    Have you any vids with it on brick? We are contemplating limewashing our dark brick house and would love to go with a lighter pigment.

    • @erinallan6371
      @erinallan6371 2 года назад

      Our pigments can be used at a much lighter ratio to create off whites. If you use the primer of 1 part lime to 20 parts water, then do at least 2 to 3 more coats you should be able to successfully cover the brick underneath. If wanting a distressed look, it is still recommended to do the same amount of coats, but distress it with wet rags or brushes, etc while applying.

    • @philindeblanc
      @philindeblanc Год назад

      Adding acrylic to limewash makes it pretty much ZERO point in using a lime wash. First you just killed the lime's ability to breathe, and you took away the antimicrobial properties, and you now have a barrier that moisture can get trapped under. This video makes zero sense.

      Lime wash cannot be applied over previous paint. An alternative to get the look of a lime wash would be to use a professional milk paint like the product from The Old Fashioned Milk Paint Company. Our pigments can even be used in the untinted base of their product.

    Hi,
    How Long in years does this Pigmented Lime paint coating lasts for?

    • @EarthPigmentsCompany
      @EarthPigmentsCompany  8 лет назад +1

      For exterior coats, lime wash can last up to ten years depending upon how much rain it is subjected to. The more rain, the more layers one should apply for the strongest coating. 3 to 5 coats is recommended for exterior. Some people will apply 2 or 3 coats the first year then return the following year to apply more. In this way the wash builds up and over time will become harder. Lime wash is often used as a decorative coating now. It's original function was as a sacrificial coating, applied to protect the wall underneath. It would be reapplied as it wore away. In use as a decorative coating, it is best to use additional binders to enhance the longevity.

    • @erinallan6371

      Iron Oxide pigments are great for lime wash! Per kilo of lime, do not exceed 500g. Refer to our Lime Wash page on our website for more information including water ratios. Cosmetic grade Oxides might produce a different color result depending upon their particle size.

  • @dishantmanik439
    @dishantmanik439 4 года назад

    Hi, what is the ratio of lime to water for the coloured lime wash? How much time do you leave the primer for drying and start applying coloured lime wash? What if we do not use the additives for the coloured lime wash?

    • @EarthPigmentsCompany
      @EarthPigmentsCompany  4 года назад +1

      Our Wash recipe uses 1 kilogram of lime (about 1 1/2 qt by volume) to 6 quarts of water. You can apply the next coat as soon as the one below is dry. It should absorb the solution, not be damp so that it just sits on top. Additives are additional insurance for success, especially if adding a non binding load like pigment. However the wash can be applied without them. Just remember that once an additive is used, all subsequent coats should contain the same additive.

    what binder was used?

    • @Inaneassylum
      @Inaneassylum 6 лет назад +1

      The binder used is an Acrylic Binder used in paint formulations. You will find it here on our website: www.earthpigments.com/acrylic-binder/
      Do not use the acrylic admixtures found in box stores for use in cement as this will not work. Follow our recipe for guidance on ratios in your lime wash.

  •  4 года назад

    Some formulae include salt (to assist mixing?) and white cement (to create a surface bond, rather than a dusty surface?). Do you know anything about these mixes? I want to cover a large shed concrete floor but am worried about the effects of salt once dried. My guess would be a primer with no salt and no cement. Adding them to the second layer. I'll just pour it on with a watering can and household floor brush if it ponds in depressions or gets too thick. Any help would be greatly appreciated. A neighbour has expensively ruined his bigger shed trialing epoxy.

    • @Inaneassylum
      @Inaneassylum 4 года назад

      Some recipes will use Alum---much better than salt. This would act as a water conditioner to facilitate mixing and would be more important with a colored lime wash. A shovel of white cement can be great as an additive with lime plasters to add a hydraulic element, but in the thin layer of lime wash it does not do much to strengthen it. Having said all of this, I would still not recommend lime wash for a floor. Lime is soft and will quickly wear down and dust off in the areas of high traffic.

      +Louise L
      Dear Louise,
      If done correctly and all the necessary conditions for application are met,, the lime wash should not rub off when touched. In the first few days after application it might, so you have to wait awhile to be sure it is set.

    How sure are you that the reaains will not remove that paint

    • @Inaneassylum
      @Inaneassylum 3 года назад

      Lime Wash in its original purpose was considered a "sacrificial coating". For example, a cob building would eventually erode in the rain. By coating it with lime wash on a regular basis, the lime wash would erode instead of the cob material. Lime wash is now used as a decorative coating as well. Yes, it will wear away in the rain eventually, but it will wear in a more gradual and attractive way than a latex paint would. Adding additional binders can increase the lifepsan, as can recoating in subsequent years.

    Can I use Linseed oil for binder?
    How many should I put if yes

    • @erinallan6371
      @erinallan6371 2 года назад +2

      You can certainly add linseed oil to lime wash as an additional binder. We prefer boiled linseed oil as it dries faster. In our recipe using a kilo of lime and six quarts of water, you could use about 1 cup. Do not put it into the primer of 1 part lime to 20 parts water as this is not necessary.

    • @abigailtayao1306

      @@erinallan6371 thank you very much for replying! Been searching and reviewing Limewash for days now. But, I still have few questions.
      - Should I put linseed oil with the oxide pigment to create paste then add to Limewash?
      - How long should I put the next layer on, I read somewhere that it's best to put next layer after 1-2 days, What will I do to my premixed Limewash then if I wait 1-2 days each layer.
      Thank you so much in advance for answering!

    • @erinallan6371
      @erinallan6371 2 года назад +1

      @@abigailtayao1306 You can certainly create the color paste using the linseed oil. That would be a good way to incorporate both. I agree that if adding the linseed oil, 1 to2 days between each layer would be a good idea as well. Lime wash is best made fresh, however if you allow the lime to settle down to the bottom beneath the water, it should be fine for a day or two. The lime and pigment will settle to the bottom and the oil will rise to the top. It will take some mixing to get it fully emulsified again.
