    *Tips for This Workout*
    Value consistency over intensity. It is much better to do 2 minutes 5 times a week than 30 minutes once a week. That's why the workout is so short(to help all of us with time constraints) but still effective if you stick to it.
    That being said, adjust the workout to your muscle capability and conditioning. It is totally fine to do 1 - 3 sets in a single session.
    It gets exponentially harder once you get closer to the top. So it is perfectly fine to get stuck at a stage for weeks or months on end. I've been practicing double bass for 8 years, and only consistently for the past 3 years to get to where I am. It's never a sprint, always a marathon.
    Breaks are good for when you've been practicing this consistently for 2-3 months. Take a break of 1-2 weeks to let your muscles repair and rebuild. You'll find yourself faster and stronger when you return to the workout. But if you haven't been consistent, and if you really want this, GET CONSISTENT!

    I actually just started doing this exact exercise a month or so ago. Up to 195 bpm right now and everytime I play after doing this my legs feel so light and I can play a lot more fluidly. Highly recommend!

      @@ArtOfDrummingHQ Oh I definitely didn't start a month ago haha. I started double bass around 3 years ago, but only recently started getting serious about the practice for it. I started at the highest speed I was comfortable with, 160 bpm, and went up by 1 bpm a day

      I also play for quite a bit longer to build up the endurance, I take Eugene Ryabchenko's approach of doing 20000 strokes per day

    I just did this on the floor without pedals (I'm in a hotel). Some interesting observations:
    - I could keep hitting the floor making a sound with the ball of my feet until about 130. After that the ball of the feet has to stay stuck the the floor and only the heel is swinging up and down.
    - at 170 I noticed my right knee was trying to get into the motion and it was creating some pain. Weird.
    - after 180 my right foot struggles more with keeping the heel floating, my right heel is constantly hitting the floor but my left can still comfortably do the motion suspended.
    - after 190 my right struggles more and it's easier to keep the motion if I do sixteenth notes. My left can do the motion isolated just fine.
    For me most part I've been struggling with my right for many years and now I feel there has been quite a bit of progress. I can actually keep up for the most part and my movements finally look like the teacher's.
    My take out? I need to focus more on being able to do the motion with my right heel suspended, there's some issue there because when I try to lift my heel while doing the motion, my right ankle struggles.

      You're on the right path. Asking and evaluating the differences between your legs will help them balance out!
      Though on the floor is quite different from the pedals. My heels would touch the floor to a higher tempo because the floor is a flat surface, and the pedals are slanted upwards. But also it's too difficult to let them still touch the floor above 170. It would be more energy efficient to have them floating a bit in the air and the up and down motion becomes smaller, but still more than enough to move the pedal to get loud enough strokes. And the motion is powered by calf/shin whatever combination of those 2.

      Oh yeah if you have the time and commitment for it, it does activate lots of different muscle groups for sure (like Thomas Lang, he's a boss with heel down and up). But unfortunately I don't hahaha, so I have to choose 1 and get good at only 1. Neat sharing by the way Sonus!

    I noticed the feet move down the pedal (for leverage) as the tempo increases.
    Toes start over the red pedal dots and slowly move down & are below the dots by approx 150bpm & beyond.

    This exercise is great I tend to start at the beginning and do each stage everyday or every other day and try to do both feet together sometimes during the workout as well. Independently each leg is doing great up to 180 but I'm working on syncing the two feet together it still feels foreign

    would you recommend a warmup before this, or do the early stages serve as a warmup?

      If you're a beginner, definitely use a slower stage to warmup first. If you've been doing this for a while, there's no real need, because it's only 2 minutes. If you're intending to do a more intensive workout at your limit or past your limit involving more than 1 set, definitely warmup. Generally, you tweak for your current muscle conditioning and choice of sets/intensity. Hope that helps!

      I prefer drumming with shoes 99% of the time, only because I injured one of my ankle tendons from overplaying after 15 years of drumming. And playing barefoot made the problem worse. So whenever I'm practicing/playing now I use shoes(You can tell the change if you look at all my more recent double bass videos). Exception is sometimes I'm at home and I wanna do something for a short duration on the electronic drum kit and I'm lazy haha. So that's one thing you have to take into account when drumming barefoot - long term injuries from absorbing all the shock directly.
      The advantages of playing barefoot are you feel the pedal more directly. But to me it isn't a big difference so I don't miss anything about playing barefoot. Shoes will give you more mass and allow you to play louder more easily if that's what you're going for. Anyway I really don't recommend barefoot drumming if you want to ensure the best health of your feet 10-20-30 years down the road so you can keep playing and practicing.

    Hi! Thank you for your videos, which are always very useful!
    I was wondering if you had any advice to give me, because I have been practicing double bass for several years now but I am still not able to play consistently at very low tempos. I feel my legs tightening and racing very quickly, especially at low tempo.
    I can’t find any solution elsewhere. Any idea?

      It could be you're tensing your thighs and trying to rely on your calves or shins to play slower. You need your thighs and big muscle groups to play low tempos. try without pedals and on the floor. Make 16th note strokes on the floor without pedals and at 80-140bpm. Without the pedals, there's no spring for you to rely on and you really need your thighs to get a steady tempo and sound. Do that for 3 weeks(every other day 5-10 mins is plenty), rest 1 week. Repeat for 3 months, and come back here and let me know how it goes!

Just another question: how do you keep the balance, when lifting both legs? I always tend to fall forward and I don't see how my abs can counterbalance that, whithout holding me back very much.       You can try sitting a bit further back, adjust your throne slightly higher, and sit nearer to the drums (have your legs not stretch out more than 90degress) or you can try the opposite and see which one fits for your body stature. But it's physically impossible to lift both legs at the same time and suspend them in the air without leaning back or drawing in your legs. You don't need to do that to play well however.

    Hi, I have been stuck at 145bpm for ages, and I think it’s because of lack of consistency. How would you recommend using this exercise? Just play 145 for 2 mins or work up from 90 all the way to whatever I can muster? Feeling very defeated at the moment unfortunately.

      Consistency is very key. But you gotta make it suit your lifestyle and your goals. Obviously what you're doing isn't working out. So you've got to change something about it. For example if you're getting frustrated, step away from it and do something totally different. If you want to come back, that means you still want it. And then you can try on a routine that might work for you. I'm going to say 3 times a week is the minimum, and to start at your threshold. It's difficult for me to tell you more than that because I don't know your history, or what you've been trying to do or how you've been practicing. But definitely change it up if you're not seeing results for a long while. some people need to practice more, some people need to practice less depending on their situations. (over-fatigued muscles need rest, under-fatigued muscles need work). Hope that helps a little. I got super frustrated many times before too but I kept switching the routine and duration of my practice, while keeping the training workouts relatively the same.

    do you feel your bass pedals have an effect on how well your workouts go? i have a tama speed cobra, and not the direct drive pedals you have. do you reckon i will be working harder, less, or negligible?

      In my opinion, negligible. I have Speed Cobras as well and they do a good job staying out of the way up to the ~230/240bpm level I cap out at atm. Direct drive vs chain are no doubt different feels but in the end it's just what type of feel you prefer in conjunction with what techniques you're utilizing. Until you're pushing the real extremes, maybe 260/270/280+ bpm, pedal type isn't going to be nearly as big a factor as your actual technique/how much time you put into practicing

      Oh I do most of my practice on a dw5000, which uses a chain drive. This is because I teach at a music school on an acoustic kit, and that kit's pedals are the DW. They do make me work slightly harder, but it's good though. As I appreciate the strengthening of my muscles as a result. And then when I'm at home on my Roland kit with my demon drive direct pedals, I do get to play a little faster with slightly more ease. But it's not a huge difference. Maybe I can play 5bpm faster more easily? I must say though that maintenance of the pedals helps though. Like checking the parts are not rusty, and properly oiled. I used to do zero of that, then when I started cleaning and oiling my pedals, geez the difference is instantly noticeable. But of course technique and muscle power is 90%, and all these other factors affect the other 10% (just my opinion and experience so far)

      another inquiry: considering the drive mechanism wont affect my effort, do you think longer footboards would add/subtract from the effort as well?

      Hey I don't truly understand the physics of the long versus short board, but in my experience, longboards help me position my feet further down the footboard which is the way I like to play faster passages. Also my feet are closer to my body as a result which helps with overall balance. If I were to do that with the shortboards, I would have too little real estate of pedal and end up having to work harder to move them. Hope that helps :) however I have seen people play way up on the pedals, nearer to the chain and they blaze through. But most people I see (using calf muscles) play like halfway or further down the pedals.

    I can only play ankle technique either very slow, or very fast without much control. Which speed would be best for practicing? Slower bpm?

      You have a problem of mid range, mid combo muscles. Here's what I did, I found out my comfortable ankle was around 215bpm. Then everyday I started at 215bpm for 30 secs, then lowered bpm by 1 and did that for 30 secs. Repeated another 3 sets. Next session I did the same, and within weeks I lowered my ankles to 200bpm.
      While doing that the other part of my workout was to work from bottom up. And soon enough they meet in the middle and you have all the ranges covered

      If double bass is your long term forever journey, go for it!!! I play a dw5000 chain drive at work, and these direct drives at home. The direct drives feel easier for maintaining speed. I love them both though.

    Very nice for control at all speeds.
    Is there any hip flexor use at higher tempos or just the rebound of the pedal.

      I still use my hip flexors up to 190, but less and less as I get faster. It's more a combination of : hip flexor to stabilize the legs, and the calf/shin muscles to constantly propel the pedal, depending on what you have been using and practicing naturally. I remember a long time ago, I couldn't use much of my calf at all, and my left would always default to using more hip flexor because it was way stronger and my calf was underdeveloped. I just kept working on it keeping the idea of strengthening my left calf gradually and sticking to consistent exercises. And gradually I could feel my calf experiencing more and more fatigue although I was still using mostly hip flexor. This was a good sign as I then knew my calf was working. And sure enough 1 1/2 years of training, my calf can do most of the propelling work now. However for my right leg, since it was already used to playing more with the shin, and some calf, that's what I let it do. An example of a speed metal drummer with different right and left leg technique is Derek Roddy. You can watch his drumeo lesson to see that his left and right plays differently. But he goes super fast anyways. Hope this helps :D

    great video, in the first shot are you pushing forward with your foot or pushing down with your heel?

      Or I've tried both, you foot will push down with the muscle combination that makes it easiest. My right can use more ankle to push first stroke. My left needs to use more thigh to push that first stroke though. The constant working of all muscle groups will allow you to get better at that first stroke
