I recommend doing this routine 3x at least, 5x at most a week and resting for 2 days at least. Also take into account all the other activities that you are doing weekly like other kinds of drumming practice, work, exercise, everything adds up. Hence the intensity and consistency looks different for everyone. Some need to practice more, some need to pace themselves. You might have to stop other kinds of intense activities that work your legs and feet and devote more into double bass training to ensure that you have enough consistency yet don't over fatigue them. Making double bass a priority is essential for speed and control. It is one of the hardest things around to be good at. Adjust the entire routine's speed to fit your current thresholds. Stick to 1 tempo for an entire week or 3 practice sessions at least. Then go to the next and do that tempo for 3 sessions or for that whole week. If you increase by 1bpm or 1% you will increase your bpm by 48 in a year and that is A LOT. If you're not interested in building fill vocabulary, then you can skip exercises 8 and 9. But they will help you build a better overall facility of using double bass if you do them. Just that the pattern work can be more challenging to some than the other exercises so you have to slow them down a lot more at first. The more you train, the more your muscles and nervous system levels up, the more you can train to go even faster. So crank it up to 4-5x a week, or double the tempo or volume in a single session. You want to be challenging your body as it moves forward. But again factor in recovery periods. Recovery periods : These are days where your muscles get an opportunity to repair and grow. If you keep training with the same intensity every day, your muscles will not be able to grow. So have days where you either don't do any double bass drumming at all, or lessen the tempos by 20-30bpm. Or work on other stuff that will force you to slow down (new fill or coordination ideas) or even just practice more hand intensive stuff. I like to take 2 days off a week(this is when I work on youtube videos/social media/answer community questions), and train hard the other 5 days. PDF to routine here (free) www.artofdrumminghq.com/product-page/double-bass-routine-exercises Hope this helps, remember Practice + Patience = Progress
I’m going to incorporate this warmup into my daily routine. I love that you look at not only drumming, but the functions that drumming requires of our bodies. And how we have to take the time to care for our bodies to continue doing what we love. Playing the drums. Really appreciate your effort in making these videos. Thank you
Really appreciate your wonderful comment, hope this helps! Just be careful not to overdo it because you're adding this onto your existing daily routine. It could add too much fatigue to your muscles, but try it out and see how it feels after 2 weeks :D
Excellent lesson! You are one of the few players and teachers who emphasizes breathing. Breathing is so incredibly important in drumming that I'm surprised most do not give it much thought.
I cannot thank you enough for this man. Used to be able to hit those fast tempos no problem when I was a teenager and doing sports full time, so I had the stamina and leg muscle tone to do it. But over time I've since lost that endurance and muscle memory to get to those higher speeds. Will be using these exercises for sure! Love the content man.
This video helps a lot, I also wanna share a bit weird hack method when you got no time is when you lay in your bed just relax your legs and imagine doing ankle motion exercise an the pedals, it makes you use just your ankle and calf muscles, it helped me a lot
@@ArtOfDrummingHQ but when it comes to exercise ive found this more accurate than the other metal teacher. I like the exercise for real for real, specially for my left foot. Keep struggling.. Keep it up master. Thanks
Woah! You just helped this jazz trained drummer with a right leg condition to finally take on double-pedal. My friend gave me one of his double pedal saying I was so eager to try it but I never really had the nerve to set it up to practice seriously until now. I just followed all the routine with just my feet on the floor up until the fill-in patterns, and I could actually do it! Sure, it was far from perfect - and far from a perfect way of practicing - but if I can do it, anyone can. I've been playing for nearly 20 years and haven't found anything motivating me to seriously practice again between rehearsals and shows. Something in the flow of this routine really works, and my leg feel better than before after the stretches! Thank you so much!!!
Nice, I wasn't sure if people would actually do the stretches or skip it. But your 20 years of experience can tell you things most people don't know :D I'm glad this was motivating for you. And I've also been drumming for 20 years so HIGH FIVE!!!
Do check out my list of double bass lessons in my playlist, there are a lot of lessons there about technique, settings etc ruclips.net/p/PLqB3qW_j0ovLE10n8cmj5yPpGYjcyuoq4
@@ArtOfDrummingHQ i already have, it is very helpful, thanks. Part of the problem is i have cheap pedals. I plan to upgrade to some speed cobras soon so i expect progress
@Milomir Simonovic getting quality pedals are a game changer! If you get good on cheap pedals, a well-configured Iron Cobra or DW9000 will be magical haha
This video is so good. I love that you even added a stretching section to this routine, very underrated element and very important aswell as overlooked by most
I think that, when it comes to the doublefoot technique, each drummer as a separate individual can achieve improvement only through an individual approach. Ok, of course there are some general rules, such as sitting position, correct posture, properly adjusted bass pedals, chair, sitting height, angle at which the legs are in relation to the static part of the body, balance, etc. But in order to really develop a technique that will allow you to play demanding patterns at different BPMs as well as complex rhythms, fast doublefoot sections, speed changes, adaptation and more, you must keep one thing in mind: and that is PRACTICE!!! In the end, it all boils down to hours and hours of boring exercises and huge amounts of dedication, patience, and love. Over time, that wonderful peripheral nervous system of ours seems to develop its own autonomy and your extremities start to "do the job" without you struggling and fighting with yourself. And why do I say that an individual approach is the only logical choice? Well, simply for the reason that we are all different in terms of personal characteristics, physical structure and certain innate qualities that allow us to do something that is unimaginable to others with ease, or that even with the greatest efforts we cannot do something that is a piece of cake for others. When you find yourself facing a wall (and we all do sooner or later) then don't try to knock it down, or jump over it. No! Simply bypass it or turn in a completely different direction that may take you a longer way but you will eventually reach your destination. Work hard on yourself and believe in yourself and trust your inner voice sometimes. And let's not forget that there are some really great drummers with completely different, unorthodox or even "wrong" style ,but they are playing the drums like hell. Look for example Dave Lombardo and his style ,sitting position and pretty much everything about him is different but he is killing it. Or a complete opposite Mike Portnoy which sitting position is extremely high ,it seems like he is almost standing. Or Gene Hoglan,oh gosh he has a unique style ,even his shoes are different. There are many great drummers with great doublefoot technique but theirs style and drum setup in general is totally unique.
Yes it's great to pay attention to one's uniqueness. And also to be objective as to how those drummers you mention are achieving what they wanna do as well as what are their limitations. For example Portnoy and Lombardo do not play as fast as the speed metal guys. So I reference more of those other guys as my pool of study. And then there start to be more similarities between setup and muscle use 😉
I just got my first e kit and have been struggling with pedal rudiments and techniques,I can't say I finished the whole video I had to tap out alot sooner but I'll keep working at it, it's extremely detailed and well done easy to follow for a new player like me, thank you a ton for posting something like this the stretches at the end was a really nice touch too I'm sure alot of people actually needed that I know I did I keep forgetting lol
Make sure you check out the pinned comment! This video is not meant to be done only at this tempo. Adjust using the speed function and level up progressively every week. Appreciate the feedback and the kind words too. Any questions feel free to ask
Thank you so much.... this is the same thing that people are selling and you are doing it for free ....!!!!I will be using this tool for practice ....thank you again and keep up the good work brother
You're most welcome, read the pinned comment for how I used this routine a year. Knowing how many times to use this and what the gradual progression should be is super important to doing it right. All the best to your journey💯
I would also suggest working harder on your left. I got this from thomas lang but its also kinda common sense, but do something like 1 bar of 4/4 8th noted on your right, then 3 bars on your left I also would switch it up and do the right for 1 beat then the other 3 beats do the left. Do any variation you can think of like that Its helped a lot with my left foot control since i tend to alternate all the time unlike more drummers who will always lead with right foot on triplets or quintuplets It also inadvertently helped with my speed too
Excellent suggestion. Totally agree 💯 the weak foot needs 3x the amount of work to catch up and that's usually where people are capped when it comes to progress.
Just picked up a double kick pedal after playing only a single pedal for 35 years. Your video has been very helpful. And thank you for talking about breathing and stretching!
Oh hey it's my pleasure! But don't need to overdo the stretching, only what's comfortable for you. And check out my new updated routine for 2024 here ruclips.net/video/SM-Wc6AOki0/видео.htmlsi=yfCPkMmnS302S3Hf
Try my 2.0 routine, I made some changes to make it even more effective, although both will serve you well and if you feel bored of one or the other you can switch between them too. Here's 2.0 ruclips.net/video/SM-Wc6AOki0/видео.html
Thank you so much dude, i couldn't keep a steady tempo with double pedals to save my life. A couple of days of practice and now i have noticed the difference. Im already so much better
That's awesome. You owe it to yourself for doing this routine consistently the past few days :) I've got a 2nd double bass routine you can also try ruclips.net/video/SM-Wc6AOki0/видео.htmlsi=jHx0ab13PUezKsLs although you can just stick to this for the next month. Or alternate between them when you get bored of the other one. Changing up the routine now and then helps re-stimulate the muscles. Also routine 2.0 is more focused on muscle development which is very essential for the higher speeds.
The more you train, the more workload your muscles can take. So if you've been doing that for awhile, you actually can keep up the intensity of having both and they're going to help each other. You'd know if after weeks of your current intensity your legs recover to go again and again and there is no pain or injury. I realize I'm able to do more legwork too nowadays on top of teaching 8 hours a day. But 5 years back I couldn't. My legs would totally burn out and I'd experience pain in my ankle joint.
Thank you so much! You are a fantastic instructor. I love yoga, but I often get caught up in working too much to provide myself time to stretch. I really appreciate the inclusion of the stretches at the end, as it encouraged me to take time to relax instead of pushing onward with practice. Thank you!
Cool! I used to do a bit of yoga but now I just stretch the muscles that need stretching haha. It's just what I need to prevent my injuries from returning, so that I can keep playing and practicing. Also the stretches help with muscle recovery and repair. Cheers thanks for noticing and I hope these exercises help you!
Dude this is so unbelievably helpful after the first double bass exercise before practicing each foot I did that and instantly felt more loose. Thank you so much
That's great to hear! Check out my newer ultimate double bass drumming routine 2.0, You can use both of them together or alternate between them. ruclips.net/video/SM-Wc6AOki0/видео.html&lc=UgyAc0mAMHo78JWow5l4AaABAg
i just got my first double pedal a few days ago, i have been playing on a single pedal for 7 years now. this video is literally making my shins and calves die yet say thank you. Really taking your videos and other tips to not overdo practice but this scratches that itch in my brain. I shall control myself. Thanks for the knowledge man!!
Welcome to the double kick universe! Well if you wanna practice go ahead!!! Just take a rest when it starts to feel too sore and you don't recover within 24hrs, otherwise no harm really. All our bodies are diff. Have the most fun anyway!!
Great video, definitely gonna try it out. I finally got back behind my kit after about 5 years of away time. I have Iron Cobra Pros but have played other kits that I felt much more comfortable on and felt like I could get to high BPMs very easily. Getting my pedals tuned is a constant battle and I feel like I have a brain-block when trying to play faster. I'm going to keep working on my mind muscle connection and start using this routine. Thanks
make sure the pedals are not too loose in tension. Or too tight that you have trouble adapting. I use maxed spring tension on my pedals but trained gradually to get here. The tension needs to help support the weight of your foot and also help with the rebound of the beaters. Every other setting I don't mess with. The block you're talking about is what prevents people from playing faster. The block exists like a boss fight. You have to slay the boss to advance. Only a small percentage can advance because this boss is hard. Very hard. All the best practice and patience :D need anymore help just ask!
Very helpful. I can do this now completely on time. Took me a month. 2 hours everyday after work I practice feet only until I got that down then I throw in my hands after a week of feet only. Now I have altered this a bit. When you do the single foot isolation exercise I don't do one foot at a time because I needed to feel and compare so I trade off 3 on right 3 on left then I do 5 on right and 5 on left back to back. It helped me compare and get accurate feeling on both feet. However I do isolation on limbs sometimes for a night still. This is great. Thank you.
I do that modification too from time to time! And I have a few other modifications to change things up every few weeks. Glad it's been working out for you, all because of your consistent work!!
I have been practicing with this video on all my techniques and I think it is helping me gradually still have a long way to go. I had to start out with it slower then increase gradually wish me luck.
@@ArtOfDrummingHQ I will definitely do that I had a really good band practice tonight especially with my drumming and my double base so I think it is helping but I will definitely do that.
What this really highlighted for me was the need to RE setup my kit. I play on a small electronic drumkit. Which I am TRULY grateful to even have, but at 194cm tall, I have specific sizing/spacing needs that aren't being addressed especially when I need to get to higher speeds/focus. To the point that even my left kick pedal is sliding while I play. Thanks for the great advice and the fun exercise!
Yeah setup can help a big deal especially from what you're saying about your size. Could sell your e kit and gett 1 where you can space the set out more ideally? Thanks for checking this video out man!
@@ArtOfDrummingHQ you're very welcome! I'm still able to make it work and I'm going to have to make adjustments with what I have as space is at s premium, presently. Thankfully, I still have some things that can be done to make this easier on me! XD
Thank you so much for the wonderful and thoroughly prepared material and knowledge you share. I'd like to share my own experience, which is to do the exercises involving groove (hihat + snare) legs only so as to remove any dependence from the other limbs. Also same exercise exchanging lead foot and also each foot separately (e.g. for straight 8ths I do just the "end" with the left foot, or even try to play the "e" in 16th mode etc). Lots of permutations by following a limb isolation approach.
hell fucking yes dude. I finally started to take ankle technique seriously and i can now say im starting to get the motion down! Its no longer coming from my shins! Still lots of work to do but you are such a godsend! Thank you!!!😊
@@ArtOfDrummingHQ I've been trying to brute force my way for years using the "incorrect" ankle technique where I was noticing my shins were on fire and couldn't progress past 170 bpm 16ths for a full measure. The last week or so I've just been focusing on singles, mostly my weak foot, and things are starting to click. My goal is to hit 185 bpm by may or June and I think I can get there if I stick with it.
This video is not only extremely helpful to develop feet technique, it is also teaching self awareness of the body, which most of the time we don't pay attention and then problems can happen, so for me it is a very valuable info from the beggining to the end of the video, stretches included, i'll start aplying this method, i think it's gonna work for me, also i'm subscribing for more! Keep up your great encouraging content! 🥁🔥
What about pedal type? Spring tension? When to use your quads and went to do use your ankles? pivoting techniques? Foot placement at different speeds? And all the other important dynamics? ??? On a positive note, I liked the inclusion of stretching and relaxation at the end
ive done it and it really helps me get better as a beginner for double kick. thanks alot for making this video…. i will subscribe to this channel. more power to your channel
I am so shit at this point. Got through exercises 1 & 2 at the 100 and 110bpms but had to drop exercise 3 & 4 to 117bpm, Exercises 5 & 6 to 69(nice)bpm. 7 I couldn’t get going and need to practise performing the exercise, and 8 was okay at 117bpm. The stretches felt good too. I’ll be back in 6 months! Thank you for this. 😊
Cheers! You can also try my double bass routine 2.0 which has 1 important modification although the rest of the workout follows the same principles in this video. Try alternating between the 2 workouts over a 1 year span. If you get bored switch, or switch at monthly/weekly intervals ruclips.net/video/SM-Wc6AOki0/видео.htmlsi=LJlPzaDl8uDO4xf5
Love this! People wana play like Matt Garstka (me included…lol) right after hearing him…killer warm up I’m gonna try. Also Congratz on 50k subs! Not an easy thing to do but you deserve it for the killer content you put out for the drumming community!!
I think you already play like Matt! Let me know if you do try this routine how it goes. It will help me to improve the format for future videos. Cheers and thank you for your well wishes too!
Awesome stuff, I've been incorporating yoga as full body warm up before my drum routine and as a cool down /stretching post for about a year and it's made a big difference in my recovery time and general drum fitness. Im so happy to see other fellow drummers demonstrating their physical routines in conjonction to their drum practice... Also loving the double bass routine ..ill try to remember to update in a month or two, note the improvement. Cheers man!
Thanks, I'm one of those guilty of not paying attention to my body until I got injured. Haha now it's absolutely necessary for growth, glad to hear your experience as well!!! And update whenever!
Oh man. It's incredibly frustrating how bad my left foot is. It's terrible. I can't even do the fifth exercise with my left leg and I'm a drummer in a Thrash Metal band lol. It's hindering my double bass progress tremendously. I hope I can get it up to speed with this routine. Would you recommend isolated exercises for the left foot in addition to this routine? Thanks
Yes totally I recommend doing this ruclips.net/user/shortsVvVr41Bi6D8?feature=share as well to reprogram your left leg muscles. But the key is to actually take it slower. Like don't be afraid of going back to 100bpm or less if that's what you can manage to be in control. Then do this routine way slowed down 3x a week. And only increased the tempo by 2bpm per week. On top of that do the exercise in the linked video 3x a week too.
Hi, thank you SO MUCH for these lessons! I realized that my left foot was in serious need of improvement from working on your exercise #5 - even with feet alone the left is much weaker compared to my right. I've come to the (most obvious) conclusion that if I ever hope to gain speed and precision with my double bass rolls, then both feet need to be at least CLOSE to the same level of control. I would previously work on singles and doubles for my left foot alone, but exercise #5 approaches this problem from a completely different angle - 3's & 5's! AWESOME! Thanks again!! 😁😎👍
I've got a short video coming up about left foot. And how I like to approach training it for speed and control. Hope it motivates you :) thanks I really appreciate your feedback and your kindness!

Excelent video! Son muchos ejercicios sencillos sumado a una vision global de los problemas mas comunes a los que nos enfrentamos! Mi rutina es muy similar y aprendi mucho con tus comentarios para mejorar! keep drumming!
First make sure your pedals are working for you and not fighting your body, check with this video ruclips.net/video/iDlXB2NmM50/видео.htmlsi=MvrHL6XKOzMIMwmw. Theb find your weak muscle links, which one is having trouble contracting fast and controlled, and generally work on them all to increase speed and control(without pedals). Then hop on the drumset and dedicate practice time using these exercises to hone pedal technique. My Routine 2.0 is newer and better and incorporates those muscle group exercises ruclips.net/video/SM-Wc6AOki0/видео.htmlsi=gFGaLEqZQJ7ElbTp until you can control the lower leg muscles+upper leg muscles will you be able to play at all speeds in a controlled manner
I went through a financially hard time and had to sell my drum kit I spent years building on and I didn't drum for about a year and a half and now I'm doing exercises on a cheap practice pad and following this video to strengthen my double bass again on a hard wood floor. Any suggestions? I will eventually build up on another kit but I would like to find ways to still keep myself warmed up and to practice while I save up
Try my newer workout. it's got some floor exercises already for muscle strengthening ruclips.net/video/SM-Wc6AOki0/видео.htmlsi=NC_-3zaLOTeZlmqk I love your tenacity. even in hard times you're motivated and doing what is necessary to still grow. Try out that routine and let me know how it goes!

cant lie i already nailed the process to take my double kick to the next level, but, this video was still great to watch and will still be apart of my journey - maybe its just cos this guy is a top dude
That's awesome 👍 happy you've got your double kick down, and I know you'll definitely keep growing in that regard since you're this open to practicing methods :)
Would you recommend playing an exercise where you only use the ankle technique. Am I right I saying when you are using your calfs your bouncing the pedal like a basketball with your foot which means your activating your calfs?.
Yes you're helping the pedal swing back and forth without losing momentum. I highly recommend activating the calves separately and in combination with your thighs too. Got more exercises abd explanations in this other video for you to try ruclips.net/video/seZmjYkvIBw/видео.html
I use “stick control” But apply it to feet. Also, has anyone ever thought of some kind of lock to slide your foot into like bicycles have on their pedals … does that sound like something that would work?
Hi! thank you for the video, I've been practicing this method for 2 weeks now. I have a question about exercise #6 (1.7x tempo for a minute): in this exercise I feel that my technique is wrong and it's very hard for me to do it, you said tempo can be slower, I feel comfortable playing it at a lower speed than exercise #3,4. Is it correct to lower this exercise so much? One more question, I want to learn ankle tecnique and you on your channel advised how to do it (video where you tapping on the floor), how do you advise to combine these exercises with routine and at what tempo can I start this exercises to develop ankle technique?
Oh you certainly can lower the video to where you're more comfortable for that exercise. Everyone's built differently and on different paths along their journey. My routine cannot possibly cater to every individual in just the exact right way in terms of tempo and bpm increase. I suggest trying the whole video slower and read the pinned comment if you haven't. I added lots of details there on how you can use this routine. As for the ankle technique, you definitely want to start them at whatever speed you are able to roughly do the ankle technique at, could be 100, could be 110, only you can find that out yourself. And apply the same practice format I shared in my pinned comment. Take another 10minutes to practice your ankle technique on top of this double bass routine. So it's a total of 20 minutes, no more than 4x a week. Always rest to let the muscles fortify. And repeat this same process for a year.
I appreciate your video. I can't seem to hold my legs up in the air (to not rest my heals against the floor). Do I need to tighten the springs enough to hold my legs up?
What tempos are you playing at? There's no need to hold them up in the air unless they're constantly playing around 150bpm++. it can be a waste of energy to hold those positions at slower speeds cos the food isn't able to rest at all. But tell me more so I know what's happening
Great routine Sir! I want to try this for a month but first... Should I change my drive shaft before starting? My left pedal doesn't have rebound at all compare to the right one that goes to infinity. Second, I would love to see you play some extreme metal stuff exploding that speed. And finally. Congrats for the 50k Subs! 🪅🥳🎉 That's a great achievement right there! One of many more milestones to come.
if you can afford it get the upgrade. If not it's actually fine, I also practiced the last 4 years without that upgraded drive shaft and still reached beyond 200bpm. It's just harder of course, but it does make your left leg work harder (which could make the difference) Thank you for your well wishes :D It's been 10 1/2 years of this channel, so 50k didn't come easy at all haha. And as for songs, do you have any to recommend?(No promises though, because I'm swarmed trying to make all the content that I have planned currently.
@@ArtOfDrummingHQ @ArtOfDrummingHQ Yeah! A long road behind and an even longer ahead. Keep going. I would like to suggest some from Dummu Borgir maybe or some Slipknot (that for sure will get tons is views), but it has to be something you like so I'd rather to see some of your choice. 🤓
For sure it does. The stock shaft is quite stiff and if you wanna compensate with spring tension then the response between right and left becomes even greater.
Check out my single pedal technique here ruclips.net/user/shortsBI3NTywGQCM?si=11cFCOMGZXl3_yGc and you gotta practice mastering that, and also improve the speed and strength of your muscles with this 2nd video here(applied to your right leg)ruclips.net/user/shortsH-Iu3bImsJE?si=txZfDAlaluJcBV5u. Im drumming for 25yrs and still struggeling :( - i crash at the faster tempo’s unable to control, even practising this for years. - thinking it might be the pedal settings? Are your beater touching the skin if you’re in resting position? -what is your spring tention? :( Any advice? For now i keep on going and trying..
What tempo are you able to play comfortable 16th notes now? What does your routine look like. Whats the tempo that you're struggling to get? Spring tension does help, it should be tight enough such that it helps the beater rebound but not offer too much resistance. My beaters don't touch the head when I lift my heels up but they go near the head. Spring tension also only matters past 170bpm, so if you can tell me more by answering the above questions, I can better help you. For now you can watch this video for more macro important information on double bass practice ruclips.net/video/Q_QfPcSdFzc/видео.html
Thanks for this content, I started this routine 4 weeks ago after several years of not playing drums. The results are already there. The first days were hard and then I had a lot of ease. So I have a question: Can I readjust the tempo faster or is it better to continue with the original tempo?
Hey glad you're finding success already, read the pinned comment, I didn't intend this to be practiced only at 1 tempo but all the details are in that comment :) cheers!
Hi Wey, compliments on your great workout videos and thanks so much for posting them!! You are a genius! They are really good and I think they will be more helpful, beneficial and of effectiveness in the long run than the bass drum mastery or drum-technique academy video course. greetings, Dave
Hi Dave, I hope so too. This is all my heart and soul in this video to help more people achieve their double bass goals. Thank you for your super kind words!
Hey, i got to your videos over shorts and the Trick drive shaft short. I really like your way to explain. Myself learned that beside the drums building up muscles (calf and hips/thighs), core strength and stability and stretching them properly gave me a lot of progress and confidence. Especially bringing up my weaker arm and leg at the same muscle power, stability and endurance like my main ones. Now i am training my ankle technique. Do you tried to "find" your comfort tempo to feel the swing? Like i am starting at 190 and could do thr motion with both of my feed for like 4 min without much effort. You made one video where you told to using in midtempo 150-180(190) both ankles and hips/thighs. Did you started thst from lower bpm or higher bpm?
I went from low all the way up. I didn't start from high up as that didn't work for me. My control was very sloppy and I ended up learning not being able to use it accurately when playing. So everything from the ground up for me. 140bpm all the way to 220bpm.
great video, but i find i get way more out of it if i do a longer warmup, with more sixteenth notes and increasing tempos. it helps me be at peak performance for the actual exercises
Oh yes that can be more ideal. But that's why my exercises also don't hit peak tempo until exercise 7. It's a gradual progression between all the exercises.
As a drum teacher for 15 years i have to say that this video is very helpfull to all my students. Simple, direct to the point and efective. congrats!!
Wow it's a big honour for another teacher to use my stuff. Thank you so much, I really appreciate this. You have the best week!

Hope this helps, remember Practice + Patience = Progress
Thank you i will be adding this on my daily routine!!
@@parsanchhetri8123 Hope it helps!
Same
Someone should also show drummers lower back exercises. So many old school drummers have back problems from sitting with bad posture
That's true. I had neck and shoulder problems from a hunched neck. Currently fixing it for the past 2 months.
Bro I've been following you since you had like 5k subscribers. Your channel is a blessing to the drum community. God bless you ❤
Woah man it's been 7 years ever since. Thanks for sticking around!!! Hope I've helped you with all those videos.
Excellent lesson! You are one of the few players and teachers who emphasizes breathing. Breathing is so incredibly important in drumming that I'm surprised most do not give it much thought.
Oh I learnt this from the legend Benny Greb. You're right though, being able to breathe just shows how in control you are of what you're doing.
Great! Saw Benny in a clinic many years ago. Learned a few tips and tricks which I still use to this day!
Oh my pleasure:) I hope you find that speed again, just crank this routine 4x a week for 6 months.
This video helps a lot, I also wanna share a bit weird hack method when you got no time is when you lay in your bed just relax your legs and imagine doing ankle motion exercise an the pedals, it makes you use just your ankle and calf muscles, it helped me a lot
love the soundtrack change for the stretching segment lol. this video rocks.
You rock man 😎💯
Thank you master for this one. New subscriber here.
Thank you and welcome aboard! I'm no master though... my double bass speed is sub par compared to metal masters.
@@ArtOfDrummingHQ but when it comes to exercise ive found this more accurate than the other metal teacher. I like the exercise for real for real, specially for my left foot. Keep struggling.. Keep it up master. Thanks
Your material is gold, it shows that you do it with love and dedication
Thank you so much, appreciate your kind appreciation :D
That's all good man. But HOW to play above 140 is the problem. How to place the foot, position, basic movement...that allows you to start to play
That will make for a great video. I'll give it a lot of thought and probably make one.
Simple and to the point. Simple exercises are the most practical.
Great lesson, man. Thanks for sharing
Glad you liked it!
This video is so good. I love that you even added a stretching section to this routine, very underrated element and very important aswell as overlooked by most
Cheers, thank you and I hope you benefit from this video!
Totally agree with you, each individual is unique and different. Good thoughts dude.
So helpful for me because I'm using now double pedal thanks so much
All the best to your double bass drumming journey!
This is great, not only does it improve speed but also control/independence. Props
Props to you too for the wonderful comment!
As someone who's been trying to get better foot control consistently for double kick, this is invaluable, i will try this today.
let me know how it goes, it will also serve to help everyone else trying this for the first time!
I got this from thomas lang but its also kinda common sense, but do something like 1 bar of 4/4 8th noted on your right, then 3 bars on your left
I also would switch it up and do the right for 1 beat then the other 3 beats do the left. Do any variation you can think of like that
Its helped a lot with my left foot control since i tend to alternate all the time unlike more drummers who will always lead with right foot on triplets or quintuplets
It also inadvertently helped with my speed too
Excellent suggestion. Totally agree 💯 the weak foot needs 3x the amount of work to catch up and that's usually where people are capped when it comes to progress.
Thank you, well done. I'm sweating now and my heart rates up! Will use this to start my practice.
Hope it helps you in the year ahead! Thank you for appreciating
Just picked up a double kick pedal after playing only a single pedal for 35 years. Your video has been very helpful. And thank you for talking about breathing and stretching!

Thank you so much for this informative video, still learning double bass and will definitely try this!!
Try my 2.0 routine, I made some changes to make it even more effective, although both will serve you well and if you feel bored of one or the other you can switch between them too. Here's 2.0 ruclips.net/video/SM-Wc6AOki0/видео.html
I finally reached 190 bpm consistant. Thanks a lot 🤘🤘🤘🙌🙌🙌
YES!!!! You put in some fantastic work 🔥💯
Thank you so much dude, i couldn't keep a steady tempo with double pedals to save my life. A couple of days of practice and now i have noticed the difference. Im already so much better
That's awesome. You owe it to yourself for doing this routine consistently the past few days :)
I've got a 2nd double bass routine you can also try ruclips.net/video/SM-Wc6AOki0/видео.htmlsi=jHx0ab13PUezKsLs although you can just stick to this for the next month. Or alternate between them when you get bored of the other one. Changing up the routine now and then helps re-stimulate the muscles. Also routine 2.0 is more focused on muscle development which is very essential for the higher speeds.
@ArtOfDrummingHQ Thanks! Also I've been wanting to ask a question. If I train legs (weight lifting) should I make my routine less intense?
The more you train, the more workload your muscles can take. So if you've been doing that for awhile, you actually can keep up the intensity of having both and they're going to help each other. You'd know if after weeks of your current intensity your legs recover to go again and again and there is no pain or injury. I realize I'm able to do more legwork too nowadays on top of teaching 8 hours a day. But 5 years back I couldn't. My legs would totally burn out and I'd experience pain in my ankle joint.
This guy is a wise sage of drumming
bro you're awesome. I'm so human. hahaha
Exactly what i was looking for, THANK YOU!
Glad I could help, thank you too!
Thanks!
THANK YOU :) 👍
Thank you so much!

Absolutely well rounded routine-video. Congrats and ThankU
Thank you :) hope it helps!
i just got my first double pedal a few days ago, i have been playing on a single pedal for 7 years now. this video is literally making my shins and calves die yet say thank you.
Congrats on the new double pedal!! What kind did you get?
Thanks so much, from Argentina ❤!
Great comprehensive routine. Thank you for sharing. I will be giving it a go for a while and see what happens.
Read the pinned comment for how I used this routine for a year. All the best!
Thank you! i will for shure be trying this out. getting better at double kick is a goal i've yet to achieve
All the best!
This is a wonderful tutorial! Thank you for sharing!
You are so welcome and thank you :D
Excellent work, thank you for sharing! Appreciate your dedication and discipline 👍🏼
My pleasure! Thanks so much too!
Thanks!
Thank you kind sir!!!!!!
🔥🤘🏻😎🤘🏻🔥Great video, will start to do stretching more often.
😁🙌 Hope it helps!
Thank you! This is the kind of routine I need.
Hope it helps!!
@@ArtOfDrummingHQ I already know you're on top of it. You are a motivation of mine. Thanks much again mate.
I have been practicing with this video on all my techniques and I think it is helping me gradually still have a long way to go. I had to start out with it slower then increase gradually wish me luck.
Wonderful get consistent with this for 3 months and let me know how it goes
@@ArtOfDrummingHQ I will definitely do that I had a really good band practice tonight especially with my drumming and my double base so I think it is helping but I will definitely do that.

Hope it's healing well, take it easy and progressively crank it up. Thank you anyway!

Thank you very much for the tip!!!
XD
Thanks a lot❤i never practiced anything like this. Helped me a lot to be motivated. 🙏👍🖐️
Cool hope you had fun! Thanks for showing your appreciation
Good stuff man, these definitely help tighten up control a lot 👍 I also did these during my years of practice
Good stuff man ,
Thank you.
👍
My pleasure, hope it helps!
hell fucking yes dude. I finally started to take ankle technique seriously and i can now say im starting to get the motion down! Its no longer coming from my shins! Still lots of work to do but you are such a godsend! Thank you!!!😊
Thank you and that's great to hear! Don't care where it's coming from as long as you've found your most efficient setup and can grow it!!!

The stretches felt good too.
I’ll be back in 6 months! Thank you for this. 😊

You say you want to play like Matt Garstka, but your name is Matt as well. That's interesting to say the least
Seems great, thanks!
@@ArtOfDrummingHQthank you very much man. Appreciate you taking the time to respond. 😃
My pleasure really. Let's do this!
I love your work thank you so much
Thank you for showing your appreciation :D

Hi! I’m trying to get my double pedal drumming faster and more precise. What tips can you provide? Great exercises by the way..

Great video! Thanks!!
Hope it helps!
I use “stick control”
But apply it to feet. Also, has anyone ever thought of some kind of lock to slide your foot into like bicycles have on their pedals … does that sound like something that would work?
The lock might be interesting but guess would be tricky to pull off the double stroke slide technique in those locks
Awesome, man🤘🏻
Swag! I Love how this quickly gets someone playing 16th notes at 170 mhmmmmm 👏🏻🐺💯⚡️⬆️
Thank you for sharing!
Hopefully it helps!
Hi! thank you for the video, I've been practicing this method for 2 weeks now.
It's just harder of course, but it does make your left leg work harder (which could make the difference)
Thank you for your well wishes :D It's been 10 1/2 years of this channel, so 50k didn't come easy at all haha.
Do you think the Trick drive shaft makes the left pedal feel better/easier?
For sure it does. The stock shaft is quite stiff and if you wanna compensate with spring tension then the response between right and left becomes even greater.
I don’t use a double bass but I really need to improve my kick drum speed. What should I do?
Check out my single pedal technique here ruclips.net/user/shortsBI3NTywGQCM?si=11cFCOMGZXl3_yGc and you gotta practice mastering that, and also improve the speed and strength of your muscles with this 2nd video here(applied to your right leg)ruclips.net/user/shortsH-Iu3bImsJE?si=txZfDAlaluJcBV5u.
Also got more videos coming up in the near future about this topic so stay tuned to the channel
Im drumming for 25yrs and still struggeling :(
- i crash at the faster tempo’s unable to control, even practising this for years.
- thinking it might be the pedal settings? Are your beater touching the skin if you’re in resting position?
-what is your spring tention? :(
Any advice?
What is your transmission axis? I loved it
Thanks for this content, I started this routine 4 weeks ago after several years of not playing drums.
Thank you for your super kind words!
congrats on 50k!
Thank you!!
This is magic 😮😅
👍
