  • Lime coating on brick and plastered building surfaces is an old technique that provides the most diffusion-open coating and a unique surface look. Whitewashed walls can breathe, and the technique ensures that moistened walls can dry. Limestone also has other qualities and strengths that make it a particularly suitable building material in our part of the world.
The chalk white colour is most commonly used for liming, but by adding different so-called earth colours or colour powder you can achieve many beautiful nuances. To create the best and most lasting result, craft techniques that have been developed over centuries, must be used. Once you've watched the movie, find links to more information (in Danish) on the topic in the column to the right.

Thank you for the helpful video!
In Mexico and I would guess in some other LA countries, the liming and whitewash are used as well but some slime juice from Cactus and salt are added and it is believed to give more strength to the mix.
The cactus pads (nopales) are cut and let it sit overnight in water, then the strained juice is incorporated to the mix.

Thank you so very much for this wonderful information: the presentation is clear, the instructions are very useful. Please tell me when one is instructed to remove all paint, does that mean to remove paint that is flaking?
Once again, I thank you for taking the time to share this translated information.

Excellent video! I live in central New York, USA, with lots of "sub-zero" ( -18 deg C) weather and am always amazed how much better plastered walls hold up in Germany and Denmark over the winter. I guess the old fashioned lime washes are the reason. BTW, What you are calling "Lime water" when spraying a wall which has been givine its final coat of lime-paint, is just a weak solution of slaked lime ( calcium hydroxide) in water??? 2g/liter?

Lime putty is stored under water. On standing, the putty settles to the bottom and a clear layer of water is left on top; that's the lime water. It is a saturated solution of calcium hydroxide.

This is great video. I was wondering if you can provide us formula to make Liming or Whitewash mix. Specially what to include which will help to stick on wall ?. I was told white wash goes away with heavy rain. Not sure how true.

@ 1:17 it is said the mixture ratio is 1:4 (one part lime and 4 parts water). When applied it will harden like concrete.

Don't make the mistake of purchasing lime POWDER from the garden center. That is just rock powder.... and what you really want is HYDRATED lime from the hardware store usually located near the concrete and mortar mix bags. Also, wear a breathing filter mask so you don't get the powder in your eyes, skin, or lungs while mixing with water.

For barns and chicken coops USE the Garden type, its not as irritating. But it needs redoing every year.
