow.

@@earlcoles5215 every time I do chest&back exercises I finished with pullover. Good stretch for upper pectoral and the serrations muscle . Ever time I do that, I see my pectoral much higher for sure . And good stretches in latissimus 💪🏻
Mike Zane was a hero of mine back in my youth - more so than Arnold or Robbie or Casey . The dumbbell pullover can also be done lying across the bench just the back touching the bench which is how I have performed it for decades . Depending on hand placement and width of movement while tracking over your face -it has been described as a tricep exercise ,a chest exercise and a back/lat exercise . Many training courses from 1970's would tell you to do a set of pullovers immediately following a set of deep breathing squats to stretch and grow the rib cage .
this is one of my favorite exercises. Its VERY safe. it WON'T hurt you. its awesome for stretching your spine. also if you have difficulies with dislocated vertebrae it "reallignes" the spine, moves the vertebrae back into their usual position (I am talking of mid and upper spine). Also its a very refreshing exercise , don't use too heavy weights, especially at the beginning. Its more about flexibility and getting your spine free of tension
been doing pullovers every week for awhile, by far the best chest pump you’ll get out of any exercise through your entire chest. also brings out your seratus

I recently joined a new gym and I have noticed an up tick in people watching me perform all the old school exercises and incorprating them into their training. Except the teens, they are idoits in the gym!

Also I love the respect Mike gives frank knowing he has so knowledge and the best body on the planet since frank and still is respectable enough to listen and learn!
Thanks Mike and frank your awesome ❤️

I remember reading a muscle and fitness mag from the 90’s and this exercise was there. I have been doing them ever since and now have my 14 year old doing them
I remember buying The encyclopedia of Bodybuilding in 1986 and seeing this pullover and doing it.
Arnold said it would expand the ribcage and pecs
There was no scientific evidence of it expanding your ribcage, however, it was believed that if your bone structure is still growing then it may help expand, but still not scientific evidence but just a theory
I am lucky enough to have bet both of these men in 1997...both classy, professional and polite. good to see them still doing it!
Did you win?
Good point being made here. Too many of this 'certified" trainers and their BS about how "old school" exercise are bad for you. I'm 59 and I've been training since 1976 and DB Pullovers are a staple exercise. Everyone of these clowns with this garbage about how you're going to getting injured. If you do the exercise correctly with the correct weight (this is usually the biggest problem in the gym) this compound exercise hits so may parts of your body., Give it a try.
I’ve been doing this exercise since I started training circa 81 still use it now , as Frank says it’s a great exercise and very underrated
I do this exercise always in my chest and back routine, yesterday I did it, it feels amazing.
79 years old, and still fresh minded, and full of energy. Wish you be healthy and long live, great one. Ty Mike for sharing with us.
A fabulous movement- done Frank's way.... and I've been using them for 30yrs... with no issues...
I still do dumbell pullovers today...and i am 35...been reading Muscle and Fitness Magazines since 1995...been seeing these legends from wayyyy back.....
please tell me there will be more footage of this hangout with you two! legends

Does it work your chest as well as your triceps
@@longstrong232 if you feel it in your triceps then you're doing the wrong exercise. You should be keeping your arms rigid but not locked straight. They do the chest but it's really to build the serattus. Not that I've seen my serattus for 30 years 😁
@@DudeSilad I've never seen the exercise. At first thought it was for hitting your triceps.
@@longstrong232 there is a similar exercise where you keep your arms straight and extend your arms to work triceps. You can use bar or dumbbells. I use one arm at a time and use the other arm to hold the active one. You can go quite heavy.
@@DudeSilad OK I gotta try it
I met Frank over 10 years ago at the Arnold Classic. He is a humble guy. I been doing this exercise for years .better than any machine. When I did see guys do them back in the 80’s they never did them Right. I like to support my whole back with the whole bench and just stress the Lats…That way your lower back is out of the equation and no injuries..
Legends!! This is my favorite exercise. I'm 45 and It's a staple in my workouts. You're right, you don't see to many people doing this one.
Is it for back, chest or triceps?
@@maratonlegendelenemirei3352 Mainly targets upper chest. Also works shoulders, abs, lats, back. You can change form (elbows) to target more towards your lats. It's an awesome stretch. Especially for me since I'm in a wheelchair in a seated position all day. I even feel the stretch down in my hips and upper quads. Cheers!
I still do these. Fantastic pump, and it was also Arnold's favorite movement.

That exercise got my chest huge back in the 80s...I loved the stretch it gave me 💯‼️💪👍✌️
I think it was pretty common in the 80’s everyone back the did those 😀
@@chrisvig123 that’s why their oblique area, serratus is so jacked. i like doing this exercise for lats also.
@Radu Ardeleanu the chest plays a big role in bringing the arms forward in front of you, regardless of the angle
My dad said he use to do these back when bodybuilding said they were a great exercise
Pec fibers run horizontal, in no way do they bring the arms straight down. Maybe if you brought the DBs toward the sternum
I started doing this exercise when I been teenager and still my favorite exercise for 40 years. ( I'm 58 ). Free weights not machines, because I'm old school bodybuilder like Frank.
( NOW body maintaining )
Wow, two of the greatest of all time.
💪🏻😎
I am 63 and still do this, I love the stretch you get from it.
I've done these since the early 90s. I remember learning them from a workout routine by Bill Pearl. And to be fair, any workout movement can cause injury if you aren't using the proper form for that movement.
I just LOVE this excersise. Strongly recommend. Respect from Poland, GrandMaster.
I had a sore rotator cuff two weeks ago, for some reason I thought these would help and for some reason they did, I still don’t understand why but it was instant relief for rotator cuff
I guess because it creates some more mobility in the shoulder due to the stretch?
Sometimes the tendons also shift out of place or are in a bind. This is a good exercise to loosen them up as well.
It works the serratus anterior pretty hard which is one of the most important muscles for scapula mobility, i will start doing it too
I like how this guy respects his tutor Frank and soaks up all that knowledge.... Holy crap he problaby has more women falling at his feet than anyone out there and he dont need to listen to anyone but has obviously worked hard as f to look like that and still wants to improve.which is impressive...I am over 50 and just went to gym for first time after watching this....Now I never going to look like him but if I can gain a little more confidence in myself and just get a little fitter it cant be a bad thing... so Im going to give it a good go. I think I will subscribe. .see if there are other exercises like this cos I have no idea what i'm doing and ache like I have been beaten up after my first try.. .
.. this is so true .. I LOVE THIS COMMENT.. it shows so much respect earned by Frank to Mike.. it’s a deep connection between 2 Legend who earned there fitness Crowns forsure .. LOVE IT👑
Baby don't hurt me
Actually one of my favorite...I'm going try that scooch down thang.....
Been doing that exercise since 1986 . It helps stretch out everything pretty good , opens up the rib cage , good stretch .
100 % That’s exactly what the exercise is for…….stretching not over loading
@@frankz479 Maybe the young lady didn't know what she was talking about but I was thinking maybe there is a relationship between muscle development and the positioning and growth of certain skeletal structures. Maybe not.
That is a great exercise. I always did it as the last exercise of my chest routine. You get such a great stretch which is why I also did flyes on a machine just before it. And BTW I only saw 1 other person doing doing this exercise at the gym I went to for over 20 years.
The only video I have ever seen where someone else is correcting Mike’s form and not the other way around. Legendary
I've been doing these like that for years now, the stretch is incredible, I keep it 20lbs just to be safe but man it gets the pump going.

Wow so weird! I literally did this as part of my workout less than 15 mins ago.i did it at a slight decline, ive previously done them like zane does and its prob better than i did them today. slight decline really emphasises the lats!

This is not a trice workout buddy , if ur targeting ur troves with this ur doing it wrong. This is meant for your last and chest , triceps are secondary muscles here if you are doing it right

One of the best movement for ax tricep neck and chest my father teach it to me he's also from the old school I do it regularly
Mr: Frank Zane . Thanks for the advice . I like doing Pullovers very much , but same situation with elbows . I must change this. I was watching several video from Arnold How he doing this , and he working like piston . Nice good stretch . But i did not pay attention on the elbows . now I know . You and Arnold always will be example how to correctly train . There is not any secret or magic pills ,just dedication and hard work. I feel better now in my age 48 ,then When I was 20-30 .. I Have signed magazine from you The Zane body . When you flexing and sucking stomach in its look like cobra . Awesome
I understand pullovers are a lat movement.....I also understand that the guys from the 70s such as Zane and Arnold did it to build their chest..... 2 questions: how does one work the chest with pullovers because I feel my lats ?
And lastly , what part of the chest is working the most ? Thanks
A legend learning from a bigger legend 💪🏻
My ears are the only thing working when legends are teaching. Can't get enough of these old-school methods.
Training without a shirt in someone else's home gym is kind of disrespectful. I know Zane charges for the privilege of training here, but still.
It’s for the likes
Frank is the zen master! I learned this ex from him in 1983 in M&F magazine. Was a foundation for my lats and intercostals. Very very effective.
A fountain of knowledge lost on todays bodybuilders
I’m 31 ive bee doing this one since i was 17. I learned it from Bill Phillips’ BFL Book.
Maybe bcz its a shit exercise
Nah it’s pretty good. Gets the lats good and the side of your chest, tris and is thought to expand the rib cage muscles when done with deep breathing.
@@larrytate1657 yeah but i never really felt them except if im using cables
this is one of my favorite exercises.
Frank Zane, good health and wellness to you! Cheers from Russia!
