The dress that Dovima dons in Avedon’s iconic image is itself reflective of a seismic moment in fashion history. Though labeled as a piece by Dior, the dress was the very first design made for the fashion house by another now-famous designer by the name of Yves Saint Laurent. The then-19-year-old designer had for the previous year been working with Christian Dior, but due to his lack of professional experience had been relegated to smaller design projects. The dress was among the initial sketches he was permitted to submit for the House of Dior’s couture collection, which ultimately led to more designs with each subsequent season. Laurent and Dior’s artistic sensibilities were remarkably similar, and at the age of 21-following Dior’s untimely death-Laurent found himself as head designer. Later, in 1961, he founded his own eponymous fashion house, however, his early designs for Dior remain an integral part of the brand’s heritage and DNA.❤
Lovely woman, sad story. The word iconic is overused but it certainly applies to her. Really appreciate the captions showing designer, photographer, publication and date. Real Fashion History!
Excellent, professional presentation, photos and narration. I’m glad that women are not cast out for age quite as trivially as they used to be. It’s a terrible reality and double standard, but the solution is to save like a maniac while making the money. Thank you for a superior presentation.
I appreciate the time, research, and editing that you put into creating these videos. They highlight the beauties and fashions of yesteryear, that many people today are not even aware of. It should however be remembered (Dovima herself said it), that a modeling career only last as long as the model can portray the image the industry seeks. Great insights into Dovima and fashion. Thanks.
Great archival photos. Just a gentle correction regarding the pronunciation of her name-it's pronounced Do-vee-ma. I'm not sure if the narration is done by AI or by you, but that's how Dovima pronounced her name.
What a great retrospect of Dovima, whether known or not she was a true revolutionist in the modeling world. Due to the Barneys ad campaigns, I always think of Linda as being her successor.
What is so interesting is I didn't know her name. I just remember how amazing her character was in Funny Face. It may not be seen in a positive light because, Marion, wasn't considered very intellectual. It was an extremely funny do to the fact that her voice didn't match her extremely sophisticated image.
I believe the voice she used (Marion, what are you reading? "Minute Men from Mars") was acting; her two scenes in Funny Face show her more than capable. Although the fact she was a real New Yorker may prove me otherwise…
The instant I saw Violet on her original season, I went looking for her name involved with Dovima and there was ONE local interview she did in Atlanta where she mentioned her.
I never heard of her before but wow! What a portfolio. Too bad she like many others were screwed over by their “manager/husbands.” Should have retired a wealthy woman as she was exquisite looking and made fashion look amazing. I’m so surprised I’ve never heard of her. Thank you for the story
The greatest photographic model ever, those models that went to the same agency later were/are nothing compared to her. Today style and elegance are not wanted, it seems to be all about ugliness - clothes are just rags, designers today do not want their clothes to be modelled with the elegance.
Yes!Though the model used for the photograph, Dovima, is labeled a “supermodel” today, she was working several decades before the term was coined and popularized…
@@FashionQuestion The term super model is a title given with very little thought as to the meaning of the word, you look on google images for Christine Tidmarch - she flew all over the world to be the star of fashion shows, in old age a room full of people would part as she made her entrance. She was a super model.
Beauty comes also with Tears sadly The Elephant s were tied up in Chains they suffered dearly Big price for fame! Now that too are Icons . Another trophy.
To add to the Dior/Saint-Laurent story, I know first-hand that Pierre Bergé, Yves Saint-Laurent's partner in business and in life, claimed until the day he died that without Saint-Laurent, the house of Dior would never have survived, and that Yves never fully received the credit he deserved for this. I never understood why this remained such an issue for Bergé, as Saint-Laurent became an even more important fashion icon than Dior.
Thanks for your opinion! Christian Dior is often credited with changing the course of post-war fashion and creating a new standard for luxury and femininity. Yves Saint Laurentis celebrated for his innovative spirit, ability to blend high fashion with everyday wear, and for paving the way for modern fashion's inclusivity and diversity. Ultimately, both designers were critical in their respective eras. Dior laid the groundwork for the rebirth of haute couture, while Saint Laurent modernized and expanded the scope of fashion, making it more accessible and diverse. Their importance depends on the specific aspects of fashion history one values most….To be honest,my heart with Dior❤️
I really appreciate a naturally beautiful woman. But esp back then because everything you saw was god given. No botox. No fillers. No crazy treatments. No implants. No eye pullers. Susie Parker was another beauty. But Dovima was always my favorite. Along with the fantastic Carmen.
There was plastic surgery and cosmetic enhancements back then, as well. Also extreme dieting practices that were very unhealthy, that Physians often prescribed. Such as, Doctors advising patients to smoke cigarettes to loose weight/ maintain their weight. Don’t crap on modern women.
@coricori7661 There was plastic surgery, but it was minimal. Your basic face lift, which young women didn't bother with and nose jobs, and rib removal for a smaller waistline. Enhancements were also minimal and were not medical. Actresses removed back teeth for a deeper cheekbone. It was called the "buckle." They were encouraged to smoke and take pills to lose weight. They plucked their hairlines and a number of other home beauty remedies. And I'm not "crapping" on modern women. It's just gotten out of control, and I'm sure you would agree.
Only two contemporary models could (timidly) stand by her side: Christy Turlington and Mariacarla Boscono. Even Gisele is to much comparing to her instinctive movements. Maybe Raquel Zimmerman, but she's a blond, so she belongs to other categories of modeling. At least that's how I react to your Tyra quote...
Steven Meisel, the renowned photographer, collaborated with Linda Evangelista in the late '80s to early '90s and paid tribute to the iconic work that Dovima did with Richard Avedon in the late '40s and '50s.
Those pictures took you into the pictures and the wearer , they created a world all f it’s own and it took you there . They can’t do it these days would know how ,❤️
I didn't know about the bikini pic at 16:15: it is fabulously sexy, and it becomes my fav of her, above the abstract, stunning back at around 06:00! Of course the Cirque d'Hiver are masterpieces that transcends her persona, and belong to the best photos of all times, all categories, all subjects. She was quite a woman, wasn't she?
A true classic beauty and the epitome of modeling. Her posing was truly unique. She designed her own hair and makeup. She always knew what Avedon wanted I question why after being so huge in modeling she didn’t go to Vogue or Harper’s to work as an editor, model coordinator or even photographer?? Or as a muse to designers?? To just leave with her parents to Florida?? I don’t get it. Fashion started her she should have stayed with it. But you can change a lot of things in life, but not your destiny
Dovima’s modeling career came to an end due to the rapid shift in fashion industry standards in the late 1950s. She was one of the most iconic models of her time, embodying refined elegance and glamour. However, her style began to be seen as outdated with the arrival of new models like Twiggy, who represented youth culture and a more natural look. After retiring in the 1960s, she decided to leave the industry and move to Florida, where she lived with her parents. Her departure from fashion was also influenced by personal reasons, including a desire for stability in her life. Later, she worked in sales and the restaurant business, though her financial situation remained challenging. This chapter of her life highlights the contrast between the glamour of her career and the difficulties she faced adapting to life outside the fashion world….
